Isabelle and David continue to talk with David's brother's friend, Aaron, and contemplate why folks with ADHD can be so enthusiastic and excited about interests, people, etc. Is it because we are like puppies who are starved for reinforcement (dopamine)? Or does it come from living a life on the outside and the joy of connection when it has been missed for so long. With callbacks to Greatest American Hero (See Ep095) as well as the real story behind the theme song to St. Elmo's Fire.—-David describes how borrowing from LeDerick Horne and his brilliant theory around leadership, that folks in leadership can have a number of qualities, including being promoters. Folks with ADHD can be natural promoters, and being a promoter is actually a form of leading others. With the caveat that we must be into what we promote. And how excited we are about people and how we talk people up. David names that perhaps this has something to do with how we are starving (for dopamine) and intimacy and connection and relatedness can help us fill that void, we reach for the connection and get excited. Isabelle wonders if this relates to an autism(ASD)-style special interest, how she perpetually is excited and has a working principle that everyone could find common ground if we just found a shared hobby or special interest. David likes to tell people on airplanes that he's a car salesman so he can talk and listen to his heart's content but he doesn't have to focus on what he does. Isabelle names that even though David is not very savvy about cars, he could sell a car because he's such a natural salesperson. Isabelle names that anxiety around overselling things, she might encourage people to try new things, take new risks, explore and play—but her working memory is so poor that she doesn't know if she oversold, she has to refer to notes or something as reference. David loved serving as fun because there was a high degree of risk and failing so it helped me remember things. David names that we are not starving puppies with watery eyes, but we are highly susceptible to be reinforced, so when we see someone else's tail wagging, it shoots up our levels of dopamine, we are highly reinforced. The establishing operation—social connection and social mastery is water for us, like the water-deprived rats being reinforced in Skinner boxes. The environment makes Isabelle's puppy quality feel safe or good or not; and can lead to her feeling starved of that connection and reinforcement. The feeling when you have no one wagging their tail back at you—how many mistakes we do make, how many social gaffs and miscues, and big ones. It's almost like we find ourselves so marginalized, its like finding a prison gang when we find people who get us. What does it do to your sense of self when you can't do what you want with your morning—how that deflates your sense of self. Isabelle feels like she shares a bond with the other parents and caregivers that are always running late—it flares up imposter syndrome and “if you only saw me five minutes ago." David reframes this as "if only you saw what it took me to get here and I made it!" Aaron is a master of social engineering, even though he's almost always good at it and social interaction, he remains scared the whole time. The anxiety hits because if it doesn't work out, he takes the hits hard: he can take a lot of them, but they hit hard. David shares one of his hits—he was spending a lot of money for grad school, wanting to read all the books for all his classes, he was going to learn it all...but he didn't do any of the readings for one of his classes. The class was talking about this person out loud, “Ed Nafoah” — he was like "what is this Nafoah guy talking about ?” and everyone in class is like “Edna? Her name is Edna Foa.” It took five to ten minutes for David to feel the cabin pressure returning and the lights to come up and to return to his body. Aaron points out that his impulsivity could carry him through it—David had a ballast and in grad school and they were talking about different psychosocial backgrounds, step or two based on privilege. The professor holds up a dollar and says "the first person to…can have this dollar?” He's never seen someone authorized like that. Aaron sings the theme song from “The Greatest American Hero” which we all know, and the superhero suit is David's impulsivity. Who is Edna Foa?Greatest American Hero trailer (he is LITERALLY "walking on air")Story behind St. Elmo's Fire theme song, "Man in Motion" here's the music video and the song A quick synopsis of the backstory behind the song (Source: Wikipedia)And an interview with the songwriter/singer, John Parr, discussing how he came up with the idea and how he snuck it in to be the theme song for this 1980's Brat Pack Extravaganza. In this edition of the GVN Interview, we sit down with the multi-talented performer, musician, and voice actor William Katt!
Isabelle and David welcome David's brother's friend, Aaron, who, as a recently diagnosed ADHDer, brings up the idea of if ADHD is a superpower, it's like the super suit in “Greatest American Hero:” a suit given with a manual that got lost on the first day of use. What happens when you find your ‘ingredient' for doing the things you previously struggled with and now can do? How does your self esteem and sense of self efficacy impact how you handle days when that ingredient is missing? This plus being puppy dogs together, tackling Mt. Laundry, and why intimacy beats contempt.----David and Isabelle welcome Aaron, a longtime friend of David's brother, who was recently diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. In thinking about ADHD, he thinks about this show from the 1970's, “Greatest American Hero,” where this teacher is given a superpower suit by some aliens, who also give him a manual for the suit, and he loses it on the first day, so he goes around saving people but also is seeking this manual and he always gives it up to save someone. He resonated with this character so much, and for Aaron, medication made a huge difference—he is able to wake up and do the thing and then he is able to do. He's been medicated for anxiety and depression his whole life and taking medication for ADHD doesn't make those go away, but it helps him be the person he always wanted to be. Isabelle so resonates with the suit metaphor and how she and Bobby attempted to make their home more ADHD friendly (see “Keeping House While Drowning” and all the ADHD friendly home tips below!) And she forgot her medication and instead of spiraling into anxiety, when she realized why she stalled out all day, she was able to recognize it was “oh, I was missing my ingredient.” David points out that it's not just medication, because medication is not for everyone, it can be so many things, once we find out what the ingredient is—working out in the morning, the coffee routine, whatever it might be--when you all of a sudden miss it, you can pinpoint it and recover. Even more so, Aaron describes how it is a conscious habit, as a child of the 80's, he is not about the idea of 'working on his self-esteem,' but realizes through therapy and his conversations with David that it keeps coming up for a reason, there are wounds there that do shift when you are able to do some of the things you previously struggled with. David can recognize those nasty voices in our heads, the angry voice as a teenager to get himself to do things. Based on his arbitrary math, while it takes 6 weeks to build a neurological bridge, it takes 6 years to build a habit. He chose to make excitement that it will be over the habit over the anger over having to do it. Whether it's medication or nervousness or anxiety, David recognizes that something has to stimulate him so he has to choose his path and practice it. Aaron remembers his psychologist friend Dave 20 years ago sharing the 3 paths to happiness (he was studying at the time)—the first is excitement, the second is contempt (at least temporarily), and the third is intimacy. Aaron is excitable and comes from a contemptuous family and wants to focus on intimacy. This makes Isabelle make awkward spiders with her hands, the idea of gossiping and spreading shame makes you feel reassured and safe but also brings with it a threat and temporary condition; for Isabelle, intimacy means playfulness, curiosity, a willingness to see what happens next, and as David defines it: a shared vulnerability. Aaron ordered up BRAIN STUFF, and sadly David has no links, so Isabelle tries to fill it by talking about studies that connect to how we associate the negative talk about someone with the gossiper, not the subject of the gossip. David names that he does think ADHD is a superpower with a missing manual, and the tricky part is let's say we're talking unbridled enthusiasm: it's a superpower and contagious and also has an effect on the recipient. David names being okay with someone not wanting to be the recipient at this current moment. My crush on William Katt began decades ago with the tumbling blonde spirals of Tommy Ross in Carrie, the close-cropped Sundance, to the shorter golden curls of Pippin… it wasn't just the hair, of course… that face, the smile, his voice… the whole damn package. Like millions of other baby boomers, he had us swooning for years. How lovely to sit down with Bill, these almost 50 years later, to discover he's still got that boyhood charm, mischievous sense of fun, with just a teeny touch of bad boy (note him playfully admonishing his wife when she sneaks into the “set.” And, the au courant platinum do, and facial hair he's currently sporting still make him a handsome standout. That's the trivial superficialities - but, what do you expect when you're talking about a movie star heartthrob? Well, there is the laid-back, easy-going, real as-beans, straight-shooter, who was crazy fun to chat with and get his inside perspective on his parents, actors, Bill Williams (Kit Carson) and Barbara Hale - loved to learn that she was also funny- Betty White funny, and inspired at least one woman to great professional heights, on Angie Dickenson, his first TV co-star, his passion for theatre, always, working with Bob Fosse, and Ben Vereen, Auditioning for George Lucas, to play Luke Skywalker with Kurt Russell as Hans Solo - doing a great job, instead being cast by Brian DePalma in his seminal work, Carrie, alongside his friend, and perhaps for a brief moment something more, Amy Irving, visited on the set by Steven Spielberg, perhaps where that all began, alongside beloved Nancy Allen (who is responsible for connecting me with Bill, making this conversation possible), John Travolta, Betty Buckley, Piper Laurie, Cissy Spacek-some great stories there, we talked about The Greatest American Hero, and the risk back then of going from film to TV, working with Robert Culp, and Connie Selleca, House, and George Wendt, great Sci-Fi with The Man From Earth, why he no longer does theatre, does only good films for friends, like last years' Pursuit with John Cusack and an upcoming film with Alfred Molina. We talked about music throughout his life, bands in high school, playing clubs later on, a pop hit, lots of musical theatre culminating with Pippin and Fosse, and a musical about and working with, Randy Newman, which his love for came out his pores when describing, to his current passion Jazz project. William Katt is a Renaissance man. We already know he looks great in tights. What FUN!!!! Riding Shotgun With Charlie #205 Rabbi Andy Mars I was asked to emcee an event in New Jersey for the Coalition of New Jersey Firearm Owners and Women for Gun Rights. The lineup of speakers was great! Gabby Franco (RSWC #117), Lucretia Hughes & Dick Heller (episodes coming soon), and Rabbi Andy Mars. He's a great speaker with lots of thought provoking ideas. We met in the hotel lobby the morning after the event while everyone was having breakfast. The Rabbi is a straight shooter. We start right off talking about how it says in the Torah that if someone tries to kill you, you should kill him first. We have the right and the responsibility to protect ourselves. Going back to the Old Testament days, he points out that if God banned rocks because Cain killed Abel then David wouldn't have been able to use one against Goliath. He brings up how Dr. Ben Carson talked often about how if we didn't let the German authorities take away the guns of the Jewish people, then World War II would have been a lot different. The Rabbi lived in Los Angeles for 30 years. He was introduced to shooting then and often went to the LAPD shooting range with officers he's worked with. He spent years working with the police on how to deal with kids in crisis. He's also gone shooting in New Jersey, also a wildly anti-gun state. One of the talking points from his speech the night before he brings up again. It's that killing and murdering are not the same thing. Killing doesn't have a criminal intent or act with it, while murdering does have criminal intent and is unlawful. This is something that gun owners need to be clear on and make sure you know the distinction between them. He points out that we shouldn't murder someone, but we do have the right to kill someone in self defense. One thing the Germans did back in 1938 is register firearms. I'm a firm believer in what Evan Nappen (RSWC #148) says which is, legislation leads to registration, registration leads to confiscation, and confiscation leads to extermination. Since all firearms were registered, they knew who's doors to knock on and what they had for firearms. The Rabbi has been working with children and has a non-profit organization called Kids Make a Difference Foundation. Its mission statement is “Helping make a difference in the life of kids, helping kids make a difference in life.” Of course, to work with children, he's CPR certified. But very similar to firearms, he has to know how to administer first aid in case it's needed. That takes training and preparedness on his part to be able to do that. Hopefully, he'll never need to use it, but if he does he's prepared. He also talks about the fact that everyone is worried about the liability of trying to save or defend someone else. I've heard of people who have some medical/first aid training because they carry and use firearms and know that something can happen. But they also have medical training and carry a first aid kit on their ankle and keep one in the car. And they've used them more for injuries in a car accident than ever needed one after a gunfight. Living in California, the Rabbi also had an earthquake bag that had necessary supplies in it should there be a quake and they need to leave quickly. We talk about where he learned about these topics and he says it's from The Torah, which he calls the Guide Book of Life. It's like an instruction manual. Bringing up an old TV show, The Greatest American Hero, he points out that the main character finds a superhero outfit, but he doesn't know what his superhero skills and abilities are. The series is him trying to figure out what he is supposed to be doing with these skills. It is really great to talk with someone that has different religious beliefs, but still has the same values. We don't all have to be the same people, which is true diversity. We can have differences and still get along because we have the same values. It shows us that gun people are the best people. Favorite quotes: “Every Rabbi should be a pro-gun Rabbi.” “Had God banned rocks at that time, what would David had against Goliath?” “If someone comes to kill you, kill them first. It's clear.” “Respectable, respectful people should be able to respectably, respectfully disagree.” Bnai Tov bnaitov.org Bnai Tov Facebook https://facebook.com/BnaiTov/ Bnai Tov YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@BnaiTov/videos Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Silicon Valley still sucks, wrapping up advertising, nursing is exhausting, going to Skywalker Ranch, meeting Mark Hamill, reading comics in a park, the stupidity of post-credit scenes and encores, the awesome Sam Raimi, the genius that is Logan, trying to pronounce Boyd Holbrook, a forgotten John Ritter movie, and a quote and a joke. Stuff mentioned: Blur "Tracy Jacks" (1994), Taco Bell Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQkNOXzapyk), Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Dirty Dancing (1987), Obsession (1976), Vertigo (1958), Marvel Comics Power Man and Iron Fist (1972-1986), Frog and Toad Are Friends (1970), The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), Army of Darkness (1992), Drag Me to Hell (2009), Darkman (1990), Howard the Duck (1986), Back to the Future (1985), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Logan (2017), Shane (1953), In the Shadow of the Moon (2019), Cold in July (2014), The Terminator (1984), The Greatest American Hero (1981-1983), Joey Scarbury "Believe It or Not"/Theme from The Greatest American Hero (1981), Hero at Large (1980), Spider-Man (2002), The Amazing Spider-Man (1977-1979), and Batman (1989).

Paré's first starring role was as high school student Tony Villcana on the television series The Greatest American Hero (1981). His well-known film roles were as 1960s rock icon Eddie Wilson in Eddie and the Cruisers (1983) and its sequel Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Television was huge in the 1980s. With the development of cable being accessible almost everywhere, people were watching more TV than ever before. One of the best things about TV shows in the 1980s were the theme songs, which often became as big a part of pop culture as the show itself. On this episode, Rob and Dave are going to do something they've never done before, which is work together to develop a list of the best TV show theme songs from the 1980s. As usual, they'll still have some spirited debate on each other's opinions, but for once they'll work as a team to provide the best 80s TV show playlist you could imagine. So think back to your favorite theme songs and listen along to see if we identify them all and add them to the playlist. Roger Cobb (William Katt) is the Greatest American Hero and an okay writer – maybe. He's got a lot going on. He's going through a divorce with Sandy (Kay Lenz), their child has been missing for a questionable amount of time, he's writing a terrible book and there are weird demons (including Richard Moll) haunting his newly inherited house. Side note: Aunt Elizabeth (Susan French) might be the real villain here. Luckily, Harold (George Wendt) is always nearby with some beers and Chinese takeout. Tanya (Mary Stavin) will be wearing little and swimming outside or dropping off her kid for impromptu babysitting. Jeremy, La-Mar and Collin take on this evil and endure Cobb's endless drone writing about walking around. Why did this house want to haunt anyone? Who knows! RTS want to give you answers, but only a bathroom mirror portal can help you now.
Hop in suckers, we're going back to the 80s – 1987 to be more specific so we can attempt to stop the sweet sixteen killer from totally murdering some innocent people. I was influenced by Eddie Murphy. Best Defense turned out to be the worst movie ever done in the history of anything. We give Don Drysdale respect. Drysdale on "The Brady Bunch" and "Greatest American Hero." The connection between "Greatest American Hero" and the presidential assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Last, the connection between something touching found among Don Drysdale's personal belongings after he died in a Montreal Hotel Room and the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy. All this and an Alabama Slammer on the latest episode. Make mine a double.

Holy cow we need to do this more often. In fact we will. In what will soon be an annual tradition, the main heavies of All Time Top Ten history are in one place at the same time. We're feeling proud to have made such a fun-to-make and long-running podcast, and we want to pay tribute to the show itself by doing a topic suggested by one of our old Patreon Pals, a guy named Ari. This is Top Ten Songs That Could Be The All Time Top Ten Theme Song, a perfect topic for getting the gang together for some heightened ridiculousness. Gabe Scalone, David Daskal, The Old Boy Himself Ryan Blake, Joe Lavelle, Matt Dinan, Dustin Prince and the lovely and/or talented Shannon Hurley are all here. This motley-looking crew takes a stab at songs that embody the show, however you might interpret that. Since there's 8 of us, we had to expand things to 16 picks, with picks 16-9 featured in Part 1.Follow all of these good-hearted people on social media!Gabe - https://www.facebook.com/gabescaloneDavid - https://www.facebook.com/xyzyxRyan - https://www.instagram.com/soulsurfhb/Joe - https://twitter.com/JoeLavelleSongsMatt - https://www.instagram.com/frankensteinsjourney/Dustin - https://www.instagram.com/chrisdprince/Shannon - https://www.instagram.com/shannonsongs/
After last episode's patriotic diversion with Greatest American Hero, we're back with our Summer Knights series to begin our final battle against Garthe and Goliath. Somehow, Goliath has returned and so has Garthe, sporting a great big bushy beard. This episode has more excitement and energy than both of our previous Knight Rider episodes combined, and Hasselhoff seems to be giving it his all playing Garthe this time around. And there's a bizarre plot involving blood transfusions that also transfer memories (?) but really it's just an excuse to have another doppelganger. Since it's American Independence Day, we wanted to take a break from our Summer Knights series to honor a real American Hero, perhaps the GREATEST American Hero. That's right, we're talking all about The Greatest American Hero, a goofy show that's actually a lot better and more fun than we were expecting. In this episode, we kick things off with some ninjas attacking a Polish clown and only get wackier from there. Along the way, we wonder how old the high school kids are in Ralph's class, question whether Ralph really needs to constantly take his clothes off to use the suit's powers, and wonder if Bill is gonna have a heart attack from how worked up he always is. We even get a little political. It's a good one, folks! If you like the show, give us a rating on Apple Podcasts. And follow us on Twitter at @weirdcenter or Instagram at @weirdnesspodcast (where you can suggest TV shows we should cover on the podcast)!
It's 1982 (in our hearts, at least), so we're looking at the Mad magazines of 1982. (Historians agree that for a truly accurate account of the past, you should just read Mad. Plus you get to do the Fold-In.) That year Mad's TV and movie parodies included Raiders of the Lost Ark, Archie Bunker's Place, Family Feud, For Your Eyes Only, The Greatest American Hero, The Fall Guy, M*A*S*H, The Facts of Life, and Rocky III! (Want to see Alfred E. Neuman as Mr. T? Done!) Mad also covered video games (their Man of the Year may have been a Pac-Man) and did some silly stuff with lobsters too, just for Kornflake. And speaking of Kornflake, her pick for 1982 is a Corn Flakes commercial! Also: It's Freezepop Day. So listen to some synthpop and chomp on a weird frozen thing. Mickey Rooney loves Corn Flakes! It's 1990. An idea for something called "World Wide Web" or "the internet" is proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in Switzerland as a way to more rapidly distribute pornography. His wife on the other hand ... anyway ... the Berlin Wall is demolished, largely by people trying to escape David Hasselhoff singing nearby. The Simpsons airs on TV for the first time. Margaret Thatcher announces her resignation ... but most importantly, Michael Bolton releases a big sloppy hit that was written 8 years ago. We left it up to listeners to guide us to the most improved THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO episode ever, and what can I say? They rolled a natural 20 and crushed the skill check. The show writers had a lot of thoughts on Dungeons and Dragons, Satanic Panics, the Youth and Their Vidya Games. A lot of hilariously wrong thoughts, but in the best, most entertaining way possible. This is a two-part American science-fiction television miniseries, written and directed by Kenneth Johnson. When it was first aired on May 1-2,1983, it launched the science-fiction series about aliens simply known as the "Visitors" who try to take over Earth, and how the humans from all walks of life respond to their attempts. The cast includes Marc Singer, Faye Grant, Jane Badler, Richard Herd, Andrew Prine, Robert Englund, Richard Lawson, Jason Bernard, Michael Wright, Penelope Windust, Michael Durrell, Blair Tefkin, Peter Nelson, Viveka Davis, Leonardo Cimino, George Morfogen, Bonnie Bartlett, David Packer, Camila Ashland, Jenny Sullivan, Hansford Rowe, Diane Civita, Neva Patterson, Evan C. Kim, Rafael Campos, Jenny Neumann, and Robert Stack Pierce. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is a very special guest; the actress who portrayed resistance leader Juliet Parrish, FAYE GRANT! Jane Healey isn't just a successful author, she also has great taste in TV. During the course of this entertaining conversation, I uncorked her love for The Greatest American Hero, which took us on a fun tangent. Believe it or not, I was walking on air after that. Meet Jane Healey Jane is the author of The Secret Stealers and The Beantown Girls, a Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller. Our latest 80s action show selection was inspired by Jay's hazy hotel memories of once being entertained by this show. Jay regrets this pick almost immediately, but A.Ron has flashbacks to the bitter disappointment of a misspent youth where he allowed himself to get excited for a live action superhero show on network TV. Intergenerational bonding is what we're all about on this podcast, so we help each other through the deep hurting that is watching the adventures of Mr. Hinkley and his super powered special ed class. What is the one thing you remember about Greatest American Hero? Exactly, and we’re sorry that it is now stuck in your head. I can’t believe it myself. Anyway, normally on the End, we discuss the last episode of a show.. but this is a special case, you see, as the last episode of ‘Greatest’ was in 1983, but this is from 1986.. and yet, it still counts. How? Oh, there is only one way to find out, but the secret word of the day is: ‘dames’. It’s an End that isn’t an End, but is totally an End… Ok here we believe it or not, it’s just meeeee ♫ Full Episode

(Originally broadcast March 11th 2017) SHOW NOTES Episode #100: “What the HELL Was I Thinking?” This week Dave Bledsoe wakes up, stumbles past the empty whiskey bottles and takes a long look in the mirror and finally asks himself what the hell was he thinking? (Hint: I need to clean up all the empty bottles). On the show this week we look back at 100 Episode of a low rated podcast and what we've learned. (Hint: We need to get out of the house more.) Along the way, we learn about the history of podcasting from the early form of Dave getting drunk and recording himself with his friends to a more evolved form of Dave getting drunk and recording himself alone. (It's evolved because he learned it is cheaper to drink alone.) We also discover that the iPod was NOT the original name Steve Jobs preferred, we find that podcasts are where failed radio DJ's go to die, and just that Dennis Miller deserves an Executive Producer credit on this show. (Sane Dennis Miller, not current Dennis.) We also look forward to the inevitable death of podcasting with a quiet, desperate longing. Our show is sponsored this week by all of sponsors, without whom you would be listening to a much better show. We open with Howard Stern's wisdom on the podcast format and close with the Greatest American Hero. (Not Reagan, settle down!) We see Bill possibly die in a large explosion to start the episode. But, when Ralph starts seeing visions of Bill being abducted, it's up to him and Pam to find Bill. They end up on an island in Mexico where a scientist wants to build an army of supermen, by using Bill's DNA!
In 1981, a Los Angeles school teacher and a mid-level FBI agent encountered aliens in the desert and were given a super-powered suit. Together, they worked to use the suite to fight crime and corruption, but things could've gone smoother if only they hadn't lost the instruction manual. In this backtrack, we remember the adventures of Bill and Ralph as seen in the GenX television series, The Greatest American Hero!
