Send us a text We follow 19-year-old Private James Howard Smith from Liberty, Utah to the second wave landing on Utah Beach during the D-Day invasion. Born in Arkansas but settled in Utah by 1934, Smith registered for the draft the day after turning 18 and was in uniform just months later. His brief but valiant service with the 90th Infantry Division's 357th Regiment ended on June 19, 1944, amid the brutal hedgerow fighting that characterized the Normandy campaign. The regiment's own journal described it as "one of the worst baptisms of fire ever undergone by an American infantry unit." Smith's remains wouldn't return home until April 1949, nearly five years after his sacrifice, when he received final military honors at Ogden City Cemetery. His story represents thousands of similar narratives that would be lost without deliberate preservation.Discover these powerful stories yourself at webercountysgreatestgeneration.com where you'll find books, podcasts, and blog posts dedicated to ensuring Weber County's wartime contributions are never forgotten. Join us next week as we cross the globe to the Pacific Theater to honor Marine PFC Neil F. Dudman, who fell during the Battle of Saipan.

Ojai: Talk of the Town

We sit down with author Howard Smith to discuss his latest novel, "Viva Verdi & Violetta." This immersive historical tale dives deep into the life and struggles of Giuseppe Verdi, his muse Giuseppina Strepponi, and the revolutionary fervor of the Italian Risorgimento of the mid-19th century. Told through the watchful, and witty, mind of his close friend, a restaurateur and retired opera singer, the novel brings to life Verdi's rise as a composer, the artistic and political battles of 19th-century Italy, and the resistance against Austrian occupation. Smith takes us behind the curtain, revealing Verdi's encounters with freedom fighters like Garibaldi and the dramatic cultural shifts that shaped his operatic masterpieces. There's also a lot of about food and culture in this transformative time. Tune in for a captivating discussion on music, history, and the timeless power of storytelling!

The huge development has dramatically changed the hospitality face of Brisbane and Felons is central to the development.  I wanted to check in and find out how the hospitality heavy business was going, what they've learned about having a Craft Brewery that has to cater to the widest of tastes in a venue that sees 10,000 visitors per week. I also wanted to talk a little about the changing tastes in beer. A very relevant conversation as this weekend the venue is launching its Lagerpalooza Beer Festival, celebrating that once maligned section of the beer landscape, lagers. It's a fun but reflective chat with two terrific and very smart people and I hope you enjoyed it as much as you'll hear that we did. you paragraph Get the details on Lagerpalooza Get the details on Beer and Caviar This episode of Beer is a Conversation is presented by HPA. Pointers were considered an elite dog in Austen's time, so it makes sense that someone like Willoughby would own them (also, having cute dogs is possibly the only nice thing we can say about Willoughby). This episode we welcome back Dr. Stephanie Howard-Smith for more 18th-century dog talk. We cover everything from the care and feeding of pointers to trends in 18th-century game hunting. Sir John heartily approves. If you have ever been quite literally swept off your feet by a man with two pointers playing round him, this episode is for you. Join us in this episode as we delve into the critical issue of physician burnout and its correlation with the threat of lawsuits in the medical field. Our guest, Howard Smith, an obstetrics-gynecology physician, explores the notion that every doctor is at a 5 percent risk of being sued annually and how this inevitability affects their well-being. Howard will guide us through the four steps of risk management and explain how proactive measures can empower doctors in the face of complications. We'll also discuss the significance of the certified report, a sworn statement prepared by doctors, and its impact on insurance carriers and defense counsel. Discover how risk management offers a tangible solution for both those who believe litigation goes too far and those who feel it falls short. Join us for an eye-opening conversation on physician burnout and the transformative power of risk management in the medical profession. Howard Smith is an obstetrics-gynecology physician. He discusses his KevinMD article, "Proactive risk management: a game-changer in preventing physician burnout." The Podcast by KevinMD is brought to you by the Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience. Ambient intelligence augments human capabilities to make our lives easier. The applications are many, especially in health care. Ambient clinical intelligence is offsetting the most pressing challenges in health care today, such as burnout, physician shortages, physician and patient dissatisfaction, and underperforming financial outcomes, by applying the technology to clinical documentation.  The Nuance Dragon Ambient eXperience, or DAX for short, utilizes artificial intelligence and natural language processing to automatically document care. It securely listens to and captures the natural, clinician-patient encounter conversation unobtrusively, and turns that conversation into a clinical note for the clinician's review and signature directly in the electronic health record. You just talk naturally, and DAX does the rest.  DAX is being used by thousands of physicians across 30 different specialties nationwide. It has already won the Silver Stevie award in the health care technology category and was ranked #1 for improving clinician experience in KLAS's top 20 emerging solutions. I hope you’re enjoying listening to these on that great radio in the sky as much as I enjoy producing them. Now from the sublime to the ridiculous… We are back for another dive into Norm Nathan’s Vault of Silliness. This time it’s DBG from November 3rd, 1991 which, borrowing a phrase from the game, is titled: The Night of 200 Wolfies. We start with a lovely Show Open and some Lottery numbers. Break for some commercials (which I will list in a just a bit) and then the sweet sounds of the DBG Theme Players: Paul in Stoughton Jimmy from Winthrop Norma from the N. End Constance in Weymouth Jack from Laconia, NH I’m producing and in studio And Lou Ianazzo in traffic Bdays with all the sfx: Bob Feller Charles Bronson Michael Dukakis Ken Berry Lulu Roseanne Barr Arnold James Reston Adam Ant And one from November 5th… Roy Rogers We are giving thanks early for the cornucopia of commercial content: Florine Mark for Weight Watchers Call for Action and the Mass Bar Association Promo for ‘Ask the Lawyer’ Resolve Stop Smoking Kit with Steve Allen ‘Tom & Russ’ for J&C Adams doors, windows, and stuff voiced by Peter Meade Join WBZ and Jordan Marsh for an evening to benefit Children’s Hospital at the Enchanted Village at Downtown Crossing Carpet Giant Our good buddy, Patrick Palladino Jr of Winchester, MA for Gold Bond. And Keep It In Your Sneaker Other highlights: We lost Thanksgiving but it was recently found down in Cohasset? A Half-hearted Jack Benny makes an appearance. Norma does an excellent impression of a wind tunnel and later Norm adds his own sfx. Norm reveals he was filling out his letter of resignation during the game. Players wishing me a long and happy marriage. Norm adds if it’s an unhappy marriage it’ll seem a whole lot longer. Norm was prophetic about that. Norm makes a bold statement regarding this particular game. Norm gives some insider information on where and how Bob Raleigh stores and accesses his pens. I get to feel the power of ending a call. And we end the game with a cryptic message from Paul. Norm fills the time before news with the weather and tells us about a new program starting that very Sunday morning from 7-9am…Neil Chayet and Looking at the Law. It was replacing Dr. Howard Smith who had high-tailed it to the West Coast. Norm sends it to News after he teases us with a history question. The News Sounder segues nicely into the Traffic Sounder and a report from Lou Lou Lou Ianazzo. A very moving Accuwx forecast with Dave Bowers and Norm trying to sound like he’s on public radio. This all gives way to another Show Open and Norm gives the answer to the that pre-news question.
