A Trilha ficou por conta do Midnight Oil com Short Memory, Cassandra Wilson com Went Down to St. James Infirmary e Articolo 31 e Come Una Pietra Scalciata (Like A Rolling Stone).

Charlie Burnham Interview Charlie Burnham is an accomplished American violinist, singer, and composer celebrated for his imaginative and eclectic style. Burnham traverses multiple genres, including bluegrass, folk, free jazz, blues, classical, and chamber jazz. His innovative use of the wah-wah pedal on the violin adds a distinctive flair to his performances. Burnham first gained prominence through his contributions to James "Blood" Ulmer's Odyssey album, highlighting his versatility and skill. The ensemble from that project later formed Odyssey the Band. Throughout his career, Burnham has been a pivotal member of several notable groups and artists, like Living Colour, Cassandra Wilson,  String Trio of New York, 52nd Street Blues Project, Hidden City, We Free Strings, the Improvising Chamber Ensemble, and the Kropotkins. He has also recently recorded new music with Eureka Shoes, showcasing his continual evolution as a musician. Beginning as an informal gathering of friends and now blossoming into a fully-fledged collaborative band, Eureka Shoes' Beautalina (Adhyâropa ÂR00079) soars aloft on gorgeous 3-part harmonies, delicate acoustic textures, and world-class songcraft. Eureka Shoes features award-winning songwriter Jean Rohe, acoustic music stalwart Skye Soto Steele, and omni-genre multi-instrumentalist Charlie Burnham. How he first discovered his artistic talent… his educational journey, cultivating his artistic abilities and the mentors he's had along the way from William Pajaud, to Charles Dickson! His passion for and dedication to practicing and mastering Karate.. how he reconciled between his two passions and how the martial arts has shaped him as a visual artist by instilling the principles of discipline into his artistic practices. Finally, the first in my long-promised series on the contralto voice! The contralto is a rara avis in the today's opera and classical music scene, and yet back in the day, there seem to have been more of them before the public. And of course contraltos have always been a powerful presence on the popular music scene, whether in blues, disco, jazz, or as purveyors of the Great American Songbook. There is no way that I can cover all of the great (and near-great) contraltos in recorded history, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try! Today's selections span a wide chronological range , even for this podcast: nearly 120 years, and include voices both fleet and monolithic (and sometimes both). We begin with a tribute to the late Polish coloratura contralto Ewa Podleś and along with way we hear the most famous contraltos like Kathleen Ferrier and Marian Anderson, and jazz and pop contraltos like Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson. We also sample singers from the earlier twentieth century such as Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Cloe Elmo, Clara Butt, Eugenia Mantelli, Kerstin Thorborg, and Sigrid Onégin (about whom I spill some major tea!) Throughout the episode are sprinkled some of the most beautiful voices of any kind that I have ever heard: the Scottish Caroline Kaart, the Romanian Florica Cristofereanu, the Czech Věra Soukupová, the Dutch Aafje Heynis, the French Germaine Cernay, the British Norma Procter, and the Russian Valentina Levko. And if like me you have despaired of ever hearing another true contralto again in our lifetime, we hear in young Jasmin White cause for rejoicing. And if your favorites are not heard today, fear not, for this is the tip of the iceberg: many more great singers will follow when the series continues in two weeks. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Growing up in a Harlem tenement perched above a record store, the Anel Sisters spent their Saturday “cleaning days” listening to albums and 45's bought from their chore allowance. Barbara and Lili developed an early love of music from their mother, who exposed them to eclectic playlists' ranging from Afro-Cuban jazz, Sarah Vaughn, Tchaikovsky, to Dizzy Gillespie. A trip to see “The Sound of Music”, inspired Barbara to transpose music from the film on the piano. The twins were encouraged by their grandparents to follow their own artistic paths, Barbara was gifted her first piano, from her grandmother. Lili's grandfather gave her a white toy guitar; dressed to the nines he with would sneak into Mass to hear her sing in choir, a voice he could hear above the others. The sisters took divergent paths. After studying at the Eddie Simon Guitar school and the Shelia Jordan workshop, Lili jumped headfirst into the Greenwich Village music scene and went on to record the first of her nine albums. Barbara graduated with honors from C.C.N.Y with a degree in music and , after seeing the devastating realities from her sisters struggles in the music industry, she chose a career in law enforcement allowing her to compose and create music on her own terms.  Join these master composers, songwriters, and performers as they share their lives, adversities, and challenges overcome, with heart, laughter, and graceful honesty. It is my pleasure to welcome Barbara and Lili Anel to this episode of Intrinsic Drive  ® .Lili has recorded eight albums including,  “Laughed Last”, “High-Octane Coffee”, “Dream Again”, “Every Second in Between”, “I Can See Bliss From Here”, “Another Place, Another Time”, “Better Days”, and “Better Days Remastered”. Ep.113 The Best Vocal Exercises For Chest Voice With Line Hilton

BAST Training podcast

BAST founder Line Hilton joins Alexa for another instalment in the ongoing series ‘The Best Vocal Exercises for'. This week they'll be discussing chest voice. Find out what a vocal range is, how many we have, why this is a debated topic, how to identify and access chest voice and how singing teachers can create the best vocal exercises for using chest voice. KEY TAKEAWAYS In terms of singers, chest voice refers to the lower and more powerful range of their vocals. It produces a rich, full-bodied sound felt in the chest and is used for lower and mid-range notes. Chest voice is just one component of a singer's overall vocal range. Chest voice is associated with power, projection, and emotional expression. Singers develop and strengthen their chest voice through exercises and technique to improve control, range, and tonal quality. Professional training helps coordinate chest voice with other registers. When we're in a chest voice our TA is engaged. This means that we have more mass coming together on the vertical vocal folds from the bottom to the top or just the top with no TA engagement. This leads to a bigger or louder tone.  A glottal cycle refers to the complete opening and closing sequence of the vocal folds during a single vibration cycle. It is the basis of sound production in the larynx. The vocal folds close to block airflow (closed phase) and then open to allow airflow and create vibrations (open phase). Skilled control of the glottal cycle enables singers to produce different pitches and vocal effects.  The first thing Line does when teaching chest voice is to establish if her student has control and stability over the larynx and the vocal folds.  BEST MOMENTS‘A register is just an area of your range' ‘Anything from G4 down for females is chest, and for males anything from D4 down is chest'‘I've heard people belting up to F5 but if they go beyond that it might all fall apart' ‘It might be harder for a shy person who doesn't have a loud voice to find this register' ‘Those who are extroverts tend to over engage their TA and get vocal fold issues' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: www.basttraining.com Social Media: @basttraining Relevant Links & Mentions:  Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 62 How to Choose the Best Vocal Exercises with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 73 The Best Vocal Exercises for Laryngeal Stability with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 83 The Best Vocal Exercises for Sick Voices with Line Hilton Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 44 Exploring Vocal Registers with Chris Johnson The work of Dr Ingo Titze BAST Blog - Case Study: Working with Shy Singers: https://www.basttraining.com/case-study-working-with-shy-singers/ BAST Blog - Case Study: The One with the Yelly Child: https://www.basttraining.com/case-study-the-one-with-the-yelly-child/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 59 Top Tongue Tips for Boosting High Frequency Energy with Kerrie Obert Repertoire mentioned: Adele; Jessie J; Elton John; Billy Joel; Ed Sheeran; Ella Fitzgerald; Dianne Reeves; Cassandra Wilson; Mark Murphy; Kurt Elling Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 110 Articulation and Singing: Assessing Jaw Behaviour with Chris Johnson Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 65 The Top Benefits of Vocal Massage with Lydia Flock Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 74 Understanding Manual Therapy with Walt Fritz BAST Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@basttraining ABOUT THE PODCASTBAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. As you know if you've been listening this season, we have a single subject we're going to be exploring across ten episodes, and that subject is fusion. Fusion means much more, I think, than just the music that most people think of when they hear the word. I'm not talking exclusively about the big-name bands from the 1970s: the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and Weather Report. Those groups, and the Miles Davis bands from 1969 to 1975, and many other less immediately recognizable groups, all did the classic fusion thing, playing extremely complex music that blurred the lines between progressive rock and jazz. We talked about those acts in the second and third episodes this season, when I interviewed drummer Lenny White and trumpeter Randy Brecker, both of whom were around then and were actively participating in making that music. If you think of fusion as a mindset, though, rather than a style of music, the discussion gets a lot more interesting. And that's really how I prefer to think about it. It's not just a specific narrow slice of music, it's a way you approach any kind of music you make. KRS-One said rapping is something you do, hip-hop is something you live. And that's kind of close to what I'm talking about here, conceptually speaking. Fusion can be a style of music, or it can be a way you approach the making of music. And the people who fall into the latter category are the ones who I find to be the most interesting, and the ones who are more likely to have careers where almost every record they play on is at least worth hearing, worth giving a chance. You may not like all of it. But they're creative enough that they've earned the benefit of the doubt.Brandon Ross is one of those guys. He's been on a hell of an artistic journey over the course of the last forty-some years. His first recording was on an Archie Shepp album from 1975, There's a Trumpet in My Soul. He worked with violinist Leroy Jenkins. He worked with saxophonists Marion Brown and Oliver Lake. He worked with Henry Threadgill for something like ten years, in multiple bands or one evolving band. He worked with Cassandra Wilson on her breakout album, Blue Light Til Dawn, and the follow-up, New Moon Daughter. He's made albums under his own name. The reason a lot of people probably know his name right now is he's the guitar player in Harriet Tubman, with bassist Melvin Gibbs, who's been on this podcast before, and drummer JT Lewis. And now here's the really interesting part – Brandon Ross has an album coming out a little later this year on my label, Burning Ambulance Music. He's got a new group, see, called Breath Of Air, which is a trio featuring violinist Charles Burnham and drummer Warren Benbow. Something I learned in this interview, by the way, is that Brandon has done the guitar-violin thing several times, with Leroy Jenkins and also with Terry Jenoure, a very interesting violin player who isn't nearly as well known as she ought to be. When I was researching Brandon to come up with questions for this interview, I learned about her and now I'm gonna be diving into her catalog, and I suggest you do the same. Some of her music is on streaming services; she released a 3CD set called Portal last year that's fantastic. Anyway, Breath Of Air has a self-titled debut, most of which was recorded live in February 2020, right before the pandemic started and live music went away, and like I said it'll be out a little bit later this year.In the meantime, enjoy this conversation between me and Brandon Ross. We talk about his work with Henry Threadgill, about his work with Cassandra Wilson, about Archie Shepp and Oliver Lake and Marion Brown, about Harriet Tubman, about the sort of No Wave punk-funk jazz scene of the late '70s and early '80s that included Ornette Coleman's Prime Time and Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society and all the other guitarists that came out of that scene, including Michael Gregory Jackson and Kelvyn Bell and Jean-Paul Bourelly and James "Blood" Ulmer and Vernon Reid… we also talk about his particular approach to the guitar and to sound. There's a lot to learn and a lot to think about in the hour or so of conversation you're about to hear. I hope you enjoy listening to it.Music in this episode:Breath Of Air, “No One On Earth Can See You Anymore” (from Breath Of Air)Henry Threadgill, “Little Pocket Size Demons” (from Too Much Sugar For A Dime)Harriet Tubman, “Farther Unknown” (from The Terror End Of Beauty)

Before he reigned supreme at the Grammy Awards, before he was an Oscar-winning composer (for Pixar's Soul), before he was bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and well before he'd become one of the rare jazz artists considered a household name, Jon Batiste was simply a rising star of the piano, making what he called “social music.”  Batiste hails from Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. He was born into a musical family, and thrust into the mix at an early age, singing and playing drums. At around 11, he switched from drums to piano, and never looked back. Eventually he moved to New York to go to Julliard. But while he was still in New Orleans, he studied and played with Alvin Batiste, who he says taught him to “Be you, even if it's the most obtuse thing. Do that rather than imitate something else...” And that original lesson has guided him throughout his life and career. While he was still in school, Batiste started to work as a sideman for jazz artists including Abbey Lincoln, Roy Hargrove, Cassandra Wilson, and Wynton Marsalis. He learned about leadership and collaboration from all of them.  And it's in this space of artistic awakening in his 20s, when he begins to assert himself fully, that we find him in this episode. Recorded in 2014, our conversation tells Jon's origin story, his early influences and experiences, his philosophy of music and of leadership.  This episode also marks the beginning of a partnership between The Third Story and WBGO Studios. During the month of May, you'll find another episode from The Third Story archive each week at wbgo.org/studios and then in June, new episodes will drop every other week.  www.wbgo.org/studioswww.third-story.com
