Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley since 2015, Jess Phillips has never shied away from controversy nor has she been afraid to veer away from Labour Party lines to uphold her political principles. For this episode, we're joined by Phillips to discuss some of the most pressing issues in British politics during a fortnight that has seen shocking scenes of violence and racism unfold across UK streets. Following Labour's recent election win, Phillips is Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Safeguarding) at the Home Office. She's also the author of a new book, Let's Be Honest, which combines memoir and manifesto to discuss what's going wrong with politics and offers ideas on how to fix it. She came to the Intelligence Squared stage recently, appearing live at London's Kiln Theatre for a talk recorded on Thursday 8 August for which she was joined in conversation by the journalist, author and broadcaster Helen Lewis. First, historian, journalist, dissident, and human rights activist Craig Murray talks about running as Member of Parliament for the Workers Party and his activism around Gaza and Assange. Then Jody McIntyre joins to talk about why he's running for MP for Birmingham Yardley. Then Palestine Youth Movement organizer Remo Ibrahim reveals what REALLY happened at the synagogue protest and Jewish anti-zionist Rich Siegel talks about why he condemned the sale of occupied land. Craig Murray is an historian, ex British ambassador to Uzbekistan, whistleblower, friend and campaigner for Assange's freedom and Workers Party candidate for Parliament under George Galloway's Workers Party in Blackburn. Jody McIntyre is a candidate for Parliament under George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain. He is the sole independent candidate running in the Birmingham-Yardley constituency, located in the city of Birmingham, England, against the Labour Party's Jess Phillips, who is a member of Labour Friends of Israel and is likely to become a minister in the new government, if she wins re-election Birmingham-Yardley. Jody has cerebral palsy and is a lifelong activist, focused on Palestine, disability-rights, and education. He converted to Islam as a young adult and has lived in Palestine multiple times, including being there on the day of the October 7th attacks. In 2010, he was the subject of national-news coverage when he was dragged out of his wheelchair by police multiple times while participating in mass protests against budget cuts and tuition hikes. Remo Ibrahim is an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement, LAOCIE chapter (@palestinianyouthmovement, @pymlaocie). He is committed to the struggle for Palestinian liberation, and to confronting Zionism and white supremacy wherever it appears. Rich Siegel is a musician and activist. Raised in what he calls “the cult of atheistic Zionism posing as Judaism”, in his youth Rich was very involved as a supporter of Israel, notably as a teenage Zionist youth group president. He then lived in Israel in his 20's working as a pianist in a luxury hotel. Rich's change of heart began as a spiritual awakening, by which he came to see that Jewish tribal identity and the state of Israel were worshipped as idols. Then he became acquainted with Zionism's crimes against humanity, which contradicted the Zionist narrative he grew up with. Organizing demonstrations against Zionist activity in the northern New Jersey suburbs where he lives, Rich's activism hit a high note when a talk he gave in front of the Teaneck town council went viral. Recently Rich was fired from a teaching job at a local music school due to a pro-Palestine Facebook post. He is director of Deir Yassin Remembered, a pro-Palestine charity and activist organization. He is currently running for Congress in New Jersey, with the Ceasefire and Justice Party. **Please support The Katie Halper Show ** For bonus content, exclusive interviews, to support independent media & to help make this program possible, please join us on Patreon / thekatiehalpershow Get your Katie Halper Show Merch here! https://katiehalper.myspreadshop.com/all Follow Katie on Twitter: @kthalps

With guest speakers Hannah Phillips and Jess Phillips MP. Polarised and vitriolic debates are a problem for democracy, yet increasingly politicians and public officials are having to deal with intimidation and abuse – sometimes with tragic consequences. This is particularly an issue for women and those from minority backgrounds. With a general election looming in the UK, the tone of political debate, both online and in-person, is already steeped in anger. Yet, as the recently published findings of the Jo Cox Foundation's Civility Commission highlight, a more inclusive, fairer, and kinder public space is possible. To explore how we have reached a point of toxic politics, and how we can move beyond it, Cumberland Lodge is pleased to host a conversation with Hannah Phillips, Consultant with the Jo Cox Foundation, who has led on the work of the Civility Commission, and Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, who has been on the receiving end of much abuse in her political career.

Well, firstly someone tables a motion: usually John, and usually something along the lines of "We need more pint glasses". Next the motion is debated, where you might hear Robin argue that "We have enough pint glasses here, what we really need is more beer mats!". This goes on for weeks, until eventually the motion is put to a vote (and because there's only two permenant residents at The Moon Under Water every single motion has ended in a tie). But how are big decisions made in the Other Realm? Well, this week's guest will be able to shine a light on that - it's politician Jess Phillips! In her frank and funny talk for 5x15, Jess Phillips MP discusses her new book Everything You Really Need to Know About Politics with Rosie Boycott and lifts the lid on what a career in politics is really like and why it matters – to all of us. From agonizing decisions on foreign air strikes to making headlines about orgasms, from sitting in on history-making moments at the UN to eating McCain's potato smiles at a black-tie banquet in China, the life of a politician is never dull. And it's also never been more important. But politics is far bigger than Westminster, and in her new book and in this event, Jess Phillips makes the compelling case for why now, more than ever, we all need to be a part of it. Taking us from the sublime to the ridiculous, Jess gives us a look at the inner workings of politics and the rules governing us all that are often a mystery to an outsider. She covers it all in her own inimitable style giving us the inside track on party politics, changing laws, standing for election, constituency work, the press, social media, and everything in between – this is what is really going on in British politics. Jess Phillips was first elected as the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley in 2015 and was elected chair of the Women's Parliamentary Labour Party in September 2016. At a time when many of us feel the world isn’t listening, Jess Phillips is here to teach us how to get organised, speak out and fight against injustice in all its forms. Jess Phillips is no stranger to speaking truth to power. Since becoming the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley in 2015, she has earned widespread acclaim as an authentic, fearless and uncompromising force for good in British politics, unafraid to stand up against injustice no matter the cost. Now she returns to How To Academy to teach you how to dig deep, get organised, and find the courage and the tools you need to take action. In this conversation with broadcaster and journalist Matthew Stadlen, she’ll share her own experiences speaking truth to power – and share the stories of the accidental heroes who have been brave enough to risk everything, become whistle-blowers and successfully fight back. This episode features some unbeeped bad language and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Jess Phillips is the Member of Parliament for Birmingham Yardley and the author of Truth to Power and Everywoman. When she’s not standing up in the House of Commons, calling out the prime minister for playing “bully-boy games” during Brexit votes, she’s shedding light on the reality of being a woman in politics. That reality is pretty terrifying. She receives death and rape threats every day of her life. And one night received 600 rape threats in one night. She has panic alarms installed in her home and office. On 16 June 2016, Phillips’s friend, the MP Jo Cox, was assassinated by a far-right terrorist in her constituency. We spoke to Phillips about Jo Cox, and how she should be remembered. In this episode, Phillips talks about her admiration for Annie Kenney, the working-class suffragette and socialist feminist. She also discusses the lessons we can learn from Daphne Caruana Galizia, the Maltese journalist and anti-corruption activist who was murdered in October 2017. Phillips also pays tribute to the activists behind Ireland's Repeal The 8th campaign to legalise abortion. Please subscribe, rate, and review. Find us on Twitter and Instagram: @HBHPod. Well, old friend, here we are again. The end of another season. Where does the time go? I saved this guest for the finale because she's bloody spectacular. Jess Phillips is the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, a campaigner on women's rights, an outspoken critic of Brexit, anti-semitism and the politics of the hard-left, and the author of an acclaimed book, Everywoman: One Woman's Truth About Speaking The Truth. She joins me to talk about coping with failure in politics, living with daily death threats and how she stays sane by prioritising her female friends. She talks about the failure in contraception (!) that resulted in her eldest son, her failure to get on the Home Office Fast Track scheme and, in an extremely moving admission, her self-perceived failure to fix her brother's drug addiction. This makes it sound pretty heavy, but Jess is so naturally funny and such a self-deprecating force of nature, that I promise you this interview will leave you feeling energised and quite possibly punching the air. That's it for season five (apart from one bonus live record COMING SOON. Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss out). I'll be back in the autumn with eight brilliant new guests. * A THANK YOU FROM ME: Thank you so much for subscribing and rating and reviewing and for all your lovely messages over this season and all the others. It really does mean the world to me. Truly. And if you don't like me / this podcast / actually took time out of your day to leave a one-star review / worry that my guests all went to Oxbridge (they didn't) / are too middle-class (they aren't) / think I'm too gushing (well...ok, maybe you have a point there, but I genuinely mean it when I say someone's amazing...) then please know that however angry or sad or lonely or un-heard you feel, I send you nothing but love in return. Bet that winds you up, doesn't it? To the rest of you: I feel so blessed for your companionship on this crazy, beautiful journey. You have helped me make sense of things. You have met me in a place of vulnerability and made me feel so much stronger. You have shown me that love, compassion and kindness is strength. You have taught me what I always suspected: that failure does not have to be an end point, but can instead be a stepping stone on a journey towards greater understanding. Thank you. * Jess Phillips's new book, Truth to Power, is out in October and available to pre-order here. * I am thrilled to be taking How To Fail on tour around the UK in October, sharing my failure manifesto with the help of some very special guests.
