With over 15 years of experience as a speaker, author, and educator, Poornima challenges deep-seated biases and empowers organizations to foster environments where everyone can thrive.Growing up in Singapore, she often found herself questioning rigid educational norms—thinking outside the box in a system that didn't always embrace it. Poornima believes that awareness is the first step to change, urging individuals to ask, "Who is your bias buddy?"—a challenge to seek perspectives beyond our own blind spots.A TED speaker and Thinkers50-recognized management thinker, Poornima's expertise has influenced leading global corporations. One common issue for athletes with some experience in their sport is struggling with 1–2 specific movements in grunt-style conditioning workouts. Even after extensive effort to develop these movements, they can still be a weak point, especially in competition or qualifier workouts. How can we help athletes improve at these movements? Should we focus on mastery, or reframe progress by mitigating their impact in competition to make them less of a weakness? Adjusting technique can provide quick wins, but the same stumbling blocks often reappear over time. In this episode, we discuss different approaches to structuring training progressions, strategies to keep athletes motivated, and what we can realistically expect when working on these "goat" movements in conditioning. Top Crew Academy is a coaching service run by Sam Dutney. He explains the differences and how they apply to masters rowing. Timestamps Different modes of training methodology are polarised and pyramidal. Most of the time people use pyramidal so the training intensity distribution is like a pyramid. It has a large base of low intensity, a moderate amount of mid intensity and a small amount of high intensity. Polarised training skips the mid intensity and has 20% at high intensity. 02:00 Percentages are 60: 30: 10% for pyramidal. Rowing training has been pyramidal for a long time - since 1930s. Polarised became popular in mid 2000s and is based on a study done on elite cyclists in endurance sports. 04:45 is HIIT influencing this change? The benefits of polarised training link well to the benefits of High Intensity Interval Training. What drives the benefits are the high intensity training - the top levels are very similar - the top level training is at or near top efforts. A huge amount of rowing performance comes from efficiency and time in the boat. Develop the skill in a polarised model in the low intensity sessions. 07:00 How to choose which mode is right for you Available time - if you can only train 3 times a week. Do a program with one low intensity and the other two as high intensity/ If doing 4-5 sessions a polarised model may be more suitable. Pyramidal training is effective in the early season and head racing. because you aren't trying to operate at maximum intensity. So pyramidal can be effective at this time of year. A 2016 paper on runners compared pyramidal and polarised training for 16 weeks; The results from pyramidal for 8 weeks and then shifting into polarised for 8 weeks was very much more effective than all the others. The polarised hard sessions have to be really hard and the easy sessions need to be really easy. As we get older you don't recovery as well that's where polarised training can help recovery for masters. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. The UNDP's 2023/24 Human Development Report (HDR), titled "Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarised world," tells a troubling tale: that the rebound in the global Human Development Index (HDI) - which encapsulates a nation's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, education, and life expectancy - has been fragmented, deficient, and marked by disparities. This uneven development progress is leaving the poorest behind, exacerbating inequality, and stoking political polarisation on a global scale. The result is a dangerous gridlock that must be urgently tackled through collective action. So what can be done, with inequality on the rise? We speak to Niloy Banerjee, the Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to discuss the issues, and also the solutions towards tackling them.

Stephen Seiler has been a guest on the podcast 3 times now and is one of our most poplar guests ever. He also holds the record for our longest podcast, over 2 hours!   In 2018 I was fortunate enough to listen to Stephen speak at the Endurance Coaching Summit hosted by TrainingPeaks in Manchester. His talk on polarised training had me hooked, and I've been a convert to this type of training ever since. I can personally vouch for its role in helping me to stay fit and healthy through the pandemic and remain relatively injury free. Something I cannot say about my training methods in my 30's and 40's.   Since this podcast, polarised training and Zone 2 training have continued to grow in popularity. There's no doubt in my mind that while there may be other approaches to developing fitness for endurance events, this one offers the most sustainable long term benefits for both health and fitness. You may have heard my previous podcasts with Dr Phil Maffetone, Dr Dan Plews and Prof Paul Laursen. Each of these eminent coaches have spoken of methodology that has polarised training at its heart.  This is a loooong podcast, almost 2 hours, and the time absolutely flew by. Stephen has such a great message, it's easy to listen to his stories and experiences. I have absolute confidence that you will find so much value in this conversation, and that it will benefit your own training or coaching. Please enjoy this show as we talk about: The ‘holy trinity' of monitoring intensity and why you must learn to use all three Why 95% of endurance athletes can thrive using just three training zones The simple, three step method for determining training zones without visiting a sports science lab How the African distance runners use internal measures of intensity for much of the time and only use pace when preparing for races What the 80/20 numbers really mean and how they apply to you Why the principles of polarised training are even more important if you have only 8-10 hours to train each week Hierarchy of Training Needs - what should come first when developing your fitness Stephen Seiler posts a lot of good information on Twitter. 95 percent of the world economy (measured by GDP) is exploring the idea of launching a central bank digital currency (CBDC), and many countries including Nigeria and China are entering into the close-to-launch or fully launched phase. But what is the hype about? In this episode of the Sound of Economics, Maria Demertzis invites Grégory Claeys and Josh Lipsky to discuss the purpose of having a CBDC from both a retail and a wholesale perspective. Particularly, they raise the geopolitical importance of CBDCs, with the example of the G7's financial sanctions against Russia that ruled out several Russian banks from the SWIFT system and froze Russian Foreign Exchange Reserves. However, if CBDCs are largely implemented, whilst they could help the EU achieve more autonomy in international finance, they could also be used by countries to bypass western sanctions and challenge the dollar hegemony in the current international financial system.

On Monday 8 August the FBI launched an unprecedented search of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home. Agents were reportedly searching for classified documents, including those related to nuclear weapons. The raid has prompted Republican officials to condemn the Department of Justice and fuelled speculation that Trump will pursue a presidential run in 2024. Emily Tamkin speaks to Nick Bryant, the former BBC New York correspondent and author of When America Stopped Being Great: A History of the Present, which is released in paperback by Bloomsbury on 18 August. They talk about the reaction to the raid from the US right, as well as what paved the way for Trump's political rise, covering post-Cold War optimism and the scandal-wracked Nineties, and how the billionaire became a working-class hero. They also discuss whether Ronald Reagan was the “godfather of polarisation”, and if this division is here to stay after these recent dramatic events. Polarised discourse misses that freedom expects from the individual as much as it provides. An individual must hold and display certain values within a working pro-freedom society. This ideal comes from the ancient Greeks philosophy of stoicism: citizens should apply the virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and temperance. As Aurelius would put it “be a good person”. If the citizens and the state can both respect each other and act with values that are in concert with each other, then a pro-freedom civilisation is possible with all the benefits that this brings. But if the state is oppressive, the rationale actions of the affect individuals, and the long term consequences for their civilisation, are obviously going to be antithetical to progress. In our fast-paced ‘fiat' system where debate is dominated by short form communication, we are too quick to prejudge and pigeonhole people. Pro-freedom advocates are associated with far right politics. Yet, any long-form conversation with pro-freedom advocates indicates this ideology appeals to a wide political spectrum as it is predicated on sound and sustainable principles. In short, slowing down and spending time with people we find our commonality exceeds our differences. That is the Bitcoin way. In this interview, I talk to Ragnar Lifthrasir from Guns N' Bitcoin. That is the Bitcoin way.In this interview, I talk to Ragnar Lifthrasir from Guns N' Bitcoin. We discuss what it means to be pro-freedom, the role of the state, the importance of values to build good civilisations, Bitcoin groupthink, printed guns and the safe gun culture. This episode was inspired by a post I saw recently, in which a well-known author discussed the problem with people who claimed to be victims. Often when I see a potentially controversial post, I'll head to the comment section and be blown away by the heated exchanges between people on opposite sides of the issue. The polarising nature of complicated and deeply nuanced issues blows me away and frustrates me to no end. We seek to judge before we understand and I discuss some adaptive reasons for this.I also discuss the key differences between authentic vulnerability and this 'victim mentality' we see popping up and try to help those who don't understand the complexities of mental illness find empathy for those who struggle, whilst simultaneously emploring anyone who faces the challenges of mental illness take responsibility for working on their issues. I also dare to offer some of my own theories around why society is becoming so fractured and polarised and hope in doing that we can become more aware of how this division affects our own thoughts and feelings, especially when we feel unnecessarily threatened.
