In this live conversation at Shakespeare & Company in Paris, Adam Biles speaks with writer Ian Leslie about John & Paul: A Love Story in Songs, Leslie's acclaimed exploration of the creative and emotional bond at the heart of The Beatles. Together they trace John Lennon and Paul McCartney's relationship from their first meeting as bereaved teenagers in Liverpool, through the crucible of Hamburg, the frenzy of Beatlemania, and the artistic revolutions of the 1960s. Leslie explains why their partnership was neither simple friendship nor sibling rivalry, but a passionate, volatile, and profoundly collaborative romance—one that shaped their music as much as their music shaped them. They discuss myth-making around the band's breakup, why McCartney's reputation took decades to recover, and how John and Paul remained “entangled particles” long after going their separate ways. A rich, moving conversation about genius, chemistry, and the power of creative partnership.Buy John & Paul, A Love Story in Songs: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/john-and-paul*lan Leslie is a journalist and author of two acclaimed books on human behaviour, Born Liars, and Curious. As centres of learning, universities should be places where ideas, opinions and beliefs can be openly discussed, challenged and interrogated. They also have a duty of care to ensure their diverse community students and staff feel safe, welcome and free from discrimination. But some claim that an over-zealous focus on inclusion and appeasing students has led to an erosion of academic freedom and allowed a ‘cancel culture' to dominate higher education, leading to a worrying expected conformity of opinion on important contemporary issues. This is all playing out against the wider backdrop of growing polarisation and identity politics. For this episode, we speak to two experts in this space to find out what practical steps universities can take to encourage more constructive disagreement and engagement with differing viewpoints among students as part of their learning. And how institutions can uphold the requirements of free speech and nurture plurality across campus, while protecting those most affected by contentious issues. You will hear from: Caroline Mehl, the co-founder and executive director of the Constructive Dialogue Institute, a non-profit organisation that builds educational tools to equip US higher education institutions and other organisations with skills to communicate and collaborate across differences. She founded the CDI with psychologist and author Jonathan Haidt in 2017 having previously worked as an associate research scholar and visiting scholar at New York University's Stern School of Business. Abhishek Saha, a professor of mathematics at Queen Mary University of London and co-founder of the London Universities Council for Academic Freedom. Abhishek was heavily engaged in lobbying the UK government over key details of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 which came into force this year. You can find more insight and advice on how universities can encourage respectful disagreement, while handling sensitive topics with care and protecting academic freedom in our latest spotlight guide: Dealing with division: the polarised university.

In a world that forces us to pick sides, Jesus offers a radical alternative. What if our response to division wasn't more division, but extraordinary love? Anna Shavit is one of Czechia's top experts on political marketing and has herself worked on campaigns for the likes of Karel Schwarzenberg and Andrej Babiš's ANO. So how does electioneering for October's general elections compare to previous years? And – going by her personal experience of the billionaire politician – would Mr. Babiš have any qualms about forming a government with anti-system parties? I discussed those questions and more with the Charles University academic.
This is the fifth episode of Overcoming Polarisation: Paths to Common Ground, a podcast series from Debating Europe, Friends of Europe's citizen engagement unit. This episode features a recording from the public session of our European Young Leaders #EYL40 seminar in Bucharest, a discussion on rebuilding trust in a polarised society. Europe is feeling fractured. Whether it's politics, climate, tech, or trust in institutions, more and more people are feeling left out, unheard, and uncertain about the future. But what if we could flip the script? What if instead of fuelling division, we looked for common ground? In this series, we're diving into the real issues behind polarisation. Economic inequality, climate anxiety, digital disruption, and bringing together voices from across the spectrum. From policymakers, activists, business leaders, and most importantly, citizens' voices via our latest study “Voices for Choices”. In today's episode, recorded at the end of May, the participants to the public session discussed a polarised society in light of the recent Romanian presidential elections. You will hear the voices of many of our EYLs: Oana Țoiu, Daria Kaleniuk, Maria Nefeli, Andras Kulja, Andrei Popoviciu, Bora Muzhaqi and Min-Sung Sean Kim. They are joined by other notable guests such as Dragoș Tuță (Sustainability Embassy), Ciprian Stănescu (Social Innovation Solutions Romania) and Robert Santa (Rethink Romania). You will also hear insightful interventions from several other participants in the public session. If you want to comment on this episode you can send us an e-mail: press@friendsofeurope.org
The shootings of two politicians and their partners in the US state of Minnesota has sent shockwaves through the state - and the country, with many states taking precautions to protect their representatives from harm. But analysts say the shootings are the latest in a long line of politically motivated attacks and acts of violence, mostly from right-wing extremists. Deborah Groarke takes a look at this troubled history - and asks, what about Australia?

Donald Trump's marathon speech to the US Congress at the start of his second term unveiled his sweeping conservative vision for America. Reaction to it has largely followed political lines, with Republicans hailing his remarks, and Democrats saying he has overstepped his constitutional authority and is causing widespread harm with his changes. And few in the international community are happy either.

One common issue for athletes with some experience in their sport is struggling with 1–2 specific movements in grunt-style conditioning workouts. Even after extensive effort to develop these movements, they can still be a weak point, especially in competition or qualifier workouts. How can we help athletes improve at these movements? Should we focus on mastery, or reframe progress by mitigating their impact in competition to make them less of a weakness? Adjusting technique can provide quick wins, but the same stumbling blocks often reappear over time. In this episode, we discuss different approaches to structuring training progressions, strategies to keep athletes motivated, and what we can realistically expect when working on these "goat" movements in conditioning. Top Crew Academy is a coaching service run by Sam Dutney. He explains the differences and how they apply to masters rowing. Timestamps Different modes of training methodology are polarised and pyramidal. Most of the time people use pyramidal so the training intensity distribution is like a pyramid. It has a large base of low intensity, a moderate amount of mid intensity and a small amount of high intensity. Polarised training skips the mid intensity and has 20% at high intensity. 02:00 Percentages are 60: 30: 10% for pyramidal. Rowing training has been pyramidal for a long time - since 1930s. Polarised became popular in mid 2000s and is based on a study done on elite cyclists in endurance sports. 04:45 is HIIT influencing this change? The benefits of polarised training link well to the benefits of High Intensity Interval Training. What drives the benefits are the high intensity training - the top levels are very similar - the top level training is at or near top efforts. A huge amount of rowing performance comes from efficiency and time in the boat. Develop the skill in a polarised model in the low intensity sessions. 07:00 How to choose which mode is right for you Available time - if you can only train 3 times a week. Do a program with one low intensity and the other two as high intensity/ If doing 4-5 sessions a polarised model may be more suitable. Pyramidal training is effective in the early season and head racing. because you aren't trying to operate at maximum intensity. So pyramidal can be effective at this time of year. A 2016 paper on runners compared pyramidal and polarised training for 16 weeks; The results from pyramidal for 8 weeks and then shifting into polarised for 8 weeks was very much more effective than all the others. The polarised hard sessions have to be really hard and the easy sessions need to be really easy. As we get older you don't recovery as well that's where polarised training can help recovery for masters. Want easy live streams like this? Instant broadcasts to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn. Like many of us, Anand Giridharadas (American political commentator, bestselling author) despaired how the world had become stuck in a fractured suckhole and he could no longer convince people to change their hearts and minds to be kinder and better. So he went on a mission to find out how to persuade more effectively, resulting in his recent book The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts, Minds, and Democracy. In this chat, the former foreign correspondent and New York Times columnist argues this wild idea: Progressives working on issues like race equality and climate (and, um, an Indigenous Voice to parliament) need to give up on political purity and… persuade! This is not your usual “effective communications” thesis. We cover what we can learn from the Russian bot farms, A.O.C. and a cult deprogrammer. This episode comes at a critical time, as many of us are 1. feeling defeatist about progressive/humane discussion today, and 2. seeking techniques to equip us for being of service in a troubled world. Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is not only reshaping the security architecture of Europe, but is also influencing the EU's position as a global actor. With rising tensions between the US and China, the EU will find itself in an increasingly bipolar world. The rules-based global order is challenged and strategic relations around the world are being redefined. Key states from the so-called ‘Global South' are becoming more important for ‘the West' in its move to isolate Russia and to address global challenges. - Original publication on the EP Think Tank website - Subscription to our RSS feed in case your have your own RSS reader - Podcast available on Deezer, iTunes, TuneIn, Stitcher, YouTube Source: © European Union - EP
To mark one year since Matters of Life and Death joined the Premier Unbelievable network, we have a special one-off episode answering some questions emailed in by listeners. We discuss everything from whether Christians should lean into the culture wars to resist growing social liberalism, to how far we might go in suffering to care for elderly family members, and even whether it would be ethical to create lifelike child-sized sex robots to give to paedophiles in an effort to deter actual child abuse. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions, we're sorry we couldn't answer them all!
