This week Ari sits down with Liz Pelly, a prominent music journalist and author of the new book Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist. Liz's journalism has appeared in NPR, The Guardian, and Pitchfork among other prestigious publications. Preceded by an exposé in Harper's Magazine, Pelly's latest work, Mood Machine, pulls back the curtain on Spotify's exploitative practices and uncovers how those practices impact artists and listeners. In this episode, Liz gives the low down on research she conducted for the book and explains how Spotify has unfairly conspired with major labels since its launch. As she does in Mood Machine, Liz calls out Spotify's Perfect Fit Content (PFC) program and explains how its use of ghost artists degrades the integrity of their model for all. Ari and Liz discuss the value of music and how that can differ in the eyes of major corporations and individuals. Whether you're an artist, label, or listener who uses Spotify, this episode will help you understand the impact Spotify's model has on your relationship to music.https://www.instagram.com/lizpelly Harper's article: https://harpers.org/archive/2025/01/the-ghosts-in-the-machine-liz-pelly-spotify-musicians/Chapters00:00 The Inner Workings of Spotify12:48 Ghost Artists and the PFC Program37:50 Spotify's Launch and Major Label Relationships41:26 The Evolution of Streaming Contracts44:14 Valuing Music: A Cultural Perspective49:43 The Impact of Streaming on Music Value56:10 Algorithms and the Personalization of Music01:01:20 The Role of Music in Society01:07:23 Future Solutions for Musicians01:19:38 Defining Success in the New Music BusinessEdited and mixed by Ari DavidsMusic by Brassroots DistrictProduced by the team at Ari's TakeOrder the THIRD EDITION of How to Make It in the New Music Business: https://book.aristake.com Hosted on Acast. Behind Spotify's promise of infinite music lies a carefully engineered system that shapes not just what we hear, but how music itself gets made. Journalist Liz Pelly's explosive new book "Mood Machine" rips away the curtain on streaming's biggest player, revealing how its algorithms and backroom deals dictate the soundtrack to our lives. With major labels controlling 70% of streams and Spotify commanding over 600 million users, the stakes couldn't be higher. As artists like Björk decry streaming as "the worst thing that's happened to musicians," Pelly uncovers the true cost of our perfect playlists - and what we're really sacrificing for the illusion of endless choice. Today I welcome Ivan Pelly, Founder of the Ivan Bar to the show! In 2015, Ivan bought his last grocery-store nutrition bar. For him, they were either too small, too sweet, or just tasted… not so good. He thought he could do better, so he set out to make his own. He studied what kind of ingredients made for great nutrition and great taste, and got to work. After many, many attempts, he arrived at what he thinks is the best nutrition bar on the planet. These bars taste great; they're good for you, and you don't need to eat six of them to take the edge off your hunger. Initially, I just made them for himself and his family. Sooner or later, friends got their hands on them, and he was answering questions like, “could you make me some more?” and “where can I buy them?”. This popular demand made him think that maybe the “Ivan Bar” could find a life outside of his fridge and his kids' lunchboxes. And so they have. In today's episode, we touch on: How and why Ivan decided to create Ivan Bar. The ingredients in the bars and why he chose the ingredients that he did (hint: they're super clean, nutritious ingredients without any added junk!). What it's like to launch a brand that's build on nutrition – a brand that's built on the actual health benefits of the product, skipping those harmful additives and fillers. Advice Ivan has for those who are looking to start their own business. What Ivan uses to preserve his bars and make them shelf stable instead of harmful chemical preservatives. Why it's so hard for small businesses to get into grocery stores. His favorite flavor + a surprise for what's coming next for Ivan Bar (hint: it's delicious!). You can purchase Ivan Bars on ivan.bar – if you're on the central coast of California, you can also use this store locater to find out where you can snatch some of the bars in person as well. Tod continued on to take a track scholarship at Simon Fraser University, where he obtained All-American status three times. At SFU, Tod studied Kinesiology and took interest in becoming a physiotherapist. Growing up and pushing his body to its limits, he had found himself in a physio environment regularly due to a chronic hamstring problem. However, without getting the results he was hoping for, he decided to try a chiropractor – and he got amazing results. It turned out it wasn't his hamstring after all; It was his pelvis putting too much pressure on his hamstring. Inspired by his results, Tod decided he wanted to pursue a Doctorate of Chiropractic, and packed his bags for California where he attended the Southern California University of Health Sciences, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2005. Tod also obtained a Post-Doctorate certification in the Gonstead System of Analysis and Technique and after practicing in San Diego, California from 2005-2006, he was thrilled to return to his hometown where he founded The Pelly Clinic in April 2007. Tod is passionate about giving back to communities around the world via Chiropractic. He has volunteered his services for The Ride to end AIDS, and has provided Chiropractic care on several missions to impoverished countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Thailand, Laos, and most recently, his mission “A Small Step” in Nepal. In October 2019, Tod was named 2019 Chiropractor of the Year for North America, awarded by The Master's Circle Global (TMCG). Dr. Pelly was humbled to be the recipient of this distinguished honour. Outside of the Pelly Clinic, Tod resides in North Vancouver with his wife Julie, son Reid and daughter Kasey. Tod enjoys spending time with family at his cabin at Sakinaw Lake, water skiing, running, hiking, cheering on the Canucks and hitting the slopes on the mountains of the north shore and Whistler. Tod is also an avid soccer player, proudly playing for the NVFC from childhood into his adult years and now coaching his son Reid's team, the NVFC Rangers, as well as his daughter Kasey's team, the NSGSC Wildcats.
