On the evening of January 12, 2018, 15-year-old Michael Dillard disappeared from his home in Calvin, West Virginia. His mom didn’t think much of it at first but when she finished carrying the rest of the bags in and couldn’t find Michael, she became concerned. She called family for help and then alerted the authorities. The weather quickly turned that evening as a storm rolled into the area, first bringing rain and then snow. That storm made searching for Michael very difficult that night. Many searches were conducted in the weeks and months that followed Michael’s disappearance but the only item that was ever found was a jacket. We've almost arrived at the end of the first season of I Hate My Boss, and we couldn't resist taking a look back at some of the most memorable stories and hate-able bosses that we've discussed over the past few months; that's right, it's time for a clip show! Meghan's boss has set her up to fail, while Rebecca's boss has allowed his micromanaging wife to sour a perfectly good working relationship. Then, Jane's been dealing with a weirdly overprotective boss, while the honesty box in Manny's office was compromised by a scheming manager. And, of course, there's some Bad Bathroom Behavior going around in one office out there.New to I Hate My Boss? However, this episode isn't about those annoying coworkers; instead, we're talking about the truly toxic people that can make work a living hell, and how you can best deal with toxicity in the workplace. First off, Liz and Larry share their experiences dealing with — or, as is often the case, getting away from — overly-aggressive clients and employees. Then we help some listeners! Fortunately, Liz and Larry have plenty of advice for anyone who’s worried about making friends with the new boss in town. So maybe money can't buy you love, but can it buy you happiness in the workplace? As it turns out, the answer is rather complicated. On today's show, Liz and Larry tackle all sorts of issues surrounding the money we earn at work, from how our happiness is often dictated by how much our coworkers make, to how to best negotiate a raise with your boss. Then we're joined by Jonathan Fields, host and founder of Good Life Project, to talk about the ways we derive meaning from work beyond financial compensation, and our listener Erin joins us for a coaching session on how to stick up for yourself when bosses treat you poorly. Finally, our friends over at Penn & Pencil descend into envy and chaos because of annual bonuses. For more on how our happiness at work can be affected by our coworkers' salaries, check out this 2011 Princeton study. In last week’s episode, Liz and Larry gave their cautious support for office romance, but this week’s episode features some stories where relationships go very, very wrong. One intern’s office romance leads to multiple firings and fainting at an all-staff meeting, while another failed relationship forced a listener out of a job she loved. Then we answer questions from listeners whose offices seemingly changed overnight: Colleen isn’t sure if she should bail on her job after management scrapped her projects and fired half of her team, while another listener’s in charge of a team that’s losing their jobs to outsourcing. And one listener is outraged after HR emailed their whole office about some poo that was left on the floor of the women’s bathroom.New to I Hate My Boss?
