Among all the things Jai Rodriguez knows how to do well, not punching down is at the top of the list . Sharing his journey from going to Broadway to landing a role in the groundbreaking TV series, “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”, his grit and talent took the stage by storm, playing in shows like “Rent” and “The Producers”. He shares how he got started by going to his first audition at the age of 12 – a funny but inspiring anecdote on why you shouldn't take ‘no' for an answer easily. Jai also recounts his “Queer Eye” audition, the success of the show, and the overwhelming response they received early on. Despite the external glamor, Jai reveals his financial struggles during the press tours. He also gets real as he talks about a pivotal moment in his career during a meeting with agents, and how he was told that he may not be castable due to his identity – an untrue trope that stayed with him throughout a lot of his career. While it may have affected him deeply, Jai did not let it stop him from taking up space in the industry by rephrasing “you can't do it” as “it's just never been done before”. Jai Rodriguez is an actor and musician best known for his role in the original Fab Five 'Culture Vulture' in the award-winning show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”. He had his Broadway debut at the age of 18 when he was cast as Angel in the critically-acclaimed musical, “Rent”. His other credits include the long-running musical, “The Producers”, “Zanna, Don't!”, and an off-Broadway hit, “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”. He has a web series, “The Horizon”, which is the most-watched LGBTQ web series in the world.  Connect with Jai: Website: linktr.ee/jairodriguez Instagram: @jairodriguez TikTok: @jairodriguezworld Connect with Heather Vickery and the Was it Chance podcast: Slip into our Instagram DMs at @wasitchance More about Heather via @heather_vickeryandco on Instagram, @Braveheather on TikTok, and listen to The Brave Files More about Was It Chance using bpn.fm/wasitchance Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support the podcast on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast YouTube: YouTube.com/TheTheatrePodcast Threads, Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast TikTok: @thetheatrepodcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com My personal Instagram: @alanseales Learn more about your ad choices. This week on the podcast we are joined by our old friend and the host of Steven's Untitled Rock Show on Fuse, Steven Smith! We talk about why Steven hired Jonah to be the head writer on his show despite the fact that he had no television writing experience, recount Steven's iconic roles on '90s TV shows like "California Dreams" and "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and hear about his experience being on the first season of "Queer Eye For The Straight Guy." We also get deep into Steven's admiration of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and what made it such a groundbreaking show. Finally, we play a round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we collectively debate if music should be allowed at study hall, is there room in the candy aisle for the return of ZOURS and is a reboot of "The Sauce" worth your digital signature? Whether you're a fan of Steven's hosting, acting or podcasting, you'll learn something new about him—and possibly something new about yourself in the process—just by listening to this podcast. You might recognize him as the original 'Culture Vulture' from the groundbreaking show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy,” but there's so much more to this incredible soul. Meet Jai Rodriguez, a force of creativity and passion who has been shaping American culture for nearly two decades. Jai is most well known for his role as a member of the original Fab Five in Queer Eye For The Straight Guy and we get so many great stories from his time on Queer Eye in this conversation but his journey is rich and beautiful.   This is such an inspiring, heart-centered conversation that is sure to fill your emotional cup!  Jai's journey began at the young age of 12 when he embraced chance and went to his first audition, followed by performing arts high school. Then at only 18, Jai graced the Broadway stage as 'Angel' in the critically acclaimed musical “RENT.” From there, he took the theater world by storm, appearing in iconic productions like “The Producers” and creating the unforgettable role of ‘Zanna' in the off-Broadway sensation “Zanna, Don't!”. But that's not all - he even headlined a Las Vegas residency with the hit show “Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man.” Jai shares behind the scenes from many of his theatre adventures in this episode. Set to make his debut at 54/Below on Oct 26-28, for his latest cabaret show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” which promises an unforgettable performance filled with love, laughter, and personal stories, and it's a little bit naughty in all the right ways. Get your tickets to Jai's show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” at 54/Below (there is even a virtual option!) and be sure to connect with Jai on Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Website. A precious kid who was always finding a way to perform, Jai was always a theatre kid. 12-year-old Jai took intentional risk and called the first casting director to see if he had been cast in his first show. He was! After attending a performing arts high school, his mother refused to support a performing arts education for college. He snuck into the city to audition for an agent and instantly got signed to play Angel in RENT! You may never be the best at something but it's your uniqueness that sets you apart. Always be yourself and believe in yourself. RENT was Jai's “Waiter gig” in NYC. Jai took a 6-month leave of absence to do Zanna Don't and only making $400 a week (which was a massive pay cut) when he was asked to audition for Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. He was instructed to fabricate his backstory in order to be cast in Queer Eye. They aged him up and gave him a degree! This is the 20th anniversary of the original The Fab Five Jai's approach is to never punch down. Queer Eye was originally intended to be a comedy, no one expected it to be so heart-centered. Jai's show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” at 54/Below is funny, honest, and racy! Audience members will include Queer Eye cast members and other celebrities. Learn more about your ad choices. Jerry Kolber is the co-creator and Showrunner of National Geographic's #1 series, BRAIN GAMES, for which he received a Prime Time Emmy Nomination. Kolber and Atomic are a frequent collaborator with icon Pharrell Williams, having created and producer BRAINCHILD (Netflix) with Pharrell, as well as two upcoming documentaries. Kolber is the co-creator and host of the world's most popular 3x weekly kids educational podcast Who Smarted?, which had three million downloads in its first year. Kolber's other creator and Showrunner credits include Inked (A&E), Confessions of a Matchmaker (A&E), GE in the Wild (with Mythbusters' Adam Savage), and the space documentary 14 Minutes from Earth (Netflix). Kolber grew up in the swamp in South Florida. He was an avid cyclist, theater kid, and nationally ranked Lincoln-Douglas debater. Kolber didn't know regular people could make movies until he met a group of regular people at NYU who were studying to make movies, where he was studying theater production and design. Kolber's first job was as Business Manager of the legendary Jean Cocteau Repertory Theater on the Bowery. Kolber followed his time at the Cocteau Rep with a summer in the immediately- post-Communist Czech Republic, attempting to produce theater in circumstances better suited to producing a nervous breakdown. Upon his return to the states, Kolber began working in the stage theatrical departments at major movie studios, including Universal and Disney. Kolber began his career in television in the production finance department at Dick Wolf's Fox hit “New York Undercover”, bridging the gap between finance and creative. He was the production auditor on the first seasons of HBO's Sex And The City, and Bravo's Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, ultimately becoming line producer of more than fifty episodes of Queer Eye while learning to put the hair product in from the back. Kolber went on a wild ride in the rapidly expanding early landscape of unscripted television, working for E!, fuse, Bravo, Disney/ABC, National Geographic, Discovery ID, MTV, Animal Planet, and multiple A&E series, as an in- demand Co-EP, showrunner, and writer of unscripted entertainment. He always knew that one day he would bring his love of entertainment and disdain for outdated one-size-fits-all education together and Brain Games provided the first of many opportunities to show what was possible. Since 2010 Kolber, his team at Atomic, and their amazing partners have been responsible for some of the most successful and beloved edutainment programming in the world. Jai Rodriguez from the original Queer Eye For The Straight Guy steps Behind The Rope. Bonding over quarantine life, Jai and David share how they have been getting though the past few months during their time at home. Of course, the conversation quickly turns to Bravo and what it was like, in 2003, to be the very first reality show to ever exist on this now very famous network. Jai discusses how he was cast on Bravo’s original reality show, why he almost wasn't cast, and what working with Andy Cohen was really like. Once the show aired, Jai explains how life quickly changed as a result of this ratings blockbuster and the opportunities, or lack thereof, that followed when the show had ended. Those opportunities, in part, included a series regular role on Malibu Country with legends Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin plus parts of epic television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Grace & Frankie and The Rookie, to name a few. Jai discusses the challenges of transitioning from reality TV to scripted roles and how he was able to make that transition successfully. Speaking of Queer Eye, no conversation of the ground breaking series would be complete without a nod to the current Netflix “reboot”. Just in time for Pride month, David & Jai discuss the cultural significance of The Queer Eye Legacy and what is next for Jai in his career. Tune in now to hear all of this plus Jai’s current relationships with both Bravo and Netflix’s Queer Eye casts. @jairodriguez @behindvelvetrope @davidyontefhttps://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Before Netflix rebooted Queer Eye this year, I had never watched an episode of the original, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. When that series premiered in 2003, gay men were rarely represented on television as anything more than a token, much less the faces of an entire series. Back then, the general opinion, at least where I was raised, was that the media was “shoving homosexuality down our throats”; alongside Will & Grace, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy was a chief culprit.
