Today's guest is Dr. Nina Smiley, Director of Mindfulness Programming at Mohonk Mountain House and co-author of The Three Minute Meditator (translated into 7 languages), Mindfulness in Nature, and MetaPhysical Fitness. Nina delights in sharing simple and effective mindfulness meditation techniques and philosophies that can be used by real people in real lives (when they really need it) - one moment at a time! As the Director of Mindfulness at New York's Historic Mohonk Mountain House, Nina presents programs and teaches private classes on mindfulness and wellness. She creates and leads special topic sessions that address issues including weight loss, insomnia, relationships, parenting, and more. In a world with constant distractions that abound in modern life—from smartphones to social media—it is imperative we seek the solace and comfort of nature for our well-being. Nina's philosophy is rooted in giving guidance to mindfulness techniques that allow a meaningful way to nurture ourselves through a sense of spaciousness, calm, and connection with the out-of-doors. Nina's work has been featured in The New York Times, O, The Oprah Magazine; Real Simple; Shape; Self; Huffington Post; InStyle; Organic Spa; Spafinder; Family Circle; and Prevention. In our conversation, we discuss: How there are many different ways to meditate, and incorporating a mindfulness practice into your life might be simpler than you thought The components of mindfulness, how the breath can be used as a tool, and how we can get more curious - and less judgmental - about our thoughts What creating more space even means, and how you can use nature to tap into this spaciousness, and have more of a sensory experience The power of nature, the benefits of forest bathing, and how you can reap the benefits even when you might not live in an environment with a lot of nature How to live more simply, learn to let go of things you don't need, and free yourself from distraction  Gratisfied Healthified Online Magazine Instagram: @gratisfied @healthified Empower Bar Baking Mix  NEW Gratisfied Bars! Historically, customers expected categories like hospitality and healthcare to support their wellbeing. Today, categories as wide-ranging as finance and electronics are expected to design for wellbeing.  Don't think you're in the wellbeing industry? Think again. Cultural shifts and crises have changed the game. In this episode, we are joined by Sallie Fraenkel, the founder of Mind Body Spirit Network, and the former CMO & COO of SpaFinder and EVP for the Global Wellness Summit. Together we look at how changing customer expectations influence the perception of your experience and specific ways that you can meaningfully integrate wellbeing for your customers and company.    KEY TAKEAWAYS A decade ago, customers sought pampering from experiences. With time, that has become less differentiating. In fact, it's become a functional job to be done. Now, customers demand a more systemic understanding of their needs. They want companies to deliver products that support their total wellbeing. To meet the wellbeing needs of customers, look at the role you play in their life systems. Understanding those intersections will help you better serve them as you synch, coordinate and align with their lives. Use moments of intention and reflection to understand what your customers value, and where they most need you to support their systems.   GUEST BIO Sallie Fraenkel is the founder of Mind Body Spirit Network which was founded in 2014 to offer consulting services to wellness-oriented businesses and networking events for wellness-oriented individuals.  Sallie's passion for wellness travel and tourism has led her to destination spas and resorts around the world where she has created numerous trips, tours and experiences for wellness industry-insiders and travelers. Between 2004 to 2014, Fraenkel served as CMO & COO of SpaFinder and EVP for the Global Wellness Summit. Her first career was in the entertainment industry where she ran the home entertainment division for Showtime. As a leader in the industry, Fraenkel serves on several boards including the Transformational Travel Council, GSN Planet, NYSPA, One Well World, Well Defined and Vacayou. Fraenkel draws upon the expertise of many professionals with whom she has collaborated during her career. She values creativity, ingenuity, authenticity, integrity, and connection in her work and that of others.

In this episode, Host Helen Lee continues her interview with Mia Kyricos, a globally respected thought leader in the business of wellness and brand strategy with 20+ years of experience cultivating wellness, hospitality, healthy lifestyle and travel brands across 100+ countries. As President and Founder of Kyricos & Associates LLC, a strategic advisory and referral firm, and as the world's first Chief Love Officer, Mia enables senior leaders to activate Ecosystems of Wellbeing™, advancing both brand and business objectives.  Helen and Mia talk about self love leading to the application of love in all environments, scheduling love in your life, Mia's five love lessons, her experience in business, the economy of wellness and thus love, and their shared mission to increase humanity's consciousness to include universal love. You can watch Mia's presentation at the Global Wellness Summit in 2020 on "Love as A Business Strategy" here: https://youtu.be/XclSRbd_XPM Helen will be organising Masterclasses with some of her podcast guests, possibly with follow-on courses as well. She hopes to do so with Mia and will conduct some of her own too. Stay tuned and enjoy Part 2 of this conversation with Mia!  "We all need to love and be loved. And the time has come that we allow ourselves to do so and create communities, a whole new world, that is based on love rather than fear.  And from the powerful position of love, there will be abundance for all - all human beings, all living things, everything in Existence that lives and breathes. And we can begin living this way now, some of us can lead the way and exemplify this more evolved way of being." ~ Helen Lee, Jan 18, 2012 So, kudos to Mia and others adopting love as a business strategy or bringing consciousness to commerce, as Neil Jacobs, CEO of Six Senses: Luxury Hotels, Resorts & Spas does (check out Episode 14 on "Future Of Humanity: Bringing Consciousness to Commerce - with Neil Jacobs).   KEY TAKEAWAYS Mia speaks to the concept of loving oneself to her clients and audiences. The people who are most opposed or critical of love as a business strategy are those with the least amount of love in their lives towards themselves and others. If love exists in someone's life, they would immediately or more easily recognise the worth of applying it into their business life as well. There is very little scheduling of play, joy and growth activities in the business world and these aspects of life are essential, so why not at work? When creating a schedule during tough times, make time for love. Dinners, conversations and play that builds your spirit and wellbeing.  In a Masterclass of Mia's, she advocates 5 Love Lessons. Some companies have already made love part of their business some years ago. The absence of trust makes it impossible for love to grow. You can track and measure the impact of love in your business. Positivity comes in many forms, but love is its greatest and according to Dr Barbara Fredrickson, whom Mia loves, you need to have three positive thoughts for every negative thought. Mia also feels that you can care for people you do not love, but if you genuinely love to care, the impacts are exponential. Mia has held leadership positions for public and private companies, startups and established companies. Her experience is wide and varied in overseeing health and wellness within institutions.  Helen and Mia are united in their determination to increase and expand human consciousness beyond its current limited level. Through different efforts working towards the same goal, wider understanding of the true nature of humanity can be achieved.    BEST MOMENTS ‘My message to the world is that, along with love, comes abundance of all kinds including material abundance, or wealth, and it's not about abundance for some only but about abundance for all, that's for sure.' – Helen  ‘One of the key pillars of wellbeing is really about social connection, joy, happiness and the things that you have in your life.' – Mia  ‘If you do not schedule it it does not become a habit, it does not become who you are. Some people are innately lovely humans, like you are, Helen, but for people who do not feel that or are not tied to themselves you need to look at what their habits are and find a way to plug it in.' – Mia ‘You don't have to love everybody, but if you genuinely enjoy caring for them, that impact of love is still there and it will still blossom.' – Mia ‘The end result is higher consciousness for all of humanity and a totally different world. We need a minimum of ten years to do this.' – Helen  ‘And much like you (Helen) said at the start of this podcast, which is, to legitimise the business of wellness, we need to quantify it and I helped to build organisations that did that. And now we can say that it's a 4.5 trillion dollar global economy, that is three times the size of the pharmaceutical industry.' – Mia   ABOUT THE GUEST MIA KYRICOS Most recently, Mia was SVP & Global Head of Wellbeing at Hyatt, setting a new industry standard as a leader and curator of the company's global wellbeing strategy, spanning commercial health and wellness-related products, services, events and partnerships as well as colleague wellbeing for ~130,000 associates worldwide. Prior to Hyatt, she was Chief Brand Officer of Spafinder Wellness, Inc., where she led the company's brand evolution, positioning Spafinder as an authority for wellness trends, providers and resources. Mia also served as Vice President of EXOS where she oversaw the workplace wellness division operating on the campuses of companies such as Google and Intel. Prior to EXOS, she was Director of Global Spa Brands at Starwood Hotels & Resorts where she led the creation of 6 international spa brands and managed the Starwood Spa Collection - a consortium of 60 wellness travel destinations across 26 countries. Mia has served the boards of the Global Wellness Summit, and University of California Irvine, and sits on the Advisory Boards of Cornell University, Wellness for Cancer, and the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational foundation she helped found.    ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. In this episode Host Helen Lee interviews Mia Kyricos, a globally respected thought leader in the business of wellness and brand strategy with 20+ years of experience cultivating wellness, hospitality, healthy lifestyle and travel brands across 100+ countries. As President and Founder of Kyricos & Associates LLC, a strategic advisory and referral firm, and as the world’s first Chief Love Officer, Mia enables senior leaders to activate Ecosystems of Wellbeing™, advancing both brand and business objectives. Named a Global Leading Woman in Wellness and Cornell University’s Alumna of the Year, Mia has helped to define the global wellness economy, and transform what it means to be well at both work and in life. A celebrated speaker, her work and expertise has also been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, Skift, Smart Money, Hotel Business, Travel Weekly, Real Simple, Market Watch & more. She holds a Master of Management in Hospitality Administration (MMH) from Cornell University, and a BA in International Relations from Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Helen and Mia talk about love in the context of business operations, the impact of global trauma, love over fear and ego, persuading the world to accept love as a practical business strategy and much more for its survival and thriving, how it can benefit our business systems and general wellbeing, and how people like Mia are part of a worldwide change in how we see ourselves and the resulting systems we adopt. Stay tuned and enjoy Part 1 of this conversation with Mia! Part 2 will be out next Monday. "Life is Love itself. Invincible Love is the very essence of Life itself. It is the very essence of who we ALL are. And the most practical and wisest thing to focus on is to be Love itself. Anything else is like chasing our own shadows, which is what humanity has been doing for centuries. Time for true transformation. Now." ~ Helen Lee, 2017 KEY TAKEAWAYS In exercising one of Mia's wellness practices at the beginning of the pandemic, which is to learn something new which gave her hope, she looked into institutionalising love as a business practice, "the greatest form of positivity that there is". She had already studied this for quite some time including its impact on how companies perform and their bottom line. She could prove to herself first that love does pay. There is no better time in history than now, "when the world has really been shaken to its core in many ways" to implement love as a business practice, to take it "from the bedroom into the boardroom", as Mia puts it. Adopting a new strategy with which to run our world is part of the transformation triggered by recent and current global events. The business world is awkward and reluctant to speak about love and spirituality, and yet these aspects of life are the very essence of our humanity, of the souls or spiritual beings that we are. Mia is part of a new wave that gets business talking and accepting love as part of humanity and our lives that needs to be incorporated into its operations and fully optimised. What makes love a strong business strategy is that it is the intersection of your personal life and your professional life. You can apply it as a strategy in both areas of your life and it will have equal positive effects. You can see problems, solutions and opportunities differently to how you did before and the integration of both life strategies into one application of love allows clearer vision and focus of energy. Mia accentuates the different aspects of thought that love encourages in crisis and stress situations. As a leader, sometimes stressed, irritable and anxious, taking pause and approaching a problem with love leading will likely result in clearer communication, thinking and resolution. Mia works on legitimising the case for love in business by pointing to actual real life implementations that have been successful. Business leaders need to be communicated with on their own level, the advantages of wellness needs to be quantified for them to understand and accept the reality. The changes that the world needs as we move forward and learn about ourselves and the nature of our beings will be facilitated by leaders and way showers such as Helen, Mia and other podcast guests and change makers that Helen invites on "Transform and Thrive" and will also invite to conduct Masterclasses and follow-on courses for listeners, followers and clients, as we cast off the old broken systems and habits and adopt new ones embracing empathy, kindness and love as our driving motives. You will be able to find various examples of Helen's approach to coaching people on loving and honouring themselves greatly, by checking out transformandthrive.club And if you like, you can sign up right away and join her powerful monthly live Zoom sessions where she personally coaches you and facilitates shifts for you on this subject and any that you are focusing on and need help with right now in order to transform and thrive. And watch out for the Masterclasses to come, conducted by herself and select podcast guests and change makers. BEST MOMENTS ‘I think that one of the things I heard you say about yourself is that you are an evangelist of making love as a business strategy and I just love the sound of that which is why I’m excited about you being here with me today.’ – Helen ‘Love would regularly come up as one of my leadership strengths. But it's not something I could regularly talk about as something I’m good at, like being good at communications or otherwise.’ – Mia 'We not only have a Soul, we are Soul and the essence of Soul is Love. We're not even tapping into a fraction of who we are and I think it's such a waste.' – Helen ‘It actually does impact how we perform in the workplace in such significant ways that we are only beginning to understand. Leaders and many of them today still, typically for large publicly traded companies, for example, they lead from a place of fear and that’s where ego lives. And love is where acceptance lives.’ – Mia ‘I think we need different leaders. I actually think we need leaders who are empathic and highly sensitive, right? Because they understand the subtle energies and work with them. I think we can co-create a totally different world.’ – Helen ‘I think a lot of times if you think about it we set company goals that are unrealistic, with the understanding that, ok, we are probably not gonna hit that goal but we’ll get close to it. That’s how I look at the difference between love and care and empathy. Love is the hardest goal to go achieve for many people. So, why don't you set the bar high and if you get to care or empathy or compassion or gratitude, you're pretty close.’ – Mia 'People are now willing to open their eyes and ears to almost anything that can help change the unhappy and negative ties in the world.' – Mia 'It's not about a mushy sentimental love at all. It cannot be. Love is a hell of a lot stronger than that and it is a lot more practical than that.' – Helen `We need more people, certainly from stereotypically hard nosed industry like finance, to speak to the softer side of business of which love is the star of the show.’ – Mia 'The evidence is there. It's just that people are fearful and coming from mind rather than heart. And if you come from mind, it is inevitably fear-based, ego-based and we have choices. We have a choice to come from that or to come from heart.' – Helen 'We need people to know that love is the most sensible and practical thing to inculcate in all areas of our lives including our business and corporate world, and that it actually pays us, rewards us, monetarily and in so many intangible and very, very crucial ways as well.' – Helen ABOUT THE GUEST MIA KYRICOS Most recently, Mia was SVP & Global Head of Wellbeing at Hyatt, setting a new industry standard as a leader and curator of the company's global wellbeing strategy, spanning commercial health and wellness-related products, services, events and partnerships as well as colleague wellbeing for ~ 130,000 associates worldwide. Cam, a stay-at-home mom, says her husband of four years, Kyle, is a “slob” who refuses to clean up after himself. Bridget, who works full-time, says she spends 18 hours a day cleaning her home, yet her husband of 16 years, Mike, won't take out the trash or pick up his dirty clothes. And after 39 years together, Debi says her husband, Rick, admits he neglects household chores, but claims it's too late for him to change. Josh explains how the company navigated the pandemic, including layoffs, his transition to CEO, and the launch of virtual experiences. And we talk about the future of fitness, including digital content, the role of fitness professionals, and the return to exercising in person.    More from Josh    Josh McCarter is CEO of Mindbody, the leading technology platform for the fitness, wellness, and beauty industries. Hi Friends! Every year we put together a holiday gift guide to make your shopping a little easier.  Despite 2020 turning the world upside down, we were determined to find some great clutter-free options for you and the family!  Joining me today is SBO Partner, Melynda Weiland. Melynda is the founder of Order to Everything in Austin, TX. Together we scoured the internet to find a variety of gifts that won’t add to the clutter or break the bank!   We broke our gift guide down into 8 categories:  Candles Bath and Body Games Food & Beverage Workout Experiences  Personalized Gifts and my personal favorite, Gifts that Give Back Although many of these items are physical in nature, they made the list because they are something to use, wear or play-without taking up much space. In years past, experiences like concerts, sporting events and theater tickets topped the list, however given our current climate, we opted to bring the fun experiences inside our homes. Every company on our list was hand selected by either Melynda or me. We were not compensated in any way, either with product or monetary to endorse any of these (although we personally use many of them!) I encourage you to listen to the entire episode to see why each of these made the list.(Links to each company are at the bottom of the show notes.)  Quick side note, I did my best to support small online businesses, local retailers, and artisans this year rather than big box stores. As you shop this list, please consider making your purchases from your local toy stores, boutiques, and family owned businesses who are struggling to stay afloat during our economic shut downs. xo - Laurie Connect with Melynda WEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM JOIN THE ORGANIZING LAB Links Mentioned in this Episode By Category Gifts that Give Back: Heifer International: (helping third world farmers build businesses and a sustainable living) Charity Water : (bringing clean drinking water to third world countries) Compassion International: (sponsor a child in need across the world) Candles: Homesick: (state scented candles; home, self-care) Light & Bark Candle Co (formerly the Dog Candle Company) Bath & Body: Dermstore (him, her, self-care) Briogio hair : (woman owned, multi-racial self-care) Carols Daughter:  (Love the butter body balm)  Milk + Honey: (milk bath, body oils, aromatherapy, all organic and great packaging!)
