This episode originally aired on July 17, 2023. Jim Lewis was a decorated veteran who had recently retired after serving in the United States Army for 25 years. Jim and his wife, Patsy, purchased a home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which was intended to be their forever home, after having moved around the US and the world for many years. They were finally putting down their roots, and Patsy was able to start hanging those pictures on the walls. However, it didn't even last a year, as in October 1982, Jim pulled out of the driveway, headed to a job interview in Vero Beach, Florida, and never came home. The police were convinced that Jim had willingly abandoned his family, and they showed no interest in investigating. His family did what they could on their own, but that wasn't bringing them any solid answers. Then, Jim's car was found months later at the local airport in Fayetteville. It had been parked there since October 6, 1982, three days after Jim left, supposedly to drive to Florida. None of it seemed to make sense to his family. He always cared for them and wouldn't have left them this way. Over the years, some clues have been revealed that could point to an outcome no one ever saw coming. If you have any information about the disappearance of James Lewis, please contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Tinley Park, Illinois. On February 2, 2008, a gunman claiming to be a delivery man entered a Lane Bryant store at the Brookside Marketplace. The gunman ordered two employees and four customers to the back of the store, where he bound them with duct tape and murdered five of the women in an execution-style manner. Despite forensic evidence, the killer is unknown, and the case remains open. For bonus episodes and outtakes visit: patreon.com/generationwhyListen ad free with Wondery+. This episode originally aired on July 10, 2023. On October 3, 1982, 42-year-old James Lewis left his home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Jim told his family he planned to drive to Vero Beach, FL, for a job interview. Jim was a decorated veteran who had recently retired from the Army. He was a skilled pilot looking for something to do in the next phase of his life post-retirement. Jim was interviewing for a position ferrying airplanes from a dealer in Florida to buyers. After Jim left, his family never heard from him again, something that was very unusual for Jim. Months later, in January of 1983, Jim's wife received a call from a local airport, stating that his car had been parked there since early October, just days after her husband had vanished. Had Jim actually driven to Florida? Had he taken a flight somewhere? Why was his car at the airport? These questions have haunted his family for more than 40 years.
Episode 106 Christopher Newton 33 year old Christopher Newton had fallen on hard times when his family lost touch with him in late 2023. Chris had battled his way through a schizophrenia diagnosis with the help of medications and had even started his own business and got his own apartment. But his business eventually went under, and Chris began to use drugs and stopped taking his prescribed medications. He found himself living in Canada's unhoused community, sleeping in a tent in the Nelson, BC area of Canada. Chris was briefly incarcerated in September, 2023. While in custody, his camp, tent, and all his belongings, along with the camps of other nearby unhoused people, were taken down and removed by the city of Nelson, and railway officials. When Chris was released on December 11,2023, he went back to his camp to find it no longer there. With no place to go, he began sleeping on nearby streets. On December 23rd, Nelson police told him that he needed to move along. After this, Chris's family, who did not live close to the area lost touch with him and he was reported missing that month. There were unconfirmed sightings in the following months, but also one seemingly reliable sighting in the summer of 2024. Since then, it seems as if Chris has truly vanished and his family is desperate to find him. His mother Christine Moore is our guest in this episode. Christopher Newton is described as a White male standing 5ft10, and weighing 159 pounds. He has Brown hair and eyes, and a skateboard tattoo on his left shoulder. If you have information about Christopher Newton, please call the Nelson Police Department at (250) 354-3919 file # 25-46 Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) You can also send an email to Chris's family at SearchingforChrisNewton@gmail.com Be sure to visit the Facebook page that Chris's family runs. On June 27, 2000, Magi Bish drove her 16-year-old daughter, Molly Bish, to her summer lifeguarding job at Comins Pond in Warren, Massachusetts. Molly, the youngest in a close-knit family with her parents Magi and John, sister Heather, and brother John Jr., had started her new job eight days prior. A bright, athletic, and social teen, Molly had just been to her first prom, was on the honor roll, and played multiple sports. Her parents had relocated to Warren from Detroit, believing it was a safe place to raise a family. The day before Molly vanished, Magi noticed a mustached man in a white sedan staring at Molly in the pond's parking lot. Though he didn’t act overtly threatening, Magi felt uneasy enough to wait until he left. On June 27, she didn’t see him and felt reassured. As Molly got out of the car, she said to he mom, “I love you, Mom.” And that was the last time Magi ever saw her daughter alive. A DNA profile is a unique genetic fingerprint derived from an individual's DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is the fundamental genetic material found in the cells of all living organisms, and it carries the instructions that determine our physical characteristics and biological traits.A DNA profile is created by analyzing specific regions of an individual's DNA known as short tandem repeats (STRs) or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). These regions exhibit variations between individuals, making them useful for identification purposes. DNA profiling involves extracting DNA from a biological sample, such as blood, saliva, hair, or semen, and then amplifying and analyzing the specific DNA regions of interest.Law enforcement agencies use DNA profiling in several ways:Criminal Investigations: When biological evidence is found at a crime scene, such as bloodstains or hair, DNA profiling can be performed to create a DNA profile from the sample. This profile can then be compared to profiles in DNA databases or against known suspects to identify or exclude potential perpetrators.Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains: DNA profiling plays a crucial role in identifying missing persons and unidentified remains. By comparing DNA profiles from unidentified remains to profiles of missing individuals or their relatives, law enforcement can establish familial relationships or make direct identifications.Cold Case Investigations: In cold cases, where the investigation has gone unresolved for an extended period, DNA profiling can be used to reexamine evidence and potentially link it to a known individual or identify new suspects.Forensic Intelligence: DNA profiles obtained from crime scenes can be stored in DNA databases, such as CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), which allows law enforcement agencies to compare profiles from different cases. This can help link previously unrelated crimes and provide leads for investigations. In this episode, we take a look at the new claims by Bryan Kohberger's legal team that 3 other unknown male DNA profiles were found at the crime scene and what it might mean moving forward.(commercial at 8:30)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bryan Kohberger claims DNA from three other men found at scene of Idaho murders | The IndependentBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

It's not that hard to kill a planet. All it takes is a little drilling, some mining, a generous helping of pollution and voila! Earth over. When you take stock of what's left, it starts to look like a crime scene: decapitated mountains, poisoned rivers, oil-soaked pelicans, maybe a sun-bleached cow skull in a dried-up lake bed. The only thing missing is yellow caution tape. On each episode of Lawless Planet, host Zach Goldbaum reveals the scams, murders and cover-ups on the frontline of the climate crisis, and the life and death choices people are making to either protect our world – or destroy it.Listen to Lawless Planet: Wondery.fm/LawlessPlanetSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In September 2023, 45-year-old Eleanore "Ellie" Halverson and her mother, Roxanne, drove to a mental health facility in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was planning to check in for treatment. Outside the entrance, Ellie said goodbye to her mother and daughter, as neither of them were allowed to accompany her inside.Roxanne expected she would hear from her daughter within a few days, once Ellie had settled in and was granted phone privileges. But as time passed with no word, a sense of unease set in. Then she learned that Ellie had never officially checked into the facility, and no one had seen or heard from her. Fearing the worst, Roxanne reported Ellie missing in Grand Rapids. Then, on November 4, Ellie was spotted on surveillance footage in Northhome, MN. Ellie's family believed she was likely with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Geno. Police eventually tracked Geno down in rural Itasca County. He told investigators they had argued one night in early November, and Ellie had stormed off into the freezing Minnesota darkness. Last week, you learned about Jonathan Hoang, his quiet and structured life, and how he disappeared from his family's home in Arlington, Washington, at the end of March 2025. On the evening of March 30, Jonathan asked to sleep in the downstairs guest bedroom because the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. In hindsight, a few details from that conversation were slightly unusual, but nothing raised alarm. By the next morning, everything had changed. His mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone. His iPad and headphones were missing, but his phone and jacket, which he never left home without, were still in the house.Search teams combed the neighborhood and nearby areas. Surveillance footage was gathered from neighbors, but Jonathan was not visible on any of the cameras. No one reported seeing him, and no physical trace of Jonathan was ever found. As time passed, his family began to believe he was not just lost, but that someone may have taken him.Since Jonathan has autism and is considered an endangered missing person, his family expected law enforcement to treat the case with urgency. Instead, they encountered one obstacle after another. They continued searching, but much of the work fell on them and members of the community who offered support without having access to the tools or authority that law enforcement holds. At the center of all this is a disconnect. Jonathan's family is certain he could not have simply walked away and started a new life. He needed daily support and structure. Yet from their perspective, law enforcement seems to have built a narrative that he did exactly that. This week, we will examine what happened after the initial searches ended, the investigation, the community response, and a recent development that has brought new hope, possible sightings of Jonathan in Kirkland, Washington. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang - Endangered & Missing Person.A $100,000 reward is currently available for information. Christina or Christine Bracken was a 39 year old nun, originally from Ireland, who in the later part of 1978 moved to Swansea, Wales, to begin a new chapter in her life. After 6 months in Wales Christina, who went by her religious name Sister Jacinta, appeared to have settled in well and seemed happy. Shortly after lunch on Saturday May 19th 1979 Sister Jacinta took a walk into the city centre to buy a birthday present for her mother. While there were a few sightings of Sister Jacinta that day (both confirmed and unconfirmed), she was never seen by anyone at the convent again and seemingly vanished into thin air. There are numerous theories and rumours about what happened to Sister Jacinta, including a startling piece of information that surfaced just a decade ago.Sources for the episode can be found hereSupport the showFollow Persons Unknown: Instagram and FacebookEmail: personsunknownpod@gmail.comWebsite with Transcripts:https://personsunknown.buzzsprout.com/

Episode 105 Deanna Merryfield On the night of July 21, 1990, thirteen year old Deanna Merryfield spent much of the night watching movies with her grandmother in Killeen, Texas. After her grandmother went to bed, Deanna snuck out of the house, and at 3:30am, went to see her sister Rebecca who lived with their uncle nearby. Deanna knocked on Rebecca's window and the sisters briefly talked before their uncle woke up and told Deanna that she needed to leave. Deanna had been driven to the house by two men in a Brown or Bronze four door car that Rebecca did not recognize. Deanna left with the two men who were thought to be either Caucasian or Hispanic, and after that, she vanished. Hours later, Deanna's grandmother realized that she was missing and reported her missing, but because she was suspected to be a run away by police, there was no investigation started. In 1992, Rebecca reportedly received a collect phone call from someone who told the operator that her name was Deanna, but when Rebecca accepted the call, the caller had hung up. The call was traced to Kentucky, where Deanna had family, but none of her relatives there reported seeing Deanna. During the 2000-2002 time period, there was an unconfirmed sighting of Deanna by a relative of hers who claimed to have encountered her, and that Deanna at the time of the sighting had several tattoos. The information provided by this family member may not be credible. At another point over the years, someone contacted police and told them that Deanna had returned home safely. As a result, her case was closed. It was only realized later that the call was to police was inaccurate, and Deanna was still missing, at which point her case was re-opened. Deanna remains missing to this day. In this episode, Deanna's sister Melissa is our guest. At the time of her disappearance, Deanna was described as a White female standing between 5ft and 5ft5, and weighing 108-120 pounds. She had Blonde hair and Hazel eyes. She had a small scar on her upper lip. Deanna if alive today, may or may not have tattoos; including the name “Merryfield” with an unknown date on her neck, a cross with lines on her ankle and a yellow rose with “Texas Born” on her back. There is a DNA sample on file for needed comparisons as per Deanna's NAMUS page Investigators are interested in identifying and speaking to the two young men Deanna was last seen with. At the time of Deanna's disappearance, the men, possibly brothers, were thought to be White or Hispanic, and their names may be Tony and Rudy Longoria. Police were also seeking a Sylvia Martinez for questioning. If you have any information or tips in Deanna's case, please contact the Killeen Police Department at 254-501-8830 or submit a tip on Bell County Crime Stoppers. Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan Hoang disappeared from his home in Arlington, Washington, sometime between the evening of Sunday, March 30, and the early morning hours of Monday, March 31, 2025.On the night of March 30, Jonathan asked his father if he could sleep in the downstairs guest room, saying the sound of the treadmill was bothering him. A short while later, he returned to say he wasn't feeling well and asked to stay home from school the next day. His father suggested waiting to see how he felt in the morning. Around 8 PM, Jonathan told his dad he was heading to bed downstairs. It was a small deviation from routine that was odd, but not alarming. The next morning, Jonathan's mother went to wake him for school and found that Jonathan was gone.Jonathan is on the autism spectrum and lived a quiet, structured life. He spent most of his time at home with his family or at school, where he was enrolled in a transitional program for young adults designed to help them build independent living skills and prepare for work.Jonathan was a creature of habit, and his routines brought him comfort. One of those routines was walking the same path through the neighborhood, always wearing the same jacket with a hood, even on the hottest days. That jacket became a part of how neighbors recognized him. But on the morning his mother discovered he was missing, the jacket was still inside the house. The items missing along with him were his iPad and earbuds. He left behind his phone, his beloved jacket, and every indication of routine. His family called the police immediately. Search and rescue teams canvassed the area, and neighbors helped in the effort. Despite extensive early searches, no sign of Jonathan was ever found. Months have passed since Jonathan disappeared, and his family continues to search and to fight for answers. You can follow the family's search efforts on social media at Help Us Find Jonathan Hoang – Endangered & Missing Person on Facebook. There is currently a $100,000 reward for information. Ruth Egnoski's story was difficult to piece together. Between fragmented newspaper archives and fading memories, there were gaps we feared might never be filled. We couldn't even determine what year Ruth had disappeared. We had submitted records requests to the Delavan Police Department, but at the time we produced the episode, we had received no response. Given the uncertainty and the reality that some departments never respond, despite open records laws requiring them to do so, we decided to move forward with the story. Then, less than a month after the episode aired, we were stunned to receive a large police file from the Delavan Police Department. The documents inside answered many of the lingering questions we'd had just weeks earlier, and what we found was shocking. If you have any information about the disappearance of Ruth Egnoski, please contact the Delavan Police Department at 262-728-6311.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Sometime between the summer of 1964 and 1966, a young woman named Ruth Egnoski vanished from Delavan, Wisconsin. The exact year is unclear, but she would have been between 18 and 20 years old at the time. Her family says they reported her missing to local police, but no search was ever conducted. A private investigator later claimed Ruth had boarded a bus to Chicago. Then, strange clues began to surface. In the 1970s, Ruth's Social Security card mysteriously appeared in the office of a local school custodian. In the 1980s, luggage was found hidden in the ceiling of the same custodian's office, and that custodian just so happened to be Ruth's stepfather.Could these discoveries point to a chilling connection? The case heated up briefly but eventually cooled off again. Today, Ruth Egnoski's disappearance remains unsolved. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Ruth Egnoski, please call the Delavan Police Department at 262-728-6311.If you have a missing loved one that you would like to have featured on the show, please fill out our case submission form.Follow The Vanished on social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterPatreonSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Josh Mankiewicz catches up with Dateline producer Shane Bishop about their classic episode, “Cape Fear.” Young mother Allison Jackson Foy went missing after leaving a Wilmington, North Carolina bar in 2006. Two years later, a man walking in the woods three miles from that bar, found her remains. Just 10 feet away, another set of remains was found—another missing woman, later identified as Angela Rothen. Both women had been murdered. Both murders remain unsolved. Josh and Shane discuss the “Unsolved Case Squad” used in this episode—which included Karen Read's defense attorney Alan Jackson. They share behind the scenes details from Josh's interview with the man Allison's family believes was responsible for her murder—something he denies. Plus, Josh shares an excerpt from his recent interview with Allison's sister, Lisa Valentino, who today volunteers with the CUE Center for Missing Persons. “Lost Lane,” one of the cases she is working on, is featured in Season 4 of Josh's Dateline: Missing in America podcast. If you have a question for Talking Dateline, send us an audio message on social @datelinenbc or leave us a voicemail at 212-413-5252.
