Community kitchen closes, but free meals continue After the Beacon Community Kitchen closed last month, volunteers launched two free meal programs to feed residents who might go without. A week ago, on Jan. 31, more than 100 people were fed at the inaugural weekly dinner at the First Presbyterian Church provided by volunteers from Fareground, an anti-hunger nonprofit founded in 2012. Two weeks ago, a newly created nonprofit, Beacon's Backyard, began serving breakfasts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at The Yard. Both projects were in the early planning stages before the closing of the Beacon Community Kitchen, which had been serving weekday lunches at Tabernacle of Christ Church since 2015 under the direction of Candi Rivera and other volunteers. About the same time Beacon Community Kitchen closed, a meal program at First Presbyterian Church also stopped. In both cases, longtime coordinators retired or relocated. "This wasn't the original plan," said Justice McCray, a former Beacon City Council member who helped organize Beacon's Backyard in December with plans for spring programming. "We pivoted." Jamie Levato, the executive director at Fareground, said the sudden change feels like "a generational shift." Fareground's Welcome Table and Beacon's Backyard Kitchen are carrying on a local tradition of feeding the hungry at a moment's notice. It took Beacon Community Kitchen less than a week to go from conception to opening in 2015 when the Salvation Army's kitchen closed unexpectedly. In March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, Beacon Mutual Aid was operating within 24 hours. Volunteers were never in short supply. "We have a lot of people who are ready and willing to step up," said McCray. "They're just waiting for the Bat-Signal." Special Reports Hunger in the Highlands (2021) Hunger in the Highlands Update (2024) The Fareground dinner began after a volunteer who also helped at First Presbyterian noted the church has a commercial kitchen. "It was perfect timing because that's what we needed to make it happen," said Levato. (Fareground moved into a space just outside Beacon last year that has a commercial kitchen, but it needs major upgrades.) The First Presbyterian kitchen needed a few minor fixes to pass inspection by the county health department, so Meyer's Olde Dutch Beacon donated pasta, meatballs, salad and bread for the Jan. 31 meal. Diners lingered and caught up with friends while music played and children colored. The welcoming atmosphere is as integral to the program as the food, Levato said. "We want people to have access to fresh, healthy food because food is a human right," she said. "We also want people to engage with each other. There's a lot of issues that arise from people feeling lonely and a lack of connection. "If you see somebody once a week, you can notice that something might be wrong. Maybe they need a ride to the doctor, or maybe they have some amazing news that they want to share with someone. If you can have those connections, you can build a network of support and community care." "It's mutual aid," said Jason Hughes, a volunteer with Beacon's Backyard Kitchen, on Tuesday (Feb. 4) before breakfast was served at The Yard. "We're not feeding them - we're feeding us." Altrude Lewis Thorpe Beatrice Clay Brian Arnoff Chef Zeke Jeff Silverstein Rhys Bethke The Yard has a commercial kitchen inside a trailer. Professional chefs and enthusiastic amateurs spent the early morning preparing shakshuka, potato hash, bacon, toast and fruit salad, while volunteers laid out muffins and cereal. As the dining room filled, the kitchen staff made and packaged a dozen sandwiches to hand out for lunch. McCray said Beacon's Backyard Kitchen decided to serve breakfast because many working people couldn't attend the Beacon Community Kitchen lunches. "With a dine-in and takeout option, people don't have to go to work hungry," McCray said. "We know there's been a lot of success with the Beacon schools' ...

The Yard to host festival of live music, art and weed This past November, singer Julia Zivic, who works at The Yard in Beacon; Brianne McDowell, its general manager, and Jason Hughes, its owner, hosted First Frost, which featured music, ink (tattoos) and art-making in a communal hangout full of good cheer amid bonfire warmth. At the event, Noah Mandia mentioned to Zivic that his Beacon heavy metal band, Low Fiction, wanted to perform at The Yard. She passed the request to Hughes, and "it turns out Jason loves metal, which I hadn't known." That led to a brainstorming session, which led to Heavy Metal Blaze: A Night of Cannabis, Music and Art, scheduled for Jan. 27. "We're always trying to find ways to connect with the community," says Zivic. "Beacon lacks a great music venue, and there are many bands that have no space" to perform. Heavy Metal Blaze began as a concert but "we thought a lot of metalheads in Beacon classify themselves as 'stoner metal' and realized it would be fun to fuse the two - metal and cannabis," Zivic says. "This night is about bringing together the cannabis community, the heavy-metal community and the music community in general. We want to attract people who are curious; there's an art show, snacks, weed, a bonfire. We want to showcase how we can all come together." The alcohol-free festivities will begin at 4 p.m., rain or shine, when VIP ticket holders are welcome to collect a package that includes a joint, a THC-infused canned cocktail and a chillum glass pipe, "pre-packed to provide a couple of hits," Zivic says. The packages will be assembled by Flower Hour, a group of "weed curators interested in normalizing mindful consumption," she says. General admission begins at 5:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be offered for sale at indoor tents, and vintage Nintendo and Sega Genesis games will be available for free play. Throughout, Sean Donovan will demonstrate and create art and signs. At 6 p.m., Purple Lung, a "stonerdoom" metal band from Pennsylvania, will take the stage. It will be followed at 7 p.m. by Low Fiction - Mandia on guitar, Jack Kolodziejksi on vocals and guitar, Bryan Caprari on bass and John Scelzo on drums - and at 8 p.m. by Shadow Witch from Kingston. The Yard is located at 4 Hanna Lane in Beacon. General admission tickets are $35 and VIP tickets are $60 at bit.ly/hmb-2024. No one under age 21 will be admitted, and no smoking will be allowed indoors.

This week, we explain the 101 Ash Street saga from the beginning and why it matters. ***** In January, VOSD's Lisa Halverstadt wrote a long piece on the role Jason Hughes, a commercial real estate broker, had in the mess the city has faced related to 101 Ash St., the building it was never able to move employees into. Hughes had been an unpaid volunteer advising mayors going back to Bob Filner and helping the city renegotiate leases. But he also helped the city lease two large towers, 101 Ash St. and Civic Center Plaza. This week, we learned Hughes had, at some point, stopped being a volunteer and had instead gotten one of the most lucrative commercial real estate gigs in the city: representing the city itself. He revealed it himself. The company that bought the two buildings so that the city could lease them from it paid him $9.4 million. He revealed it because the city attorney was about to make public the results of its subpoenas and new lawsuits meant to unravel the two deals based on the theory that Hughes had violated state conflict-of-interest laws and thus the lease-to-own arrangements were void. It's all very complex. We have two important pieces on it: Why what then-Mayor Kevin Faulconer knew matters and how we wouldn't know any of this without asbestos. And now, we now have this podcast. In this episode, Mary "Mare" Cunningham shares her career journey from being a graphic design intern for the Minneapolis Police Department to being an analyst for the department, to an operation support technician for the FBI, to being an analyst for the Maple Grove Police Department, and finally to an operation specialist back at the FBI. Mare shares two badge stories in this episode: one about how license plate readers (LPR) helped solve a homicide and how open source resources helped solve an armed robbery and assault case. Mare advocates for intelligence sharing and collaboration across multiple agencies, and how beneficial it was to work for a task force such as the FBI Safe Streets Task Force. In another jam-packed episode, Mare also elaborates on her experience as an administrative analyst and investigative analyst, training she recommends, as well as the importance of law enforcement presence in the community such as National Night Out events. By Ahmed Ibrahim Security is integral to our psychological well being. So when it relates to an invention that can change our lives and minds it should be considered with the utmost care and attention. Elon Musk revealed that his company “Neuralink” purses human trials for its brain-machine interface to help people with “a wide range of clinical disorders”, such as those who have been paralyzed, by allowing them to interact with a computer using their minds via a brain implant. It is currently tested in pigs and the aim is to make the brain-computer link device supercharge human communication, he said in an interview with The New York Times. This chip would replace a piece of the skull without causing any lasting damage to the brain. “It is about the size of a coin and can replace a piece of the skull. It’s kind of like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires”, Elon Musk stated in a live event held by his neurotechnology startup Neuralink. According to Musk, the project is still at a very, very primitive stage before it gets FDA approval, as it will require an intense examination to make sure it doesn’t have any adverse effects and is removable. Expected price and mechanics of the chip ”At first it’s going to be quite expensive but that will rapidly drop,” Musk said. “I think we want to get the price down to a few thousand dollars”. To understand it easily, we should know that Brain-machine interfaces use electrodes to translate neuronal information into commands capable of controlling external systems such as a computer or robotic arm. This is a good part of the story. The bad part of the story is that musk hopes to read and write thoughts and memories, enable telepathic communication, and ultimately merge human and artificial intelligence. According to Neuralink’s president, Max Hodak: “This brain’s chip will be controlled by an iPhone app that uses Bluetooth to connect”. This means that there is an ability to be hacked and controlled by other people like what happened with Tesla cars. The Big Tesla Hack In 2017 a hacker called Jason Hughes managed to exploit vulnerabilities in Tesla’s servers to gain access and control over its cars, he shared the data on the Tesla Motors Club forum, and the company wasn’t happy about it. To end this situation the head of the Supercharger network and the head of software security at Tesla made a conference call with him. They explained to him that they prefer not to share the data, which was technically accessible through the vehicles. Hughes then agreed to stop scraping and sharing the Supercharger data. So we can imagine what will happen if any hacker has the ability to control AI chips and broadcast evil ideas and maybe criminal, suicidal thoughts. The experiment shows that there is no fully secured system so, take care if you will use AI chips and don’t walk after the flock. About the author Ahmed Ibrahim, is an Egyptian creative writer. Jason Hughes played Welsh Warren in the 90s cult drama This Life. The series was based around 20 something lawyers living in South London. Warren also happened to be gay. Gay characters as complex as Warren had never really existed on tv while Welsh voices in mainstream UK telly were rare too. So being gay and Welsh presented different challenges for both the character and the actor as Jason explains in this interview with MIM's Ashley Byrne. The Distinct Nostalgia theme is owned by MIM Productions and composed by Rebecca Applin and Chris Warner. An important lesson for all of us to hear and practice. We chat about the global health crisis we are all in and what the future may bring. Topics discussed  Mixed science on wearing masks Corruption & Censorship in Science & Medicine Authoritarianism vs. Autonomy Global Immune Health Problems as root cause Moving forward and the ripple effects of the pandemic   Dr. Jason Hughes is a naturopathic physician who is truly passionate about helping people like you achieve greater health. Knowing that the word “doctor” means “teacher”, he strives to teach people how they can be well in body & mind. Being interested in how one can reach their potential led Dr. Hughes to create his own undergraduate degree. The program was entitled “bachelor degree with independent concentration” from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Hughes titled his particular degree “Psycho-Physiology” which reflected his study of Biology, Physiology, Exercise Science and Psychology. In truth the main motivation was to get a theoretical foundation of the sciences that affected one's performance potential. Dr. Hughes knew that this degree was only the beginning of his knowledge quest and briefly considered becoming a Medical Doctor but decided against it because he didn't see many Medical Doctors helping people reach potential with their health. Rather he saw most MD's as getting people to a place where they just did not have symptoms anymore. When he stumbled upon the field of Naturopathic Medicine, he saw it as a system of medicine that could help people reach their potential and realized his calling. Dr. Hughes completed his medical training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine , where he won several awards including being recognized for his clinical skills. He also completed a postgraduate residency at the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in general family practice. Upon completion of this residency, Dr Hughes was asked to remain on staff as a clinical supervisor and teacher to future naturopathic doctors. Dr Hughes takes great joy in being able to express the intricate concepts associated with medicine in ways that students and patients can understand and embrace. Being from Arizona, we have not had much exposure to fiberglass pools and we wanted to know more about them, so we took a trip to Warsaw, Virginia to learn from the best. Our friends at River Pools were kind enough to open their doors and share their knowledge on the subject. We got to tour the facility, roll fiberglass, and even see a fiberglass pool being installed “The River Pools Way.” Being around their team for a few days was a breath of fresh air. They are the true definition of a family and we saw that throughout every department.  We have heard many different opinions about fiberglass pools throughout the years, so we wanted to find out the truth from the people that are experts at them. In this episode we dive deep into all things fiberglass pools as we get answers from Jason, Aaron, and Cristian. Like always, we encourage you to listen and form your own opinions on the subject matter. River Pools does things the right way and we are proud to call them our friends and to share their story.  You can register for your Pool Chasers Live Tour tickets below: Website: http://bit.ly/LiveTourPWU You can find River Pools below: Website: http://bit.ly/RiverPoolsPWU Instagram: http://bit.ly/RiverPoolsIGPWU Facebook: http://bit.ly/RiverPoolsFBPWU YouTube: http://bit.ly/RiverPoolsYouTubePWU Learning Center: http://bit.ly/RPLearningCenterPWU You can find the books and podcasts discussed below: Good to Great: http://bit.ly/GoodToGreatPWU 21 Laws of Leadership: http://bit.ly/21LawsPWU Steve Jobs Autobiography: http://bit.ly/SteveJobsPWU 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: http://bit.ly/7HabitsPWU Traction: http://bit.ly/TractionPWU This American Life: http://bit.ly/ThisAmericanLifePWU  You can follow Pool Chasers below:   Website: http://bit.ly/PCWebsitePWU  Instagram: http://bit.ly/PCInstagramPWU  Facebook: http://bit.ly/PCFacebookPWU  Facebook Group: http://bit.ly/PCFacebookGroupPWU  Twitter: http://bit.ly/PCTwitterPWU  YouTube: http://bit.ly/PCYouTubePWU  Patreon: http://bit.ly/PCPatreonPWU  Supporters: We want to thank Pentair for supporting the show. When a band takes their name from an 80's teen comedy, they are the perfect guest for our show all about movies! Jason Hughes, lead male vocals for Baltimore based The Real Geniuses joins us to talk about his band and also a fine list of favorite films featuring comedy classics like CADDYSHACK (1980), DUMB AND DUMBER (1994) and DAZED AND CONFUSED (1983) as well as the "soon to be regarded as a classic" HOT ROD (2007). We also grill Jason on his knowledge of 1980's Movie Soundtracks, share our mutual love for a certain movie about an illegal cross country race and lots more fun in this episode - best played with the volume cranked up to 11.Help us out by giving us a rating in iTunes or better yet leave us a review!
