Jam Notes: Our yearly gig for the Duke Orthopaedic department holiday party. This is the best set list and the best put-together we have been, musically, in all the years we have been doing it. We really got organized on the set list and on the arrangements this year. Everybody played really well and there were really only one or two major mistakes. As usual, Ben had issues with his Zoom H4n batteries and so we only got part of the first set and started recording partway through the second set as well. Some of the songs are also partial recordings because the Zoom H4n ran out of batteries. Jam Notes: " "

Tritones at Dana Thalheimer's House. Still working out the kinks of the recording process. Lots of trouble getting the trombone in a volume range that is both loud enough to here and also does not overdrive the equipment. Also these are just the roughest of mixes as a reminder. Anything that we decide is worth keeping musically, we can redo the mixing to make it sound much higher quality. Some cool stuff in this session. In particular, we have the arrangement with counterpoint for Heres that Rainy Day by Dr. Zimmerman. We also had the neat idea of taking You Dont Know as a rubato intro with just sax and piano.

#185 [Primeira boa notícia, Boia agora é oferecimento da South to South (https://www.southtosouth.com.br/), desde 1988 mantendo as sobrancelhas salgadas.] --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/boia/message
Welcome to Sounds Like Radio Volume 121 where we find the Jolly Boys going into action to save a fellow Jolly Boy from getting fired. In this Great Gildersleeve episode from December 13, 1951 the town's filled with gossip that someone's getting fired. It will be a sticky situation with the solution they figure to save the job. Another good Willard Waterman episode from his first year as Gildy. Willard and the show's writing and characters just improve as the show goes along. You'll hear how it happens as we move along through the 1950's with the Great Gildersleeve. And as always Your Humble Host is here to help as we suggest ways to help out the Jolly Boys. Along for the ride are Doris Day, Boots Randolph, Dinah Shore, Bing Crosby & Al Jolson and a quick duet from them, Jo Stafford, Bill Frawley (Fred Mertz of I Love Lucy) returns to sing a nice one, and Chet Baker sings all about how the Jolly Boys think about their buddy. It's a show filled with neat music and a neat episode of the Great Gildersleeve. P.S. Just to correct a mistake in today's show, it was Ethan Hawke that starred as Chet Baker in the movie "Born To Be Blue."
Tritones at Duke Karsh Alumni Center. Due to COVID, **very** few people came out on this chilly winter evening. The Karsh Alumni Center was setup like a gambling hall or casino. There was also outdoor patio dining and stand up tables where people could drink and talk. Most people spent their time outside talking and did not either gamble or listen to the music. We did have one couple who swing danced to our music for two or three songs though, so that made the whole thing worth it.
Tritones at Dana Thalheimer's House. This was one of our last two rehearsals for the prep for the 2021 version of the one gig that this band has. We were out for quite a long time due to COVID, but we got back together in the fall of 2021 and started putting together our setlist again and remembering how to play our instruments. We had quite a long setlist this time and really got our act together regarding beginnings and endings. Many arrangements were provided and custom charts were written. This was with the Zoom H4n and I am impressed how good the recording quality came out. Danas basement has a great room to record in actually.

Everybody, hands up! This is a podcast! We have a new release this week, one that finally made its way to Boston: STOCKHOLM! Directed by the same filmmaker who turned Ethan into Chet Baker for BORN TO BE BLUE, STOCKHOLM is the story of the 1973 bank hostage crisis from which the term "Stockholm syndrome" was born! It's a good movie with a wonderfully cracked-out Ethan performance. Go see it! And keep Hawke-ing the skies!
Baby, we hear the blues a-callin'! Friend of the podcast Elizabeth Hopkins returns to help us break down Ethan's Chet Baker biopic, BORN TO BE BLUE! We talk about jazz, black and white fantasies, mariachi bands, and Ethan's relationship to music. Keep Hawke-ing the skies! And follow us on Twitter.
Transplanted from the east coast, this destined-to-be-a-Californian had her apprenticeship in New England where she learned from such places as the Berklee College of Music, the Boston scene, and even the public library. An accomplished singer and songwriter: her repertoire also includes the saxophone, bassoon, clarinet, and guitar. She draws inspiration from nature, and specifically the ocean where she can often be seen surfing. She always writes outdoors. Always! This woman made her way to California (yay us!), set up by the ocean in Encinitas, and was quickly nominated for Best Singer-Songwriter at the 2017 San Diego Music Awards. Her joyful and spunky performance on stage combined with her old soul highlights her signature dance between dark and light. Join us as host Laura Jane explores the music of the talented Sarah Rogo. Also discussed: Born To Be Blue (2015), Room (2015), BASEketball (1998). Nic, Tys and Videotape HQ we're returning to our regularly scheduled programming (that is until we start our Christmas Countdown episodes!!). And to return us to the land of the living, we're looking at one of the all-time feel good romantic drama/comedies, JERRY MAGUIRE!! Aside from the fact that we finally get to hear THAT Springsteen song in context, we also explore the star-power of Tom Cruise, the extremely odd career of Cuba Gooding Jr, and the power of great cinematic lines of dialogue. There's also some funny stuff too maybe... I mean what do you want from us?... AND TOM CRUISE RUNNING! It's back baby. ALSO! We respond to a listener request and discover a gem of a trailer in Talkin' Trailers, Tys basically lets Nic take over while he complains about moving house in What Did You Watch This Week?, and again by some strange coincidence we do some clever counter-programming in Crossing The Streams! As always here are the ways to get in touch with us if you would like to suggest a film for us to talk about, or to ask a question to be featured in our MAILBAG segment: Facebook - www.facebook.com/nictysvideotape Twitter - @nictysvideotape Email - nictysandvideotape@gmail.com and don't forget to RATE/REVIEW us on iTunes so we can get the word out and keep building this ace community of movie lovers all over the world!!! You can also subscribe to Nic, Tys and Videotape on YouTube by visiting the following link (if you're into that kind of thing): NOW UPDATED WEEKLY!! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaus3hn3D8WfTxeOC_07zZA Thanks as always to Jac D for our artwork and Zac for our rockin' theme music. NEXT WEEK!!! Nic and Tys love musicals. Tys is about to perform in a musical. It's a cheap plug, no doubt, but there's no better time to discuss this film, on the day that Tys steps on stage to perform the lead role. It's 2005's RENT, and if you want to hear two people complain about bad film adaptations of beloved stage musicals, we've definitely got you covered on this one. Don't miss it!
Steve has long been creating striking images with his cinematography in such films as Flower & Garnet, Seven Times Lucky, and The Dark Hours. Steve worked on iconic Canadian Director Bruce McDonald's film, The Tracey Fragments, pushing the boundaries of cinema, as well as and the award winning debut from Charles Officer, Nurse.Fighter.Boy. Steve's work on the Canadian TV series, Durham County, earned him one of several Gemini nominations in his career. Some of Steve's other credits include the UK-Canada co-production, Snow Cake, re-teaming with Bruce McDonald for the documentary Music from the Big House, and the film Citizen Gangster. Additionally, Steve shot the drama Sitting on the Edge of Marlene, Preggoland and the television series Cardinal. More recently, Steve worked on Born to Be Blue, a re-imagining of jazz legend Chet Baker's musical comeback in the late '60s and Mean Dreams, a coming-of-age fable/thriller which had debuted at the Cannes.
Best known in cinephile circles for his collaborations with director Richard Linklater in the Before trilogy and BOYHOOD, Ethan Hawke is also no stranger to the Toronto International Film Festival as a writer, director, and actor. His latest directorial effort, SEYMOUR: AN INTRODUCTION, played at TIFF ’15, while he also personified the late jazz trumpeter Chet Baker that year in BORN TO BE BLUE. In 2016, he returned to the Festival for dual appearances in THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and MAUDIE. This year at TIFF, the Hawke appears in Paul Schrader’s terse religious drama FIRST REFORMED, playing an ex–military chaplain grieving the death of his son. TIFF UN/CUT has unearthed a career-spanning conversation from 2014 in which the sensitive and soul-searching multi-hyphenate was joined by Jesse Wente, Director of Film Programmes at TIFF Bell Lightbox. Listen as Ethan Hawke tells you the story of his life as an actor, director, screenwriter, novelist, and — first and foremost — film lover.
In "Born to be blue", der am 8. Juni in den deutschen Kinos startet, spielt Ethan Hawke den zerbrechlichen Musiker.
Writer/director Robert Budreau discusses the history and making of his Chet Baker biopic Born to Be Blue, writing the film's female characters, and working with Ethan Hawke.

First up on this new episode of the Wages of Cinema Jack and Andrew discuss the brief but (thank goodness) aborted plan by AMC to allow texting in theaters; a brief talk about The Magnificent Seven (remake) trailer and Westerns in popular culture; and then at 26 minutes in, Jack talks about some movies he watched in the past couple of weeks. What sort of movies? The range goes from a (sadly late) pop icon to Disney once again going into their collection for a new franchise, a lost piece existentialist despair, and a documentary on cine-maniacs. (Jack's movies): 1) DISNEY'S THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016) 2) PURPLE RAIN (1984) 3) ELVIS & NIXON (2016) 4) THE STRANGER (1967) 5) BORN TO BE BLUE (2016) 6) CINEMANIA (2002) wagesofcinema@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/wagesofcinema https://www.twitter.com/wagesofcinema (Music feautring Duke Ellington via Public Domain; Prince and Christopher Walken used under fair use for analysis purposes)
The film starts with Baker playing himself in a film that was planned, but never actually made, about his own life. Born to be Blue utilizes this film-in-a-film approach to draw out the glamorized, black-and-white version of Chet Baker with the so-called reality of the situation, even with the very unsavory issue of his womanizing and his own addiction to heroin. Also included is the love affair he would have with a struggling but ambitious actress named Jane, who is a composite fictional character, played by Carmen Ejogo, who also plays Baker's wife in the fictional film. He's out of prison, but still under the close supervision of his probation officer, who wants him to get a clean and steady job and get out of the lifestyle that has too many temptations for him at the ready, knowing that the methadone he is prescribed to kick the habit will only get him so far.
With the release of the jazz biopic Born To Be Blue (starring Ethan Hawke), the life and music of legendary jazz trumpeter Chet Baker is back in the spotlight, nearly three decades after his death. Was Baker murdered in 1988? Artt Frank, his drummer and longtime friend says that Baker's death was not accidental (as reported by authorities). He shares in this chilling interview how Baker told him the day before he died that he was in danger and being followed, and that Chet's widow, Carol, believes he was murdered. Frank discusses Baker's timeless musical style, his battle with drugs, family life, his comeback, selfless generosity, and mysterious death in Amsterdam on Friday May the 13th 1988.

Vocalist Ed Reed's new CD is Born To Be Blue (2011). Reed, now 83, has lived the kind of life about which movies are made. This interview charts the story of his life: his childhood in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, where a young Charles Mingus was a frequent neighborhood visitor and the big bands were a constant source of entertainment; his time in the military, where he was introduced to drugs; his years in San Quentin and Folsom prisons, where he played in the prison bands with the likes of Art Pepper; his eventual rehabilitation after many attempts; and his turn to performing and recording in his 70s.
