Let's visit the Louvre with author Elaine Sciolino. Today, we chat about her upcoming book Adventures in the Louvre: How to Fall in Love with the World's Greatest Museum. The book pulls back the curtain on a building many think they know, but which still contains endless secrets and untold stories. And if you think you recognise Elaine's name and voice, perhaps you heard her on the pod before! Elaine, the former Paris bureau chief for The New York Times, has featured The Earful Tower in the past discussing her books about the Seine River and the Rue des Martyrs. In fact, she was the second-ever guest on the show, back in 2017. Elaine used her extensive experience as a reporter to influence how she wrote this book. She decided the best approach was to explain the Louvre museum “through the prism of someone who's not an art historian and who's not a tour guide. I decided to just report the Louvre and talk to everybody that I possibly could.” And, my goodness, the surprises Elaine uncovered will knock your socks off: spending the day with the museum's permanent on-site fire fighters, a secret World War Two bunker and long-forgotten graffiti inscribed by the builders of the Philippe Auguste wall. For Louvre novices who are in danger of having an exhausting and frustrating experience trying to see and do everything, Elaine offers this advice “Find your Louvre identity, find what kind of a visitor you are… And once you decide that it makes it a lot easier, because you forgive yourself for not being perfect…You go each time with a different identity, like you go each time and discover a different work of art.” Elaine confesses that she wasn't always the biggest fan of the museum, “the Louvre is a challenge, it's too big…it's too crowded, it's an impossible museum. You have to find your way in. So that's what I tried to do.” Having visited the building hundreds of times in the course of writing the book, I wondered if Elaine was all Louvre-d out or did she intend to go back? “Oh no, I have to go back. I have to keep going back.” Adventures in the Louvre: How to Fall in Love with the World's Greatest Museum is released on 1 April 2025. You can pre-order it here. A fun extra the end of the episode, Bertrand d'Aleman from My Private Paris tells us about a current exhibition at the museum: The Louvre Couture. This is an exploration of how the vast breadth of decorative art contained within the walls of the museum has informed the world of high fashion. The Louvre Couture exhibition runs from 24 January - 21 July. Book your tickets here. Artwork mentioned in this episode: Mona Lisa (also known as La Joconde) by Leonardo da Vinci; Man with a glove by Titian, Portrait of a Man (also known as La Condottiere) by Antonello da Messina; The death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David.

Balancing Diets of Highly Productive Sheep & Goats: Combining Performance and Health with Dr. Cannas from the University of Italy & Dr. Teixeira from the University of Idaho

Dr. Cannas presented a Real Science Lecture webinar on October 17, 2023, titled “Diets of Productive Sheep & Goats: Performance & Health.” You can find the webinar recording at balchem.com/realscience.  Dr. Cannas outlines the topics he covered in his webinar, including nutritional requirement differences between small and large ruminants, particularly in late gestation. Small ruminants have a shorter gestation and are more prolific than cattle, for example, and this means they have more nutritional challenges in late gestation. Dr. Cannas covered supplementation, basal diet quality, and sorting ewes or does by number of fetuses. He also discussed how high milk-producing sheep and goats partition nutrients. (10:36)Many people treat sheep and goats like smaller, low-producing cattle. Dr. Cannas considers this approach a big mistake. During pregnancy and lactation, sheep and goats are highly-producing animals that garner the same attention given to high-producing dairy and beef cattle. Dr. Texeira agrees and reminds the audience that just because sheep and goats are very adaptable animals doesn't mean you should feed them low-quality diets. Jessica mentions that providing poor-quality feed may not allow the ewe or doe to meet her genetic potential. (21:51)The panel discusses the importance of record keeping and data to evaluate management changes. (27:31)Jessica asks about how Antonello fed rumen-protected choline in his experiments. They fed individually to ensure each animal received the correct dose but recommended to mix it into a TMR or mineral supplement for on-farm feeding. (33:12)Izabelle asks how many groups most farms sort ewes or does into before lambing or kidding in Sardinia. Antonello says it depends on the individual farm because they are so diverse, but at least two groups, singles and twins. They may also sort based on the number of days pregnant as well. He describes some experimental results from feeding rumen-protected choline to ewes carrying singles versus twins. (35:35)Dr. Teixeira describes some of the challenges sheep and goat producers face in her native Brazil due to heat stress. Jessica gives examples of management strategies to help manage heat stress based on her work at Cornell. (41:14)The panel discussed challenges with body condition scoring goats using a sheep scale since goats store more fat internally or in other locations like the tail. They also discuss recommendations for target body condition scores at different stages of the production cycle. (48:00)In summary, Jessica recommends that sheep and goat producers focus on what they do well, make small changes to improve their operation, and collect data to see what is working and what is not working. Izabelle encourages producers to understand what is happening physiologically in each stage of production to best manage nutritional challenges. Antonello reiterates that sheep and goats should be given the same attention and care as high-producing dairy cows. It is a complex business and there is much room for improvement in the management of small ruminants. OUT, LIFE – DEATH, SOFT – ROCK, LOVE – HATE, GOOD – BAD, VICTORY – DEFEAT, SWEET – BITTER.

He wrote and produced the Welsh-language feature films Y Sŵn (2023) and Gwledd (2021). “Y Sŵn” won the BAFTA Cymru award for best feature film in 2023 and received a nomination for the Broadcast and Celtic Media Festival awards. The horror film Gwledd premiered at the SXSW festival, is distributed in North America by IFC and in Britain by Picturehouse. He has received awards in numerous festivals including BiFAN, Motel X and Neuchâtel. His TV series “Bang” won best series at the Bafta Cymru and Celtic Media Festival in 2018, for which Williams received a nomination for the Writers' Guild of Great Britain award. His television work includes the original series “Gwaith/Cartref” and “Tir” for Welsh-language broadcaster S4C and numerous other English-language creations for broadcasters BBC and Channel4.Every language achievement is always a starting point, never a point of arrival. The political strength of a minority language is measured not only by its ability to build social and cultural cohesion, but also by the courage and determination with which it succeeds in facing the challenges of the present and the future. A language endures if it can speak to new generations and thus if it's able to regenerate and absorb new languages, meaning if it can make itself speak. Roger Williams' movies, in recounting the political struggle over the creation of the S4C television channel, with its entire programming schedule in Welsh, tells an exemplary story in this respect, not only for its own community. Because it testifies to how important a media perspective that is not purely conservative, but flexible andinnovative, politically useful in the daily struggle that languages sustain in order to maintain themselves as a historical culture and restore their own worldview.IL POSTO DELLE PAROLEascoltare fa pensarewww.ilpostodelleparole.itDiventa un supporter di questo podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/il-posto-delle-parole--1487855/support.

AMP Mental Health proudly sponsors the "Finding Balance" podcast. In the upcoming episode, Dr. Adrian Mesa, APRN, founder of AMP Mental Health, sits down with Antonello Bonci, an Italian-American neurologist and neuropsychopharmacologist renowned for his pioneering research on the long-term effects of drug exposure on the brain. Since August 2019, Dr. Bonci has served as the president of Global Institutes on Addictions (GIA Healthcare) in Miami. His impressive career also includes roles as the scientific director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Bonci's groundbreaking work, in collaboration with Robert Malenka, revealed that drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, can alter the strength of neuronal connections. This discovery has profoundly changed our understanding of drug addiction, highlighting it as a process influenced by maladaptive learning. His ongoing research aims to develop innovative therapeutic approaches to address the severe impacts of addiction. In 2013, a study led by Billy T. Chen under Dr. Bonci's guidance provided a foundation for using non-invasive brain stimulation, such as repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), to treat cocaine use disorders. Clinical studies have shown the potential of this technology in addiction treatment. Additionally, Dr. Bonci's publications have been crucial for the TMS company MagVenture in securing European CE approval for addiction treatment. Join Dr. Adrian Mesa on the "Finding Balance" podcast for an insightful conversation with Dr. Antonello Bonci. They will explore the complexities of addiction, the effects of drug exposure on the brain, and groundbreaking treatments for substance use disorders.

Linda Tugnoli"Art Night""Il volto e l'anima. Nel programma intervengono Amy Dawel, Associate Professor, The Australian National University; l‟artista Pierre Fautrel, Obvious Ai & Art, Parigi; Francois Debrabant, Direttore Museo Preistorico La Sabline a Lussac- Les-Chateaux e Oscar Fuentes, archeologo del Centre National De Préhistoire; Anna Oliverio Ferraris, scrittrice e psicologa.  Dr. Antonello Provenzale, Director of the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources at the National Research Council of Italy, discusses his recent book “History of Climate Change: From the Earth's Origins to the Anthropocene.”   Climate change is the number one challenge for the world. The rise in temperature of the last fifty years has been extremely fast, making it difficult for the environment to adapt to the new conditions. The expanding human population needs water, food, energy, and shelter to survive and flourish.  Humans need to reduce emissions drastically, re-naturalize the environment, stop the degradation of the soil and the extermination of and in the oceans.  The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned we should not exceed 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit in order to not tip into a dangerous melting phase. If we do not deal with this challenge now,  future natural disasters and costs will increase dramatically.

What's up! It's episode 94 of Payne Points of Wealth and we have a special and very different episode for you today. We have a good friend Rich Antonello, on the podcast. He's the former CEO and founder of Complex Media, a company that recently merged with BuzzFeed. Rich talks about the entrepreneurship journey, how he came from humble beginnings back in Brooklyn, and how that impacted his view of finances. He also talks about the state of the financial services industry in general. It's a great interview, Rich is a really charismatic guy, and he's got a pretty cool take on things. We think you're going like it. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Rich roots from humble beginnings [1:04] Having the guts to leave the guiled cage [8:36] The psychology of money [15:04] Sold not bought [25:00] What is the 3.0 version of what the market has become? [32:24] The impact of music [42:51] What was it like for Rich growing up in Brooklyn? Rich says it's not just the location, but you have to think about the cultural and familial side. Both of his parents were immigrants. His mom was one of 9 and his dad was one of 8. So literally big families, both Depression kids, and education wasn't big on either side. Then you layer on the neighborhood. It's a beautiful place to live if you want to grow up around neighbors and neighborhoods where it's basically extended family. The trade-off was that you lived a very small life because your exposure was so narrow. There were a lot of cops, a lot of firemen, and union jobs. His dad was a UPS delivery guy. The aperture of what you're knowledgeable about and what you see is limited. There were very few executives and very few financial guys. Rich's exposure to business was trying read a Wall Street Journal which was not something readily available. But he thinks it was a great thing in that he learned foundational values. You couldn't operate within that world in any other way. These were good people, but the view of ambition and even understanding what a floor in a ceiling would be like from a career perspective was just nowhere. And he couldn't Google it back then either. The library had a whole bunch of old biographies. It was great to be able to go read about Rockefeller, but it wasn't exactly what Rich would call inspirational from the standpoint of understanding what a blueprint or a track would be from a realistic perspective for somebody like him.  Rich's mind on money Obviously, Rich's financial circumstances have changed drastically from his humble roots in Brooklyn. But how has that changed his perception of money and how is it the same just because of his upbringing? The way we're brought up does color the way that we view our financial situation, financial security, and a lot of the decisions we make around money.  Rich explains how his perception has changed entirely but his behaviors have not come all the way along. He's massively aggressive and understands so much more and can see the things, but there's that little voice in the back of his head that always pulls him back from being as aggressive at the edge as he'd like to be. Check out the episode to hear him go deeper on this. Where is finance fundamentals 101 Rich thinks the lack of foundational, honest, educational, finance 101 is unbelievable. People don't like talking about it, but when somebody tries to sell them something they feel more comfortable going to Google than they do talking to somebody. They are looking for it, but nobody is offering that. We should all have had this type of education foundationally. Ideally, it happens at a family level, but most families don't have it to give. Rich says his own father couldn't help him think about the way his life has unfolded. That's not a knock on him, he just had no exposure, education, or the wherewithal to even think about any of those things. Why don't the leading platforms, especially the leading media platforms, provide that baseline level of understanding so that when you do talk about meme stocks and short squeezes you're not getting caught up in the hoopla but you're educated enough to look at that and fundamentally understand?  Resources & People Mentioned See if you qualify for a complimentary financial review from the Paynes Connect With Ryan, Bob, and Chris http://PayneCM.com  Follow on Twitter Follow on Facebook Follow on LinkedIn Subscribe on YouTube Follow on Instagram Subscribe to Payne Points of Wealth On Apple Podcasts, On Google Podcasts, On Spotify

Welcome to The Weird Episode of The Apologetics Podcast! “Wait a minute!” some of you are already saying. “Isn't every episode of The Apologetics Podcast weird? I mean, just this season, they've already featured a phoenix, a magical veil, a holy prepuce, and Timothy.” If that was your first thought when you heard that this episode had been christened as "The Weird Episode," you are not wrong, dear listener. And yet, this episode is going to be even weirder. A lot weirder. “Wait a minute!” a few of you are now saying. “Is that even possible?” The shocking answer is, “Yes.” The weirdness begins with the episode that Timothy and Garrick refer to as “Indiana, Jones, and the Raiders of Church History.” This week, Timothy brings one of the weirdest items ever to make an appearance on The Apologetics Podcast: Antonello, a pet trout from the fifteenth century who was raised from the dead after being fried by the friars. But then Garrick shows up and stabs Antonello with the Lance of Destiny. In the end, the dynamic duo concludes that Antonello is no match for the Lance of Destiny, though perhaps Antonello might survive longer against the Lance of Destiny's Child, which is a spear that sings "Survivor" before stabbing you. And, by the way, “Lance of Destiny” and “Pet Trout” would both make great names for bands. After that, it's on to the magical unicorns! Yes, that's right: unicorns. As it turns out, unicorns show up rather frequently in the King James Version of the Bible. Eight times, to be exact (Numbers 23:22; 24:8; Deuteronomy 33:17; Job 39:9-10; Psalms 22:21; 29:6; 92:10; Isaiah 34:7), which is exactly eight times more than red pandas are mentioned in the Bible, which is a real editorial oversight in the Word of God, if you ask Timothy or Garrick. In any case, this is the point at which Dan Kimball from Vintage Faith Church joins your intrepid cohosts to discuss unicorns, anti-shrimp laws, and other weirdities from the Bible that could only be discussed on a weird episode. But neither a magical unicorn nor a pet trout turns out to be the weirdest animal-related aspect of this weird episode. That's because Dan also wants to discuss the legality of donkeys in bathtubs. Along the way, Dan talks about his most recent book How (Not) to Read the Bible: Making Sense of the Anti-Women, Anti-Science, Pro-Violence, Pro-Slavery and Other Crazy-Sounding Parts of Scripture.   ABOUT THE GUEST AND HOSTS Dan Kimball, Ph.D., is the author of several books on leadership, church, and culture.
