Welcome to the Blink Friction Arts Podcast and the Music Crazy Robots.Today we are holding the Low End: exploring Renowned Female Double Bass Players Who Changed the GameWhen we think of double bass players, it's easy to conjure images of towering instruments, smoky jazz clubs, and the deep rumble of classical orchestras. But while the double bass has long been considered a male-dominated instrument—perhaps due to its sheer size and physicality—women have not only held their own but reshaped the narrative in profound and inspiring ways. Here's a celebration of some of the most renowned female double bass players, spanning genres from classical to jazz, who continue to break boundaries and make their mark.1. Esperanza SpaldingIf there's a modern icon of bass brilliance, it's Esperanza Spalding. A musical prodigy, Spalding plays both double bass and electric bass with virtuosic ease, weaving jazz, fusion, classical, and soul into a genre-defying tapestry. She made headlines in 2011 by winning the Grammy for Best New Artist—an award rarely given to jazz musicians. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and boundary-pushing live performances, Spalding's influence reaches far beyond the bass community. She's also a professor at Harvard, emphasizing innovation in music and performance.2. Chi-chi NwanokuBritish-born Chi-chi Nwanoku is a trailblazer in the classical music world. As the founder of the Chineke! Orchestra—the first professional orchestra in Europe made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians—she has made it her mission to open doors in a traditionally exclusionary space. A formidable double bassist in her own right, Chi-chi was a principal bassist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for over 30 years. Her career blends musical excellence with social justice, making her a vital voice in contemporary classical music.3. Linda May Han OhHailing from Australia and now based in New York, Linda May Han Oh has become one of the most in-demand jazz bassists of her generation. Whether leading her own projects or playing with legends like Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, or Vijay Iyer, Oh brings a deep musicality and sharp improvisational mind to every performance. Her tone is warm, articulate, and commanding, with an emotional range that speaks volumes. She also teaches at the Berklee College of Music and the New School, nurturing the next wave of bass talent.4. Kristin KorbA rare mix of bassist and vocalist, Kristin Korb blends bebop agility with a velvet voice. Originally from the U.S. and now based in Denmark, Korb carries forward the tradition of singing bassists (think Ray Brown or Slam Stewart) but with a distinctively elegant and lyrical touch. Her interpretations of jazz standards are joyful, inventive, and rhythmically tight, making her performances feel both timeless and fresh.5. Caroline EmeryFor lovers of classical double bass pedagogy, Caroline Emery is a key figure. A professor at the Royal College of Music in London, Emery has trained a generation of outstanding bassists, many of whom now play in top orchestras worldwide. She's known for her work with young musicians and her emphasis on posture, breath, and physical awareness—an essential contribution to transforming how double bass is taught and performed.6. Jennifer LeithamJennifer Leitham, a veteran of the jazz scene and an accomplished composer, performer, and educator, is best known for her work with the likes of Mel Tormé and Doc Severinsen. Her playing is powerful and deeply rooted in jazz tradition, but she's also known for pushing the envelope both musically and personally. As a transgender woman in jazz, Leitham has been an advocate for visibility and acceptance in the music world, proving that artistry and authenticity go hand in hand.7. Amy DominguesClassically trained yet artistically adventurous, Amy Domingues has explored everything from Baroque continuo playing to post-rock collaborations and experimental sound art. Based in Washington, D.C., she's a cellist and double bassist with a unique voice. Her work highlights the double bass's capacity for subtlety, beauty, and textural depth across genres. Why Representation MattersThe double bass may be one of the largest and most physically imposing instruments in the orchestra or on the bandstand, but these women show that passion, skill, and vision aren't confined by size or stereotype. They've not only expanded what's possible on the instrument—they've redefined who gets to play it.Whether you're a student, a listener, or a player yourself, exploring the work of these bassists is a powerful reminder of music's capacity to evolve—and to include.Want to dive deeper? Check out performances by these players on YouTube, explore their discographies on streaming platforms, and follow their latest work on social media. And if you're learning bass yourself—take heart: these legends prove that the possibilities are endless.Follow the music crazy team on YouTub @taletellerclub

Þegar líður fer að jólum er ekki laust við að álagið verður meira og meira, jafn vel of mikið fyrir marga. Það á að njóta og njóta svo margs. Í rauninni hlöðum við afskaplega miklu, auk gríðarlegra væntinga, ofan á vinnuna, fjölskylduna og allt hitt í lífinu og svo geta peningaáhyggjur komið ofan á það allt saman. Hrund Þrándardóttir sálfræðingur var hjá okkur í dag og við minntum okkur á að fara ekki fram úr okkur í aðdraganda jólanna og að við náum raunverulega að njóta, frekar en kannski bara að þjóta. Við fengum vinkil í dag frá Guðjóni Helga Ólafssyni og vinkill dagsins var að þessu sinni lagður við líkindi milli okkar Íslendinga og frændþjóðarinnar Íra. Guðjón gerði tilraun til að varpa ljósi á þau og síðan, hann lagði svo leið sína á nokkrar írskar krár og velti því fyrir sér sem þar fer fram, auk þess sem tölulegar staðreyndir er varða stærsta brugghús borgarinn voru fram bornar. Út er komin árlega Jólabók Blekfjelagsins, örsagnasafn meistaranema í ritlist við Háskóla Íslands. Yfirskriftin þetta árið er Ómerkt. Sögurnar eru 28 og allar telja þær nákvæmlega 88 orð, auk titils. Blekfjelagið hefur gefið út jólabók samfellt í 13 ár. Sú fyrsta kom árið 2012 og þá töldu sögurnar stranglega 100 orð auk titils. Á hverju ári fækkar orðunum um eitt og fyrir vikið eru þau núna 88. Við heyrðum fyrri hluta örsagnanna í dag og svo verður seinni hlutinn á dagskrá í þættinum á fimmtudaginn. Höfundar sagnanna í þessum fyrri hluta voru: Elín Elísabet Einarsdóttir, Védís Eva Guðmundsdóttir, Sólveig Auðar, Áslaug, Karólína Rós Ólafsdóttir, Aron Martin Ásgerðarson, Hera Fjörd, Elísabet Dröfn Kristjánsdóttir, Guðmundur Erlingsson, Kolbrún Dögg Kristjánsdóttir, Katrín Mixa, Ingunn Eyþórsdóttir, Guðrún Friðriks og Kolfinna Nikulásdóttir. Tónlistin í þættinum Léttur yfir jólin / Ríó Tríó (írskt þjóðlag, texti Jónas Friðrik) Þorláksmessukvöld / Ragnheiður Gísladóttir og Brunaliðið (Mel Tormé & Robert Wells, texti Þorsteinn Eggertsson) Jingle bells / Frank Sinatra (James Lord Pierpont) UMSJÓN GUÐRÚN GUNNARSDÓTTIR OG GUNNAR HANSSON

His new book 'Driving Marilyn: The Life and Times of Legendary Hollywood Agent Norman Brokaw' chronicles the history of William Morris star-maker, Norman Brokaw, known to Joel as Dad.Melissa and James share their enthusiasm for Oy! To the World Christmas with a Twist, a new musical playing this month at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre, which features their father's music alongside a hit list of Christmas classics composed by Jewish-American songwriters. James and Melissa take us back to the sweltering July day in 1945 when their Dad and Bob Wells attempted to beat the heat with wintery lyrics and remained sweaty but created magic by conjuring “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire…”They rushed the song over to Nat King Cole who was in at a few bars and proudly led a parade of 80,064 recorded covers, including James' own version! The Torme kids share their Torme Christmas memories which include their dad and contraband Christmas movies! Then Joel shares his family's history as a Ukrainian vaudeville acrobatic act that segued into the agency business when his Uncle, Johnny Hyde became VP of William Morris, discovered Marilyn Monroe and took on his young nephew, Norman to drive and accompany Marilyn to events.Starting in the mailroom, Norman worked his way up to CEO.  We hear about his working relationships with Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, Colonel Tom Parker, Dick Van Dyke, Gerald Ford, Mark Spitz, Barry Gordy and so many other greats.Joel talks about his complicated history with a father whose clients received his primary caregiving. Joel grew up with TV stars spending weekends by his pool, monopolizing his Dad's attention. But what were the qualities that made Norman so affective as a talent mentor? We learn the magic ingredients and hear how Norman took the new fangled TV department and made history with Loretta Young, Barbara Stanwyck, Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith.  Joel also talks about Norman's relationship with Bill Cosby and how his father's dementia buffered him from the horrors of Cosby's crimes. And, finally, what was the fate of Norman's sacred, secret keeping Rolodex?Plus, this week Weezy recommends Nutcrackers on Hulu and Fritz is all about Thelma, now in theaters and on streaming platforms.Path Points of Interest:Oy! We take a moment to consider the complexity of a life. When we have our Celebration of Life for a loved one, we often (because of time constraints) melt the individual down to a few outward factors. He loved to go fishing. He was a big Mel Tormé fan. You know, the stuff everybody could see. But we all live day by day, minute by minute and our lives covers decades of experiences. Loves won and loves lost. Successes and failures. We hold a spot in our families. I am a father, a husband, a son, a brother, a cousin, etc. We have friends, acquaintances, and coworkers. The Christian struggles daily with the flesh (the old nature). In all this complexity, there is one who knows us intimately. There is one who knows our fears, our pain, our loss, our sins, our victories, our strengths and weaknesses. God understands each us better than we understand ourselves and surely better than we understand each other.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Billy Stritch, Renowned Music Director, Vocalist & Pianist About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Billy Stritch, is a renowned composer, arranger, vocalist, and pianist extraordinaire who is both a highly sought-after music director and a star performer in his own right.   For 25 years he worked closely with Liza Minnelli as her music director, collaborator and accompanist.  He's also been the music director and arranger for many other great stars including Tony Bennett, Marilyn Maye, Linda Lavin, Linda Eder, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Christine Ebersole.    In addition, he's a wonderful songwriter.  He co-wrote the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning, number 1 hit song “Does He Love You” recorded in 1993 by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis.    As a solo entertainer, he performs sell-out shows in concert halls and nightclubs across the country, including his highly acclaimed tribute shows to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman, as well as his spectacular show with Jim Caruso called “The Sinatra Century”.  During the pandemic, he was one of the first artists to start performing online, creating his own weekly live-stream show called “Billy's Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his amazing career.    He's recorded numerous albums, and some of my favourites are “Jazz Live”, “Waters of March”, “Billy Stritch Sings Mel Tormé”, “The Sunday Set: Recorded Live at Birdland”, “Christmas at Birdland”, and “Billy's Place”, which is a collection of his favorite songs from those online shows I just mentioned.  He's also been prominently featured on at least a dozen other albums by music artists like Christine Ebersole, Jim Caruso, Benny Carter, Klea Blackhurst, and many more.   And if all that weren't enough, our guest is also a Broadway star.   He played the role of “Oscar” in the Tony Award winning 2001 Broadway revival of “42nd Street”.  And when he's not on tour, he can often be found dazzling New York audiences on Sunday nights at Bemelman's Bar at the Carlyle, and of course, every Monday night at Birdland, for Jim Caruso's Cast Party. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Billy Stritch, go to:http://billystritch.com/https://www.facebook.com/billystritchpro/https://www.instagram.com/billystritch/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPKEPvjXbWy_RQALL8KiLPghttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5BFCEjtWiORUGo96eKDbXi?autoplay=true #BillyStritch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

David Paich is a prolific musician and songwriter who's perhaps most well known for writing and co-producing Toto's classic song, “Africa.” Before David co-founded Toto with drummer Jeff Porcaro in 1977, he was an innovative keyboardist and session player. David honed his chops early growing up in L.A. where he worked under the tutelage of his father Marty Paich—an esteemed composer who worked with artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Mel Tormé. While in college at USC David started playing keyboard professionally and touring with Sonny & Cher. From there he went on to co-write and play on Boz Scaggs' multi-platinum album Silk Degrees. He also worked extensively with Quincy Jones, playing on multiple iconic albums including Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad. All throughout his work as a session musician, David also served as Toto's principal songwriter and wrote chart-topping hits like “Rosanna,” “Hold The Line,” and of course, “Africa.” On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to David Paich about what it was like to be such an accomplished player at such a young age. He shares crazy stories about working with Michael Jackson and Quincy on Thriller, and how he came up with the intro to Michael Jackson's “Human Nature,” a song written by Toto's drummer, Jeff Porcaro. Ep.121 How to Sing and Teach Jazz with Michele Weir

Alexa is joined by Michele Weir, a renowned figure in vocal jazz education and arranging. Michele is the founder of the online school Music Habit and the creator of the app ScatAbility. Additionally, she has written several books on jazz, so who better to talk you through the topic of how to sing and teach this genre? KEY TAKEAWAYS Jazz is a diverse genre with various styles and sub-genres. New Orleans jazz originated in the early 20th century and features collective improvisation. Bebop, which emerged in the 1940s, is known for its complex harmonies, fast tempos and intricate improvisations. Cool Jazz developed in the late 1940s and 1950s, and has a more relaxed and laid-back style, emphasising controlled emotions and intricate arrangements. Contemporary jazz, a diverse category that encompasses various modern jazz styles and fusions with other genres, represents the evolving nature of jazz music. In identifying jazz music, several key elements stand out. The rhythmic style, particularly the swing feel, is a defining characteristic. Singers need to develop their rhythmic sense and feel the groove to deliver jazz convincingly. Additionally, jazz singers must master the art of putting lyrics in rhythm to sound conversational, especially in swing. Another indication of jazz interpretation is when the performer adds improvisation to the melody, showcasing their creativity and spontaneity. In jazz, singers alter notes and melodies to match the lyrics' subtext, using vocal phrasing and melodic variations to convey storytelling and emotions. This improvisational approach allows for unique expressions and deeper connections with the song's meaning. In jazz, ghost notes and articulation add depth and complexity to the music. Ghost notes are subtle, muted tones that enhance the groove, while articulation techniques bring out emotion, expressiveness and individuality in performances. Learning jazz piano benefits jazz singers by deepening their musicianship, improving improvisation, and enhancing timing and phrasing. This knowledge enables more expressive performances and better collaboration with accompanists. Overall, it makes jazz singers more versatile and engaging performers. Scatting is a more organic vocal improvisation technique using nonsensical syllables. A teacher helps by introducing scat patterns, practising rhythm and pitch and helping the singer make up their own rhythms. BEST MOMENTS ‘No two jazz singers are alike' ‘Jazz comes in different packages, it's not always about a well trained voice' ‘Phrasing is a bigger deal in jazz than it is in other styles' ‘I want to be leader of the band so I need to talk to them in the musical language they understand'   EPISODE RESOURCES Website: Michele Weir: https://www.micheleweir.com Music Habit: https://www.musichabit.com Relevant Links & Mentions: Artists mentioned: Joni Mitchell; Louis Armstrong; Benny Goodman; Count Basie; Charlie Parker; Dizzy Gillespie; Miles Davis; Ella Fitzgerald; Nat King Cole; Sarah Vaughan; Carmen McRae; Nancy Wilson; Mel Tormé; Gretchen Parlato; Bob Dylan ScatAbility App: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/scatability/id966549564 The work of Judy Niemack: http://www.judyniemack.com/ The work of Bob Stoloff: https://www.bobstoloffmusic.com/ Darmon Meader: https://darmonmeader.com/ New York Voices: https://newyorkvoices.com/ Jazz Voice: https://www.jazzvoice.com/   ABOUT THE GUEST Michele Weir is widely distinguished for her work in vocal jazz education and arranging. Prior to being a world-renowned Neuroscientist focusing on how music positively affects the brain, Daniel was an award-winning musician and music producer. Dan has contributed to records by Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, and Stevie Wonder. Even the haunting, mega-hit song “Somebody I Used to Know” by Gotyé was mixed based on Daniel's creative input. In 2002, I wrote and hosted a series of documentaries called “Upfront” – about singers who made their names upfront with the big-bands. Here, I present the hippest of all singers Mel Tormé making his name with the most intellectual of bandleaders, Artie Shaw. Uber-talented Tormé was an actor, author, pianist, guitarist, arranger, songwriter (“The Christmas Song”), and drummer! He was singing with his vocal group, The Mel-Tones, when Shaw, the most successful bandleader in America wanted to expand his sound. This is the story of what can happen when two supreme talents collaborate - both a meeting of minds and a butting of heads! The music was as sublime as their infamous arguments! The show features interviews with, Mel Tormé himself, Ginny Mancini (of the Mel-Tones), and writer Will Friedwald. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Mel Tormé's Son, Steve March-Tormé, Singer / SongwriterAbout Harvey's guest:Steve was born in New York City to the multi-talented Mel Tormé and the former model/actress, Candy Tockstein. They were divorced when Steve was young, and Candy married Hal March, an actor/comedian best known as the host of NBC-TV's The $64,000 Question Show, but who also starred on Broadway in Neil Simon's Come Blow Your Horn. An avid baseball player and fan growing up in Westchester County, N.Y., Steve's dream was to play for the Yankees. He was a devoted fan who listened to games on the radio in the basement of his family home. Following every game, he'd switch to the Top 40 music stations and sing along with such artists as The Four Seasons, Nat King Cole, The Temptations, Ricky Nelson, and Gene Pitney. With his natural ear for harmonies, his favorite quickly became and remains The Beatles. By the age of 12, he knew that he wanted to be a performer, and at 13 he earned his first paycheck fronting his own band. After his family moved to Beverly Hills, he continued to develop as a musician and his influences grew to include Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Todd Rundgren, and Steely Dan.Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records, supporting it with a 20-city, national concert tour. Upon returning to California, he produced and sang on Liza Minnelli's Columbia Records release Tropical Nights, which became a favorite of New York dance clubs. He spent three years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV's $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles-based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America.Steve's first solo project after Full Swing was his CD Swingin' at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille, recorded with a crackerjack big band. It also features a duet between Steve and Mel (“Straighten Up and Fly Right”) and showcases an improvised scat lesson between father and son. That disc was followed up by The Night I Fell For You, featuring an alluring arrangement of the Lerner & Loewe classic “On the Street Where You Live,” and a number of Steve's original tunes, many penned with longtime collaborator, pianist and musical conductor Steve Rawlins. Those two releases were followed up by The Essence of Love, a collection of some of the most romantic, well-crafted standards ever written, including “Blue Skies,” “Stardust,” “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” and a playful duet with jazz icon Diane Schuur on “The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else.” His current jazz CD, So Far (on iTunes, cdbaby.com, and amazon.com), combines the most popular material from his first three CDs into one “best of” recording.Steve's latest CD, Inside/Out, goes back to his roots as a singer/songwriter, words and music written by Steve, on which he not only sings but plays keyboards and guitar. Because a natural interest exists in hearing Steve sing the songs his dad was known for, he did a 28-city cross-country tour for Columbia Artists Mgt. Inc. (CAMI) entitled Tormé Sings Tormé. Steve is proud to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to his father in a show featuring a ten-piece band playing the extraordinary arrangements penned by Marty Paich exclusively for Mel and including a multimedia presentation of photos and video clips. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://www.stevemarchtorme.com/https://facebook.com/stevemarchtormehttps://twitter.com/stevemarchtormehttps://instagram.com/stevemarchtorme#SteveMarchTorme  #MelTorme  #harveybrownstoneinterviews
