Cass and Ant's show is brought to you today by a tattoo artist, so it got us thinking about what kind of tattoos we should get. Anthony wants Cass to get something paying tribute to one of the most glorious rap album covers of all time. It's photo day today too, so we talk about how we prepped, and we get Anthony some beauty treatments. We played a few games for Rock the Gates tickets, including Canadianisms and Beer Trivia. Cass committed a major faux pas in the office, so we asked who is your annoying coworker and why? We talked about #Swedengate and cultural differences, what album is the perfect one front to back, and we had a very fast and the furious themed Ill-Advised News.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This year, even more than most, we feel that this day needs to be one of reckoning with our past and trying to make a better present and future. So we talk about the history of the word Canuck and the various stories that Canadians tell themselves about their county, and we also discuss the role of Classics in the early history of the colonial project in Canada, as well as how to think about Classics today in relation to Indigenous issues. And then we finish with some quick etymologies of uniquely Canadian words and phrases. When a language is shifting from being spoken by a whole community to being spoken only by older people, it’s crucial to get the kids engaged with the language again. But kids don’t always appreciate the interests of their elders, especially when global popular culture seems more immediately exciting. One idea? Make stories from pop culture, featuring characters like Dumbledore and Batman, but in the local language. In this episode, your host Gretchen McCulloch interviews Dr Ake Nicholas, a linguist and native speaker of Cook Islands Māori, the lesser known relative of New Zealand Māori. Ake combines her her work as a Lecturer at Massey University, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa, University of New Zealand, with having her students create resources for young Cook Islands Maori learners, especially video stories from pop culture. We also talk about Kōhanga Reo, or language nests, a method for language revitalization that was first developed for New Zealand Māori and has spread around the world, and the social situations around Cook Islands Māori and New Zealand Māori. This month’s bonus episode is about how people in the media know how to pronounce names correctly. It’s an interview with Tiger Webb, who makes the pronunciation guide for the ABC, recorded at our liveshow in Sydney. We get enthusiastic about words, style guides, emoji and more! Lauren and Tiger also quiz Gretchen on whether she’s learned any Australianisms on her visit to Australia, and Gretchen fires back with a few Canadianisms of her own. Feel like you’re in a cosy room of friendly linguistics enthusiasts by supporting Lingthusiasm on Patreon to gain access to this and 26 more bonus episodes. patreon.com/lingthusiasm For links to everything mentioned in this episode, including a map of the Cook Islands and the videos that Ake's students made, go to https://lingthusiasm.com/post/184283009071/lingthusiasm-episode-31-pop-culture-in-cook

Kerry Stauffer is the Executive Director of Media and Production Programming at the world famous Banff Centre. The Centre* (see below for Fred and Marv's lesson in Canadian spellings) perches on the side of a mountain in the heart of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains, smack dab in the middle of Banff National Park. Kerry oversees all aspects of Banff Centre TV, Banff Centre Radio, and Banff Centre Press. She describes to you the internal and external networks that broadcast and webcast performances and presentations on a global scale. Emerging, mid-career and senior artists in all forms of media arts and technologies from around the world come to study, collaborate, put finishing touches on their current compositions and mount live and film productions at a prodigious rate. The Centre is not a foundational training or degree granting institution. It’s a place for artists to hone their existing skills and talents. Participants push the boundaries in various arts and communication formats in residency programs ranging from one to eight weeks in duration. New forms of storytelling are developing all the time and the place to teeter on the leading edge in the production and dissemination of these media products is the Banff Centre. And now it’s time for … *Fred and Marv’s Spelling Corner We now present a brief lesson on Canadian spellings for our American listeners: The pronunciations are the same, but you may have noticed when we write, we will add a “u” in places that probably seem strange to Americans (but not Brits). For instance, an American’s “favorite flavor” is a Canadian’s “favourite flavour”. And an American’s “neighbor’s labor” is a Canadian’s “neighbour’s labour”, rigour and vigour, etc. Canadians also use “re” at the end of some words where Americans would use “er”. So you can visit the Banff Centre at www.banffcentre.ca (it’s not a typo). We could get you up to speed on other Canadianisms – like Skidoos, igloos, poutine and Mounties – but let’s just leave it at that for now. Ben and Don were on location in Indianapolis at the International Association for Food Protection annual meeting and the show kicks off with Don’s discussion of his script and playbook for the IAFP meeting. Don ate dinner at a place (Harry and Izzy's) that is not St. Elmo’s Fire and the guys decided that Rob Lowe looks the same as he did in 1986. Ben discussed his rule of three drinks, and Don does not subscribe to the same rule - which led to some tiredness. The guys were joined by Dr. Freeze who is not to be confused by Canada’s king of icees, Mr. Freeze. In discussing Ben’s new found obsession with the number 3 (like Jack White), Don shares 5ives, Merlin Mann’s list of fives (including #3 on the list of 5 guitarists who rock the three-note solo). Don’s continued use of his IAFP playbook as a prop leads to a dissuasion of Dungeons and Dragon’s, Canadianisms and the renaming of IAFP as science prom (where Don and Ben may take their bromance to the next level). Don alluded to the Florida Association for Food Protection’s requirement that Don dress up as a roach. A talk of accents let to a discussion of one of Ben’s current obsessions, FX’s Fargo with Martin Freeman. The group recapped Indianapolis happenings including Food Safety Talk guest Bill Marler's Ivan Parkin Lecture and the Oregonian’s Lynne Terry filing stories and tweeting from the meeting. The discussion went into some of the opportunities and challenges of having media actively attending sessions. The topic turned to non-traditional media, the 24 hour news cycle and clickbait lists including Buzzfeed. Don told a story about how a clip of him talking about food safety in China ended up on Al Jazeera. An age old discussion about the media (and others) getting science wrong led to Ben talking about an anonymous Twitter feed called IAFP no context. The discussion went into the War of 1812 (also known as the one that Canada won). In the After Dark the group talked about the Grateful Dead, handy folks and carpenters.
