Meet Channie Peters, longtime Bainbridge Island volunteer and host of over 150 BCB podcast interviews. Channie and her husband, BCB founder Barry Peters, will be moving away shortly; in this podcast BCB host Christina Hulet talks with Channie about her experiences and observations living on the island for 16 years – what’s changed, what our strengths are, and what we could do differently as a community. A very active member of our community, Channie is perhaps best known for helping her husband Barry launch Bainbridge Community Broadcasting (BCB) in 2014. But in addition to hosting interviews for BCB and teaching and mentoring new hosts, Channie has also been involved with many local organizations over the years. Not only has she volunteered at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art; she's also served on numerous local boards, including the Bainbridge Community Foundation, the Bainbridge Public Library, and Cedars Unitarian Universalist Church. Listen here as Channie reflects on her many years of community involvement and the challenges inherent in an evolving life. How does, for instance, a retired banker become a podcaster? What do we have to let go of in order to do something new? And, how can we handle change as individuals and as a Bainbridge community? Channie also discusses her and her husband’s recent decision to move to a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). CCRCs offer people over 60 a continuum of independent living, residential assisted living services, memory care and skilled nursing care all in one place. While her choice to move is being made primarily to be closer to her grandchildren, Channie also helps us to understand the value of making significant changes like this one while you’re still energetic and healthy enough to become an active member of a new community. BCB is the first community-focused podcasting organization in the country, and since its inception Barry has been responsible for establishing and equipping the necessary recording studios; setting up the web presence, hosting over 100 podcast interviews, and recruiting and managing additional volunteers who have collectively hosted over 575 community podcasts.  All of those podcasts have been focused on the people, organizations, issues and events of our local Bainbridge Island community. Now that BCB has just joined the family of Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) artisan craft studios, Barry and Channie Peters describe the BARN-BCB low-cost introductory class on podcasting on Feb 23rd and on making videos on March 9th. First up is "Introduction to Podcasting", at the BCB studio on Feb 23rd from 7-9pm (maximum 10 students): What's a podcast, and where do you search for them and play them? How does an audio podcast host plan and conduct an in-studio or Skype guest interview? How does an audio editor improve the recorded voice and music? What are the social media skills used with podcasts? How can you become a BCB local community podcaster? Taught by BCB's leading podcast volunteers: Chris Walker, and Channie and Barry Peters. This introductory overview class is for you if you're wanting to get started in video, or have a little experience and want to take the next step. In two hours, you'll get an overview of: planning a short video; ways to share videos on the internet; how to use a smartphone as an entry-level video camera; what's the gist of video editing in software like iMovie or Final Cut Pro (used by BARN). This is a step to qualify to use BARN's video post-production studio, and to tell us what further courses in video you'd like BARN to offer. In this 5-minute video podcast, meet Andre Pomeroy, a sculptor who quarried, sculpted, polished and installed a remarkable boulder-sized rendition of a family of four sea lions. His art is now a favorite climbing object for children at play at the innovative and inclusive "Owen's Playground" on Bainbridge Island. The park's name is in memory of the son of Kelsey and Stacy who passed away at age 6 in 2013, of complications associated with cerebral palsy.  In his video conversation with BCB's Channie Peters, Andre explains that he had the four-member Marshall family in mind when he rendered the four sea lions in the boulder -- representing mom and dad (Stacy and Kelsey), plus Owen and his brother Elliott. As he explains to Channie, when he showed the work to Stacy and told her about her four family members being represented in the stone, she cried ... and he cried. Andre explains that the suggestion came from Stacy that he create a sculpture large enough for children to climb on. As you'll see in this video, during our filming of the interview, one child after another approached and was drawn into the massive sculpture. One after another, they climbed on the sea lions, embraced them and played on them -- all in an entirely spontaneous and unrehearsed way. The animals depicted by the artist are Steller (sometimes called Northern) sea lions, with large strong facial features. The artist named the work "Love's Safe Harbor", and you can find those words carved into the hard striated patterns of the beautifully patterned Serpentinite stone that came from the sculptor's own quarry in Marblemount, Washington. Andre estimates that the physical chiseling and carving of the massive boulder involved at least 100 hours of physical labor, but the hours devoted to envisioning the design and other preparations and subsequent installation are many times that number. Andre reports that this is his largest work, although he mentions that he created a large sculpture some years ago for John Denver depicting a whale and a giant squid in a dramatic encounter.   In this podcast conversation, you can hear Andre's happiness at being able to bring his artistic work to such a joyful public place where it is being enjoyed by so many children and people of all ages.
