Adam Griffin and Cassie Bryant are joined by Sissy Goff and David Thomas to discuss how their books “Lucy Learns to be Brave” and “Owen Learns He Has What it Takes” help teach our kids about anxiety and resilience.Questions Covered in This Episode:Why is anxiety so prevalent in children? Why did y'all choose to use dogs in “Lucy Learns to be Brave”?In “Lucy Learns to be Brave.” you tell the story of how fear makes Lucy start to believe things that aren't true. Is that the approach that parents should take with their kids, helping them see what's real or not?How do you see the lesson on resilience in “Owen Learns He Has What it Takes” as an important biblical principle for families? How do you help parents decide when it's appropriate to let their kids face difficult circumstances and resist the temptation just to rescue them from their challenges? Can you explain what a “thermometer chart” is for and why you wanted to include that in the book? Can you tell us how you use a “feelings chart” in your counseling with kids? Can you tell us more about the books you have coming out this fall? Are these resources you see churches being able to use?How would you connect what y'all are teaching in these books with what Spiritual Leadership looks like at home?Guest Bio:Sissy Goff is the Executive Director of Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee, where she works alongside her puppy counseling assistant-in-training, Patches the Havanese. Send us a textMark's chat with Holly reveals a dynamic woman whose big blended family, with all its drama, has shaped her into an inspiring, resilient, and intuitive leader.  The universe shifted from a nursing to a bold candle business. Her rallying cry is progress over perfection. Holly talks about experimenting with a four-day workweek and then moving it company-wide. She found that even short meditations for her busy mind changed her profoundly. She has learned to trust her instincts and act decisively. Yet, people call her lucky. (Hint: It's not that that is working for her!)She challenges the idea of hustling, demonstrating that more can be achieved through trust, flexibility, and valuing everyone's need for rest. Holly shares how she turns failures into opportunities and how people can harness their energy to pursue their personal legend creation. This conversation is heartfelt, unconventional, and fully authentic, revealing the powerful force of believing in your own path. For example, she talks abour her plan to have a Praying Mantis as a pet, it is a thing. Without apology, Holly says, “Yep, this is a millennial's sensibilities."  She is not stereotypical, and she will change the world. Her passion business, Milk Jar, is the source of many of her revelations and growth. This is a blast of fresh air conversation from a clearly fun-loving, passionate woman. You will agree that this is a fascinating conversation. Holly Singer BioHolly Singer is the founder and CEO of Milk Jar, an inclusive candle company that creates job opportunities for people with and without disabilities. Milk Jar also supports inclusive spaces by donating $1 from the sale of every product to organizations that support people with disabilities to learn and grow and initiatives that create inviting spaces. In 8 years, Milk Jar has raised over $350,000 for programs worldwide, from Alberta to Ontario to the U.S. and the U.K! All areas where Milk Jar purchases come from so we can support our customer's communities to be more inviting. Holly says her employees give Milk Jar a greater purpose and a positive work culture that she will be sharing with you today. Holly plans to expand inclusive hiring in Calgary by starting a conversation around the benefits of an inclusive workplace and by connecting businesses to service providers and employees to support their inclusive hiring practices and create more inviting spaces. About Mark Laurie - Host.Mark has been transforming how women see themselves, enlarging their sense of sexy, and expanding their confidence in an exciting adventure that is transformational photography. http://innerspiritphotography.comhttps://www.instagram.com/innerspiritphotography/Sound Production by:Lee Ellis  - myofficemedia@gmail.com

HELLO! And welcome back to the Pass Around the Smile podcast. This year, I am so focused on bringing you episodes which will have you feeling relaxed, optimistic, inspired and READY to live life to your fullest potential. I'm so excited just writing that! In this episode I share with you the ups and downs which January brought me. My new year card spread for January was so spot on. I pulled patience and perception - and boy did I need to practice patience and change my perception on certain situations, over and over! While January was chaotic, it was full of lessons, and I'm grateful that I can now share all of this with my community. I am positive that this episode will resonate in more ways than one. Something we all struggle with from time to time is having patience, not only in regards to our dreams manifesting, but with everyday life occurrences. How we react and perceive everything that is happening around us, becomes a direct reflection of what we experience. In this ep I chat about how our inner reality directly affects our outer reality and how you can use patience and perception to alter what you are experiencing. I also touch on confirmation bias. What it is and how the majority of the world experiences it! Are you looking for evidence to support your fears or limiting beliefs? It can be such a huge block when it comes to manifestation. If confirmation bias is taking over your subconscious mind, you aren't allowing yourself freedom, peace, love, happiness or success.Something I'm also passionate about, is not ‘waiting' or ‘depending' on something external to dictate your happiness. I hear a lot of, ‘I'll be happy when …. I'll feel relaxed when …' Why not allow yourself to feel these feelings now? Because you can. They are available to you. An exciting episode full of golden nuggets, I hope you love it! Please follow, subscribe, comment and join my community below!View my website here! Resillience in Ministry: An Insight from 2 Corinthians

2 Corinthians 4, part of Paul's second epistle to the Corinthian church, is a profound exploration of the nature of Christian ministry and the resilience required in the face of adversity. This chapter delves into themes of integrity, suffering, and the eternal perspective that undergirds the apostle's ministry. The Nature of Christian Ministry (2 Corinthians 4:1-6)Paul begins by acknowledging the challenges in ministry but emphasizes perseverance, stating, “Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.” He disavows underhanded and manipulative methods, instead committing to the open proclamation of the truth. This approach to ministry is grounded in integrity and a clear conscience.A significant point in this section is the concept of the “god of this age” blinding the minds of unbelievers to prevent them from seeing the light of the gospel. Paul contrasts this with the illuminating power of the gospel, which reveals the glory of God in the face of Christ.Treasure in Jars of Clay (2 Corinthians 4:7-12)One of the most poignant metaphors in this chapter is the treasure in jars of clay. Paul compares the immense value and power of the gospel with the fragility and weakness of its human messengers. This contrast highlights that the extraordinary power of ministry comes from God and not from human strength. It underscores the paradox of the Christian experience – power manifested in weakness.Facing Adversity with Eternal Perspective (2 Corinthians 4:13-18)Paul then shifts focus to the trials and sufferings inherent in Christian ministry. He speaks of being “hard-pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” These trials serve to reveal the life of Jesus in his body. Paul's perspective on suffering is not one of defeat but of resilience and hope. The chapter concludes with a powerful statement on the eternal perspective that motivates Paul's endurance. He contrasts the transient nature of momentary troubles with the eternal glory they achieve, urging believers to fix their eyes not on what is seen (the temporal), but on what is unseen (the eternal).Contemporary Relevance: Endurance and Hope in TrialsFor modern readers, 2 Corinthians 4 is a source of encouragement and perspective. It offers insight into handling trials in ministry and personal life, emphasizing integrity, dependence on God's power, and the importance of an eternal perspective. The chapter is a potent reminder that suffering and adversity, though challenging, can refine faith and deepen reliance on God.Conclusion: The Resilient Ministry2 Corinthians 4 is an intimate look into Paul's heart and mind, revealing his unwavering commitment to the Gospel despite significant challenges. It encourages believers to view their struggles through the lens of the Gospel – as opportunities to demonstrate the life and power of Jesus. This chapter continues to inspire resilience, hope, and faithfulness in the Christian journey.

That is in line with precautions for hospital and senior care facilities. But all other pandemic related public health measures are gone as of today, March 21st, 2022. Anecdotally, there are many people who are following the advice that masks are recommended, even if they are no longer mandated for use inside businesses and offices. But one professor at Dalhousie's School of Social Work says we need to move forward. Dr. Michael Ungar is the Canada Research Chair in Child, Family and Community Resilience. He's also the Director of the Resilience Research Centre and is a Scientific Director, Child and Youth Refugee Research Coalition at Dalhousie University. He shares his concerns over the harms that have come from the actions we've followed, even though they were justified in the scope of a global pandemic.

Building You with Hayley Mulenda

Most times when we start something new, we are more likely to entertain the idea that we are going to fall or fail, rather than to entertain the idea of flying. I don't think many of us fail failure, I think many fail success - the idea of soaring and flying seems like a reality many do not want to entertain. This year I have let go with the idea of planning, but just trusting God.  Most times we will fall in our own strength, but fly when we trust in his strength.  Don't forget to follow @hayleymulenda on all social media platforms and @buildingyou.podcast on Instagram and if you're interested in joining the Building You family - please go to www.hayleymulenda.com/podcast where you can join our slack community full of others who are also on the personal development journey! Disaster resilience is the ability of individuals, communities, organizations, and states to adapt to and recover from hazards, shocks, or stresses without compromising long-term prospects for development. According to the Hyogo Framework for Action, disaster resilience is determined by the degree to which individuals, communities, and public and private organizations can organize themselves to learn from past disasters and reduce their risks to future ones, at international, regional, national, and local levels.Disaster resilience is part of the broader concept of resilience – ‘the ability of individuals, communities and states and their institutions to absorb and recover from shock while positively adapting and transforming their structures and means for living in the face of long-term changes and uncertainty. In conceptual terms, vulnerability and disaster resilience are closely related. Some see vulnerability as the opposite of disaster resilience, while others view vulnerability as a risk factor and disaster resilience as the capacity to respond. In this episode, I will talk about doing what you've planned to do, even when you don't want to. We've all been in situations where we prepared for something, a chore, or a project, and we're unable to find the energy to follow through. Sometimes finding the strength to get things started is the hard part. It's all about mindset. Which segues perfectly to what I'm about to present to you guys: honoring ourselves, the fourth pillar in the five pillars of balance. Honoring yourself will give you the confidence and belief in following through with your plans and bring you balance. Key Points: Setting your priorities and knowing what's important will give you peace and clarity, making following through with your plans easier. After establishing the confidence and the momentum to keep going, things will fall in their places. Most of the time, the reason why we're unable to follow through is fear and doubt. To overcome the hump, we have to present and honor the plans and commitment we've set for ourselves.   Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ Linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

In this episode, I will talk about the third of five pillars of the foundation of balance: Emotional Adulthood. Full disclaimer: Some might be resistant to this topic; I recommend keeping an open mind. Approaching the topic with an open mind might be the thing that can make a significant shift in your life. Now, back to the subject. Emotional adulthood is similar to emotional maturity or emotional intelligence kind-of.  It addresses a specific part of emotional maturity that doesn't normally get addressed. It's the part where we legitimately take full responsibility for our emotions and use that responsibility to serve our highest thoughts and desires. Join me in this episode of Balanced and Free Mom Boss as we dive into the subject of emotional adulthood and learn ways to control our emotions better to attain the balance and clarity we need.  Key points: Emotional adulthood is outgrowing the default immature emotional bubble and taking full responsibility for all our feelings, no matter what someone else does or doesn't do. When you're in an emotionally adult space, you will be more empowered to be the person you want to be and be in control of your life and its direction. Taking responsibility for how you feel, making choices on what you want to feel, and not blaming others or other things is an indication that you're an emotional adult. Our thinking is what creates emotional maturity or immaturity. It is where all the power and responsibility lie for our personal experiences and create what we truly want.  Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ Linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

Holiday Stress and Overwhelm

In this episode, I will talk about holiday stress and being overwhelmed during these times. Since the holidays are fast approaching and it's kind of my jam, I wanted my experience on how to alleviate stress and prevent getting overwhelmed during these times.   Join me in this episode of the Balanced and Free Mom Boss as I share tips on how to make the holidays more enjoyable and meaningful without stressing over it.   Key Points: Manage your mind and expectations. Pay attention to what you're thinking when you begin to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed about things. Make an effort to let go of the things that you can't control and focus more on the things you can. Know what is important to you. Be aware of what's important and manage priorities. If you know what's important it will be easier to plan ahead, set your priorities in order, and say ‘no' to less important things. Let go of people-pleasing, it's one of the biggest reasons why we're doing things in the holidays that we're not keen on doing. It's okay to politely decline an invitation if you really don't want to go. People-pleasing on the holidays will not do us any favor. Allow people to have their holiday experience and allow yourself to have yours. Bake goodies, share gifts, give service, because you want to do it. It's all about being intentional and liking what you do. Do it because that is how you want to enjoy your holiday.  Decide ahead of time. This will significantly cut back on mental and emotional stress. Having a plan on what to do or not do, who to see or not see, which events to participate in will help alleviate all that holiday stress. The less you spend thinking about stuff like these the more it'll make the holidays meaningful and enjoyable.   Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

In this episode, I will talk about anxiousness and the things that drive it. Have you always felt that feeling of always wanting to do more? That your efforts aren't enough? While it is not always a welcome feeling, anxiousness is completely normal, and when managed correctly it can help us focus in the right direction. Although the things I've discussed in this episode can help get you through these conditions, please do not mistake the feeling of anxiousness for anxiety. While the initial feelings of anxiety and anxiousness can be the same, those who struggle with anxiety disorders will tend to be anxious constantly. It's always best to seek professional help if you're constantly experiencing anxiety episodes.   Join me in this episode of the Balanced and Free Mom Boss for a meaningful discussion about anxiety and the feeling of needing to do more. Having that constant feeling of anxiousness is completely normal.    Key Points: It's absolutely normal to be anxious and have thoughts that we're not enough, that we need to do more. We are not at the mercy of your circumstances. We have the capacity to control which thoughts to entertain or not so we can focus on the things that really matter to us.Anxiousness is basically our primitive brain kicking in. It is just our brain trying to solve a problem that isn't a problem. Be open to the possibility that it is being driven by fears that aren't really a problem to be fearful of. We are not our thoughts. It doesn't define us. They don't make us good or bad. We just need to pay attention, be aware, and not indulge in thoughts that are not serving us on who we want to be.    Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

In 2019 I embarked on cross country tour in search of 35 Unicorns. The plan was to visit 35 States, run a 5k during the week and half marathon on the weekends. It would be a mini-documentary while driving a Mini Cooper across the country and interviewing "Unicorns" aka ordinary people who were doing EXTRAordinary things within their communities. After two blown engines and a totaled vehicle after being rear-ended the dream would not become a reality. Nevertheless I persisted! That sounds good, but that's not the reality, I was disappointed and viewed it as a public failure. The only person I shared the failed attempt with was my sister, I told her how I felt. I felt horrible. It was as if let those who believed in me down. I took some time to lick my wounds. All of the feelings that I experienced during the Unicorn Hunting Project were starting to resurface, because my car needed to be taken to the shop, and my driver's lic. had expired. Life happens to all of us, but its how we respond that matters. I put off airing this episode for months. Recently, Jeri Villarreal has been reframing failure in here post and it resonated, I've been chewing on those words for a minute. Jeri said: "Remember that time you failed and it hurt so bad that it almost broke you? Then you told yourself that comforting lie to take away the pain, normalize the experience and explain away the painful result. Then, years later, the only thing that you remember is that lie you told yourself. It becomes your truth. It becomes the foundation that you base yourself upon. I've made it my mission to dismantle those lies at their foundation by purposefully doing the very thing that created it. By addressing the fear that started it all and overcoming the challenge, the lie falls away because it doesn't serve me anymore. That is how I make room for success in life. I remove those lies, those fear-based stories It is up to us to change our own narratives." Jeri's words influenced me to jot down a few thoughts in a Medium post. Perfectionism and the Fear of Failure

In this episode, I will talk about perfectionism and why it is not always necessarily a good thing. Essentially perfectionism is a sign that we're afraid to mess up or be rejected. Without awareness, perfectionism could impact our ability to create and maintain balance. Paying too much attention to getting things right often gives us tunnel vision. We focus too much on getting things done the way we wanted that we tend to shut ourselves out from the people and things that are around us. Perfectionists tend to over-plan, doubt, and worry about things that are not even created yet. This can throw our mental and emotional balance off. That said, wanting good results and the desire to be good at something is perfectly normal. We just need a conscious effort to keep our perfectionist tendencies in check.   Join me in this episode of the Balanced and Free Mom Boss for an insightful chat about perfectionism and failure and how it can affect our mental and emotional balance.   Key Points:   Perfection is not a realistic standard.  And, forcing that standard on ourselves can take a toll on our mental and emotional balance.   Perfectionism is essentially a fear of failure and rejection. Sometimes we just have to let go and roll with the punches and allow ourselves to be human.   Failure and rejection are only opinions. It can only hurt us if we frame it into something hurtful. Think about famous inventors, they look at failure as data or feedback on getting closer to their goals.   Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

The technology supply chain has changed significantly and continues to reverberate with impacts from the COVID-19 crisis. Most analysts agree there is no going back to the old normal. In this episode, I will talk about people-pleasing and how it can upset our balance. That's not to say that we shouldn't do nice things and please people. This simply means that we just have to be sincere in our intentions and we should be aware of the reasons and beliefs on why we do what we do. We help someone because that is who we truly are. We give out compliments because we wanted to brighten someone's day. We should avoid doing good deeds as a pre-emptive action into getting something that we want in return.   Join me in this episode for a discussion on how people-pleasing, when misused can be detrimental to our balance. And, when done with the insincere intentions, can conceal our true selves and create a cycle of misunderstanding, confusion, and frustration.    Key Points: If you're trying to please everyone, you're pleasing no one. To put it simply, people-pleasing is just emotional manipulation with the best of intentions.  Saying "no" isn't always a bad thing. You can be a kind and thoughtful person and still say "no". Just have to be honest when saying "yes" or "no". Sincerely saying "no" is a sign of maturity in your relationship. When saying "no" you don't owe someone an explanation. Self-honesty is key in knowing who to say yes or no to. In the long run, authenticity will make you happier and benefit you more than trying to please everyone.   Connect with Me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedandfreemomboss/ linktr.ee: https://linktr.ee/balancedandfreemomboss Website: https://brittanydowcoaching.com/ Coaching: https://balanced-and-free-mom-boss---brittany-dow-coaching.mykajabi.com/

It's has been a challenging year for most of us. I wanted to be clear that it's perfectly normal to have negative emotions during these strange times. We're all doing the best we can with what we have. We are all in this together. This is what this episode is for. Join me in this episode of the Balanced and Free Mom Boss as we talk about patience, resilience, and self-control as we try and get through these rough times and how to minimize its effect on us and the people around us.   Key points: Most of the time the negative outbursts come from unintentionally resisting our current reality and the negative emotions that we're having. Awareness and acceptance can help minimize this.Life will always have it's negative and positive. To get more consistent, controlled results. The goal is to balance things a bit more.  Taking responsibility for your emotions and allow and process on the thoughts surrounding them is the very first step in being in control of your actions and results. noun   1. the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. 2. the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.     What is Resilience? How do you define resilience? It may mean something a little different to everyone.    To me, it means whatever durability you have earned over the years through our experience of wins and losses. There are few things that are guaranteed in life but one thing you can count on is the opportunity to earn resilience.   When we have a situation that doesn’t work out or goes against what we thought we deserve, we see that as a setback. I want to help you reframe that. We need to teach ourselves to see that as an opportunity to get a little tougher. A little harder. More durable. A little more resilient.    We cannot avoid the setbacks in life as they are much a part of life as the process of breathing air daily. They will be in your life and be around the corner waiting for you. These are the lessons of life. These are your chances to grow.    Some of them will hurt more than others. Some are self-inflicted and some are just a circumstance of the situation. No matter the situation, it is a chance for you to grow.    Resilience is a hard thing to appreciate and understand because it isn’t easy or fun but completely necessary to attain anything you desire to earn. It is unavoidable in life and crucial to your development so find a way to accept it and invite the opportunities. They are key to your success.

You probably know the grade, because it’s quoted in almost every story on the topic. We’ve heard people on this podcast talk about it. So we thought we’d talk to the people who issued it. A recent guest column published in Time Magazine missed the mark in its criticisms of concrete as a building material. While concrete is known for its ability to reflect heat, the author, who also happened to be promoting a book, claimed otherwise. It’s been a little more than a week since the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee delivered on a promise to unveil and pass America’s first look at the next national surface transportation reauthorization bill. The bill, America’s Transportation Infrastructure Act of 2019, puts down a marker for spending and stakes out positions on several policy issues, including resiliency. Rachel Derby, Vice President of Government Affairs for the Portland Cement Association (PCA), and James O’Keefe, a former EPW committee staffer who now advises PCA and others on federal policy and legislative issues, visit the Hard Facts studio to give their view of the new legislation.
