Listen as Pastor John McKenzie talks about what a father needs.
Welcome Robyn Scott to Purposely, where she shares her organization's mission and her career and life journey focused on purpose. Robyn serves as the Executive Director of J R McKenzie Trust, a grant-making foundation established by retailer John McKenzie. John, hailing from Australia, first visited New Zealand in 1909 during a motorcycling holiday. Enchanted by the country's charm and its promise of opportunity, he made the bold decision to relocate his business. His inaugural store in Dunedin marked the genesis of his vision. Driven by the belief that a business should reciprocate its success with those integral to its prosperity, John swiftly founded the J R McKenzie Trust in 1940. Initially, the Trust extended its support to disabled servicemen, the Plunket Society, and children in need. Fast forward to the present day, the Trust, functioning as a private family foundation with an annual donation of approximately $4 million, remains steadfastly dedicated to social justice. It endeavors to foster a fair and inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand while bolstering charities, 'for purpose' entities, and community-based organizations in effecting positive change. The sustenance of the trust's funding stems from yearly dividends received from Rangatira Investments, a venture established by John McKenzie, renowned for its pioneering contributions to private investment in New Zealand. Robyn's illustrious career spans over two decades across various sectors, including government, charity, and philanthropy. Her inaugural foray into leadership manifested as the CEO of Fertility New Zealand, a six-year tenure motivated by her personal struggles with infertility. Throughout her stewardship, Robyn spearheaded campaigns advocating for enhanced public funding for fertility treatment and broader access to support services. Subsequently, Robyn assumed the helm of New Zealand's premier philanthropic institution for nearly a decade, playing an instrumental role in consolidating philanthropy as a formidable and impactful movement in Aotearoa. Philanthropy New Zealand, established in 1990 by the late Sir Roy McKenzie to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the J R McKenzie Trust, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy now overseen by Robyn. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

Host Fr. Michael Trail talks to his guest, Fr. Fr. John McKenzie from the Archdiocese of Detroit about the vocation of Priesthood in the Black community.
Jenny Gill joins Purposely to share her career journey leading New Zealand's largest and most respected charitable foundations as CEO, advisor and Board member. Jenny is one of the pioneers of philanthropy in New Zealand, from her first role in the eighties to now she has led the way for wealthy and generous individuals, foundations and companies, helping them to give more effectively and ensure they make a positive and lasting difference. In 1985 Jenny took on her first role in philanthropy as Executive Director of a private foundation to give away all of its funds over a set period of time. A fairly rare phenomenon in the eighties this type of philanthropy is described as ‘spend down'. The theory being that you donate all of the money you have to a good cause/s as quickly as possible to ensure you make a transformative difference as fast as possible. The organisation or the Foundation is merely a means to an end to deliver effective philanthropy during a specific time period. The Roy McKenzie Foundation with Jenny at the helm donated a total of $7 million over 9 years. “I went to meet him in his office in Wellington and I came out with a job offer, with no job description, no discussion about salary (however) an agreement that I would start work the next day. Well, I went to his office the next day and he handed me a blank pad of paper, a pencil, a copy of the trust deed, a check for a million dollars and said okay, let's go” Jenny describes the role she had as her becoming a ‘philanthrocrat', a profession helping the generous and wealthy to give effectively and efficiently, in fact she was one of the very first professionals working in this way in New Zealand. Jenny continued to play an instrumental role in philanthropy and in 1990 Jenny and Roy used their experience to start the Association of Grant Givers (now Philanthropy New Zealand). Based on similar organisations overseas it helps to encourage others to give and provides a forum for individuals and organisations to share their experiences with others. Sharing know how and experience at the same time helping people to collaborate on projects to have greater impact. Roy McKenzie was the only surviving son of John McKenzie, two members of one of New Zealand's richest and most generous families. They owned a chain of general stores in Australia and New Zealand before they were taken over by LD Nathan in 1980. The funds they have donated to good causes over the years come from the wealth generated by those stores as well as through investment firm Rangatira Ltd which was founded in 1937. In 2004 Jenny moved further north to Auckland to take on the role of CEO of Foundation North, known then as the ASB Charitable Foundation it is the largest of the 12 community foundations in New Zealand with almost $3 billion in an endowment with the interest benefitting people and causes in Auckland and across Northland. Jenny and her team were responsible for granting over $50 million to good causes on an annual basis. Jenny enjoyed 16 successful years in charge of Foundation North, deciding to step down in 2019 to spend more time with her family. This proceeded the arrival of the global pandemic and a crucial period for all funders as they responded to the crisis. This was certainly the case for Foundation North and the other community trusts as they responded to COVID-19 and the significant impact the pandemic was having on people living in poverty and on the margins. Jenny talks about being less optimistic these days compared the 'heady days of the 70's' particularly around the effects of climate change and what this will mean for her five grand children. Pointing out that it is much harder for individuals to influence meaningful change compared to past generations. As Jenny's attention shifts to the future of philanthropy and charitable giving she makes it clear that she would like to see more philanthropic money going into addressing climate change and environmental --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mark-longbottom2/message

Most of cricket's history for nearly three hundred years can be found behind a small shopfront in a quiet suburban street in Surrey, forty minutes on the commuter train service from London Waterloo. It is easy to miss on a first visit. The most obvious landmark is the large plastic poodle promoting the dog grooming parlour next door. But a closer inspection shows a handsome carved wooden cricket frieze at the base. Peter Oborne and Richard Heller went there to meet England's premier cricket bookseller, John McKenzie, the guest in their latest cricket-themed podcast.Read the full description here: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/episode-99-at-the-wonder-house-of-cricket-books/

This episode explores the story of two individuals charged with impersonating a physician. One, Gerald Barnes, had motivations of money and caused the death of John Mckenzie. The other, Adam Litwin, had a passion for medicine, caused no harm, and later completed medical school and is now a physician. The difference was engagement and passion for medicine. Quality systems require that employees are qualified. Diane and I discuss this with Adam Litwin M.D. and Bill McGuckin of Oxenham Group (https://oxenhamgroup.com/).
What happens when four Texans break every outdoor speaker on the market. Well, today I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the co-founders, John McKenzie about how Turtle Box came to be. Given that these friends loved a rugged adventure in the Texas backcountry or sail on Galveston Bay a speaker was always in tow. So, taking to the drawing board and a few renditions later the bachelors and now family men created the most durable, indestructible, and for lack of a better term badass speaker on the market. This thing is built for any adventure and the sound quality is no joke either. Whether you want a rock concert at the sandbar or some folk music around a campfire the Turtle Box can deliver. This is a special episode of the Eyes On Jesus Podcast. Archbishop Vigneron leads an in-depth conversation on racism, protests and the Catholic response. Archbishop Vigneron is joined by our regular host Mary Wilkerson, parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel in Livonia and our guest host, Fr. John McKenzie, Associate Pastor at Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak. The name of the podcast, Eyes On Jesus, comes from the Archbishop's apostolic motto, ASPICIENTES IN IESUM. Description 0:10 After greeting Archbishop Vigneron and introducing Fr. John McKenzie, our guest host, Mary Wilkerson begins the conversation talking about the Archbishop's recent message to the faithful on racial injustice in our society. Archbishop Vigneron talks about the Church's teaching on racism and how it hurts the diginty of the individual and their community. The Archbishop ask Fr. John about the usefulness and importance of expressing solidarity coupled with a commitment to change and then asks Mary, as a mother of mixed race children, what her hopes and fears are for them as members of the Church. The discussion continues by touching on the Archdiocese of Detroit's history with racial attitudes, Fr. John mentions the Mass For Pardon and how much it meant to him that the sin of racism was included. Mary asks about raising her children to acknowledge culturally where things once were, while celebrating how far we've come. The Archbishop suggests giving thanks to God for instilling in a culture "an unquenchable thirst for freedom". Talk turns to the USCCB's position on racism, Mary asks how the lay faithful can begin rooting out the sin of racism from our hearts and our communities. Fr. John talks about his time in Seminary and his experiences with cultural touchstones like food and music as a seminarian. Mary closes with an expression of hope and a belief that the Holy Spirit wil touch us even in these difficult times. Closing Prayer and Blessing 01:02:01

The population of older adults is growing at an unprecedented pace here on Bainbridge Island. Approximately 1/4 of the people living on Bainbridge Island are 65 or older. Recognizing this, it was decided that the next five years are crucial for the development of the Senior Center at Waterfront Park. The Board of Directors therefore embarked on a strategic planning effort to address current and emerging needs and to build organizational capacity to support and sustain the Center's growth and success. Based on the input from a series of five community listening sessions, the plan was completed and approved by the Board at its annual meeting on January 8, 2019. In this podcast Reed Price, Executive Director of the Senior Center; Nancy Lewars, a long time board member; Ann Lovejoy, a new board member; and guest host John McKenzie, a volunteer and supporter of the strategic planning effort, talk about why a 5 year strategic plan is necessary for the Senior Center, how it was created, what has already been accomplished as a result of the plan, and what is expected from it in the future. For more about the Senior Center, its many and varied program offerings, and the new strategic plan, visit https://biseniorcenter.org/. After three standout seasons at the University of Minnesota, Mike became an original Fighting Saint in 1972. His Pro Career blossomed in 1975 when he played LW on a line with veterans Dave Keon and John McKenzie with the Fighting Saints. Mike represented the Whalers in the 1977-78 WHA All Star game and remained with the team through their voyage to the NHL in 1979-80. Mike concluded his playing career with the New Jersey Devils and eventually embarked on a long an successful stint as an NHL scout. He is currently an amateur scout with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now that BCB has just joined the family of Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) artisan craft studios, Barry and Channie Peters describe the BARN-BCB low-cost introductory class on podcasting on Feb 23rd and on making videos on March 9th. First up is "Introduction to Podcasting", at the BCB studio on Feb 23rd from 7-9pm (maximum 10 students): What's a podcast, and where do you search for them and play them? How does an audio podcast host plan and conduct an in-studio or Skype guest interview? How does an audio editor improve the recorded voice and music? What are the social media skills used with podcasts? How can you become a BCB local community podcaster? Taught by BCB's leading podcast volunteers: Chris Walker, and Channie and Barry Peters. For more info, and to register, click here. The second introductory course is "Making Short Videos", at the BARN-BCB studio on March 9th from 7-9pm. This introductory overview class is for you if you're wanting to get started in video, or have a little experience and want to take the next step. In two hours, you'll get an overview of: planning a short video; ways to share videos on the internet; how to use a smartphone as an entry-level video camera; what's the gist of video editing in software like iMovie or Final Cut Pro (used by BARN). This is a step to qualify to use BARN's video post-production studio, and to tell us what further courses in video you'd like BARN to offer. Instructors are: (1) the BARN Media Arts and BCB Studio lead Barry Peters, and (2) experienced local video producer John Mckenzie who had two video productions shown in the recent Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival. On the evening of this year's Earth Day, scientists gathered to read poems of lament -- or "keening" -- with poetry speaking for endangered species. The poems were written by local Island poet Bobbie Morgan. The word “keening” comes from the Irish and Scottish Gaelic term caoineadh ("to cry, to weep"). It is a lament for the dead customarily for women to wail or keen at a funereal (source: Wikipedia). In this 10-minute video podcast, we see an excerpt from the event, including the readings of four poems for four endangered animal species. During the program on that Earth Day evening in April, twenty poems were read by 20 current (and future) locally-resident scientists, depicting threatened animals from 20 biological regions (“biomes”) of the world. Bobbie hopes that this poetry will enhance our experience of science and bring us to a stronger vision of a healthy future for our natural environment and earthly home. This event was publicized by Earth Art Bainbridge -- a project of Sustainable Bainbridge -- which sponsored a series of explorations of climate change by artists and writers in our community, which were presented prior to, and on, Earth Day weekend. The evening was made possible by Bobbie and the scientists who volunteered to read her poetry. John McKenzie, who is the volunteer cinematographer and executive editor of this video podcast, also voluntarily created a slideshow that played during the readings. Marcus Lang and Dusty Collings performed music that enhanced the experience of the evening. Sue Steindorff and Jeny Vidal made the Dayaalu Center available for the event, in the heart of Winslow. Additional partners and sponsors included: Artopia Creative, OfficeXpats, Arts and Humanities Bainbridge, Sound Repro and Sustainable Bainbridge. The 66-minute video of the full event can be viewed on the Art for Climate Change website. You can also visit Art for Climate Change on Facebook. In this 5-minute video podcast, meet Andre Pomeroy, a sculptor who quarried, sculpted, polished and installed a remarkable boulder-sized rendition of a family of four sea lions. His art is now a favorite climbing object for children at play at the innovative and inclusive "Owen's Playground" on Bainbridge Island. The park's name is in memory of the son of Kelsey and Stacy who passed away at age 6 in 2013, of complications associated with cerebral palsy. In his video conversation with BCB's Channie Peters, Andre explains that he had the four-member Marshall family in mind when he rendered the four sea lions in the boulder -- representing mom and dad (Stacy and Kelsey), plus Owen and his brother Elliott. As he explains to Channie, when he showed the work to Stacy and told her about her four family members being represented in the stone, she cried ... and he cried. Andre explains that the suggestion came from Stacy that he create a sculpture large enough for children to climb on. As you'll see in this video, during our filming of the interview, one child after another approached and was drawn into the massive sculpture. One after another, they climbed on the sea lions, embraced them and played on them -- all in an entirely spontaneous and unrehearsed way. The animals depicted by the artist are Steller (sometimes called Northern) sea lions, with large strong facial features. The artist named the work "Love's Safe Harbor", and you can find those words carved into the hard striated patterns of the beautifully patterned Serpentinite stone that came from the sculptor's own quarry in Marblemount, Washington. Andre estimates that the physical chiseling and carving of the massive boulder involved at least 100 hours of physical labor, but the hours devoted to envisioning the design and other preparations and subsequent installation are many times that number. Andre reports that this is his largest work, although he mentions that he created a large sculpture some years ago for John Denver depicting a whale and a giant squid in a dramatic encounter. In this podcast conversation, you can hear Andre's happiness at being able to bring his artistic work to such a joyful public place where it is being enjoyed by so many children and people of all ages. In this 4-minute video podcast, meet Barb Trafton, a long-time islander who has supported many projects for parks, and is the current executive director of the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation that coordinated the fundraising for the "Owen's Playground" project on Bainbridge Island. This is a chapter of a multi-part BCB video podcast series. As Barb describes in her interview, the project to create an inclusive park, designed to be safe and accessible for all, was supported by a very wide-ranging set of individuals and organizations who made the creation of this remarkable play space a true labor of love. Funding of the project started with donations from friends and family at the time of the October 2013 memorial service for Owen. As noted on the playground's website: contributions and donated time came from "community members, local organizations, educators, parents, caregivers of those with disabilities, pediatric occupational and physical therapists" and many others. Design was donated by Studio Hanson|Roberts, and laborious hands-on construction work and building of the park's artistic features came from a combination of paid and donated time from the staff of the Parks District. Further funding was provided by Bainbridge Island Rotary Club, the BI Parks Foundation itself, red buckets of collections given at local businesses, the Goldberg family of Harper's Playground, family and friends of the Marshall's ... and many kids! Some children set up lemonade stands. Others competed in a climbing-wall fundraising event. The park's name is in memory of the son of Kelsey and Stacy Marshall. Owen passed away at age 6 in 2013, of complications associated with cerebral palsy. In this podcast conversation, you can hear Barb describe the remarkable range and diversity of funding sources that culminated in the joy and excitement of the opening day, on Saturday, June 16th. In this 5-minute video podcast, meet Terry Lande, our island's longtime Executive Director of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District. Terry's staff gave their all -- and then some -- to the hands-on creation of this inviting and inclusive "Owen's Playground" at Rotary Park on Bainbridge Island. In his conversation with BCB's Channie Peters, Terry explains that his team at the Parks District were so inspired and attracted by the idea behind Owen's Playground that several of them worked on the project long beyond their paid hours. Terry invited his whole Parks District staff team to come to work at the playground on the last day before the grand opening event, correctly realizing that the hands-on experience would be memorable and fulfilling. The Parks District played a key role in bringing the project to realization. The Owen's Playground project found a home in the park thanks to a unanimous vote of the commissioners of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District ("Parks District") to earmark 13,000 square feet at the existing Rotary Park (which also includes two ball fields). The project to create an inclusive park, designed to be safe and accessible for all, has been embraced by hosts of individuals and organizations who made the creation of this remarkable play space a true labor of love. Design was donated by Studio Hanson|Roberts, with the laborious hands-on construction work and building of the playground's artistic features coming from Terry's Parks District team, including, for example, Dan Hamlin and David Harry. In this 7-minute video podcast, meet Ann Lovejoy, our island's much-beloved advocate for organic gardening, who brought her passion for plantings to the innovative and inclusive "Owen's Playground" on Bainbridge Island. Ann is the author of 18 books about organic gardening and the winner of the American Horticultural Society's award of excellence in writing. She heard that Owen's Playground had space for a sensory garden, and she proceeded to create an expansive wonderland of plantings that delight the senses and that extend far beyond the modest initial plans. In this podcast conversation, you can hear Ann's insights about the types of blossoming and fruiting plants that she chose, and the reasons why. The park's name is in memory of the son of Kelsey and Stacy Marshall who passed away at age 6 in 2013, of complications associated with cerebral palsy. This is chapter 1 of a 7-part video series. The project to create an inclusive park, designed to be safe and accessible for all, has been embraced by hosts of individuals and organizations who made the creation of this remarkable play space a true labor of love. Funding of the project started with donations from friends and family at the time of the October 2013 memorial service for Owen. Four months later, the project found a home thanks to a unanimous vote of the commissioners of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District ("Parks District") to earmark 13,000 square feet at the existing Rotary Park (which also includes two ball fields). Design of the playground began in March 2014. As noted on the playground's website: contributions and donated time came from "community members, local organizations, educators, parents, caregivers of those with disabilities, pediatric occupational and physical therapists" and many others. To help us get in the mood for Bainbridge Island Grand Old Fourth celebrations, BCB is pleased to offer our local Amabile Choir's renditions of songs about America by American composers. Here, we offer a 5-minute video podcast of excerpt's from the Amabile Choir's Spring Concert 2016: "From Sea to Shining Sea". These excerpts include, for example: "Route 66" "42nd Street"; and a refreshing arrangement of "America" In this video, Amabile Choir is seen in the dramatic space of St. Barnabas church. Performing with the choir are local jazz musicians. At their Spring Concert, the Amabile Choir performed songs about America, written by American composers. They took a musical journey across America, with songs celebrating our heritage and our American dream, including spirituals, patriotic songs, jazz, and old favorites. Amabile's website describes their approach to be "choral music expressed with love." Conducting the Amabile Choir is Anne Pell. In today's Fat Black podcast we get to speak with John McKenzie whom is the communications and marketing manager for Revbox. John has a big background in the cycling industry and I met him down in Melbourne, Australia in 2014 when a select few of us got to test out Specialized's New Tarmac. It was here that John told me all about the Revbox from the hotel to Specialized HQ. I was excited as I had previously got to play with a wind brake erg early in my coaching career and these things were cost prohibitive until now. John put me in touch with Philipp Schacht the owner and developer from Revbox who was kind enough to get me on one of the few early models. What can I say other than Pete and I were blown away and so were the legs! Especially after doing some of our standard trainer sessions that had been done for years on Computrainers and Kickr's. Don't get me wrong, those trainers are good and have helped many athletes. I just put true wind break ERGs in another realm of athletic development. In Todays Episode We Cover: How the concept of the Revbox began. Why track cyclists have been using ERG's for along time. What "wind-break" means. How rotational inertia makes you a better rider. How the Revbox is different compared to most other indoor trainers. How to dial in the Revbox to maximise training sessions. The Revbox app. The Kickstarter campaign. A sweet little deal from us here at Trispecific for those interested in getting onboard with Revbox (see below). Links from todays Episode: Revbox Kickstarter campaign - As I mention in the Podcast, anyone backing the team at Revbox for $1000 or more will get their choice of a TriSpecific Iron or Half Iron Distance Blueprint for free.
