A Tennessee family is reeling from a tragic incident in which seven of their beloved dogs were shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy while the family was out for dinner. Kevin Dismuke and his wife left their McNairy County home for an evening out but returned to devastating news. "She said, ‘Poe is dead,'” Dismuke recalled his wife telling him, referring to one of their dogs. When he got back to their property he found that only one of their dogs had survived. “They were all gone except one,” he said. The horrifying incident occurred when Deputy Connor Brackin, 24, from the McNairy County Sheriff's Department, arrived at the property in response to a welfare call concerning the dogs. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Brackin was dispatched to check on reports that the dogs were malnourished and abandoned. However, Dismuke has disputed these claims. “They were told the property was abandoned and the dogs were malnourished,” he explained. “I got the veterinary paperwork in my truck from three weeks ago. They all had a clean bill of health on them.” A neighbor later informed Dismuke that a deputy had arrived and started shooting. Details from the affidavit of complaint revealed that some of the dogs were inside campers when Brackin began firing. The deputy “loaded his service rifle and pistol and began firing into the campers at the dogs,” the affidavit alleges. Brackin reportedly fired eight times from outside the campers and then multiple times from inside, clearing the area afterward. The TBI has confirmed that the incident was captured on Brackin's body camera. On Nov. 12, TBI agents issued warrants for Brackin, charging him with seven counts of aggravated animal cruelty and eight counts of reckless endangerment. The deputy turned himself in and was booked into the McNairy County Jail, but he was released while awaiting further court proceedings. The sheriff's office later confirmed that Brackin, who had been with the department for less than a month, resigned following the arrest. Dismuke and his family remain heartbroken over the loss of their pets. “I don't care if you give me $10 if you give me $10 million," Dismuke said. "You can't replace my dogs.” The case is ongoing as authorities investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Episode 100 Bethany Markowski In March, 2001 eleven year old Bethany Markowski vanished in Tennessee while on a visit with her father Larry. Larry and Bethany's mom Jonnie had recently split up after a volatile relationship amidst allegations of abuse on Larry's part towards Jonnie. Jonnie had fled her home with few belongings, alongside Bethany hoping that they could get away from Larry. Eventually, Larry caught up with them, and a protection order was put in place. Since Larry had never abused Bethany, he had visitation rights, and Bethany would spend weekends with him. But on just the second visit with her father, Bethany vanished. On Sunday, March 4th, 2001, Larry was supposed to drop off Bethany after their visit. According to Larry, he stopped at the Old Hickory shopping mall in Jackson, TN so that Bethany could go inside and pick up a few things. Larry claims that after not returning for a period of time, he went into the mall to find his daughter, but he never did. Witnesses backed up Larry's story that he was in the mall that day, but none of those witnesses saw Bethany, and she hasn't been seen since. Since she vanished, Larry has reportedly failed polygraph tests, and has stopped cooperating with police. He has never been charged in the case and denies any involvement in his daughter's disappearance. In this episode, Bethany's mom Jonnie discusses her daughter's disappearance as well as possible sightings of Bethany. At the time of her disappearance, Bethany was 4'8'' and weighed 95 lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes. If you have any information on Bethany's case, please contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations at 1-800-TBI-FIND or 1-800-824-3463. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

To engage his sociology students, Elizabethton High School teacher Alex Campbell created a unique lesson plan. The class would research a 1970s cold case known as the Redhead Murders. By semester's end, the students had created a profile of the possible serial killer. Six months after the class released their findings, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified someone who fit their profile. They said DNA linked a now-deceased truck driver to one of the half-dozen murders. But with links to the other victims still missing, a new group of Mr. Campbell's students pick up the trail to solve the case once and for all. From iHeart True Crime and KT Studios, “Murder 101” traces how a group project turned into a potential break in a 40-year-old mystery. The podcast brings us into the classroom discussions on possible clues and an interview with the one person who might tie the crimes of Jerry Leon Johns together: his one surviving victim.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "MURDER 101" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE PODCAST. Mayhem on the Mountain and The Walking Tall Murder Mystery. The harrowing tale of his days as a rookie West Virginia State Trooper, thrust into the midst of mayhem on the mountain. What began as a simple call for a robbery at a hotel soon escalated into a hostage situation and ultimately, murder. The perpetrators, a married couple, plunged the narrative into a realm reminiscent of Hollywood thrillers, yet this was stark reality. Oakley Dean Baldwin is our guest. Among the tales Baldwin shares is also the tragic murder of Pauline Pusser, the wife of renowned Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser, whose legendary exploits inspired the movie "Walking Tall." Mayhem on the Mountain and The Walking Tall Murder Mystery.  Decades later, state authorities unearthed Pauline Pusser's remains, reigniting a 56-year-old mystery surrounding her death. Tip-offs prompted a reexamination by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, revealing shocking gaps in the original investigation, including the absence of an autopsy on Pauline Pusser. Buford Pusser's tenure as sheriff was marked by relentless efforts to purge McNairy County of crime, immortalized in film adaptations. Yet, his crusade against moonshiners and criminals amassed formidable adversaries. Mayhem on the Mountain .  The fatal ambush that claimed Pauline's life plunged Buford into a maelstrom of violence. Despite sustaining grave injuries himself, he continued to pursue justice. Baldwin's own career path led him from law enforcement to becoming a sheriff's deputy in North Carolina before retiring. His journey, intertwined with the legacy of his distant relative and the mysteries of crime and justice, fuels his storytelling endeavors which are available in the many books that he has written. Mayhem on the Mountain and The Walking Tall Murder Mystery.  As a seasoned crime scene investigator and retired military intelligence officer, Baldwin offers a unique perspective on the complexities of law enforcement and the human condition. Jayson is joined by Julia Cowley, a retired FBI agent and Criminal Profiler. Julia spent 22 years in law enforcement investigating violent crime including 11 years as an agent and a decade more as a member of the famed Behavioral Analysis Unit or BAU. Julia makes no bones about the fact that true crime is what led her toward forensic science and law enforcement. Prior to joining the FBI, Julia was a special agent and forensic scientist with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. She has a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University Of Oregon and a master's degree in forensic science from George Washington University. At the BAU, Julia was the lead profiler in the Golden State Killer case and has had other assignments in the FBI including investigating white-collar crime, public corruption and civil rights matters.Today, we're going to look at Israel Keyes through the lens of an actual FBI profiler. This episode was inspired by 3 amazing episodes that Julia and her colleagues did on Israel Keyes where I learned a lot of things that frighten people about Keyes really just had to do with mundane elements of what his interests are and we'll also discuss what we should really be worried about.Listen to part one and part two of the other episodes we had Julia on and check out her podcast, The Consult.Learn more by visiting our website and follow along with us on Instagram.

Nieko Lisi was last seen by his family on September 30, 2011. When a person disappears without a trace, often the most critical information is hidden in their actions and words from the days before they vanished. He was just 18 when he fell in with the wrong crowd, and possible pending charges made police skeptical about the reason for his disappearance. Some disturbing evidence has been found, and wild accusations have been made, but there are no leads about his fate. Is this a case of a man on the run, or is Nieko the victim of foul play? If you or someone you know has any information about this case, contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND or email TipsToTBI@tn.gov. Who knows? Perhaps YOU can help solve a mystery... SPONSORED BY: Ghostbed | Use Code: WOLFPACK - Save 35% Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It is January 31, 2012, and a family member decides to drop by the home of 24-year-old Billie Jean Hayworth and her fiance 35-year-old Bill Payne. The couple, who shared a 6-month-old son, had recently gotten engaged and we were excited for the future. A family member who regularly stopped by to check in on the young family was always greeted by the baby crawling around. This time it was different. After not being invited into the home, she entered through the unlocked door. She was immediately thrown off since there was not the usual hustle and bustle of the morning. Instead, pure silence. The women called out to them but no one responded. As she made his way through the hallway, she looked into the bedroom and saw Bill Payne lifeless on the bed. Then he came upon Billie Jean on the floor, covered in blood, with her still clutching to her baby boy. The baby had her mother's blood on him but seemed to be unharmed. The woman makes a frantic call to 911 in shock from what she has witnessed and tries to soothe the baby. Police head to the location nervous about what they will discover. This is not the norm in this quiet Tennessee town of Mountain City, population 2415. Agent Scott Lott from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports to the scene. He determines Bill Payne had a gunshot wound to the face and his throat had been slit. Billie Jean had a gunshot wound to the head as well. The house did not seem to be in disarray indicating this was not a burglary gone wrong. What it did indicate was that someone wanted both of them dead and made sure to make that happen. The murders looked clean, as in a hit.
