Imagine getting a letter saying your driver’s license is being suspended, for a ticket from a state you’ve never even visited. That’s what happened to one North Carolina woman. 5 On Your Side’s Keely Arthur uncovers how a simple mistake nearly cost her license, and what you need to know to make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

A Wake Forest woman tried over and over again to get Verizon to cancel her husband's phone service. He was diagnosed with dementia more than a decade ago and now lives in an assisted care facility. She contacted 5 On Your Side and within a week Verizon resolved the matter. Over the past six months, WRAL 5 On Your Side has reviewed more than 1,000 pages of testing documents to understand the toxic chemicals people working and learning inside Poe Hall may have been exposed to. WRAL 5 On Your Side's Keely Arthur explains the results of that reporting.

FLORENCE, Miss. (WLBT) - A man is in custody after a police chase in Rankin County. Tuesday, Florence Police Chief Brad Burns told WLBT 3 On Your Side that officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a 2011 Black GMC Yukon on Highway 49 for improper equipment violations. Chief Burns said that while officers attempted to get the suspect and driver of the vehicle, Thomas Fresquez, out of the vehicle, he took off, and a chase ensued. Florence police said the driver ran multiple red lights into the city of Richland. With Richland PD's assistance, the Yukon was spiked near Kroger, where it was a successful hit as three tires were disabled. A Richland Police K-9 was deployed into the vehicle, and Fresquez was then removed from his vehicle and taken into custody. According to the chief, the man was found to have a large amount of THC wax and three firearms. Fresquez faces multiple charges, including trafficking a controlled substance, felony fleeing, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana in close proximity of a firearm, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, false information to a law enforcement officer, suspended driver's license, no insurance expired tag, and improper equipment. Fresquez also has a full extradition warrant from Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Mississippi Highway Patrol also assisted with the arrest.

Everyone likes to take a little time off for a vacation, but then again, we all seem to take our vacations at the same time. That usually causes long lines, higher prices, and overall just a bad experience. So, today, Steve Builday joins us on the On Your Side podcast. He's the Director of Travel for AARP, and he has some great tips to make your vacation a whole lot better. 

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Months after a judge sentenced a Florence man to life in prison for killing two people near Hal's St. Paddy's Parade, his girlfriend has decided to plead guilty for her role in the aftermath that followed. Jenny Lukens took a plea deal this week, admitting to hindering prosecution. In court documents obtained by 3 On Your Side, Lukens said she intentionally misled police to help her boyfriend -- Jordan Cummins -- avoid conviction. She admitted to leaving the scene of the killing before police arrived, and embellished Cummins' story to investigators, hoping it would help him. In June, a Hinds County jury found Cummins guilty on two counts of first-degree murder for killing 27-year-old Joshua Spann and 23-year-old Auden Simpkins. The shooting took place on Jefferson Street in Jackson, a few blocks from the parade route for the Hal's St. Paddy's Parade in March 2023. Lukens' deal means she won't serve any jail time, agreeing to a 14-year sentence with 10 of those years suspended, according to prosecutors. She'll serve the remaining four years on house arrest.

(WLBT) - The suspect who shot and killed a Summit Police officer Thursday had a warrant filed weeks earlier, ordering law enforcement to arrest him for violating conditions of a 2020 prison release, according to records obtained exclusively by 3 On Your Side. Our investigation reveals that Usher Leonard, 25, had violated his post-release supervision requirements by failing to check in with the Mississippi Department of Corrections for more than a year. It's unclear whether Leonard's apparent violation of the law might have played a role in what took place Wednesday when state investigators say he shot and killed Summit Police Officer Troy Floyd. However, WLBT found the affidavit supporting a warrant for Leonard's arrest came nearly 20 months before the court apparently approved it, on October 10, 2022. The court did not provide any documentation for the delay in its official filings or docket. Leonard's post-release conditions stemmed from a 2018 conviction on 11 burglary counts and eight counts of conspiracy to commit burglary in Pike County. He served two years of a six-year sentence, with MDOC releasing him through earned release supervision. Seven months later, authorities found Leonard had violated his post-release conditions by failing to pay court fines or complete his restitution.
