When you're just getting started and getting your feet wet in a new space, it's natural to look around and study the industry standards and norms. Obsessing over what you should do, how you should look, how you should be showing up can be paralyzing. Even worse, when you arrive and no one there looks like you, the thought of running away is hard to ignore. Think about this… There is no one path into art. There is no standard or art norms that should keep you from playing with and pursuing what makes you come to life. Art is healing and beautiful and has a universal song that sounds different to every artist out here. Artists come in many shades and complexities from countless paths to find the creative spark that brings them to life. Today's guest, Joy Ting Charde, ignited her creative spark as a way to communicate with her teacher and other students when she was new in the U.S. and couldn't speak English. Even still, her journey to art came after becoming an elementary school teacher. Not having professional training, working a full-time job that she actually enjoys is the part of this artist that is perhaps most relatable and familiar. Joyful Takeaways for Non-Traditional Artists: A great journey can start with a small 7 day challenge Taking fun courses that spark your interests and curiosity can be life changing Like the Alchemist, journeys often take us full circle Having a fulfilling artistic journey doesn't mean you have to leave your 9 to 5 “Give yourself a little challenge, and who knows, you might fall in love with it and end up doing the same kind of creative work for a long time.” -Joy Ting Charde Joy started art licensing and has an agent, but her path there was not linear. The roads don't have to make sense, you just have to show up willing to explore and be open to changes. Give yourself a chance to fall in love with new creative work. Today's episode features, for the first time ever on the Grounded and Growing Podcast, a published author named Charde Vera. Charde is a New York based author who is also a full time mother as well as a U.S. Navy veteran. In this episode, Charde gives us the inside scoop on her new children's book entitled She Is which will be releasing on August 30, 2021. Her book She Is was created for young girls and is filled with positive affirmations and encouraging poems to enforce self love and build self esteem. In her efforts to create a positive impact for young women, she also created a companion journal for her book called “I Am” which allows readers to apply what they learn in the book and really be able to implement its teachings of positive affirmations through the art of journaling. This episode is filled with positivity, encouragement and lots of vulnerable moments as Charde shares the process of what it was like to bring this book to life. We talk about the realness of feeling inadequate in the pursuit of something new and how to overcome our own doubts and fears. This episode is really amazing especially if you are a parent and is filled with so many creative ideas and ways for parents and children to bond and create open and honest relationships. Even for myself, although I am not a parent, there is still so much to learn about how your own growth journey can affect others around you and the importance of taking responsibility for your own happiness and energy. My guest today is Sharon Charde. Sharon is a poet, teacher and author, who recently published a heartfelt, beautifully written book “I Am Not A Juvenile Delinquent: How Poetry Changed a Group of At Risk Young Women”. For over a decade Sharon volunteered as a poetry teacher at a residential treatment facility for delinquent girls. Her initial intention was to reach out to these young women and have them tell their stories, but what happened was that Sharon fell in love with the girls, and as we know about true love… love takes us places we don’t expect to go! This book is a testament that love heals, expands, empowers and transforms us. Sharon compassionately weaves the story of her personal grief and suffering, seamlessly into the stories of the girls’ grief and suffering. She facilitated and witnessed the girls pull the dark shadows from the corner of their souls, bring them into the light, transforming pain and suffering into poetry. Sharon’s authentic dedication to the girls, their lives, along with her tenacity to have their stories heard is priceless. The girls’ courage and realness and the profound power of poetry taught Sharon how to carry her own grief differently, making room for more love than pain. Check out the show notes for links to Sharon’s website, a promotional video highlighting the voices of these young women, resources she mentioned, along with 2 independent book stores that carry her book. With the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I encourage you to watch a 12 minute video on YouTube called "Boatlift". My previous podcast guest Rick Velleu co-directed this short film with his business partner Eddie Rosenstein. It's a poignant, inspiring account of resilience and the human spirit. Enjoy the podcast!

The hands-on approach of Enhanced Care Initiatives' "Easy Care" program for the frail elderly is built on human interaction, communication and reinforcement. Nurses act as health advocates, pulling together all aspects of a patient's care and supporting the patient by working for them in the healthcare system. However, technology has its place: a tablet PC is a communication hub for nurses, a web-based patient data collection tool is an information repository, and in-home monitoring tracks meds intake. Dr John Charde, Enhanced Care Initiatives' vice president of strategic development, described how Enhanced Care Initiatives varied programs "touch" the frail elderly. Charde and Laurie Russell, XLHealth's senior director of health solutions, explored how to create effective care management approaches for the frail elderly during an April 26, 2007 audio conference, Managing Transitions to Care for the Frail Elderly.
