His broadcast television investigative journalism has also won the top broadcast award, a Logie. Ross is the co-author of bestselling books Dead Man Running and Above the Law, both exposes of organised crime in Australian and international outlaw motorcycle gangs, as well as Charles Bean, Lost Diggers, Lost Tommys and Secrecy for Sale: Inside the Global Offshore Money Maze. Award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has been intrigued by UFOs since mysterious glowing lights were reported near New Zealand's Kaikoura mountains when he was a teenager. The 1978 sighting is just one of thousands since the 1940s, and yet research into UFOs is still seen as the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists. In 2020, however, after decades of denial, the US Department of Defence made the astonishing admission that strange aerial and underwater objects frequently reported and videoed by pilots and tracked by sensors are real, unexplained, and pose a genuine national security concern. Compelled to investigate, Coulthart has embarked on what's become the most confronting and challenging story of his career, speaking to witnesses, researchers, scientists, spies and defence and intelligence officials and insiders. What he has found suggests that the world is on the cusp of extraordinary technological breakthroughs and cultural revelations. Bizarre, sometimes mind-blowing and utterly fascinating, In Plain Sight tells a story that's largely escaped the radar of mainstream media coverage but has been there all along. Now it's time to observe what's in front of our eyes. What a legend! I could have spent all day talking to this inquisitive, open, honest, intelligent actor, producer, writer, musician, producer. I don’t really know where to start introducing Joel, calling him a high achiever feels like an understatement. He’s won Logie and AACTA awards. Straight out of NIDA he was cast as “Charles Bean” in Deadline Gallipoli literally as the lead. Then came the Peter Allen mini series, and yep he was Peter Allen; he sang, and learnt to dance for the role. He bought tap dancing shoes and tapped in his garage for 2 hours every day. He’s worked alongside some of the greats: Sam Worthington, Charles Dance, Bryan Brown and was in a movie called Jungle with Daniel Radcliff which was filmed in Columbia where he played Marcus; a Swiss-German teacher. I could spend this whole paragraph listing off his credits: H is for Happiness, Safe Harbor, Mystery Road 2, I met a Girl, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Mysteries, the list goes on… He’s also worked in theatre with the Melbourne Theatre Company. He’s got a great (and funny) podcast called “So what do you reckon” this guy doesn’t stop. He’s back on set filming Ms. Fisher’s Modern Mysteries Series 2!Joel Jackson is a powerhouse, I can’t wait to watch his career unfold even more, and it was a total honor to chat to this all round legend. In this RadioFinance session, we looked at economic recovery scenarios post-pandemic. John Gong, professor of economics at the University of International Business and Economics, shared how history shows possible outcomes to the crisis, with economies experiencing rebounds and a period of boom after recessions. Charles Bean, former deputy governor for monetary policy at the Bank of England, emphasised that recovery pace depends on both government decisions and consumer behaviour. On the other hand, Taimur Baig, managing director and chief economist at DBS Bank, stressed that although stimulus measures help economies, short-term “band aid” solutions will be ineffective and may stagger recovery process, causing longer term damage. Post-pandemic policies will also define economic trajectory. The key points that emerged from the discussion were: • Governments focus on funding SMEs and creating jobs to re-energise the economy • Chinese authorities are channelling resources to the ‘consumption' side of the economy, with a focus on upgrading soft infrastructure such as the rollout of 5G services • Markets are pricing in a deglobalisation bias, with elements such as cost-push inflation and lower returns to capital, but these fail to show in numbers • Business models will change as companies undergo structural and operational transformations

“It’s a mistake to assume that where we are now, is going to be where we are for ever more"  Eminent macroeconomist and former Deputy Governor of Bank of England Charles Bean joins Kopi time to talk about economic policy during a pandemic. He recognises the necessity of lockdown and the associated seismic support measures, but going forward, he favours far more targetted policies. Instead of across the board sales tax cuts, for instance, only highly vulnerable firms and individuals should be supported in the next round of measures. Sir Charles is concerned about the scarring effect of the economic crisis on the current generation of youth about to enter the workforce. To ensure that their lifetime job and earning prospects don’t suffer in a lasting manner, policy support is imperative, including in the areas of job training and incentive for employers. These measures can be financed by long-term government borrowing that locks on to the prevailing low rates. On monetary policy, a few years of low rates look likely, but there would likely be financial stability consequences. Uncertainty around post-Brexit UK lingers, but that is dwarfed by the new set of uncertainties around the pandemic. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on the WarriorU Podcast I talk to Australian actor Joel Jackson. The underlying theme of the podcast is “Growth vs Success” in what is a very public industry. If ever there is a podcast that embodies David Epstein's theory that “generalists” thrive in a “specialist's” world, then this is it. Joel is known for his roles; Peter Allen in Peter Allen; Not the Boy Next Door and Charles Bean in Deadline Gallipoli. Joel and I discuss his upbringing in North Western Australia, including how he dealt with bullying in that remote location, and how he realised how culturally limited his understanding was when he finally arrived in Sydney to attend NIDA.In 2014 Joel won the role of Charles Bean in Foxtel's Deadline Gallipoli alongside Sam Worthington. In 2015 the show aired to rave reviews from the critics and public alike, recognised with 8 AACTA nominations in 2015, including Best Actor for Joel's role as Charles Bean. Also at the beginning of 2015 Joel filmed Channel 7's miniseries biopic of the famed entertainer, Peter Allen in Peter Allen; Not the Boy Next Door playing the title role. The show was recognised as one of the best TV dramas of the year garnering 10 AACTA nominations in total, including Best Actor for Joel's depiction of Peter Allen. My favourite part of the podcast (other than me singing to Joel) was his tips for how to be resilient in the face of no! Joel is grounded, gifted and authentic. This one is so good! Peter talks about these remarkably candid diaries and what they reveal about Bean, who was Australia’s official war correspondent throughout the First World War. Bean’s position took him to London, the Salisbury Plains and every important Australian battlefield in France and Belgium. Mixing with all ranks, Bean sheltered in the trenches under enemy shell-fire or took up vantage points from which to gain unique perspectives on the enormity of the actions. Most importantly, he always kept a focus on the ordinary soldier. This talk was recorded at the Gold Museum in Ballarat as part of the Shrine's regional lecture series.
