Lockerbie: A Search for Truth Dr. Jim Swire searches for justice following the death of his daughter Flora in one of the worst air disasters in history: the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. On December 21, 1988, 259 passengers and crew, as well as 11 residents on the ground, were killed when a plane exploded over the quiet town of Lockerbie, Scotland. Thirteen years later, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of the crime and later released on compassionate grounds. In the wake of Flora's death, Jim is named head of the UK victims' group and, after years of relentless campaigning, becomes instrumental in bringing Megrahi to trial. However, Jim's absolute trust in the justice system is sullied forever when he comes to believe, to his horror, that Megrahi could be innocent. As the truth shifts under Jim's feet, his life starts to crumble, losing his job and ignoring his living family for this crusade for truth and his desire to find those responsible for her death (TVNZ+ and TVNZ1 from Sunday). Friends Like Her In the wake of a catastrophic earthquake, a friendship between two women in Kaikoura turns toxic when a surrogacy deal goes wrong (Netflix). High Potential Morgan, a single mom with three kids and an exceptional mind, helps solve an unsolvable crime when she rearranges some evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police department. When they discover she has a knack for putting things in order because of her high intellectual potential, she is brought on as a consultant to work with a by-the-book seasoned detective, Karadec. Together they form an unusual and unstoppable team (Disney+). LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Francesca Rudkin: McDonald's read the room wrong trying to put a restaurant in Wānaka

Early Edition with Kate Hawkesby

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 12, 2025 3:05 Transcription Available

There's a Dominos and a Subway, but there will be no McDonald's in Wānaka - at least at the currently proposed site. Yesterday, Commissioners declined to grant consent for a McDonalds restaurant, largely due to the location. The proposed location was at the edge of town - where urban meets rural living. It is regarded as outside the urban growth boundary for Wānaka, at one of the town's entrances, directly underneath magnificent Mt Iron. A McDonalds was deemed to be at odds with rural living, the design of the building and surroundings not consistent with the landscape values of the site and its wider context. Commissioners considered reports and findings about the architecture, noise, traffic and future planning. Queenstown Lakes District Council opened the proposal up for public submissions and of the 367 made, 340 opposed the development and 21 supported it. While there were some who would have liked the opportunity for a Big Mac for dinner, many locals thought it would increase traffic, drink driving, litter, take business away from existing local businesses, stand out like a sore thumb, and have a visual and aesthetic impact on the town. Their issue was – was this really a fitting gateway for a town all about healthy living and the environment, yoga and wellbeing, ditching disposable coffee cups, and slashing waste? Or has the horse already bolted when it comes to Wānaka's image and culture? The town's population has increased from 10,000 to 18,000 in a decade, it's surrounded in subdivision development, and then there's the Three Parks development not too far down the road from the proposed McDonalds site - which is home to a Mitre 10 Mega, Warehouse, and numerous other outlets. Last night Queenstown District Deputy Mayor Quentin Smith told Andrew Dickens on Newstalk ZB's Drive the proposed setting and McDonald's wasn't a good fit. So did McDonalds just get it wrong – did they not read the room? Being tucked away in the Three Parks Development or the centre of town might have made it easier to gain consent. But would even that be acceptable for locals? I say good on the folks of Wānaka – who doesn't love a David and Goliath battle? There are apparently over 41 thousand McDonalds in the world. There is one about an hour away from Wānaka. Does another small town need a golden arch? I personally love rolling into New Zealand towns, exploring what's on offer, finding the best homemade pie (should out to Miles Better Pies in Te Anau), and having a chat with locals. It's good to get away from the familiar. Tourists don't visit a stunning place like Wānaka because it has a McDonalds, so it comes down to the community. If the community feel it doesn't reflect their values for whatever reasons —protecting the vista, their brand, local businesses or just plain old snobbery— then I say go for it. Fight the fight. Just like magnificent Kaikoura did. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Major earthquakes may not be a regular occurrence in New Zealand, but the threat of them is often in the back of our minds. With a major faultline running through the middle of the country, you only have to look to the events in Christchurch and Kaikoura to know the risk they pose. In May, new modelling was published that highlighted the impact a catastrophic quake could have on this country, including the threat of tsunamis, and how prepared we are for such an event. Cabinet today, and the promise this week is that we're going to get a ferry plan. Apparently there might be an announcement on Wednesday. It's been a year since Nicola Willis pulled the plug on the Kiwirail's ferry plan and it wasn't because the ferries were so expensive, in fact, these ferries were a really good deal. It was because of the cost of the port side developments. And I think this is something that gets lost in the whole debate when we talk about it. The ships weren't the problem. The misconception is that the cost was blowing out because the ferries were bigger than our previous fleet. So the biggest factor in the cost blowout was the relocation and the rebuilding of both the Kiwirail and Bluebridge ferries to get them out of an earthquake zone. There was also the need for the new port to have considerable earthquake strengthening. Look where the Wellington port is and how far away it is from the main fault line. You need to earthquake strengthen this. Our ports at the moment fall down, and they did last what time during Kaikoura. So there's a need for a considerable earthquake strengthening. Kiwirail also wanted a gold plated ferry terminal which would last long term so that you walk into it and it's like, wow, this is amazing. And then finally on top of that, the ports needed to be a bit longer. So, from what I've heard so far, it seems as though the government will pick up some second-hand boats which actually have more life after them than before them, but that's what happens when you pick up a second-hand boat. But that's not really an issue unless of course, unless they start falling apart as soon as we get them. So when we look at this plan that comes out this week, we need to be looking at the port rather than the boats. Will it be relocated? Will it be strong enough to bear up to the inevitable earthquake? Will the terminal be comfy or will the terminal be a chilly shed? And how much do you want to spend on this? Kiwirail was arrogant thinking that the government would provide them with their billions on their say so a blank check. The government wasn't wrong to say tally ho. But the government now has to prove that their plan is not just a second hand option that will continue to provide headaches in the years to come, because the indisputable fact is we are a country that's mostly spread over two islands with 26 miles of very treacherous water between them. And so the infrastructure that connects the two of us together is absolutely 100% critical. So let's see what this plan is coming out on Wednesday, we hope. Nicola Willis has made the right call to not give any more taxpayer money to the Christ Church Cathedral rebuild.  It's tough call. It's got consequences, as they're saying, it looks like the Cathedral night be mothballed because they can't figure out how else to raise the money.   But frankly, the country can't afford to give them another $60 million.   We're living on our credit card. We've already stumped up $25 million, and let's remember, this is privately-owned church. It's owned by the Anglicans. It's not like we're helping to build something that belongs to us, it belongs to the Anglicans, and they are reportedly sitting on about $2.9b worth of assets at last count.  To be fair to them, they didn't want to rebuild the cathedral but were forced into it by public opinion, but they are the ones who stand to benefit from the rebuild.  I don't want to appear to be callous about a place that is very important to Christchurch, but Christchurch, can I point out, has had a lot of taxpayer assistance, quite rightly, in recovering from the earthquake.  There has got to be a limit to it.  I want to compare it to Wellington.  Wellington actually suffered a lot more than people realise from that 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. I think we've come to release that the most likely explanation for all the pipes bursting in Wellington currently is because of that quake.   There has been, as far as I can see, no taxpayer assistance for Wellington in dealing with that.  Now I realise it's not a straight comparison. The Christchurch quake of 2011 was miles bigger and far more devastating than the 2016 Kaikoura quake, and so of course Wellington would not be assisted to the level that Christchurch has been.  But the point I'm trying to make is that, apart from some funding for privately held residences, Wellington has not been helped. Christchurch has been helped a lot.  Maybe it's time for the Anglicans to help now. It's their building after all. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
