#285 Steve Monaghan: The Advantage of Age in the Age of AI

Chief Change Officer

Steve Monaghan flips the script on innovation culture: experience isn't a relic—it's a strategic edge. As General Partner at FinMir.ai, Limited Partner at True Global Ventures, Independent Non-Executive Director at RAK Bank, and former Chief Digital Officer at both AIA and DBS Bank, Steve brings a cross-industry view forged through decades of deep transformation. From aviation to fintech to AI, he shows how age fuels better questions, sharper pattern recognition, and global insight in a world obsessed with novelty. Whether he's building Asia's first unicorn or designing systems that could restructure entire economies, Steve makes one thing clear: for Gen Xers tired of being underestimated, age isn't a liability—it's leverage.>>Built to Learn, Not to Fit“I wasn't hired for my experience. I was hired for the questions I knew how to ask.”Steve's journey—from pilot to pricing guru to product architect—was never about titles. It was about learning faster than the system could teach him.>>From N-O to K-N-O-W“People don't fear change. They fear not understanding it.”Steve shares his framework for flipping resistance into insight. At DBS, it became a model: learning, venturing, capital. The goal? Turn skeptics into innovators.>>Legacy Is Not a Headline“This isn't my next startup. It's my swing-for-the-fences play.”Steve's current project could restructure economies by eliminating capital inefficiencies in payroll and supply chains. It's big, bold—and designed to help the people most hurt by broken systems.>>The Advantage of Age in the Age of AI“Older workers know how to ask better questions. That's the advantage.”Forget the ageist myth. Steve explains why mature employees are becoming AI's secret weapon—and why experience, not just coding, is the multiplier.>>Mental Health Is Not a Risk Factor—It's a Design Factor“You can't build resilient companies without resilient founders.”As an investor, Steve supports founders with integrity, grit, and humility. That includes stepping back when needed—and being asked, not judged, for how you feel._________________________Connect with Us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Steve Monaghan  --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. From the Cockpit to the Boardroom: Steve Monaghan's 30-Year Journey Tokyo-based Steve Monaghan began his professional life as a commercial pilot before soaring into global finance. Over the past three decades, he's driven innovation in banking and tech, reshaping industries across Australia, Tokyo, and the Middle East. His past roles include Chairman & CEO at Gen.Life, Chief Innovation Officer at DBS Bank, and Chief Digital Officer at Riyad Bank. Today, he holds key positions with RAKBANK, FinMir.ai, and several cutting-edge startups, making him a transformative force in the financial world. Key Highlights of Our Interview: The Foreigner's Lens “Being an outsider brings a unique perspective—an untainted view of industries and cultures. It's about seeing things differently, learning from fresh angles, and questioning the norms others might take for granted.” “Being an outsider has its perks and pitfalls. It offers clarity but also means navigating unfamiliar landscapes. The key is turning the so-called disadvantage of not ‘belonging' into a powerful tool for change.” Immigrant Wisdom - The Dual Edge “Living as an immigrant since my twenties taught me resilience and adaptability. You're always learning, always adjusting, and that shapes how you approach leadership and problem-solving.” From Fear to Understanding “People don't resist change because they don't want it. They resist because they don't understand it. The journey is about removing fear by turning a ‘no' into a ‘know'—helping them see the benefits and feel confident about the new direction.” The Advantage of Experience - Ask the Right Questions “In the generative AI era, older employees often have an edge—they know how to ask better questions. This ability to craft meaningful queries is a huge advantage, especially when navigating tools that rely on prompt engineering.” “While younger employees might excel in technical adaptability, seasoned professionals bring a different kind of skill: the wisdom to ask the right questions. This balance of experience and curiosity is key to driving innovation forward.” Engaging Overlooked Talent “The bank in the Philippines found a surprising strength in its mature staff. When engaged and empowered, they contributed significantly to innovation, proving that tech adoption isn't about age but about the opportunity to learn and apply.” _________________________ Connect with Us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Steve Monaghan ______________________ Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. Charles Ormiston, Founding Partner of Bain Southeast Asia, and Jeremy Au discussed: 1. Founding Bain Southeast Asia: Charles established Bain's office in Singapore, which initially faced major skepticism from Bain's leadership who favored Hong Kong as the regional hub. Believing Singapore's strategic location to be better suited for Southeast Asia, Charles stood firm - even at the risk of his career. His bet paid off when the Singapore office flourished and became the regional leader. He pursued a unconventional hiring strategy for that time: prioritizing local talent over international hires and avoiding expatriate perks like housing allowances. This talent core cultivated a leadership pipeline deeply committed to the region's long-term growth, with key figures like Edmund Lin rising from the office's second employee to Chairman today. 2. Reengineer Your Career: After a health wake-up call, he decided to hand over to Till Vestring and move to an advisory role. His successor led Bain to new heights by expanding to a regional footprint with Bangkok, Jakarta and other offices. After a 14-month break working with nonprofits, Charles returned to focus on "transformation" projects which aligned with his strengths. This pivot allowed him to achieve a new "capstone" level of career impact and personal satisfaction. 3. Angsana Council on China vs. USA Rivalry: Charles co-founded the think-tank with Peng T. Ong of Monk's Hill Ventures to improve global understanding of Southeast Asia's high-growth markets. Their research is powered by prominent members like former Indonesian trade minister Gita Wirjawan and former Singaporean foreign minister George Yeo and partnership with Bain & DBS Bank. Charles shared how many business and political leaders had once underestimated China's ability to rise as a global innovation leader. ASEAN countries must navigate the increasingly complex global rivalry in order to maximize benefits and reduce risk from this trade & research decoupling. Charles and Jeremy also discussed being inspired by in-person meetings with Lee Kuan Yew and Bain's Chairwoman Orit Gadiesh, how consulting has evolved in the era of hybrid work, and his personal passion for cycling. It's all about the payments landscape today as we speak to a pioneer in Singapore's fintech space. Make a guess – this company also has over 650 self-service kiosks across Singapore and handles over 650 million bill payments since its inception in the year 2000. We're talking about bills for schools, government, hospitals, insurance, utilities and more. And users also use the kiosks to pay for their fines or as we call it here in Singaporean terms - “summons”. You might have guessed it by now, our guest is indeed payments provider AXS. AXS is an interesting company to look at because of various reasons surrounding its ownership, the changing business environment and recent partnerships.  In July 2023, DBS Bank had agreed to sell a 77.8 per cent stake in AXS to locally based private equity firm Tower Capital Asia. The move was said to provide AXS with the financial backing needed for its regional expansion and technological upgrades. But what should we know on this front, and what has been done one year since the news emerged? Meanwhile, to cater to changing consumer preferences and the increased need for integrated payments solutions, AXS came up with a newly launched app called AXS Drive to simplify parking payments without the need for physical cards. The question though is – how important is this for AXS financially?  On the partnerships front, the firm also teamed up with Aleta Planet to launch remittance service through UnionPay. But what were the reasons behind the move, and how much money is in this space? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Jeffrey Goh, Group Chief Executive Officer, AXS. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Consumer demand will accelerate the need for security, privacy and regulation. Like zero-knowledge (ZK) where you can prove something is true without revealing all information. And of course, security infrastructure, which is very interesting and important at this current moment, even before the next bull market. For example, one of the companies we invested into Ledger, a digital asset hardware wallet. You basically have an app store interface where you can trade, you can stake. We see a lot of adoption of crypto in not just a retail space because of increased awareness, in the media, and new DeFi applications coming up, but also in the adoption of enterprise space. So a lot of these enterprises will be thinking to themselves, okay, in my treasury, not just do I need to hold USD and other currencies, maybe I need to also hold Bitcoins, or something else. DBS Bank, They're now holding some of this Sandbox Land, but where do they hold it? They can't hold it just in a wallet and then they throw it into some cabinet somewhere. They need to have the right, security hardware. So we believe this, will accelerate the adoption of applications like ledger, which is like a hardware wallet, for both retail and enterprise. So we believe that age-old saying of selling shovels during a gold rush is still very true." - Kelly Choo Fresh out of the studio, Kelly Choo, founding partner from True Global Ventures discusses the state of generative AI and crypto in 2023 and what to look forward in 2024. Perpetual (ASX:PPT) The Perpetual Private Investment research team is accountable for the Responsible Investment related reporting and reviewing of all Perpetual Private portfolios which includes ensuring that all ESG factors are appropriately considered throughout the entire investment process… Furthermore, Perpetual offers thematic investing options that enable clients to align their portfolios with ESG elements that resonate most with their objectives. The global financial services firm is also a signatory to the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) to incorporate ESG issues into all investment analysis and decision making. 3. Transurban Group (ASX:TCL) Operates a diversified suite of Australian toll road assets and toll roads in Northern Virginia in the United States, has also been a popular investment choice among investors and brokers for its ESG commitments. Transurban boasts ESG-related awards and recognition from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency of Australia, Equileap and the Ethibel socially responsible investment register. It's also had an MSCI ESG Rating of AAA for the past five years and it became the first ASX20 company to be validated by the Science Based Targets initiative… UBS and Macquarie both have buy ratings on Transurban and the company's shares are up 16% over the last five years. In the recent high inflationary environment companies like Transurban have been the beneficiaries of rising inflation as it has an inflation-linked revenue stream with annual escalators through toll road concessions being inflation-linked.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2023's Top 10 Ethical Banks Leading the ESG Revolution Next, I have this article on ethical banks around the world, titled 2023's Top 10 Ethical Banks Leading the ESG Revolution. However, the bank's corporate services will continue to operate without interruption. Last December, Taiwan's financial regulatory body approved the acquisition of Citigroup's consumer banking business by DBS Bank, as part of Citigroup's broader strategic withdrawal from consumer banking across several regions, including Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Mexico. DBS Bank is now poised to become the largest foreign bank in Taiwan, following the successful takeover of Citibank's assets and customer base in the country. The transition also impacts existing Citibank credit card holders, who will see a shift in ownership while maintaining their accumulated credit card rewards, cash back, miles, and points. These benefits, held by approximately 2.76 million cardholders, will remain intact even after the transfer to DBS Bank. Importantly, the rights and privileges promised to cardholders under their initial agreement with Citibank will remain unaffected unless the cardholder decides to terminate their card usage. For individuals holding accounts with Citibank, DBS has already initiated the process of transitioning to the new banking landscape. New bank cards have been dispatched to Citibank account holders as of July, and recipients are advised to activate these cards within three months from August 14th. Activation can be completed conveniently through the DBS Digibank app or at physical DBS locations. In essence, this transformation marks a pivotal moment in Taiwan's financial landscape, as Citibank's consumer banking chapter draws to a close and DBS Bank takes the reins, focusing on providing enhanced banking services and experiences to their Taiwanese customers. Reference article: https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4968942

In this episode, I welcome Prof Stijn Viaene from Vlerick Business School, a renowned digital transformation and leadership expert. We delve into the critical role of digital infrastructure in business success and the importance of collaboration across organizational silos for effective digital transformation. The discussion highlights the debate around every company being a tech company and emphasizes the need for business transformation, with digital technology playing a dominant role. My guest shares insights on the four leadership styles (vigilant, voyager, visionary, and vested) crucial for successful digital transformation. We discuss ensuring digital transformation is purpose-driven and that technology complements human skills. We also discuss the importance of focusing on business transformation, aligning objectives with resource allocation, balancing past exploitation with exploring the future, and addressing the talent gap. Together, we examine companies' challenges and pitfalls during digital transformation, such as the need for a forward-looking vision, digital literacy gaps in executive teams, and the importance of routine transformation. The conversation explores the need for businesses to stay ahead of the curve, continuously adapting to industry innovations and disruptions. All were brought to life with examples of successful companies, including DBS Bank, KBC, John Deere, and the City of London, that have introduced new products and services while transforming their ways of working with technology.

According to MIT, the biggest challenges to the innovation process include a lack of an innovation culture, fear of change, lack of ownership and vision, inadequate benchmarking and even impatience. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet or secret formula that can guarantee innovation success. But there are ways to make the odds of success greater. And it is not just new technology or a higher level of investment. I am excited to have Steve Monaghan on the Banking Transformed podcast.
