With the deluge of news about the Trump administration's actions and orders, hosts Andrew Weissmann and Mary McCord zoom out to talk through what seems to be the overarching goal here- to clear out all opposition and have a presidency unbound by law. As former officials at the Justice Department and the FBI, they have a clear-eyed view on the broad swath of firings and how this wrecking ball approach will be litigated in court as challenges mount. Then, Andrew and Mary give some legal context to Trump's attempt to cut off congressional aid, both through the funding freeze that already has several temporary restraining orders, and the ongoing news involving attempts to dismantle USAID by Trump and Musk.Further reading: Here is Mary's piece in Just Security asking the Senate to get answers from Bondi and Patel: From Pardons to Purges: Pressing Questions that Bondi and Patel Must Answer NowAnd this is the article Andrew and Mary referenced in this episode from Adam Cox and Trevor Morrison, also on Just Security: Trump's Dictatorial Theory of Presidential Power – What the Executive Orders, in the Aggregate, Tell UsWant to listen to this show without ads? On this special episode of THE BIG 4-0, Ron and Peter look back at the first SEVEN films from one of our childhood action heroes, Steven Seagal. ABOVE THE LAW (1988), HARD TO KILL (1990), MARKED FOR DEATH (1990), OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991), UNDER SIEGE (1992), his directorial debut ON DEADLY GROUND (1994), and his only theatrical sequel and arguably the end of his run as a major box office draw, UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY (1995). That's a lot of films and a lot of ground to cover, so apologies if we didn't do each film or his entire career justice. There are a lot of interesting discussion points left on the table, many touched on, but not fully explored - such as a deeper dive into his past and wild background claims (CIA and/or mob ties?), excellent/interesting supporting cast members we mention but don't trace the arc of their careers as we normally would (Sharron Stone, Pam Grier, Kelly LeBrock, William Forsythe, Jerry Orbach, Tommy lee Jones, Gary Busy, Erika Eleniak, Michael Cain, John C. McGinley, Joan Chen, Billy Bob Thornton, Eric Bogosian, Evert McGill, Morris Chestnut, and Kathrine Heigel, among others), how he always uses a .45 pistol the way Riggs and McClane always use a Baretta, his badass Bronco in MARKED FOR DEATH, the fact that he looks great - damn near hunky - at 40, no less, in UNDER SIEGE, Bassil Poledouris' awesome ON DEADLY GROUND score, and Seagal's music career (two actually-not-bad blues albums!), post-theatrical-direct-to-DVD period, TV career (A&E's LAWMAN), his fashion, political beliefs, and his legal troubles, both as an accused sexual predator and a falling-out with his producing partner Julius Nasso, which led to a real-life Seagal/mob altercation - but as a focus on just these seven films, how they've aged, and where we each rank them in his filmography, it's an in-depth, fun, and revelatory episode. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back in 1984 next time to burn down the house celebrating STOP MAKING SENSE and PARIS, TEXAS's BIG 4-0s!

Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy with Dr. Victor Davis Hanson, a senior fellow in military history and classics at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and NY Times bestselling author. A brilliant historian and an intellectual giant, Victor Davis Hanson is the author of numerous books including his most recent "The End of Everything: How Wars Descend into Annihilation." Our conversation with Victor Davis Hanson, Professor Emeritus of Classics at California State University, Fresno, focuses on the following issues impacting America and our allies abroad: — The Failures of America's foreign policy under the Biden-Harris Administration and the risk it poses to Americans and trusted allies abroad including Israel. — Concerns raised about the undemocratic nature of the Democratic Party. — How Washington's policies are impacting American families on the economic and security fronts. — What key policies are needed to benefit all Americans —What can we expect in the run-up to the 2024 US Presidential election The End of Everything | Victor Davis Hanson In this “gripping account of catastrophic defeat” (Barry Strauss), a New York Times–bestselling historian charts how and why some societies chose to utterly destroy their foes, and warns that similar wars of obliteration are possible in our time. War can settle disputes, topple tyrants, and bend the trajectory of civilization—sometimes to the breaking point. From Troy to Hiroshima, moments when war has ended in utter annihilation have reverberated through the centuries, signaling the end of political systems, cultures, and epochs. Though much has changed over the millennia, human nature remains the same. Modern societies are not immune from the horror of a war of extinction. In The End of Everything, military historian Victor Davis Hanson narrates a series of sieges and sackings that span the age of antiquity to the conquest of the New World to show how societies descend into barbarism and obliteration. In the stories of Thebes, Carthage, Constantinople, and Tenochtitlan, he depicts war's drama, violence, and folly. Highlighting the naivete that plagued the vanquished and the wrath that justified mass slaughter, Hanson delivers a sobering call to contemporary readers to heed the lessons of obliteration lest we blunder into catastrophe once again. "In The End of Everything, Hanson tells compelling and harrowing stories of how civilizations perished. He helps us consider contemporary affairs in light of that history, think about the unthinkable, and recognize the urgency of trying to prevent our own demise." —H.R. McMaster, author of Battlegrounds Bio | Victor Davis Hanson Victor Davis Hanson is the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution; his focus is classics and military history. Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Hey there, fellow Watchers! Welcome back to another episode of the Born to Watch Podcast. This week, we took a trip down memory lane with the 1988 action flick "Above the Law," which many of us remember fondly from our teenage years. However, revisiting it now, we found that it didn't quite hold up as well as we expected. Let's dive into why this Steven Seagal debut might be better left in the past."Above the Law" was directed by Andrew Davis, who later found success with films like "The Fugitive." This movie marks the debut of Steven Seagal as Nico Toscani, a martial artist turned cop. In our youth, the film's explosive action and gritty storyline seemed groundbreaking. But watching it with fresh eyes, the cracks in its veneer are hard to ignore. The movie opens with a flashback to Nico's Vietnam history, where the CIA recruits him. This backstory is meant to give depth to his character but ends up feeling clichéd and overblown. Fast-forward to present-day Chicago, where Nico, now a police officer, stumbles upon a conspiracy involving corrupt officials and drug trafficking. The plot seemed so gripping years ago but now comes across as convoluted and lacking in real substance. One of the biggest letdowns is the film's action sequences. While Seagal's real-life martial arts skills may be considered at the time to be undeniable, the fight scenes feel repetitive and lack the excitement we remember. The choreography, once thrilling, now seems sluggish and poorly executed. The realism Seagal brought to the action genre in the late '80s has been eclipsed by more dynamic and inventive fight scenes in modern cinema.Seagal's performance as Nico Toscani also falls flat on rewatch. His stoic delivery and limited range of expressions make it hard to connect with his character. What once seemed like a cool, zen-like demeanour now feels more like wooden acting. Seagal's physical presence is still impressive, but it's not enough to carry the movie. The supporting cast, which includes Pam Grier as Nico's partner, Delores ‘ Jacks Jackson and Henry Silva as the villainous Kurt Zagon, does their best with what they're given. Grier's charisma is undeniable, but her character lacks depth and is often relegated to the sidelines. Silva's portrayal of Zagon is menacing, but his role as the rogue CIA operative is a caricature of villainy, lacking nuance. The cinematography in "Above the Law" also doesn't hold up as well as we'd hoped. Chicago's gritty, urban landscape is still a highlight, but the film's overall visual style feels dated. The practical effects and real locations, which once added a sense of realism, now seem low-budget compared to today's standards. Andrew Davis's direction, while competent, lacks the flair that would make the movie visually engaging. The soundtrack, composed by David Michael Frank, does little to elevate the film. The music, which once seemed tense and driving, now feels generic and forgettable. It neither enhances the action nor adds to the emotional weight of the scenes. One of the most disappointing aspects of revisiting "Above the Law" is its socio-political themes. The movie attempts to tackle issues of governmental corruption and abuse of power, but these themes are handled with a heavy hand and lack subtlety. What seemed like a bold commentary in our teenage years now comes across as preachy and superficial. Moreover, "Above the Law" relays a bygone era in action cinema. Steven Seagal's debut may have established him as a new kind of action star, but his style feels outdated. The film set a template that Seagal would follow in many of his future movies, but that template has not aged well. Modern audiences demand more complexity and innovation, which "Above the Law" fails to deliver. In terms of cultural impact, while the film did pave the way for a more realistic portrayal of martial arts in Western cinema, its influence has waned. The once groundbreaking portrayal of Aikido is overshadowed by more dynamic and varied martial arts depictions in contemporary films.Revisiting "Above the Law," it's clear that nostalgia can be a double-edged sword. The film, which once held a special place in our hearts, now feels like a product of its time, struggling to stay relevant in today's action landscape. It's a reminder that not all movies age gracefully, and sometimes, our memories of them are better than the reality. In conclusion, "Above the Law" might have been a thrilling ride back in the late '80s, but it doesn't hold up under the scrutiny of a modern rewatch. Its dated action, flat performances, and heavy-handed themes make it a tough sell for today's audiences. If you're a die-hard Steven Seagal fan or have a soft spot for '80s action flicks, you might still enjoy it. But for the rest of us, it's a reminder that not all cinematic memories are worth revisiting. So, fellow Watchers, if you're thinking about rewatching this one, you might want to think twice. Sometimes, it's better to let our teenage memories stay in the past. Until next time, keep watching and remember that some things are best left above the law.

A martial-arts expert and former CIA agent, Nico Toscani (Steven Seagal) is working as a Chicago cop when a relatively routine drug-trafficking investigation leads to an international conspiracy. Soon Nico and his partner, Delores "Jax" Jackson (Pam Grier), are the targets of mysterious and powerful criminals, but he refuses to back down. As Nico gets deeper into the case, he must contend with an old adversary: corrupt CIA operative Kurt Zagon (Henry Silva). And that is an unnecessarily complicated script written for the greatest Steven Seagal movie ever made. Today on Buzzn The Tower we are gonna talk all things Above The Law. SEASON 2 EPISODE 67: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Dementia J. Trump's lawyers last night filed a 35-page document to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, one or two paragraphs of which asks that court to BAR Judge Tanya Chutkan from reinstating the gag order on him. The rest of it is about how wonderful he is and how much he leads in the primary polls and it sounds like the dialogue they gave Rita Moreno in the last scene of the Jack Nicholson movie “Carnal Knowledge.”  From the first (!) page: “President Trump's uniquely powerful voice has been a fixtue of American political discourse for eight years, and central to the American fabric for decades.” Well, true, like car alarms. Or Herpes. From Item 4, on Page 11: "The Gag Order violates the rights of tens of millions of Americans to receive President Trump's speech: A restriction on President Trump's speech inflicts a reciprocal injury on the rights of over 100 million Americans who listen to him…" Listen to him bout how big and strong he is and how he is better, more beautiful, more powerful, more perfect, more strong, more masculine, more extraordinary, more virile, more domineering, more irresistible and more up in the air and I may have added a little something to the text there. More importantly, but less entertainingly, Judge Chutkan hits the gas, Judge Engoron hits the roof, Judge Cannon does NOT hit the pause button. Chutkan sent a not so subtle sign to the Trump Cult that the Subversion trial will start as planned 123 days from now, and Jack Smith let Cannon know that Trump was playing her like a two dollar banjo. Also, here in New York, the FBI searched the home of the Mayor's top campaign fundraiser and all of a sudden there is a money scandal involving her, him, a construction company, the nation of Turkey, donors who didn't donate, and don't blame me, I voted for the Garbage Commissioner Lady. And back in DC, Lauren Boeber and Marjorie Taylor Greene and Chip Roy in a three-way… war of words. It began with a post by Roy, explaining why he moved to stop the vote to censure Representative Tlaib. Then Barney Rubble sub-tweeted him: “You voted to kick me out of the freedom caucus, but keep CNN wannabe Ken Buck and vaping groping Lauren Boebert…” to which Roy replied “Tell her to go-chase so-called Jewish space lasers if she wants to spend time on that sort of thing.” And Greene responded “Oh shut up Colonel Sanders” and predicted that this would all end with him reciting “powdered wig soliloquies as Americans are marched to the firing squads”and no, I don't get the reference either. Curiously silent through all this was Vaping Groping Lauren Boebert. Sources say she's simply sitting there quietly, trying to get a grip on the situation.  B-Block (26:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD (26:03) Dean Phillips, the Harlan Crow-funded "Democrat" challenging Biden, may have a bigger problem even than Crow. Fox is equally-opportunity hate: Jesse Watters gets suspended for threatening Arab Americans; Mark Levin lies about Wolf Blitzer's grandparents and denies they died in the holocaust. And after an ex-NHL player dies from taking a skate to his neck, how could an NHL team glorify one of their players nearly cutting another player with EACH of his skates? C-Block (35:05) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: There is boredom, there is paranoia, there is fantasy, there is detective fiction, there is self-satirization. Put them all together and you get Thurber's epic "The Lady on 142."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And no one is ABOVE THE LAW, you know unless it's someone doing something for "Democracy".  A movement has started in this country and even some of the Liberal/Marxists are starting to see it. We've said it for a while, the elite are the ones ruining this country. Because they don't have to live with the policies they enact or support. Reports say President Biden doesn't trust some of the Secret Service agents, or their biting incident accounts about his dog Major. Visit betterhelp.com/DUBIOUS today to get 10% off your first month of therapy. In this episode we're going to talk about the new Biden pets, Commander the German Shepherd, Willow the tabby cat and Poppet the unofficial White House rabbit, but also about Major and the late Champ Biden and how they were turned into political weapons and attacked by right wing groups, in court and on live TV. And we have some “barking news”: president Zelensky, Olena Zelenska, and their children have more than just two dogs: they also have a hamster and a cat. If you like our content, please become a patron. Major Biden is the only pet in history whose less than perfect behavior was considered reason enough to "file a FOIA lawsuit against the United Stated Department of Homeland Security for records of communication between Secret Service officials assigned to the White House regarding the Biden family dogs." One's pets and children are/should be off limits in politics, even if the politics of their humans is not your cup of tea. On that note, thanks to President Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush for adopting puppy Freddy Bush from the SPCA of Texas and rescuing kitty Bernadette from the side of the road and giving them a wonderful, spoiled life, along with Bob, the second Bush cat. We discuss the attack against a 13 year old dog, Champ, by a Newsmax host. Gregg Kelly and two guests presented agreed on live TV that Champ “is dirty, looks rough, disheveled, like a junkyard dog.” This attack was connected to senator Ted Cruz who fled to Cancun during the 2021 Texas freeze, leaving his poodle Snowflake alone in a house with no electricity and no heat. Texas monthly editor Michael Hardy brought this fact to light and the Twitter account The Oval Pawffice spread the Snowflake news. Newsmax attacked this account while lying to their viewers, stating the account belonged to Jen Psaki. Newsmax viewers mass reported the account until the Twitter algorithm banned it. But thanks to the adorable fox red Labrador retriever Gipper, Juris Dog-tor at Clare Locke, a boutique law firm, The Oval Pawffice was reinstated in 24 hours. Gipper wrote an official letter to Twitter's Legal Counsel making it clear that The Oval Pawffice didn't break any rules. This letter is a work of art, it's written in doggo, Gipper signed it with his own paw print. 1, 2 Next: fun stories about FDR's dog Major, Pete Roosevelt, Barney Bush, Juno and Satan Adams, parrot Poll Jackson, Old Ike the Woodrow Wilson ram and Rebecca Coolidge the racoon. VIDEO VAGABOND has triumphantly returned with Season 2 of your favorite podcast that delves into action movies from the 80s and 90s! We are doing things a little differently this year/season, as we have categorized our selections into what we call ACTION BLOCKS! We choose one Actor/Director/Martial Arts Discipline and we go over 4 straight action movies in a row to create an ACTION BLOCK. We were heavily inspired by the Season 1's CRAIG R. BAXLEY ACTION TRILOGY. Our first selection is none other than the 6th degree Aikido black belt himself, the one and only Steven Seagal! We will be going over his first movie, ABOVE THE LAW (1988). This film acts as a primer for all of his other films that he made, as Steven Seagal went from aN instructor at a struggling dojo to an action star overnight, as super-agent Michael Ovitz thought he could make a star out of anybody. He was right. We hope you enjoy Season 2 and we're super-psyched to get back at it. Let's fucking go!"You may be above the law...but you ain't above MINE!"

The FBI is no stranger to scandal within the organization and they are also not strangers to making those scandals go away. In this episode, we hear about a many different instances of sexual impropriety committed by FBI agents that have been, effectively, covered up. Instead of people losing pensions and jobs, they are simple re-shuffled and moved to different offices. Now however, the FBI is being called out by more than a few people who say that they were sexually harassed/abused by agents, and the FBI leadership did nothing about it. Our Race Hustlers series is devoted to Fraudsters who appropriate various identities for their own financial gain. In this case, our Fraudster is Steven Seagal and his identities are kaleidoscopic–he's "basically Japanese," a CIA agent, a  Navy Seal, an expert marksman, a bonafide cop, and ... maybe Black? According to Seagal, he's everything but Jewish. Today we're tracking how bad acting–on and off the stage–lent Seagal the legitimacy to become a blockbuster star, even when consistently met with media skepticism.Thank you to Rob from McDojoLife for joining us on the show as our martial arts expert. As promised – here is the amazing 1993 Spy Magazine Expose that we drew from in the episode in case you want to read it in its entirety. It's definitely worth it.

A FOIA lawsuit was filed against the Secret Service regarding the Biden dogs, Champ and Major. If you like our content, please subscribe to our premium episodes.
