Dr. Chris Graham is an associate professor at South Dakota State University. He's also the manager of the West River Research Farm near Sturgis, South Dakota. At that facility they focus a lot on regenerative agriculture, including doing a lot of work with peas and other pulses to extend crop rotations in that semi-arid region in the western part of the state. Graham shares about pulse production in South Dakota, focusing mostly on field peas. He also shares some of the complexities of nitrogen fixation, including what it might look like to have farm-specific microbial inoculant mixes in the future. “When you look at the growth of wheat, generally the yield is set first and then the protein is made later in its life cycle. And so we often see peas, obviously they're harvested and they start to decay, and that slow decay releases nitrogen later in the wheat growing season. And so we often see a protein bump with wheat following peas.” - Dr. Chris GrahamWhile there isn't a lot of acreage in pulses in South Dakota yet, Graham calls field peas the “nickel slots” of the pulses. In other words, a great place to start incorporating them into a rotation with a low barrier to entry. He highlights that your soil nitrogen content will likely not increase but your input needs may decrease when pulses are used.“It's still nitrogen that you didn't have to apply and it's also nitrogen that the plant did not necessarily take up from the soil. And so it's conserving some of that nitrogen that's being made available just on that baseline level. ” - Dr. Chris GrahamThis Week on Growing Pulse Crops:Meet Dr. Chris Graham, an associate professor at South Dakota State University and the manager of the West River Research Farm near Sturgis, South DakotaExplore the potential use of pulse crops in rotations in South DakotaDiscover the niche pulses can fill in rotation as a broadleaf crop capable of nitrogen fixationVisit Dr. Graham's webpage here.Growing Pulse Crops is produced by Dr. Audrey Kalil and hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

On April 27, writer Christopher Graham, delivered a lecture about his book Faith, Race, and the Lost Cause: Confessions of a Southern Church. When a young man enamored with Confederate iconography murdered worshipers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston in 2015, the rector at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond called his congregation to examine its own racial history and former identity as the “Church of the Confederacy.” St. Paul's, in downtown Richmond, had been the home to wealthy and influential Virginians, and during the Civil War had hosted Confederate leaders, including Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. The people of St. Paul's reveled in the notoriety and built its postwar identity around its Confederate connections. This book is a result of a congregational self-study, and chronicles how this church understood Christian teachings and practice regarding race relations from the 1840s to our present moment. Along the way, it reveals a few unexpected moments in the evolution of a Lost Cause institution, while contemplating the ways that people change over time and use historical imagination to manifest a present reality. In the end, we learn reasons for hope and sobering lessons for those who wish to do the right thing. Christopher Graham is a historian, museum curator, and member of St. Paul's. He is the author of Faith, Race, and the Lost Cause: Confessions of a Southern Church. The content and opinions expressed in these presentations are solely those of the speaker and not necessarily of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

YUSUF HAWKINS: STORM OVER BROOKLYN, directed by Muta’Ali Muhammad (“Life’s Essentials with Ruby Dee”) and debuting on HBO Wednesday, August 12 (9:00-10:40 p.m. ET/PT), tells the story of Yusuf Hawkins, a black teenager who was murdered in 1989 by a group of young white men in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Yusuf Hawkins’ death and the official response to it sparked outrage in New York, unleashing a torrent of racial tension and spurring tireless civil rights activism that exposed deep racial prejudices and inequities which continue to plague the country today. Over 30 years later, New Yorkers, including Yusuf’s family and friends, reflect on the tragedy and the subsequent fight for justice that inspired and divided New York City. YUSUF HAWKINS: STORM OVER BROOKLYN utilizes archival footage and photos, witness statements, news footage, in addition to candid interviews with Yusuf’s mother, Diane; brothers, Freddy and Amir; cousins, Darlene and Felicia Brown; and friend Christopher Graham and the two friends with him during the attack, Luther Sylvester and Bensonhurst native Russell Gibbons. A harrowing account of an immutable part of the city’s history, and of a family coping with profound grief deepened by injustice, YUSUF HAWKINS: STORM OVER BROOKLYN details how the senseless murder that shook the foundation of the city shed light on deep racial divisions and inequity. Yusuf’s death and the demands of his family and community had political ramifications that contributed to the ousting of New York Mayor Ed Koch in favor of David Dinkins, the city’s first and only black Mayor. Director Muta’Ali Muhammad joins us to talk about how the murder of Yusuf Hawkins pulled back the curtain on the racism, both past a present can rear its head anywhere in America, even in a city thought to be a bastion of racial tolerance. Visit http://ShannonGraham.com/contact if you are a highly committed leader who is ready for quantum leaps in your personal and professional growth. Let's talk.I recently talked with my brother, Christopher Graham. He is quite frankly one of the brightest guys that I know. He graduated from Emmanuel College with a degree in International Relations and Philosophy. The topic that day was essentially how technology is empowering mankind and the collective consciousness. The recent issue that the people Hong Kong were experiencing, made him think about how technology allows people all around the globe to communicate with each other through video, through Twitter, or through any sort of social media. We're able to watch videos and literally hear from these protesters. And that in itself is a great example of how technology is allowing people to become more conscious of their ability to fight for their rights. Moreover, Christopher thinks that social media, at least at this point in time, is sometimes more objective than news. He says it’s because you have an individual sharing their experience with the world. It's unfiltered. He believes that social media and with the advancements of technology and how relatively easy it is today for people to access social media, allows the individual to tell their story to each other. It empowers each other to tell that story. Meanwhile, I believe a collective consciousness is only as good as the individual consciousness. An individual who sees someone else having a voice purely as a function of this piece of technology has the opportunity to be inspired by that, and do that themselves. It's a little bit of this domino effect of when someone sees someone else talking about a subject that they're very passionate about, and it gives them the kind of courage to “pick up the microphone, vocalize, and have a voice for themselves.” Christopher and I also agreed that the youth is becoming a formidable agent for change. Suffering is a universal language that everyone understands. If there's a Twitter video today that you see from kids in Australia that were all protesting together to create climate change, every kid in the world can relate to that. You don't have to understand English, to understand that kids all over the world understand that urge for protests to change the world, and to change the way politics and economics are affecting our climate. Connecting this topic to leadership in the business standpoint, Christopher noted that sometimes, leaders become leaders and they don't even expect to become a leader. Leaders are people who inspire and enact courage within others that they did not know was there. Leaders have such a level of courage that they may not even be aware of how much they're influencing others. He thinks that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are creating a lot of inspiration for younger entrepreneurs and people, who are having that drive to think outside the box and create something new. He believes that similarly with technology leaders in the business world, Bezos and Musk understand the power of social media. They understand how far and how vast their reach can be with social media, and how many eyes and ears can see what they're doing and how they're changing the world. Christopher added that sometimes, people can take things the wrong way. Sometimes kids can see certain people in the spotlight and take it in a negative way. We agreed that with great power, comes great responsibility - especially as we advanced in social media and our ability to expose ourselves to thousands, if not millions, of people within minutes. For me, technology is enhancing the collective consciousness. There's no question about it completely. From a leadership standpoint, what that means is the necessity to up-level your standard of excellence, so that what is getting transmuted to the masses is something that has a high probability of affecting people in a positive and powerful way. Christopher closed the discussion by saying that despite being relative with every individual, as long as we're aware of the impact we have on others and the responsibility, we can create something really powerful and positive. He believes that's how we create change and how we can help each other move forward and, help this world stay together. If you are a visionary leader who wants to quantum leap your impact and leave a legacy of achieving the impossible, I am here and the world is waiting. Worried Facebook-users who have deleted their accounts because of the Cambridge Analytica scandal have been discovering that the social network held even more data about them than they had feared: complete records of their phone calls and text messages, contacts from their address books, appointments from their calendars, reminders of their friends' birthdays... It is naïve to suggest that we can ever again be truly private individuals, however much we might like to be, but is the harvesting of our personal information getting out of hand? The moral issue is not just about privacy - whether these companies should have such information about us in the first place - but is also about the ways in which it can be used. Is it right to divide up the population into sub-groups, without their knowledge, so they can be precisely targeted with advertisements and political propaganda? "Shocking!" say some newspaper pundits. "It's what advertisers and campaigners have always done," say others. What, if anything, should be done about it? Harsher punishments? Stricter regulation? Is it the moral duty of companies to be more transparent, beyond the small-print 'Terms and Conditions' that hardly anyone reads or understands? Cheerleaders for Big Data point to its potential to transform our lives, improving health and education. Its detractors say the abuse of personal information is nothing less than a threat to democracy. And there are some who believe both positions are overstated and who worry that we have lost faith in the public's ability to make its own judgments. Witnesses are Silkie Carlo, Christopher Graham, Timandra Harkness and Katz Kiely. Producer: Dan Tierney.

There are more developments in the Leveson story this week. As Oliver Letwin works on a draft Royal Charter, newspaper publishers meet to agree their own new road map and the Lords discuss regulation, Hacked Off's put out its own draft bill and the Information Commissioner's released his response to Leveson. Steve Hewlett hears from Hugh Tomlinson QC who's behind the Hacked Off bill and from Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner. Newspapers this week have reported the commissioner warning about the potentially "chilling effects" on investigative journalism if the Leveson recommendations are implemented in full. Channel 4 is yet to renew its deal with Group M, which buys around £250m of advertising from the broadcaster each year. There's disagreement over where Channel 4 is still as valuable to advertisers as it has been. Mathew Horsman of Mediatique media consultants and Lisa Campbell of Broadcast magazine look at the underlying performance and the overall strength of the broadcaster's programmes.
