The 7th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Cottonbalers," is one of the oldest units in the U.S. Army, originally formed in 1812. It has fought in nearly every major American conflict, including the Civil War, both World Wars, Korea, and Iraq. Renowned for its bravery and deep traditions, the regiment remains an active combat unit to this day. I'm joined by Professor John McManus, whose 2009 book American Courage, American Carnage chronicles the unit's remarkable history. During World War II, the 7th landed in North Africa as part of Operation Torch, fought through Sicily and Italy, stormed the beaches of Southern France in Operation Dragoon, and ended the war as the first American unit to reach Hitler's mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden. The regiment also takes centre stage in the upcoming computer game Burden of Command, where John serves as the historical advisor. //The Wire//2300Z April 30, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: UKRAINE REJECTS CEASEFIRE OFFER. TEXAS HOUSE PASSES SPEECH CRIME BILL. WHITE POWDER FOUND IN ENVELOPE MAILED TO NY CRIMINAL COURT, EMERGENCY RESPONSE ONGOING.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-Ukraine: Zelenskyy has rejected the ceasefire proposal announced by Russia. Various Ukrainian media outlets have stated that the reason for the rejection is that Ukraine wants to pursue a 30-day ceasefire instead of the 72-hour cessation of hostilities announced by Russia.Southern Europe: Most of the electrical outages throughout the continent have subsided as investigations into the cause have continued. So far, no official cause for the outage has been released. -HomeFront-Wisconsin: The state Supreme Court has suspended Judge Hannah Dugan from the bench for her role in aiding and abetting the escape of an illegal immigrant from her courtroom.Texas: House Bill 366 passed in the House last night. This bill is highly-controversial as it contains vague language that under many circumstances bans political memes and media that does not explicitly have a government-approved warning disclaimer. The bill now heads to the Senate for a vote.Texas: The bond for Solomon Weldekeal-Araya has been reduced from $1.2 million to $7,000 by a Travis County judge. Weldekeal-Araya was arrested in March for causing a pileup on I-35 that killed 5x people and injured 11x.New York: This afternoon an envelope filled with an unidentified white powder was mailed to the New York Criminal Court. Upon the discovery of the mysterious substance, 7x people were hospitalized out of an abundance of caution.AC: As this is a developing story at the time of this report, there are very few details that are confirmed. However, considering the context of the increased risks of terrorism around the nation, an abundance of caution would be wise to adhere to.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the power outage in Spain, most European media groups are sticking with the story that some kind of electromagnetic phenomenon caused the outage. This is almost certainly a fabrication. No abnormal electromagnetic interference was reported throughout the whole continent on the day of the outage. Both NASA and ESA solar weather forecasts confirmed no abnormal sunspots or anything out of the ordinary. No watches or warnings of impending solar weather were issued that day either. None of the smaller electrical interconnects throughout the continent experienced any sort of variation whatsoever. If this was a global electromagnetic interference situation, the Earth must have recognized international land borders, since Spain and Portugal were pretty much the only nations affected. (Southern France's power came back on only after a few minutes in some cases.) Spain's own state-sponsored meteorology agency (AEMET) stated directly that "No unusual meteorological or atmospheric phenomena were detected in Spain on April 28th, nor were there any sudden temperature fluctuations at our network of weather stations".In Texas, there is already a substantial amount of information manipulation regarding HB366. Supporters of the bill state that it is intended to stop political candidates from memeing each other. This is still very obviously unconstitutional, but this appears to be the goal. The bigger problem (where this bill applies to most people, not just political candidates) is that this bill also applies to anyone who uses a meme in a form of employment whereby at least $100 is earned. In short, it seems as though Texas has re-defined what is considered to be "political advertising" in such a way as to be an extremely broad definition.Opponents of the bill have stated that this is a textbook case of illegal censorship, and is one of the most blatant attacks on free speech

This intriguing 2022 novel by Nikki Erlick focuses on the age-old question of how much time one has to live. The tale begins when everyone in the world over 22 years of age receives a small wooden box with the message: The measure of your life lives within. Every person found a piece of string in the box correlating to how long they will live. We follow the lives of eight New Yorkers and the repercussions of the choices they make based on their string length. Following the theme of the wooden box, we try a boxed white wine from La Petite Frog Picpoul out of Southern France. It proved to be a crisp, tasty wine that we enjoy while learning about the aspects of boxed wine.

The Brough Superior, a classic British motorcycle designed by George Brough in 1919 and manufactured in Nottingham, was of such high quality that it was dubbed the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles. One famous customer, T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), owned eight and died in 1935 from injuries sustained when he crashed number seven. The design was beautiful and practical, and a sidecar was often added. Although the factory closed after the Second World War, enthusiasts have ensured the name survives. In 2004, around 1,000 original Brough Superior motorcycles still existed. The brand is regularly seen in period movies and television series, as well as in classic bike shows, hill climbs, and motor races. In 2014 the Brough Superior brand was purchased by a Jersey-registered corporation, which engaged Thierry Henriette to create a Brough Superior factory in St Jean, Southern France, near the aerospace capital of Toulouse. The factory produces luxury motorcycles at the pinnacle of exclusivity and distinction. Although production is in France, the British design spirit has been maintained through a joint venture with Aston Martin to create the AMB 001 Pro, a limited-edition, high-performance motorcycle. To support the R&D process, bringing in-house the manufacture of some complex prismatic components was necessary. A Hurco VMX42SRTi 5-axis VMC was chosen due to its ability to achieve the accuracy and surface finish required. It can also accept 3D models directly into the proprietary WinMax control, renowned for its suitability for high-mix, low-volume production. Additionally, and most importantly, it enabled the manufacturer to go even further in customising motorcycles for its discerning clientele, offering different machining finishes and engraving possibilities and assuring the impeccable quality of parts. The VMC also supports CNC machining of a new, dual-cylinder, 997cc engine for the AMB 001 Pro, a high-performance, turbocharged, track-only motorcycle born from a collaboration between Aston Martin and Brough Superior. It draws inspiration from Aston Martin's Valkyrie AMR Pro hypercar, which has a power-to-weight ratio comparable to a Formula One car. Manufactured from solid aluminium billet, the engine is lighter, stiffer and more powerful than in previous Brough Superior bikes. In addition to powering the AMB 001 Pro, it has been engineered to fit perfectly into contemporary versions of the classic Lawrence and Dagger motorcycles. Most metal removal and finishing are completed in a single set-up on the Hurco VMX42SRTi.

Bandol is arguably the most important appellation in Provence at the southeastern tip of France. Although it makes white, this very small region is known for its ageworthy reds and rosés made mainly of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Cinsault.   In this show I review the long history of Bandol from the Greeks to the real estate agents of today, and talk about the various terroirs in this appellation. I talk about the grapes, why Mourvedre makes such a big difference in allowing the reds and rosés to age, and some ideas of flavors, producers, and how long to age these wines. From the Rosés of Southern France by Liz Gabay, MW and Ben Bernheim   Since these are rosés that can age and ones that have more robust flavors, I wanted to do this show in the winter. I think it's good for us to think about different ways to look at pink wine, especially high-quality pink wine! Welcome to Season 13 Episode 43 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa talks with former touring pro and current WTA coach of Marta Kostyuk, Sandra Zaniewska. Be sure to check out the video version of this episode for a peek at Marta's 6-month-old Maltipoo puppy named Mandar! Sandra, a professional tennis coach born in Warsaw, Poland and based in Southern France, shared her journey into coaching and her coaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of understanding and nurturing the growth of junior tennis players. She also discussed the challenges and importance of guiding parents through the journey of raising a junior tennis player, and the need for collaboration and sharing experiences among coaches.  Sandra started playing tennis at age 10 and became a professional player, reaching a singles high ranking of 142. After retiring at 26, she began coaching and found it to be a fulfilling experience. Sandra credits her success to her willingness to learn from other experienced coaches and her ability to adapt to each player's unique needs. She emphasized the importance of unlearning previous coaching methods when working with a new player, a lesson she learned from Patrick Mouratoglou. She went on to discuss the importance of understanding and nurturing the growth of junior tennis players, beyond just their technical skills. She emphasized the role of a coach in guiding players to develop their natural strengths and style of play, rather than trying to mold them into a specific type. Sandra shared her personal experience as a player, highlighting the confusion and lack of confidence she faced when trying to conform to a typical style of play. She concluded that it's crucial for coaches to see players with fresh eyes and create training plans based on their unique abilities and potential. Sandra emphasized the need for coaches to be proactive and focus on being the best coach for their players, rather than fearing losing them. She also shared her experiences of writing books, with her first book, "Coaching 2.0: How to Develop Great Female Players on and off the Court," focusing on the connection with players and the mental aspect of coaching. Her second book, "Raising Champions: The Ultimate Guide for Tennis Parents," was born out of her role as a high-level director at the Mouratoglou Academy, where she was responsible for scouting and coaching top players. Episode 442 - Steve Hoffman - A Season For That - Lost and Found in the Other Southern FranceIn this poignant, delicious memoir, American tax preparer and food writer Steve Hoffman tells the story of how he and his family move to the French countryside, where the locals upend everything he knows about food, wine, and learning how to belong.Steve Hoffman is a perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France, more specifically with the idea of France. To follow that love, he and his family move, nearly at random, to the small, rural, scratchy-hot village of Autignac in the south of the country, and he immediately thinks he's made a terrible mistake. Life here is not holding your cigarette chest-high while walking to the café and pulling off the trick of pretending to be Parisian, it's getting into fights with your wife because you won't break character and introduce your very American family to the locals, who can smell you and your perfect city-French from a mile away.https://sjrhoffman.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

In the daily grind of work under capitalism, I'm sure I'm not alone for dreaming of something more to life. Usually, this takes the shape of going somewhere new in the world on vacation or picking up a new language and imagining what life would look like if you lived in that country and spoke that language with ease. For my guest today, this dream became a concrete and humbling reality. Tax preparer and food writer Steve Hoffman details his journey with his family in his beautiful new memoir, A Season for That: Lost and Found In The Other Southern France.   Steve is a French speaker and shameless Francophile who tirelessly works in his memoir to unearth the reality of his family's gradual acceptance into a tiny winemaking village in the Languedoc region of southern France. His writing has won multiple awards, including the 2019 James Beard MFK Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. He has been published in Food & Wine, The Washington Post, The Minneapolis Star Tribune, and Artful Living magazine.  In our conversation today, Steve shares some of the lessons he picked up about the unique winemaking and culinary traditions he experienced in Languedoc-Rousillon region, the role that food and ingredients played in helping his family become accepted in the village, the values of home cooking versus French cooking, and what it took as a food writer to get to a point with his memoir where he could approach his family's story with an honesty and earnestness I've not seen the likes of in other food memoirs. Sequoia National Park is largely designated as wilderness. That complicates efforts to protect its iconic trees from worsening wildfires. Also, archaeologists keep finding older and older cave art. Here's what it could tell us about how humans evolved over time.Protecting Sequoias From Wildfire Raises Tricky QuestionsSequoia National Park in California is known for its towering, iconic sequoia trees, some of which are thought to be thousands of years old. Severe wildfires fueled by climate change and a long history of fire suppression have put these trees at risk. One solution to this problem is to plant new sequoias. But an interesting debate has sparked between those in favor of this and those against it.The vast majority of the park is officially considered “wilderness,” a federal designation that describes an area “untrammeled by man.” This concept of “untrammeled” has become more complicated in the age of climate change: Some people argue that it means humans shouldn't intervene, even when the ecosystem is changing because of human-made climate change.Guest host Maggie Koerth speaks with Marissa Ortega-Welch, host and producer of the “How Wild” podcast from KALW and NPR. The first episode of this podcast, “Untrammeled,” highlights this debate. What Newly Discovered Cave Art Tells Us About Human CreativityIn July, researchers discovered the oldest known cave art. Stephanie here. I welcome Mary DeMuth again on the show, to talk about all the things we didn't get to talk about when she came on the first time. We talk about deep things – church hurt, forgiveness, compassion, multifaceted journeys deep into the heart of God. We talk about daring to start a new story when it feels too late. Mary is here to tell us, it's never too late to dream again, to trust God to write a new story out of the ashes of the old one. I love her for it. Mary loves Jesus. And really that's the most important thing about her. It's not writing or speaking or praying or mommying or any other -ing you can find. She flat out loves Him. Why? Because he has utterly, truly, completely re-storied her. See her testimony below. She has three adult children, and she's been married to Patrick for 33 years now. Mary counts those relationships as the most important people in her life. In the mid 2000s, their family helped plant a church in Southern France–a difficult, but amazing experience. In her spare (ha!) time, she loves to cook, run, garden, decorate, paint, and do interior design. She's been writing for 30+ years–half of them in obscurity. She mentored many writers during that time, and continues to do so through the Rockwall Christian Writers Group and some of her  instructional books. Since then she has written over 45 books, translated into five languages. You can see a listing of all her books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, CBD, Lifeway and Parable. Mary pioneered a literary agency in 2022, Mary DeMuth Literary, where she shepherds writers toward traditional publishing. She currently lives in North Texas, serves in my local church alongside her husband, and she's had the privilege of speaking around the world in places like Johannesburg, Monaco, Geneva, Munich, Port-au-Prince, Nice and Florence. Although her past story is difficult, her current story leaks adventure. Not only has Mary been restored and restoried, but she longs to see the same for you. You no longer have to live haunted. She believes your new story starts today. Carl Bard wrote, “Though no one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.” Paul reminds us of this important truth: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT). Living in retrospect is a bad idea. It's time to heal, be set free, and find the new story God has for you. Mary has experienced God turning her storm into a story, moving her from a bitter story into a bigger one. Won't you join her on the adventure? https://www.marydemuth.com/ Mary's First Person Narrative:  My story is full of deep wounds. When I was five, the cane-shaking lady next door sprayed her blackberry bushes with poison so the neighborhood kids wouldn't eat the renegade berries that spilled over her fence into the common alley. I didn't understand that as I popped a huge handful into my mouth. “You're going to die! You're going to die!” she screamed at me after seeing my purple stained cheeks. I shook and cried, flailing myself on my bed. I obviously lived, but the fear of death took root in my heart. That same year, I faced more devastation. Neighborhood boys sexually assaulted me. As a result, I felt dirty, unwanted, uncared for, and quite alone. At ten years old, my world crumbled again when my biological father died. He'd been my hero, so his sudden, tragic loss sent me reeling. My fear of death magnified. A giant hole opened up in me–a daddy-shaped hole that sat unfilled. It seemed to grow every year, and the loneliness I felt without him sometimes felt stifling. Too much. Too hard. Too much grief for a girl ten years old. I fought my emotions, tried to wrangle them into submission. But they weren't easily managed. They stayed deep inside and erupted when I didn't want them to. I spent my sixth grade year making a decision. I would be a success. I would fill my great big hole with academic prowess. So I worked hard. From that point on, I would get an A in every subject I took. But I still missed my father, and I clung to my stepdad and mom, hoping they wouldn't die, all the while fearing death would nab me. During junior high, life felt unbearable and I considered killing myself--even though I feared death. My mom's marriage to my stepdad disintegrated and I frequently broke down at school, wracked with tears. A counselor gave me a hall pass so I could leave class at any time and cry, cry, cry to my heart's discontent. I didn't know why I was on this earth. What could possibly be my purpose? Skinny (scrawny, really) and awkward, I longed for a boyfriend to fill that aching need, but few came, and when a boy would show his interest, I would freak out and run the other way. If a boy tried to kiss me, I would break up, not able to cope with the fear that he would do far more. I wanted love and affection, but my fear pushed any semblance of that away. I continued down the road to academic success, sang solos, and tried to fill my heart up with school. But the empty part of me remained. Then came hope! My freshman year of high school, a friend invited me to Young Life. Every time the speaker said, “Jesus,” my heart pounded. The leader ended one of his talks by asking, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?” (Matthew 8:27) The question echoed through my mind throughout the summer before my sophomore year. By the time I went to a Young Life weekend camp in the fall of that next school year, my heart longed to know this Jesus. When the camp speaker spoke of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, I knew I wanted to follow Him the rest of my life. I sat under an evergreen tree that evening and looked up into the star-pocked night, searching for the face of God. In that moment I gave Him my heart, life, past, pains, countless tears, and wounds of my childhood to the Father who would never leave me, to the God who conquered death. I've sought after him ever since. I didn't instantly heal, though. The road back to a re-storied, freedom-infused life has been long and tenuous. I've still dealt with a Daddy hole, but God is good to bring wholeness in those empty parts. I've been learning how to make Jesus my everything, letting Him fill everything, so I no longer have to chase lesser things. I wrote about that journey in Everything. The healing came when I chose to no longer be silent. When I decided it was time to tell my story, ask for prayer, and trust God to heal me. A life of secrets seldom heals. Today I'm still learning how to live free from the past, to rejoice in the great right now. What used to be a shameful, scary story is now my testimony of a re-storied life. I've written about it in my memoir, Thin Places. And I've chronicled my journey to healing after sexual abuse in Not Marked: Finding Hope and Healing after Sexual Abuse. I'm no longer the little girl who shuddered at the thought of death, post-berry-eating. I'm not the girl who experienced repeated rape at five. I'm not the daughter who lost a father to the specter of death. I'm not the teenager bent on destroying herself. I'm not the look-at-me-notice-me young adult who needed success to be her god. I'm simply Mary, loved wildly by Jesus. And my greatest desire and joy is to share that message of hope with you, to see you experience the re-storied life Jesus wants to give you. My prayer for you? That through my printed and spoken messages you'll encounter this same Jesus who can take your deepest wounds, and darkest trials, and re-story them into impossible joy. I'm a walking testimony to the healing grace of God. I embody and delight in this verse: “Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world's eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God” (1 Corinthians 1: 26-29, NLT). I was powerless, despised, counted as nothing and unimportant. But God saw differently. He rescued me. He knew that scared little girl would someday grow up and tell her story of redemption. I'm utterly and profoundly grateful to my dear, dear Jesus who set me free from the fear of death and filled up my heart. Stephanie Rousselle interviews Mary DeMuth about her experiences in France. Mary shares insights into her cultural immersion, spiritual challenges, and the nuances of living and ministering in France. Mary's experiences in France offer actionable lessons about faith, culture, and the power of embracing conversational nuances that have unfortunately gone missing in much of the American landscape these days. As she shares her journey, she inspired Stephanie to approach challenges with open hearts, seek delight in unexpected places, and nurture meaningful interactions in a diverse world. Her insights invite reflection and introspection, prioritizing empathy, patience, and understanding in the pursuit of a multi-faceted faith experience for the glory of God in Christ Jesus! Mary recounts her journey of embracing the French language and culture. Having studied French in high school and pursued a minor in college, her foundation was laid for the experiences that lay ahead. Her venture into France wasn't just a tourist endeavor but stemmed from her faith and calling to ministry. The decision to move from the US to France, as church planters, unraveled a myriad of cultural, spiritual, and personal challenges. Good thing she and her family were deeply rooted in Christ! Mary's experiences shed light on the complexity of cross-cultural ministry. Living in Southern France, she discovered the subtleties of the French evangelical landscape, leading her to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that come with sharing the Gospel in a foreign context. As Mary narrates her time in France, vivid experiences of cultural shock and adaptation surface. She candidly recalls the clash of cultures, highlighting the surprising source of her greatest culture shock, from Seattle to East Texas – not France! Mary's reflections unveil the shifting landscapes of cultural adaptation, showing the nuances of societal pressures and expectations. Her insights into the French 'joie de vivre' and approach to disagreements reveal the vibrant and diverse nature of French culture, something she is chagrined to find lacking in current day US. Mary shares how her experiences in France reshaped her perspective on faith, culture, and human interaction. Her outlook is rooted in empathy, patience, and the cultivation of meaningful conversations. She addresses the complexities of re-entry into the US, reflecting on the jarring contrast her family faced upon returning, where the depth of dedication to Christ seemed to falter in the abundance of cultural Christianity. Mary's experiences and insights serve as a guide for those embarking on their own journey. She articulates the importance of cultivating empathy, seeking delight, and engaging in nuanced conversations. Recognizing the value of foreign experiences and their impact on our faith, she highlights the need for understanding and embracing differences. Mary concludes the interview with a heartfelt prayer for those stepping into new and unfamiliar cultural landscapes. Her prayer resonates with hope, protection, and an open-hearted approach to discovering God's beauty in different spaces. CONNECT WITH MARY DEMUTH: There is so much more to discuss with Mary! 3000 light years from Earth, a white dwarf star called T Coronae Borealis is on the brink of a “once-in-a-lifetime” explosion. Astrophysicist Bradley Schaefer is enthusiastic about the bright star set to appear in the night sky in the coming months. Professor Irving Weissman has been researching ways to restore youth using mouse models for decades. He has sewn old and young mice together to join their circulatory systems and has found that giving old mice blood from younger mice reverses some signs of ageing. In his group's paper, the use of an antibody-based therapy has been shown to restore a declining immune system in ageing mice. Not quite the fountain of youth but potentially a key step in halting many age-related diseases. Roland gets the details from Irving and first-author Dr Jason Ross. And, in the small town of Cabrières in Southern France, producer Ella Hubber goes on the hunt for some 480-million-year-old fossils with part-time fossil prospectors Eric and Sylvie Monceret. Their latest excavation site is a gold mine of rare, soft-bodied fossils from the period during a time when this part of France was underwater. And at the South Pole.
