WON DESPITE THE REF! | Aston Villa 1-3 Newcastle United | FA Cup ReactionWhat a chaotic night at Villa Park! Newcastle United marched into the FA Cup fifth round with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, but the real story was the shocking refereeing. With no VAR in operation for this fourth-round tie, the Magpies had to overcome both the opposition and a string of bizarre officiating decisions to get the job done. The Offside Opener: Aston Villa took the lead in the 14th minute when Tammy Abraham swept home a free-kick. Replays clearly showed he was offside, but without VAR to intervene, the goal stood. The Digne Incidents: Lucas Digne somehow escaped a red card for a high, studs-up challenge on Jacob Murphy. Later, Digne blatantly handled the ball well inside his own penalty area, but referee Chris Kavanagh inexplicably awarded a free-kick outside the box instead of a penalty.Bizot Sees Red: The momentum finally shifted right before half-time when Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot was shown a straight red card for a wild, rushing foul on Jacob Murphy.Tonali & Woltemade to the Rescue: Newcastle made the extra man count in the second half. Sandro Tonali scored a brilliant brace in the 63rd and 76th minutes to flip the game on its head. Nick Woltemade then sealed the 3-1 win in the 88th minute, celebrating his 24th birthday in style.Up Next: Champions League Nights in Baku! There's no time to rest as the lads are immediately back in European action.Fixture: Qarabağ FK vs. Newcastle UnitedThis will be a tricky away environment for Eddie Howe's side, but Newcastle are the clear favorites. While Qarabağ can be dangerous going forward—having scored 33 goals across 20 Champions League matches this season—the Azeri champions are incredibly vulnerable at the back. They have conceded 41 goals in those same European fixtures and have struggled against high-level opposition. If Newcastle can handle the long travel and the atmosphere, there should be plenty of away goals up for grabs!----------------------CLICK THE LINK TO JOIN OUT TOON TELEGRAM CHAT - https://t.me/+wy_odMOP03A5YWZl---------------------⚫️ https://toonunder.com⚪️ Find us on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@ToonUnderPodcast⚫️ Twitter @ToonUnderPod⚪️ Apple Music and Spotify search Toon Under Podcast

Episode 162 — Advantage Arsenal: Narrow First Leg Win After a Dominant Performance at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup Semi-FinalThe boys are back as Gav, Ells and special guest JJ react to Arsenal's first-leg victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup semi-final — a night that delivered control, chances, and a narrow advantage that perhaps didn't reflect the balance of play. The discussion begins with Arsenal's approach to the tie, including selection choices, goalkeeper debate, and how the team set the tone early. With Arsenal dominating large stretches of the first half, the panel explore why a strong performance failed to translate into a more commanding scoreline, touching on chance creation, shot selection, and decision-making in key moments. There's detailed analysis of Arsenal's midfield structure and evolving roles, including how balance, chemistry, and positioning continue to develop as personnel return from injury. The conversation also examines set-piece execution, attacking movement, and what different striker profiles bring to Arsenal's play — particularly in moments where control needs to become separation.Defensively, the episode breaks down the goals conceded, game management in knockout football, and how small errors can shift momentum even during dominant spells. Goalkeeper involvement, box control, and recovery actions are all discussed as Arsenal once again navigate fine margins in a semi-final setting. In the second half, focus turns forward. The panel preview Arsenal's upcoming trip to Nottingham Forest, discussing defensive availability, workload management, and how Arsenal should approach a fixture shaped as much by desperation as quality. There's also discussion around key Premier League matches elsewhere, including the Manchester derby and Tottenham vs West Ham, and what those results could mean in the wider title picture. The episode closes with the Who Am I? game, featuring a former Arsenal forward whose career took him across Europe — and prompts a few nostalgic reflections along the way.A first-leg advantage secured, questions still to answer, and a season entering a defining stretch.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables Intro(00:50) - Chelsea Semi-Final Context & Selection Decisions(02:35) - Goalkeeper Debate: Structure, Crosses & Build-Up Play(04:20) - Fast Start & Early Pressure at Stamford Bridge(05:06) - 0-1 | Set-Piece Breakthrough and Corner Execution(07:12) - Missed Chances & Shot Selection Frustrations(11:41) - Midfield Balance, Roles & Chemistry Questions(16:49) - First-Half Control Without Separation(18:12) - 0-2 | Gyökeres Finish and Box Presence(21:11) - Attacking Relationships & Service to the Striker(23:15) - 1-2 | Momentum Shift & Defensive Breakdown(26:13) - Garnacho's Face / Most Disliked Players(27:40) - 1-3 | Zubimendi's Goal and Game Control(29:16) - Refereeing, Game Management & Discipline(31:04) - Missed Chances to Kill the Tie(31:44) - 2-3 | Late Goal Conceded & Narrow First-Leg Margin(33:55) - Full-Time Reflection, Stats & First-Leg Takeaways(37:22) - PT.2 Who Am I? It was a hard-fought match, and one that many Forest fans (and the Forest manager) felt was overshadowed by the performance of referee Rob Jones - rather than playing against ten men, the Reds were up against 12 of them. The match was lively, but most of the action was in the second half, which started when Rúben Días somehow escaped a second booking for bringing down Igor Jesus. City took full advantage of that reprieve through Tijani Reijnders, before a fine counter-attacking equaliser finished off by Omari Hutchinson. The winning goal came late on, as the officials waved away various episodes of wrestling in the box, one of which prevented Morgan Gibbs-White from blocking Rayan Cherki's effort. Despite the victory, you could see that the visitors had put everything into this one, and several players from both teams fell to the ground at full-time. In this report, Rich and Baz embark on an unexpectedly ranty diatribe against the injustice of it all.
