Facing Crisis Mode with Resilience: California Fruit Growers Speak Out on AgNet News Hour

Farm City Newsday by AgNet West

In today's AgNet News Hour, hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill bring Central Valley energy to the airwaves with an in-depth and timely conversation featuring Daniel Hartwig, President of the California Fresh Fruit Association. From soaring regulatory costs to looming freight challenges, Hartwig offers a candid look at the pressure facing California growers—and how they're responding with grit and innovation. Hartwig  represents 13 fruit commodities ranging from stone fruit and table grapes to pomegranates and persimmons. But beyond sweet fruit, he carries the weight of advocating for the state's farmers in Sacramento and Washington, where he says “regulatory burdens have multiplied 12 to 14 times over the last decade.” He makes clear that California's growers aren't asking for special treatment—just a level playing field. The episode also tackles key federal and state battles. Proposition 12, California's controversial animal housing law, is now the subject of a federal lawsuit. U.S. Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins calls the law “unconstitutional” and says it limits consumer choice while driving up food costs. Nick and Josh dig into what that lawsuit could mean for producers nationwide. Hartwig's insights on trade, water access, and labor are especially valuable. He warns that California's unique combination of high minimum wage, strict environmental rules, and mounting tariffs is squeezing small and mid-size growers out of the industry. “We've been operating in crisis mode for a long time,” he says—but insists that the pendulum may finally be swinging back toward common sense. From student FFA involvement to rising freight costs and property rights, this episode covers the wide landscape of ag policy and on-the-ground realities. It's a must-listen for those who want to stay informed—and inspired—about the future of California farming.

Today's episode features an interview with Darin Hartwig from Planet and DFW Aquarium, a company specializing in aquatic distribution and manufacturing that began in 1993. Hartwig discusses their unique Pro Matrix PVC bottom for larger tanks, which offers durability and flexibility, as an alternative to traditional glass or acrylic. The conversation also explores the evolution and challenges of the aquarium industry, particularly the shift from brick-and-mortar stores to online sales, emphasizing the need for independent stores to focus on installation and ongoing service to remain competitive. Hartwig also shares his personal history in the aquarium hobby and the growth of his business, detailing how he acquired pieces of other companies and now runs a large-scale manufacturing operation, with current trends showing a rise in demand for smaller, all-in-one tanks. Key Takeaways listeners: Do not project your own assumptions or financial limitations onto others; instead, understand their true desires and potential. In a competitive environment, adapt your approach by offering valuable services that provide recurring income and differentiate you. Embrace a proactive "hustle" mentality to continuously seek out new opportunities and leverage modern tools like social media for growth. Recognize when a fundamental mindset shift is necessary for progress and understand that such significant change requires time and sustained effort. Prioritize your personal health and well-being through consistent self-care, even when managing a demanding work schedule. Tonight, we'll read about hermit caves and rock temples from The Subterranean World, written by G. Hartwig and published in 1871.A hermit is a person who lives in seclusion. Eremitism plays a role in a variety of religions although in modern colloquial usage, "hermit" denotes anyone living apart from the rest of society, for any reason. Hartwig's book presents a 19th-century view of natural and human-made underground wonders, from geological formations to sacred spaces carved into rock. In this excerpt, he turns his attention to the austere dwellings of ascetics and monks—places where silence and solitude were not only accepted but sought after. These caves and temples, often carved into cliffsides or hidden in remote valleys, served as places of meditation, penance, or retreat. The tradition of eremitism can be traced back thousands of years, from the deserts of Egypt and Syria to the forested hills of India and the mountainous regions of China. Some hermits lived entirely alone, while others formed loose communities around a shared spiritual purpose. Their dwellings, carved or adapted from stone, remain today as enduring symbols of withdrawal from worldly life, and of the quiet human impulse to seek meaning in stillness. - read by 'N' - Learn more about your ad choices. The Washington Post said women are spreading “misinformation” about birth control in a recent article and many women in our community were PISSED. Myself included. SO I asked my good friend Carly Hartwig on today to talk about it- the REAL reason women are not okay with hormonal birth control and why we are choosing just as effective alternatives to the IUD, nuvaring, and the pill. Carly is a holistic reproductive health practitioner and certified fertility awareness educator. In this episode we are calling out the misinformation claim, let's get informed instead. In this episode, we discuss: The illusion of empowerment that birth control has and how it is actually the opposite of what true empowerment is. The importance of informed consent in birth and birth control, and how if we had known the risks of birth control we would have never agreed to be on it.  How women are gaslit in our medical system, in birth, and in this Washington Post article on birth control. Alternative methods of birth control are being suppressed and called “misinformation” to keep you weak, sick, and disempowered which creates a pharmaceutical and fertility client for life.  All of your birth control options, including cycle tracking options. How the rhythm method and use of period tracking apps are less effective, and true fertility awareness is the more effective natural method and just as effective as pharmaceutical birth control when done correctly. On this episode of the Free Thought Project podcast, Matt and Don are joined by Ryan Hartwig and Jason Fyk for a deep dive into the complex web of free speech, government policies, and big tech. Ryan Hartwig, a former content moderator for Facebook, blew the whistle on internal practices, revealing biases and censorship. His insights into the workings of big tech are crucial in understanding the current digital landscape. Jason Fyk, the founder of The Social Media Freedom Foundation, fights the legal battles against the intertwining of government and tech giants, particularly focusing on the misuse of Section 230. In this riveting discussion, our guests unravel how the U.S. government and big tech companies have co-opted Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, turning it into a tool to suppress Americans' First Amendment rights. The conversation explores the alarming consequences of such actions on the fundamental freedoms of speech and expression. The dialogue also ventures into the controversial topic of pornography. While acknowledging its negative societal impacts, Ryan and Jason discuss the nuances of addressing this issue without resorting to government overreach or outright bans, underscoring the importance of preserving free speech. The podcast concludes on a hopeful note, with both guests offering their solutions to these pressing issues, reiterating the need for a balanced approach that protects individual freedoms while addressing the challenges posed by the digital age.
