there is a scam going on around Frederick County  Authorities say they've received calls over the past few days from citizens who say a representative from the Sheriff's Office had called, using the name of an actual member of the Sheriff's Office. That person advises  them there is an active subpoena, and it can be resolved by paying a certain amount of cash. The Sheriff's Office says the phone number is an online-based number that cannot be tracked. If a citizen calls back, a person answers “Frederick County Sheriff's Department Warrant Division.” Officials with the actual Frederick County Sheriff's Office say this is a scam.   They say the Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies will never ask for money or restitution to resolve an incident. Residents should know  that these scams have a sense of urgency; if you don't take action, something will happen. These scammers also say not to contact family members or friends, or police. The Sheriff's Office say slow down, and think before letting these scammers rush you. He recently attended a conference in Tennessee where he earned a certification through the University of Tennessee's Master Public Information Officer course. He explained what types of things they covered during the class and gave some insight into the protocols that go into disseminating information to the public. We talked about how he took on the role of Public Information Officer (in addition to his traffic duties) and some of the challenges he's faced. We also discussed a few situations he faced on his trip. He encouraged listeners to be educated on laws if you're traveling to other states and gave advice as to where to find such information. It was not without it's glitches: the computer wouldn't play my intro music so Goz played HIS intro music from back in the day. But, as I listened to the recording, the mic didn't pick it up either. Regardless, it was as always, a great conversation full of solid information. Goz explained how compliance issues can spill over into other public safety issues. We talked about the wider consequences during this drought of tossing a lit cigarette from a moving vehicle or parking a running car on dry grass.  I asked about moped laws and regulations, which were much more complicated than I realized. The bonus was that he told a story about a (not so) high-speed chase with a moped that turned into an accident, then a foot chase, and ended with a DUI. Joining me to talk about the job openings with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office were Frederick County Sheriff Lenny Millholland, Lt. Warren Gosnell, and Lt. Tracy Kittoe. The group gave me a rundown of the different positions available within the sheriff's office and explained the process that takes place on the path to becoming a deputy. We talked about the rigorous background check, polygraph, mental health evaluations, and attendance in the police academy. Lt. Kittoe (Lt. of Administration) told us what she looks for during the interview process while Lt. Gosnell explained the various departments and duties for deputies. Sheriff Millholland told me about the challenges he faces with competition from surrounding law enforcement agencies and the pay scale that he must stay within.
