Send us a textThis week I stepped way outside my comfort zone and spoke with Tulare County Fire Chief, Charlie Norman.  I can confidently say that many nurses do not fully understand what firefighters do. We often see them in the ambulance bay and in our communities, but do we really take the time to SEE them? Do we know where the budget for fire services comes from? Do we understand how firefighters advance in their ranks? Sadly, do we realize that firefighter deaths by suicide exceed those who die in the line of duty? Charlie addressed these important issues and more. He explained the long and challenging journey of bringing paramedicine to our County, his path to becoming fire chief, and his relationships with city and county officials because as he said, everything in life comes down to relationships. As fire chief, Charlie prioritizes firefighter mental health, recruitment and retention, having a diverse fire crew, and serving the community.Charlie embodies the core values of integrity, respect, loyalty, teamwork, and compassion. He says everything he learned in kindergarten he can apply to life: keep your hands to yourself, be nice to people and if you don't have anything good to say, keep your mouth closed. And what does he look for in recruits? Character. Yes, they need to be able to pull a hose, bandage a patient, and competently administer medications, but if their character is lacking, they don't belong in the fire service. I'd say with Charlie in charge, everything will be ok. In the five-minute snippet: my granddaughter's question answered by the expert. A routine political ad from the Harris campaign included a shot of Tulare County, California Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, and it turns out he's no fan of the vice president. Dairy farms reduce climate impact with methane digesters, but communities worry about effects

Home to about 1.7 million cows, California is the country's leading dairy producer and a large contributor of methane. Cow burps and manure emit the potent planet-warming gas. A growing number of dairy farms are using methane digesters to convert manure and other organic waste into biogas to produce electricity or power vehicles. The number is expected to increase since waste management practices such as digesters became eligible for funding from the Inflation Reduction Act—President Joe Biden's law to combat climate change. In the last decade, about 120 digesters have cropped up across California and roughly 100 more are in the pipeline. But a technology hailed as a cost-effective way to help the state reach its methane reduction goals has become controversial. Industrial-scale dairy farms already are among the biggest polluters in the San Joaquin Valley, a premier U.S. agricultural region with poor air quality. Now residents worry methane digesters could make pollution worse. In the Tulare County town of Pixley, the stench of cow feces, urine and ammonia forces residents to keep windows and doors closed. Some run air purifiers constantly to maintain comfortable and healthful conditions. A study funded by California air regulators recently concluded widespread digester adoption would have minor effects on local air quality. Officials also are looking into whether digesters increase potentially harmful ammonia emissions. Supporters point to the technology's effectiveness in mitigating climate change. AgSTAR, sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, estimates manure-based digesters reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022. That's roughly the annual greenhouse gas emissions from more than 2 million passenger vehicles. Supporters argue biofuel from methane reduces pollution by replacing fossil fuels with cleaner vehicle fuels. Studies have found people living near large dairies can experience fatigue, respiratory problems, burning eyes and runny noses if odors are concentrated enough. And some research suggests digesters can increase ammonia emissions.  This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The duo explores the implications of this bill for communities in the San Joaquin Valley, particularly Tulare County, which has been targeted by abortion providers.   Key topics include: • Overview of AB 2085 and its potential impact on local zoning laws. • Historical context of abortion clinic proposals in Tulare and Visalia. • The role of local pro-life activists in opposing these clinics. • The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and its exclusion for abortion clinics under the new bill. • The Southern Poverty Law Center's designation of California Family Council as a “hate group” and its broader implications for conservative organizations.   Join John and Jonathan as they unravel the complex legal and social battles surrounding abortion access and local governance in California.
