Talk about rising through the ranks! Chief Deputy David Danzig is the number-two man at PCSO, second only to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, and has done just about everything at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (PCSO). Coming from a law enforcement family, he knew he wanted to be a cop practically since he was a baby. In fact, his reward for potty training was a ride in cruiser running lights and sirens. From his first arrest (charge: Cat Running at Large) to his first week as the new chief, he's never had a bad day at work. Despite the many challenges of law enforcement, he has always loved his job, whether he was working in the Marine unit where he saved lives with the right combination of “skillset and guts” or leading the Violent Crimes Task Force that reduced homicides and gun crimes in the county. It's a peculiarity of law enforcement that as you rise through the ranks, once you get comfortable somewhere they move you somewhere else. Candidate for Chief Deputy Sheriff Misused Force, Documents Show Documents released by the Cobb County Democratic Committee reveal that Michael Dondelinger, a candidate for Chief Deputy Sheriff, was investigated multiple times for misuse of force during his tenure as a sergeant in the Cobb Sheriff's Office. Incidents include authorizing force as punishment, striking an inmate, and drawing a gun on civilians. Despite these past issues, Republican candidate David Cavender, who selected Dondelinger as his chief deputy, defends him, citing the incidents as nearly two decades old and asserting that Dondelinger has since learned his lesson. The revelations have intensified the sheriff race, with accusations exchanged between Cavender and Democratic Sheriff Craig Owens. Cavender argues that Owens was aware of Dondelinger's past when promoting him to captain, while Owens criticizes the timing of these disclosures. After gaining a little experience, Sam transferred to the Clark County Sheriff's Office where he learned what law enforcement was about. Sheriff, a word, and position that derive from the old English term Shire-Reeve. This person was responsible for managing a shire or county in England. The practice began sometime before 700 A.D. and when America was colonized by European settlers we brought the concept with us. Today in the US, 48 out of the 50 states have sheriffs. Alaska doesn't have counties and therefore has no sheriff's and Connecticut replaced its sheriff system with State Marshalls in 2000. In 46 out of the 48 states with the sheriff's system the sheriffs are elected officials and mostly serve 4-year terms.The duties of sheriff vary from state to state and even from county to county. In the south and western states sheriffs are seen as the constitutional law enforcement officer and the position is held in high esteem. Also, the more rural the county the more likely the sheriff is the primary law enforcement agency. Sheriff's are also typically responsible for the jail and court systems in their county making the position difficult and challenge on a number of levels.For Sheriff's, leadership is an important skill. Not only must they lead their officers and civilian employees, but they must also lead in the jails, the courts, and because of the political nature of the position, in the communityAs for notable people that have held the position of sheriff in American history it's an interesting list. From historical figures like Bat Masterson, Daniel Boone, and Grover Cleveland to controversial ones like Buford Pusser, Grady Judd, and Joe Arpaio.I realized if I wanted to discuss leadership in law enforcement, I would be remiss if I didn't talk to at least one Sheriff.I had a perfect candidate in mind.[Insert Intro]Sheriff Chris Lane was elected on November 8, 2022 as the 59th Sheriff of Bartholomew County IN Sheriff Lane has dedicated over 30 years to law enforcement.  During this time, he has served in a variety of positions, including patrol, supervision, administration, and investigations.  He was appointed as Chief Deputy of the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department from 2015 - 2022.  Sheriff Lane is also a 2019 graduate of the FBI National Academy, joining an elite group that makes up less than 1% of America's law enforcement community. And the most important part of his background…we went to the police academy together.

He served as the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Advisor to U.S. Army North (ARNORTH) in support of the Department of Defense's (DoD) assistance to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for the Humanitarian Crisis at the Southwest Border with Mexico. He also served six months alongside the Texas Department of Public Safety in Austin, Texas as the Border Patrol Staff Officer at the Texas Homeland Security Border Security Operations Center (BSOC) as the single point of contact between the BSOC, U.S. Border Patrol Sectors and U.S. Border Patrol in Washington, D.C. Leon Wilmot is the Sheriff of Yuma County, Arizona. He has worked in law enforcement since 1985. Some of his professional accomplishments as Chief Deputy include the restructuring of the Southwest Border Alliance drug task force to the newly formed Yuma County Narcotics Task Force. David C. Reed Chief, Force Protection Training Division Directorate of Training & Education, US Army Military Police School Mr. David ‘DC' Reed served as the Chief of Force Protection Training Division (FPTD) having responsibilities for three USAMPS training branches; the Law Enforcement Operations Branch, the Antiterrorism Training Branch, and the Advanced Military Working Dog Training Branch. In all, FPTD trains in excess of 7800 US Army and other DoD personnel annually. Mr. Reed is a retired career law enforcement officer and started with USAMPS in 1996 as a Special Reaction Team instructor at Ft. McClellan, AL. He is a charter member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA), a past member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and past member of both the Missouri Sheriffs Association and the Missouri Police Chiefs Association. Prior to his appointment as FPTD Chief Reed was Chief of the US Army LE Operations Branch since its inception in 2003. He led the development of courses for the Military Police Corps to include the US Army Civilian Police Academy, the LE Senior Leaders course, the Conservation LE Officer course, and a broad range of special projects, including analysis of Army operations world-wide. He was the principal training and operations advisor from 2003-2019 to the DoD Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, (later Intelligence and Security) Office of Policy and Support. Before working as a senior Army civilian, Reed was the Chief Deputy and lead Criminal Investigator of Metropolitan Moore County, Tennessee. He also served as Commander for the 17th Judicial District Major Crimes Task Force from 1993-1996, working multi-jurisdictional violent crime, white collar crime, and attorney/ medical malpractice investigations. From 1991 to 1993 he was a homicide investigator for Bedford Co. and later Metro. He started his police career with Prince George's County Police, Maryland in 1979 and served in a variety of roles to include patrol and SWAT. Mr. Reed retired from the US Army Reserve having been assigned to special duties with the DoD, serving from 2003-2019. He is also a veteran of the US Air Force (‘79-85) where he served as Special Agent to Specially Designated Secure Air Mission (SDSAM) aircraft including Air Force One. Reed served worldwide from Andrews AFB under President Reagan as an airborne counter threat agent for four years. He is also a veteran of the Tennessee Army National Guard where he served as a Captain of the state NGB Service Rifle Competition team. Mr. Reed is a 1980 graduate of Prince George's County, Maryland Police Academy and a 1985 graduate of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy. Sheriff Marian Brown sits down with Michael Molthan - M2 The Rock. Sheriff Brown was appointed Interim Sheriff of Dallas County on December 19, 2017 and sworn in on January 1, 2018. Sheriff Brown is the first African-American Sheriff in Dallas County and one of only five African-American female sheriffs in the United States. Sheriff Brown began her career in law enforcement in 1988 with the Duncanville Police Department. She was a pioneer, in that she was the first African-American female hired by the Duncanville Police Department. She quickly ascended in rank, promoting to the rank of sergeant in 1993. While in that rank, she served as a first-line supervisor in the Patrol Division. In 1995, she was assigned to the Community Relations/Crime Prevention Division, where was tasked with creating a Community Oriented Policing Task Force. Through this unit, she formulated such programs as Citizens on Patrol and Duncanville Police Beat, a weekly information program hosted by Brown and broadcast on local cable. Other programs managed by Brown included Citizens Police Academy; Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT); Hand-in-Hand and Success Through Accepting Responsibility or STAR Program, (a school-district-wide character education program implemented in ten elementary schools, three intermediate schools, and two junior highs. Each school had an assigned officer to interact with students and emphasize the character trait each week.) Sheriff Brown is known throughout the law enforcement community for her role as a law enforcement trainer/anchor on the Law Enforcement Television Network (LETN), an international law enforcement satellite network based in Carrollton, Texas. Sheriff Brown worked with LETN for ten years, while continuing her service with the Duncanville Police Department. In 1997, Brown was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. She continued to work in the arena of community relations, but eventually returned to the Patrol Division to serve as commander. In 2005, she was assigned to command the Criminal Investigations Division. There, she served until 2007 when she was named to the position of Assistant Chief of Police. She served as Assistant Chief until 2014, when she retired and joined the Dallas County Sheriff's Department to serve as Chief Deputy in charge of General Services. Steve January, the Chief Deputy of the McLennan County Sheriff in Waco, Texas, was a lawman cut from denim of the old west. Hundreds of officers recently paid their last respects to January, whose life was not cut short by a bullet from his many face-offs with killers but by cancer.  I'm Robert Riggs with a story about an officer who fought many a round seeking justice inside the crime scene tape. On today's episode, Dennis speaks with Pinal County Deputy Sheriff, Matthew Thomas. Chief Deputy Matthew Thomas has served the Pinal County Sheriff's Office with distinguishment since 1993. An Arizona native, Chief Thomas humbly began his law enforcement career as a Detention Officer before moving into Patrol, Narcotics Enforcement, SWAT team. Matt was promoted to Chief Deputy in 2016 when Sheriff Mark Lamb was elected.  As Chief Deputy for PCSO, Thomas is 2nd in command of the Sheriff's Office consisting of 233 sworn staff, 207 Detention staff, and 234 civilian support staff and volunteers in a county that is 5,400 square miles with a population of approximately 500,000. Chief Thomas manages an overall budget for the Sheriff's Office of $47.1 million dollars, oversees all PCSO operations for sworn Deputies, Detention and Civilian staff and acts as the Sheriff's Senior Executive Officer. He served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (GALEFI) and is certified by GALEFI as a Master Firearms Instructor. He is certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) as a general topics and firearms instructor and is a graduate of the FBI's Law Enforcement Instructor and Police Firearms Instructor training programs. He received the Distinguished Weapons Expert rating based on his score in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers' Firearms Instructor Training Program.
