Gary Edson, Covid Collaborative, reflects on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), now at its 20th anniversary. It originated with a Republican president, George W. Bush, who transformed development assistance. Bipartisanship was vital, and PEPFAR fulfilled moral and geostrategic goals. Now, PEPFAR reauthorization is in peril in the post-Dobbs era. What needs to happen to rescue things? In the toxic, polarized post-Covid era, how do we step over that noise and bring about a new conversation about topline goals to protect Americans on a bipartisan basis? Give a listen!

Welcome to the Harvard Center for International Development's Beyond COVID podcast. This podcast is a series of conversations on various key dimensions of COVID response and recovery. Our goal with these conversations, and with CID's Beyond COVID research initiative, is to make use of lessons learned and capitalize on emergent innovations sparked by the pandemic in order to address losses and reimagine global development in the post-COVID era. On a special edition of the Beyond COVID Podcast originally recorded on February 25, 2022, we heard from an external perspective: Dr. Steven Phillips, Vice President of Science and Strategy at the COVID Collaborative. CID Student Ambassador Aqil Merchant sat down with Dr. Phillips to discuss COVID-19 vaccine distribution and longer-term pandemic preparedness.

Thursday was a bad day for President Biden. First, the Supreme Court struck down his vaccine mandate for large businesses. Clayton Neville covers that for us in our Correspondent Close-Up. Then, it would appears that changing rules in the U.S. Senate to pass the voting rights bill is not going to happen. Linda Kenyon reports on that for us. What happens to the kids whose parents died because of COVID-19? Where do they live? Who takes care of them? John Bridgeland of the COVID Collaborative joins us to talk about an effort his group is making to ensure these kids are taken care of. And we'll dig into the Supreme Court's decision about the vaccine mandate with Nathaniel Weixel of TheHill.com. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
More than 167,000 children have been robbed, by COVID-19, of a parent, grandparent, or other in-home caregiver on whom they had relied for their social, developmental needs. This estimate is from a new report from COVID Collaborative and Social Policy Analytics that explores the number, characteristics, and needs of these highly vulnerable children and offers policymakers a way forward to help them. The effort was led by Dan Treglia, who joins us on this episode of Using the Whole Whale. Dan is an Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, CEO of Social Policy Analytics, and our Research and Evaluation Whaler. Read the report here. Gary Edson, President and founder of The Covid Collaborative, has for decades been a highly visible and impactful leader across government, business, and the non-profit worlds. While serving in senior White House positions in President George W. Bush's administration, he played a key role in the design and launch of the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and in the management of G-7 and other summits. He joins us to explore why the international response to Covid-19 has been so radically different from the response two decades ago to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He also walks us through the genesis of the Covid Collaborative, how it operates, its impressive achievements in devising plans of action embraced by governors whose constituents account for one-third of Americans, and its rapid, innovative work on testing, masks, vaccine hesitancy, and school reopening. More recently, the Collaborative has focused (with CSIS) on the stark global split between vaccine ‘haves' versus ‘have nots,' at the very moment when two Americas have appeared, the vaccinated and unvaccinated. What gives him hope? “America rises to the occasion.” Gary Edson is the President of The Covid Collaborative.
While many have already started the vaccination process, there is currently a general lack of confidence. Overall, 40% of the U.S. public have expressed concerns, ranging from “skeptical” to “open but uncertain,” about getting vaccinated. The Ad Council and COVID Collaborative are leading a massive communications effort to educate the American public and build confidence around the COVID-19 vaccines. Find out more about those efforts on this Our Ohio Weekly. 00:00 - The JBS cyber attack puts even more emphasis on more regional capacity needs. Ohio Farm Bureau's Brandon Kern talks about what is being done in Ohio in that front. 05:58 - The Ad Council's Hannah Lipps and Charysse Nunez talk about the COVID-19 Vaccine Education Initiative, giving Americans all of the information they need before making the decision to get vaccinated. 23:50 - Meet the newly elected President of Ohio FFA, Jacob Zajkowski, "To the Beat of Agriculture". 32:20 - Dr. Christina Canfield M.D., a family medicine physician from Wakefield, talks about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine. 42:20 - Dennis Bell from the Columbus office of IRS gives the details about the upcoming IRS' Rural Growth Symposium.
This week the CSIS Schieffer Series hosted a high-energy exchange on “The Next Phase Of Covid-19.” Steve and Andrew were joined by Jeremy Konyndyk, executive director of USAID’s Covid-19 Task Force, who delivered a stirring keynote address outlining USAID’s vision for addressing the burgeoning pandemic crisis while simultaneously investing in long-term health security preparedness in acutely vulnerable low-income countries. A roundtable followed on the historic legacy of US presidential leadership amid global health crises -- and the lessons for the escalating urgent demands unfolding in South Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere. Steve, Andrew, and Jeremy were joined by Julie Gerberding, co-chair of the CSIS Commission on Strengthening America’s Health Security and executive vice president and chief patient officer of Merck; and Gary Edson, president of the COVID Collaborative and former White House official under President George W. Bush who played a pivotal role in launching PEPFAR and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

The COVID-19 vaccines are here and becoming more accessible every day. And while much of the population would do just about anything to get vaccinated, there are a significant number of people who are hesitant, if not outright hostile, about the vaccine. So the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative are launching a new COVID-19 Vaccine Education Initiative to try and meet people where they are to try and answer the questions people have and get them to a point where vaccine hesitancy turns into confidence. Dr. Georges Benjamin, American Public Health Association Executive Director, and Michelle Hillman, Ad Council Chief Campaign Development Officer joins KYW Newsradio In Depth to talk about how they're trying to get answers to people who have questions about vaccines. The COVID-19 pandemic, which began in early 2019, has had significantly negative consequences for individuals, families and communities around the world, with huge economic and political effects. Short-term strategies have involved sheltering in place and social distancing, rigorous and frequent hand washing, and the disciplined use of masks. We now have reached a stage in the pandemic when vaccines are bring rolled out in the United States and globally, initially for “at risk” populations. There is much confusion arising from conflicting information about the new vaccines. There are questions related to what we know about the vaccines (and how we know it), and what we don't know (and how and when we will know more). To address these questions, two leading virologists will be in conversation with the chair of the Health and Medicine Forum at The Commonwealth Club of California. Dr. Melanie Ott and Dr. Warner Greene from Gladstone Institutes talk with Dr. Robert Lee Kilpatrick, to help the public understand COVID-19 vaccine options better. Meet the Speakers Melanie Ott, M.D., Ph.D., has been the director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology since 2020, and a senior investigator at Gladstone Institutes. She is also a professor of medicine at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Ott is a member of the Association of American Physicians, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. She is also an expert contributor to the COVID Collaborative, a bipartisan group of national experts and institutions that helps shape state and local efforts against the pandemic. Warner Greene, M.D., Ph.D., is the director of the The Michael Hulton—Gladstone Center for HIV Cure Research, senior investigator, and Nick and Sue Hellmann Distinguished Professor of Translational Medicine at Gladstone Institutes. He is the founding and emeritus director of Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology. Greene is also professor of medicine, microbiology and of immunology at UCSF. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and a fellow of the American Academy Arts and Sciences. He also serves as co-director of the UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research, and he has served as councilor and president of the Association of American Physicians.
