Vanguardistas have more fun—so if you don't already subscribe to the podcast, join the Vanguard today via Apple Podcasts or extratakes.com for non-fruit-related devices. In return you'll get a whole extra Take 2 alongside Take 1 every week, with bonus reviews, more viewing recommendations from the Good Doctors and whole bonus episodes just for you. And if you're already a Vanguardista, we salute you. It's time for the Take team to take stock of our first quarter, so this week we're looking back over the first three or so months and putting our affairs in order: deciding whether to tighten our belts or loosen the purse strings, cut some salaries or dish out a few tasty bonuses. We're bringing you a Quintessential First Quarter Recap of all the best bits from the year so far—including interviews with Ashley Walters & Erin Doherty, Jesse Eisenberg & Kieran Culkin and Brady Corbet—and a chance to hear moments from Mark's best reviews like the previously Vanguardista-only ‘Santosh'. And there's still plenty of brand new stuff for you in today's take too. Our guest is David Oyelowo, who you'll hear in conversation with Simon about his new Apple TV+ series ‘Government Cheese'. In this surreal 60s-set California comedy-drama, David plays Hampton Chambers, a father and former burglar trying to go straight after his release from prison and make his fortune in a crazy world. By popular demand, Mark and Simon will also be reviewing The Studio—the Hollywood film industry satire starring Seth Rogen as a spineless executive trying to make serious cinema and serious money... and possibly failing to do either. Plus we'll be ‘treating' you to the Laughter Lift as usual (you thought you'd managed to avoid that this week didn't you? Oh no, the hilarity never stops.) With James away this week, it's down to Boyd and Kay to take the helm and bang on about the week's big TV but in a shock move, they admit James rewatching shows he's seen thousands of times before is actually, dare we say it, a GOOD thing. More importantly, David Oyelowo is our guest, chatting all things Government Cheese (that's the title of his new Apple TV+ show, not a dietary preference), and we review Fake, an Aussie true-life drama which triggers Kay's dating experience memories, the whodunnit I, Jack Wright from Chris Lang of Unforgotten fame, and in a final twist, Boyd does a mini-spoiler special review of Doctor Who series 2, ep 2 ‘Vox' because it deserves special treatment!(Episode 333)

Created by Ayesha Carr and Paul Hunter, Government Cheese tells the story of Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo), a criminal in the 1960s who has recently been released from prison. With a new life on the horizon, Hampton has aspirations of returning to his wife and children and starting a legitimate business with an innovative new drill. However, his reunion doesn't go as planned. With his wife and children having (mostly) moved on emotionally, Hampton's return spins their world into chaos. In this 1on1, we speak to stars Jahi Di'Allo Winston and Evan Ellison about whether or not it's ever 'too late for family'.
Yes, it's time for James to bang on about The Last Of Us again (sorry) but that's okay, because we have Charlie Brooker and Jessica Rhodes on the show to balance things out by talking Black Mirror Season 7 (37:05). Aside from forcing Kay to watch more ‘zomzies' in The Last Of Us (on Sky Atlantic), we also head over to Disney+ to watch Denise Gough take part in the playdate from hell in The Stolen Girl (1:28:19) and take a slightly surreal look at the world of self-sharpening drill bits (stay with us) in Government Cheese on Apple TV+ (1:39:46). Also, we'd love to get your feedback on the podcast so do head over and fill out our little questionnaire here: https://tinyurl.com/ms9u3z22(Episode 332)Note: time stamps are approximate as the ads throw them out, so are only meant as a guide. Hey, Neighbor, the family almost had to do this episode WITHOUT the Comedian because John is passing a kidney stone. But he is present and soldiering on! (If you struggle with the same ailment, Luke has a suggestion for something to try.) Drink more water, find the nearest theme park, and try to get some "bang" for your buck. Next: John and his wife are landlords who have been fighting a legal battle with a group of squatters for over a year... The whole Branyan family pitched in this weekend, to help clean up the mess left behind by these people. Why would someone hang a boat motor from a tree? Maybe for the same reason they would keep a rotting deer head in their kitchen? Or a hollowed out tree stump full of scrap metal? Later: Let's try to make sense of the fact that some human beings actually live in that sort of squalor (and refuse to pay any bills). What causes someone to make those sorts of decisions? And if you've never read the Lord of the Flies, tune in for a quick summary of what you're missing. Email the Comedian's family at nextdoor@johnbranyan.com.

"Cheese that had been bought to create that white middle-class, it was cheese that had been used to rob African Americans of their land." World famous wypipologist Michael Harriot recounts how the New Deal left Black people out. The same U.S. government that alienated Black people from subsidized mortgage programs, turned around and created programs that propped up wypipo-owned farms.
