After his arrest, investigators would learn that, by the time he appeared on the game show, he was also a killer. In the year that followed, Alcala would go on to murder several other women until he was finally caught and convicted for his crimes. At his trial, Rodney Alcala was found guilty of eight murders, among other crimes, but he is suspected of several other murders, perhaps as many as one hundred or more.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1980. Daily Dose of Hope February 4, 2025 Day 3 of Week 45 Scripture: Ezekiel 37-39; Psalm 87; John 13 Welcome back, everyone! It's Tuesday and it's time for the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that goes along with the New Hope Church daily Bible reading plan. Let's get into our Scripture reading for today. Today's Ezekiel reading is some of my favorite Scripture. In chapter 37, the prophet Ezekiel has a vision in which he is in a valley filled with hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dry bones. The Scripture is clear that these are very dry bones. They may have been the bones of a defeated army from a long time ago, simply left for dead, and many years have passed. There are no signs of who these people were; the flesh has decomposed and dried up, and all that's left are these piles of bones. God is walking Ezekiel through the bones, back and forth. Then God asks Ezekiel, "Can these bones live?" I can't help but wonder what's going on in Ezekiel's head. He responds, "Only you know that, God." Then, God then tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones. He tells Ezekiel to tell the bones that they will come to life-that tendons will form, skin will cover them, and breath will fill them." This is where you know that Ezekiel is really obedient and faithful, because he doesn't ask questions, he doesn't hesitate or raise an eyebrow, he simply does it. After all the things God has had Ezekiel do, this one might even be fairly easy. When Ezekiel prophesies to the bones, there is a rattling sound as the bones begin to come together. I love how the Scripture includes the sound effects. Rattle, rattle, creak, creak. The bones do come together and there are tendons, flesh, and skin. But at this point, there isn't real life in them. They are simply bodies with flesh and bone. I picture that museum exhibit at MOSI about human bodies, where they use real human bodies that have been preserved but they are not alive. For something to have real life, there must be breath and there is still no breath. God tells Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones again. God tells him to say this in verse 9, "This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live." The Hebrew word for breath that is used here is ruach and it means breath, wind, or spirit. So Ezekiel prophesies and God's spirit or God's breath comes from all four directions and enters the lifeless bodies. This is the same word used in Genesis 2 when God breathes life into Adam. Here, God breathed life into these bodies. Then, imagine this, standing before Ezekiel was a whole army of people. No more lifeless bones but a whole army, living beings, come alive with the very breath of God. Then, God tells Ezekiel that the bones were the people of Israel. Remember, these are the people who were hopeless, existing in exile but impoverished, emotionally and spiritually dead; separated from their land, separated from their God. God tells Ezekiel to communicate to the people that God will restore them. He will put life back into them and will return them to Israel. And I love verse14, "I will put my Spirit (my ruach) in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.' Obviously, this is an Old Testament passage and the message was to the Israelites. But I think it's impossible for us, for me, to read this and not connect it with the new, better thing God does through the person of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit. New life, resurrection, God's Spirit in-dwelling his people. These themes are so vivid in this passage and there are so many Scriptures that these themes bring to mind. I think about Jesus saying in John 10:10, "I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly." It's not the same old, dry bones existence, but new, abundant life in Jesus. I think about Acts 2, the early Christ-followers huddled in the upper room, knowing they are supposed to wait for something big but unsure what's next. Then, there is a loud, violent wind sound and what look to be tongues of fire. God's Spirit, once again, comes and is present among the people. It's different than before. It's a new thing. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, now God dwells in his people transforming them from the inside out. New life, a new kind of restoration. I will say it again: our God is still in the business of restoration. So that's a lot of words to make this point. God knows your dry bones, the dry places in your life. God's Spirit has the power to restore your life. God's Spirit has the power to restore us as a church. But this is important-the transformative work of God is not about putting things exactly the way they used to be. Rather, it's about allowing God's Spirit to blow within us and do a new thing. You feel like your marriage is dead, like there is no life left? I have a very good friend who had filed divorce papers, the marriage was in shambles, both of them had extra-marital affairs, and many horrific things had been said. Words that literally took the breath out of their marriage. But at just the time when all seemed lost, God's Spirit blew into that couple and began to change them from the inside out. It was slow, it was excruciating at times, it wasn't the way they imagined, but they are together. Where God's Spirit blows, there can be life. God can do a new thing. Now, chapters 38-39 of Ezekiel are a little different. He is now speaking to the nations. God will defeat the evil present in other nations as well. Evil in these chapters is personified by a ruler named Gog, and that name is somewhat fictious, as it comes from a genealogy of ancient lands and he is an archetype of sorts of evil. Gog, in this allegory, allies himself with many other nations. But eventually, God defeats Gog through a series of calamities. There is a lot of symbolism here, but the point is that God will defeat evil in the end. Our New Testament passage is John 13. Jesus has done the unexpected, as he often does. The time for the Passover meal has come, the disciples are sitting and reclining at the table, and Jesus himself gets up to wash their feet. This might not sound that odd to us, but foot-washing was a lowly task in 1st century Palestine. Think about it: their feet were very dirty; the men wore sandals, they walked everywhere, and the roads were filthy with dirt, dust, and animal droppings. Thus, this was the job usually saved for the lowliest of servants. Peers did not wash each other's feet. In Luke's Gospel, the disciples start arguing about who is the greatest among them; their attitudes certainly indicated that they weren't going to stoop so low as to wash each other's feet. And so when Jesus gets up to wash the disciples' feet, in the Scripture that was just read, the disciples are shocked. How could he? Of course, Jesus always has something deeper in mind. Jesus is a perfect example of humility and selflessness, which will ultimately be demonstrated in its most extreme form on the cross. What is it about us as human beings that we so often struggle with truly loving one another? Yes, I'll love that person, as long as I don't have to make a sacrifice. But Jesus is the epitome of a perfect loving sacrifice and he calls us to be as well. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Blessings, Pastor Vicki

When Cheryl Bradshaw appeared on the popular game show The Dating Game in 1978, she was charmed by bachelor number one, Rodney Alcala, and by the end of the episode, she'd chosen him to take her on a date. However, just minutes after the episode finished taping, Cheryl met bachelor number two in person backstage and was immediately uncomfortable and quickly contacted producers of the show to cancel the date. What Bradshaw didn't know at the time was that, in doing so, she had narrowly avoided spending an evening in the company of one of America's most notorious serial killers. At the time of his appearance on The Dating Game in 1978, Alcala was a convicted sexual predator who had served time for sexual assault and had only avoided a charge of attempted murder on a technicality.
Zimbabvē atrodas viens no pasaulē elpu aizraujošākajiem dabas brīnumiem – Viktorijas ūdenskritums, ko vietējie dēvē par “Mosi-oa-Tunya” jeb tulkojumā “Dūmi, kas dārd” ("The Smoke That Thunders").

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
(Study of the Shulhan Aruch together with the rulings of Hacham Bension Abba Shaul) The Shulhan Aruch rules that at "Mosi Masa" during the Seder, one eats a Ke'zayit from the top Masa, and a second Ke'zayit from the second Masa, which is the broken piece. The Peri Hadash (Rav Hizkiya Da Silva, 1659-1698) explained that this is done because it is uncertain whether one should eat from the top Masa or from the middle Masa. In order to satisfy both opinions, one should eat a Ke'zayit from both Masot. Hacham Bension notes that according to this explanation, it would seem proper for every person at the Seder to have two Masot in front of him, so they can all fulfill this Halacha. In fact, since Kabbalistic tradition teaches that the special foods should be taken directly from the Ke'ara (Seder plate), everyone at the Seder should, seemingly, have his own Ke'ara. Hacham Bension observes that some people indeed follow this practice, and this is admirable, though practically speaking, this is often very difficult, particularly when a large number of people are present at the Seder. Therefore, the more prevalent practice is that only the one leading the Seder has a Ke'ara and the three Masot. After reciting the Berachot over the Masa, he eats a Ke'zayit from the top Masa and the middle Masa, and then distributes pieces of these two Masot to everyone else at the Seder. They should supplement this Masa with additional Masa taken from the box on the table. Hacham Bension explains that in principle, it suffices to eat one Ke'zayit of Masa for "Mosi Masa," though in practice, it is customary to eat two Ke'zetim. The reason, he writes, is that according to some opinions, a Ke'zayit is twice the volume of modern-day olives, and when it comes to the Misva of eating Masa, which constitutes a Torah obligation, we should follow this stringent opinion. Therefore, one should eat two Ke'zetim for "Mosi Masa." One Ke'zayit is approximately 20 grams of Masa, and so one should eat 40 grams for "Mosi Masa." Preferably, as numerous Poskim write, one should endeavor to eat the entire Ke'zayit all at once. This means that one places a Ke'zayit in his mouth, chews it very well, and then swallows it all together. Several Poskim, including the Hayeh Adam (Rav Abraham Danzig of Vilna, 1748-1820), as well as the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Sav (24), write that one should ideally eat both Ke'zetim all at once. However, if one finds this difficult, then he can eat one Ke'zayit at once, and then another Ke'zayit at once. If even this is too difficult, or if one is afraid that he will be ridiculed by others at the Seder, then he can eat the two Ke'zetim normally. He should try to eat the full quantity of Masa within a period of four minutes, but if he cannot, then he must at least eat the full amount within nine minutes. One must ensure not to talk at all until completing the full quantity of Masa that is required. The Misva of Marror is fulfilled by eating a Ke'zayit of lettuce. Hacham Bension maintains that one should preferably eat 30 grams of lettuce for the Misva. According to the Shulhan Aruch, one should submerge the entire Ke'zayit of Marror in Haroset before eating it. The Peri Hadash observed the custom to dip only a part of the lettuce in Haroset, but Hacham Bension writes that one should follow the Shulhan Aruch's position and submerge the entire Ke'zayit in Haroset. One should then immediately remove the lettuce from the Haroset, as otherwise the bitterness of the lettuce will be lost. He then shakes off the excess Haroset, recites the Beracha, and eats the Marror. For Korech, one eats one Ke'zayit of Masa – approximately 20 grams – and a Ke'zayit of Marror, together. For Korech, it is customary to dip only part of the Marror in the Haroset. One does not need then to shake off the excess Haroset. One should not eat roasted meat at the Seder. If the Zeroa on the Seder plate had been boiled, and not only roasted, it may be eaten at the Seder. If it was only roasted, then it should not be eaten. During the meal, one must ensure not to eat so much that he will have no appetite for the Afikoman. If one is full at the end of the meal, to the point where he does not feel like eating at all, then his eating of the Afikoman will be considered "Achila Gasa" (overindulgent eating), which does not constitute a Halachic act eating, and he will thus not fulfill the obligation of eating the Afikoman. Moreover, Hacham Bension infers from the Rambam's formulation of the Misva of Masa that one fulfills a Misva every time he eats Masa on the night of the Seder, even beyond the Masa that is strictly required to be eaten. Therefore, instead of indulging in other foods, it is proper to eat additional Masa at the Seder. It should also be noted that the Zohar refers to Masa as "Michla De'asvata" – "food of healing," meaning, Masa has a beneficial, "healing" impact upon the soul. If one prepared to recite Birkat Ha'mazon and remembered that he had not eaten the Afikoman, then he eats the Afikoman at that point, and does not recite a new Beracha of "Ha'mosi." Even if one had announced "Hab Lan Ve'nibrich," introducing Birkat Ha'mazon, he does not recite a new Beracha over the Afikoman. Normally, once this announcement is made, one is assumed to have diverted his attention from eating, such that if he then changes his mind and decides to eat, he must recite a new Beracha. At the Seder, however, this Halacha does not apply. The reason is because we sit at the Seder as G-d's guests, and a guest, who is dependent upon his host, always anticipates that more food might be served, such that he never actually diverts his attention from eating. Therefore, if one prepared to recite Birkat Ha'mazon but then realized he needs to eat the Afikoman, he does not require a new Beracha over the Afikoman. The Shulhan Aruch rules that if one remembered only after Birkat Ha'mazon, before drinking the third cup of wine, that he had not eaten the Afikoman, then he washes Netilat Yadayim, recites Ha'mosi, eats the Afikoman, and then recites Birkat Ha'mazon again over the third cup of wine. If one remembered only after drinking the third cup, then he should not eat Afikoman, but should instead rely on the Masa he ate during the meal, which may retroactively be considered his Afikoman. However, if the Masa he had eaten during the meal was not Masa Shemura, then he must wash and eat the Afikoman. He then recites Birkat Ha'mazon over another cup of wine. If the Afikoman was lost, one may take other Masa as his Afikoman. It is preferable, if one can, to eat two Ke'zetim of Masa as the Afikoman. The Afikoman commemorates the meat of the Korban Pesah, which was eaten together with Masa, and so one should preferably eat one Ke'zayit of Masa in commemoration of the Korban Pesah, and a second Ke'zayit in commemoration of the Masa with which the sacrifice was eaten. If this is difficult, however, it suffices to eat just one Ke'zayit of Masa as the Afikoman. It turns out, then, that one should, ideally, eat five Ke'zetim of Masa at the Seder: two for "Mosi Masa," one for Korech, and two for the Afikoman.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
If a person had already fulfilled his obligation of Kiddush on Shabbat, may he recite Kiddush again for those who have not yet heard Kiddush? This often happens on Shabbat morning, when a man attends synagogue and then participates in the Sebet after the services, where he hears Kiddush and then eats. May he repeat Kiddush for his wife and children when he returns home, or is he ineligible to recite Kiddush on their behalf, since he has already fulfilled his Kiddush obligation? A similar situation arises when a Rabbi or other distinguished figure attends several affairs on Shabbat morning. He might recite Kiddush at the Sebet after services, and then attend a luncheon where he is given the honor of reciting Kiddush. Can he repeat Kiddush and fulfill the obligation for those in attendance, who have yet to hear or recite Kiddush? A fundamental rule in Halacha establishes that "Af Al Pi She'yasa Mosi" – even if a person has already fulfilled his obligation, he may repeat the recitation to fulfill the requirement for others. Hence, a person who has already recited Kiddush may repeat Kiddush for his family or for anybody else, and the others fulfill their obligation by listening to his recitation. This Halacha applies without restriction; a person can recite Kiddush many times on Shabbat morning in order for others to fulfill their obligation by listening to his recitation. Thus, if a Rabbi attends even four or five Sebets on Shabbat morning, he may be given the honor of reciting Kiddush at each function. In such a case, if the one who makes Kiddush does not wish to drink the wine, he may recite Kiddush and give the cup to somebody else (an adult) to drink. Normally, one cannot recite a Beracha over food on behalf of somebody else. If, for example, somebody wishes to drink some wine, he cannot ask his friend – who is not drinking wine – to recite the Beracha on his behalf. When it comes to Berachot over food, only the person who eats or drinks may recite the Beracha. Seemingly, then, a person who recites Kiddush – which consists of the Beracha of "Boreh Peri Hagefen" over wine – should be required to drink the wine, rather than allow somebody else to drink the wine. However, the Beracha of "Boreh Peri Hagefen" in Kiddush has the status of a "Birkat Ha'misva" – the Beracha recited over a Misva, rather than simply a Beracha recited over food. When it comes to Birkat Ha'misva, one may, indeed, recite the Beracha on behalf of somebody else. Therefore, one who recites Kiddush is not required to personally drink the wine, and may instead give the wine to another adult to drink. This Halacha is explicitly codified in the Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 273:4; listen to audio recording for precise citation). I indeed recall that Hacham Baruch Ben Haim, Zecher Sadik Libracha, would recite Habdala on Mosa'eh Shabbat in the terrace room of Shaare Zion, and, preferring not to drink the wine, would give the cup of wine to somebody else to drink. Incidentally, we should note that the Kiddush recited on Shabbat morning differs from the Friday night Kiddush in that it essentially consists of only the Beracha over the wine. Although we customarily recite some Pesukim (verses) relevant to Shabbat as part of the Shabbat morning Kiddush, these verses are not actually part of the Kiddush. Therefore, if somebody does not have a Siddur available on Shabbat morning when he recites Kiddush, and he does not remember the verses customarily recited, he may simply recite the Beracha of "Boreh Peri Hagefen," and this suffices for the Shabbat morning Kiddush. Similarly, if a woman wishes to recite Kiddush so she can eat before her husband returns home from the synagogue on Shabbat morning, but she is not familiar with the customary text, she may simply recite the Beracha of "Boreh Peri Hagefen." Summary: A person may recite Kiddush on behalf of others on Shabbat even if he had already recited or heard Kiddush. When a person recites Kiddush (or Habdala) on behalf of others, he does not have to drink the wine himself; he can give the wine to another adult to drink.

Once known as H. Rap Brown, a charismatic leader of the Black Panther Party, Al-Amin was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. But was Al-Amin truly guilty? Or was it payback for decades of work against the establishment? Episodes available here: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-radical-128726881

Mosi Secret has written for ProPublica, The New York Times Magazine, and GQ. His new podcast is Radical. “I think this story made me call on parts of myself that are not journalistic because I don't really think that's the way we're going to get out of this at this point in my life. I think that it takes a more radical reimagining of who we are as human beings, the ways in which we're connected, and what we owe to each other. And that's not a reporting thing—that's a ‘who are you' kind of thing.” Show notes: mosisecret.com Secret on Longform Secret's New York Times archive 10:00 “Stolen Youth: How Durham's Criminal Justice System Sent Erick Daniels to Prison Based on the Shape of His Eyebrows” (INDYWeek • May 2007) 18:00 “On the Brink in Brownsville” (New York Times Magazine • May 2014) 21:00 “‘The Way to Survive It Was to Make A's'” (New York Times Magazine • September 2017) 23:00 Johnny Kauffman's website 28:00 “Having a Drink With Mosi Secret, the New York Times' First-Ever Sin and Vice Reporter” (Joe Coscarelli • New York Magazine • June 2014) 29:00 “Behind the Red Door” (New York Times • May 2014) 38:00 “The Real 'CSI': How America's Patchwork System of Death Investigations Puts the Living at Risk” (A.C. Songbirds are amazing. I've spent a number of years getting to know the birds of the region of the U.S. where I live, and it's something that's given me lots of joy, as well as fresh perspectives on life and how we're all connected. But I'll never really manage to comprehend the life of a migratory bird (and many songbirds are migratory). Crossing mountain ranges and forests, the borders between countries, and even oceans in their amazing journeys—it's truly something beyond words. Bird banding is a research technique that allows us to glimpse this fascinating world of the songbirds. This story tells of a bird-banding project in Wyoming with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation (JHWF). It's part of a much larger project called Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS), which takes place across the US and Canada. And although this story is focused on Wyoming, it's really much broader than that—a look at the extraordinary lives of songbirds and how we can understand them. For those of you who are near Jackson, Wyoming, you can find information about JHWF's bird banding sites and how to visit them during the summer here: https://jhwildlife.org/monitoring-avian-productivity-and-survivorship-maps-project/. And here are links to learn more about the MAPS and MoSI bird banding projects in the Americas.

Ambition and confidence are two concepts that make an artist. These ideas can take different forms and trajectories, but artists can accomplish anything with talent and a supportive community. In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with one artist who exudes ambition and confidence. Daryl Howard is a mokuhanga printmaker and artist who lives and works in Austin, Texas.
