Back in our Best of 2018 episodes, we had a poll to let our listeners vote on their favorite film of the year, dubbed the People's Choice for Best Psychotronic Film of 2018. We made a promise that whatever film should win would be the subject of a future episode of the podcast. This week, we're fulfilling that promise by taking a look at your favorite 2018 genre film, David Gordon Green's HALLOWEEN. When we covered the original HALLOWEEN franchise in October of 2018, we invited on friend of the show and HALLOWEEN super fan Jeremy Johnson for a couple of episodes, so we found it only fitting that he join us again for a look at this "recalibration" of the HALLOWEEN series. We'll discuss all of the behind-the-scenes drama that lead to the making of the film following the 2009 release of Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 (and the unmade sequels left behind in its wake), plus how the guy behind ALL THE REAL GIRLS and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS got involved in a horror film. And of course, we'll get into just how the film stacks up against its predecessors and how it fits into the current horror climate. Join us next week as we begin our countdown to our favorite film of 2019 and the announcement of your pick for Best Psychotronic Film of the year! It's the first week of June, so naturally the boys are reviewing... David Gordon Green's Halloween (2018)? This month's reviews will be part of something we're casually referring to as "Franchise Month." Essentially, the idea this month is to tackle the most recent films in long lived franchises. Streamlining the franchise canon by disregarding the events of all the Halloween films aside from the 1978 original, Halloween 2018 is a slick and pleasantly restrained entry in the series that pulls double duty as both a satisfying capstone to the series, as well as (very likely) the kickoff point for a future films. Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, badass grannie! Judy Greer as a mom! Of course! John Carpenter, returning as composer and truly fuckin' bringing it! Michael Meyers, finding time for arts and crafts in between murdering folks! "It's not a cage... It's a trey-ahp."

Movie Meltdown - Episode 460 This week we sit down for an extended discussion of David Gordon Green's Halloween. The latest in the series is sort of an attempt to be both a sequel and a reboot... but does it end up being successful at either?   And while we try to decide if we ourselves are suffering from PTSD from watching so many horror movies over the years, we also address… Tales from the Hood 2, survivor guilt, Fright, Judy Greer, new Loomis, Rob Zombie, comments from the audience, creepy mental asylum, what was great about the one woman that he killed that had the baby, becoming urban legend, missteps and poor choices, Black Christmas, the post-credits monster we’ve created, Snoop Dogg, amazingly well choreographed, it's like breathing for the rest of us, Donald Pleasence, it's not for the development of the characters it's for the development of the screenplay, John Carpenter, Andi Matichak, little kids watching horror movies, Jamie Lee Curtis, a killing machine, Trick ‘r Treat, well-funded podcasts, the Scream rules, P.J. Soles, this is just become way more interesting movies that could have happened - and didn't, it makes sense that she would be broken, Terminator 2, old ladies with short hair, we need this guy in that mask to go stab at her, VHS, a story based on more of the mythology and the legacy more so than trying to create a direct continuation of the story, the cult and green goo comes out of his eyes. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the new “Halloween” from David Gordon Green and probably a few from Carpenter’s original movie… so just go watch both of them before you listen. “There's so much potential every twenty minutes in this movie.”

The boys try to give Halloween, Halloween II, Season of The Witch and H20 their due, but it's Rob Zombie's 2007 and 2009 remakes that suffer their wrath the most.  Somehow they still manage to make time for some Terminator 2 talk, Clint Eastwood impressions and roleplay their own Halloween porn parody. So with that in mind and on the day that sees the Worldwide release of Blumhouse and David Gordon Green's Halloween, we thought that we would get in the spirit with an episode sure to get you in the mood!Episode 25 sees Andy and Mitch joined by actor (Beyond the Gates, The Minds Eye, Contracted) and director of Frightfest favourite Dementia: Part II, Matt Mercer. His chosen film? Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers! Following the relative flatness of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, the sixth instalment in the slasher franchise almost feels like a welcome breath of fresh air as it makes bold attempts to take the franchise in new directions, while ramping up the violence. Is it successful? You be the judge of that. Featuring the debut appearance of Paul Rudd, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is the last hurrah of a dying sub-genre. The Halloween film for the slasher fans just waiting for the release of Scream a year later.   The synopsis is as follows:  Since psychotic killer Michael Myers disappeared with his niece Jaime in a fire six years ago, the town of Haddonfield has been readjusting itself to come to terms with the horrors it has witnessed. Despite the warnings of psychiatrist Doctor Sam Loomis, the townsfolk are ready once again to celebrate Halloween. A shock is in store for all, however, when Michael makes a bloody return. Composer, producer, writer and director John Carpenter is regarded as one of the most influential auteur filmmakers in all of cinema. He has been behind some of the most iconic films in the horror and sci-fi genre such as Assault On Precinct 13, Halloween, Christine, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and many more. What sets John apart from most other writers and directors is that he is also the composer on his films. His music has become as iconic as the images he has brought to life onscreen. John makes his long-awaited return to the Halloween franchise that he gave birth to in 1978 by coming onboard to score and executive produce David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel. Green's film is ignoring all the sequels and picking the story up 40 years after the events of the original film. We had a small window to chat with John about his career in the industry, dating back to what made him fall in love with cinema in the first place. We touch on several subjects such as coming up with a story and what makes a great horror film. Hear stories such as what inspired the Michael Myers character, the true story of how John worked with Ennio Morricone on the The Thing, working with Alan Howarth, the difficulties of production across his films, when he starts the composing process on his films, and how he collaborated with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies to co-score the newest chapter in the Halloween franchise. It was such an honor to have this brief and engaging chat with one of the greatest storytellers of cinema.   We said we would be doing more of these as and when we deem it necessary and so, true to our word, we come again! This time bearing BONUSODE 2!  Celluloid Screams, Sheffield's horror festival, returns next month for its tenth instalment and on Friday, announced the full line-up for this year's festival which runs from the 18th-21st October at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield.  Man, oh man! What a line-up it is. Festival director Rob Nevitt and the team have put together one of the most remarkable genre film festival line-ups we have seen in recent years, featuring an exclusive preview screening of Blumhouse and David Gordon Green's Halloween, Nicolas Cage topping out his insano-meter in Panos Cosmatos' Mandy and an IN FULL screening of Wellington Paranormal, the new TV series, spun from past Celluloid selection, What We Do In The Shadows.  That's just the tip of the iceberg. The full schedule can be found below...   One tiny suggestion? At the time of recording, there were extremely limited weekend passes available. If you want to be at one of the best festivals, not just in the UK but anywhere, then you better strike now. Get your ticket. Andy and Mitch will be attending for the duration.  See you there!  You can grab tickets and find out more info on the festival at their website.    Please note that this podcast may contain strong language and even stronger Scottish accents.  Remember, you can keep up to date with our news by following us via the usual social media outlets:  Facebook Twitter Instagram Plus you can drop us an email to stronglanguageviolentscenes@gmail.com.
