This week we're discussing Lost Themes IV: Noir, the latest album by legendary movie director John Carpenter. Collaborating with his son, Cody Carpenter and his godson, Daniel Davies, this is Carpenter's fourth album and it's a ton of fun. Like previous Lost Themes albums, there are a ton of synths, 80s rock guitars, and driving electronic rhythms. Is it reinventing the wheel? Definitely not. But it's well done and scratches a specific itch.Closing track: "The Demon's Shadow"Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTube, AppleSubstackWebsite

Precinct 13: The Movies and Music of John Carpenter

Hello out there, and welcome back! As promised, Chris and Nick have returned with an all-new episode to discuss Halloween Ends, the final film in David Gordon Green's sequel trilogy that's now out in theaters and on Peacock. Like every Halloween fan out there, we've got some thoughts on this unique and highly divisive horror film, featuring an original score by John Carpenter (with his usual collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies) as well as what is -- supposedly -- the very last on-screen appearance of Jamie Lee Curtis as babysitter, massacre survivor, and, uh, pumpkin pie baker Laurie Strode. We really enjoyed being back to talk all things Carpenter once again, and we hope you'll join us for an in-depth, occasionally rather heated talk about the final (?) chapter in the franchise that he and Debra Hill kicked off back in 1978. Enjoy, and, if you're a horror fan, please join us on our new show, The Shuddering (shudderingpod.simplecast.com)!Be warned: MAJOR SPOILERS for Halloween Ends beginning at 36:10 on this episode! Precinct 13: The Movies and Music of John Carpenter

We're BACK -- and sooner, rather than later! After wrapping up the show proper, we promised to check back in any time there was a good reason to do so, and the recent release of Firestarter is exactly that! Why, you ask? Well, most importantly, the Stephen King adaptation features a brand new score composed by none other than John Carpenter, and it features his regular collaborators Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies from his album, soundtrack, and live concert projects. Plus, the film was written by Halloween Kills scribe Scott Teems, and -- as we're sure you've heard us talk about -- back in the early 80s, Carpenter himself was originally tapped to direct the earlier Firestarter film that ended up in the hands of another director.  So, those were more than enough reasons for Chris and Nick to get back into the saddle and revive the show for what we hope is the first of MANY returns to the Carpenter-centric conversation! So, join us for this "bonus" episode, and please check out our new podcast, The Shuddering, when it launches very soon!

CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of underage romance, sexism, war, trauma. We continue our musical series with a movie that some consider the worst Best Picture winner of all time. And while we might not go that far, the fact that this beat out A Place in the Sun and A Streetcar Named Desire for top honors in both production AND writing at the Oscars is near-highway-robbery. To be clear - this film is a technical marvel, and its historical and artistic value are justified. The last 20 minutes of this film is one of the most beautiful, influential pieces of cinema of all time. Yet this movie does none of the work to earn the sweeping production value and emotion created in that magical ballet, steadfastly refusing to focus on an actual story with actual stakes. This movie should be a melodrama, or a musical comedy, but instead it winds up being neither, and it's a total mess. Except for the dancing, God, the dancing. A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:   This week I'm welcoming back Dr. Dafydd Fell to talk about the SOAS Center of Taiwan Studies at the University of London. They just had their summer school program in July, which is free and open to the public. It's a tremendous resource for people interested in learning more about Taiwan. The program included speakers on the topics of Taiwan's anti-nuclear movement, environmental activism and movements, Taiwan's Post New Wave Cinema, how to write about Taiwan for a general audience, the campaign to end the death penalty in Taiwan, just to name a few. You can check out their YouTube channel which has videos from the summer school program and other SOAS Center of Taiwan Studies events. Dr. Fell and I talked about how Taiwan studies has changed over the past 20 years and some of the challenges faced by Taiwan studies programs in general.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:   The establishment of the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program at the University of London How there weren't any other Taiwan Studies programs in Europe when the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program at the University of London was established in 1999 SOAS Taiwan Studies program was founded by Professor Robert Ash Establishment of European Association of Taiwan Studies in 2004 Taiwan Studies programs in Europe How we are currently in a Golden Age of Taiwan Studies Taiwan studies programs in Europe vs. the U.S. The collaboration between SOAS Taiwan Studies program and the University of Texas at Austin Taiwan Studies program The challenges faced by Taiwan Studies programs How the SOAS Taiwan Studies program's focuses on Taiwan Studies teaching  programs and publication (of books that come out of conferences) The types of classes and programs offered at the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program Prominent political figures from Taiwan that have been invited to speak at SOAS The second world congress of Taiwan Studies at SOAS (with 80 speakers and 500 in person attendees) How the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program organizes 50-70 events per year How the events present interesting opportunities for students to actually meet some of the figures on their reading lists What graduates of the SOAS Taiwan Studies Program have gone on to do The major research contributions that have some out of SOAS Taiwan Studies Program The challenges of funding Taiwan Studies programs Whether more Taiwan Studies degree programs will be developed worldwide The relationship between Chinese and Taiwanese studies programs The SOAS Taiwan Studies Program Summer School which has been running since 2007   Related Links:   SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies' website: http://www.soas.ac.uk/taiwanstudies/   SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies' Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/   SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies' Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwlZZGmE1e_6PI2e-HOPOQw   Professor Robert Ash: https://www.soas.ac.uk/staff/staff30582.php   European Association of Taiwan Studies: https://www.eats-taiwan.eu/   North American Taiwan Studies Association (NATSA): https://www.na-tsa.org/   International Journal of Taiwan Studies: https://brill.com/view/journals/ijts/ijts-overview.xml   Taiwan Studies program at the University of Texas at Austin: https://liberalarts.utexas.edu/eastasia/asian-studies-at-ut/Taiwan-program.php   Brill Series in Taiwan Studies: https://brill.com/view/serial/BSTS   Routledge Research on Taiwan Series: https://www.routledge.com/Routledge-Research-on-Taiwan-Series/book-series/RRTAIWAN   Camphor Press: https://camphorpress.com/   Taiwan Studies Revisited, Edited By Dafydd Fell, Hsin-Huang Michael Hsiao: https://www.routledge.com/Taiwan-Studies-Revisited/Fell-Hsiao/p/book/9780367201722 Taiwan's Contemporary Indigenous Peoples, Edited By Chia-yuan Huang, Daniel Davies, Dafydd Fell: https://www.routledge.com/Taiwans-Contemporary-Indigenous-Peoples/Huang-Davies-Fell/p/book/9780367553579   Tsai Ing-wen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsai_Ing-wen   Peng Min-Ming: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peng_Ming-min   Frank Hsieh: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Hsieh   Su Tseng-chang: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Su_Tseng-chang   Second World Congress of Taiwan Studies held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) June 18-20, 2015: https://www.soas.ac.uk/news/newsitem94890.html   Reflections on the Second World Congress of Taiwan Studies (held in 2015): https://www.soas.ac.uk/news/newsitem104787.htxml   Academia Sinica: https://www.sinica.edu.tw/en   Hakka singer Lin Sheng-hsiang: https://www.soas.ac.uk/taiwanstudies/events/07jul2016-music-of-lin-sheng-hsiang.html   SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies 2021 Summer School program: https://www.soas.ac.uk/taiwanstudies/summerschool/   The Fourth World Congress of Taiwan Studies (2022) in Seattle, Washington, USA: https://wcts.sinica.edu.tw/wctsIV/zWelcome.html

Among the many things we'd been looking forward to in the year of 2021 was the release of Lost Themes III: Alive After Death, the third collection of John Carpenter's original, non-soundtrack musical compositions. And, now that it's here, we can safely say -- and Chris DOES say so, more than once -- that this album is an absolute banger! We got to hear a lot of these tracks when they were released as singles last year, but your humble hosts and Carpenter aficionados think this album is best enjoyed in its entirety. Nick and Chris do another track-by-track review and commentary of this Sacred Bones Records release, and along the way, we imagine the cinematic visions this music might inspire, consider the locked-in groove that Carpenter and his band (son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies) have established over several albums, and even figure out the correct pronunciation of Moog! Plus, Chris braves the brutal world of Australian horror filmmaker Greg McLean, Nick has a bloody good time with an Italian slasher-movie classic, and we celebrate another one of our favorite cinematic composers, Trent Reznor.

In 1978, John Carpenter wrote, directed, and scored the film Halloween. It was made on a $300,000 budget, and ended up grossing over $70 million, making it one of the most successful independent movies ever released. The main theme to the film became one of the most iconic pieces of cinematic music ever made. *Halloween *became a franchise with ten more Halloween films since the original. In 2018 a new Halloween film was released, directed by David Gordon Green. And for the first time since the first film, John Carpenter composed the score. That included remaking his theme song for the new film, this time with the help of his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies. In this episode, the three of them break down how they did it. songexploder.net/halloween

Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan take a trip to Haddonfield, Illinois for another round with The Shape by talking about the true sequel to Halloween...that's also called Halloween. Can David Gordon Green's sequel live up to the hype of John Carpenter's endorsement and involvement? How do the themes match up to the original's spare template? Is it too funny? We ended up talking about some important bits of media including Mike Flanagan's astonishing Netflix miniseries, The Haunting of Hill House. Dylan talks about the overall feeling of the series and how it may be Flanagan's best work since Oculus. Dylan also watched...Shane Dawson's new YouTube documentary series, The Mind of Jake Paul (is that correct? Can someone make sure we got the correct information?) He talks about whether it can match up to a general documentary as well as any and every ethical boundary it may have crossed. Chris got out there to inform us on two Netflix original films, The Night Comes For Us and Illang: The Wolf Brigade. Can there be a world where a movie directed by Timo Tjahjanto can be better than a film directed by Kim Jee-woon? Quite possibly. Next week, Chris and Dylan decided to inform the other with some horror films they haven't seen. Chris chose Paranoiac and Happy Death Day for Dylan to see and Dylan chose Blood Feast and Possession for Chris to watch. Look out for our Halloween special! Composer, producer, writer and director John Carpenter is regarded as one of the most influential auteur filmmakers in all of cinema. He has been behind some of the most iconic films in the horror and sci-fi genre such as Assault On Precinct 13, Halloween, Christine, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and many more. What sets John apart from most other writers and directors is that he is also the composer on his films. His music has become as iconic as the images he has brought to life onscreen. John makes his long-awaited return to the Halloween franchise that he gave birth to in 1978 by coming onboard to score and executive produce David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel. Green's film is ignoring all the sequels and picking the story up 40 years after the events of the original film. We had a small window to chat with John about his career in the industry, dating back to what made him fall in love with cinema in the first place. We touch on several subjects such as coming up with a story and what makes a great horror film. Hear stories such as what inspired the Michael Myers character, the true story of how John worked with Ennio Morricone on the The Thing, working with Alan Howarth, the difficulties of production across his films, when he starts the composing process on his films, and how he collaborated with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies to co-score the newest chapter in the Halloween franchise. It was such an honor to have this brief and engaging chat with one of the greatest storytellers of cinema. Daniel Davies of the Genizah Research Unit sheds light on three very different lives by reading the private documents of the legendary philosopher Maimonides, community leader Solomon ben Judah and Indian Ocean trader Abraham ben Yiju,They are all from the Genizah papers. The Cairo Genizah is a treasure trove of manuscripts from the Ben Ezra synagogue in Old Cairo that portrays over 800 years of community life. Rediscovered in the 19th century, this vast communal paper-bin contained hundreds upon thousands of scraps of rag-paper and parchment - an unedited archive of prayers, letters, poems, magical spells, alchemical recipes, children's exercise books, divorce deeds and pre-nuptial agreements that paints a lively and intimate picture of daily medieval life in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean.Produced by Michele Banal and Miranda Hinkley.First broadcast in May 2013.
