Ezra Jin said eight of his church members are still in prison, in rough conditions. He wrote that “[They] are confined in cramped cells and sleep on floor mats in blistering heat. Many leave behind young families. I won't rest until they see freedom.” Throughout the day, the Christians were required to sit on hard benches and could not stand up without requesting permission of the authorities. The pastor further stated, “These Christians love their nation. They only want to worship God peacefully, according to the Bible, and to serve others, especially the poor, the disabled, and the elderly.” 900 people in Congo, Africa have died from E-bola That E-bola outbreak in Congo, Africa has now killed over 900 people and will soon be the second worst E-bola outbreak in history. At least 36 health workers have contracted the disease and died in the outbreak. Samaritan's Purse has two treatment centers operating right now in the Congo. At least one of the ministry workers has been diagnosed with the disease, and is being treated in Frankfurt, Germany. State Secretary Marco Rubio denounces leftist political violence Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke at a summit on political terrorism attended by representatives from more than 60 countries. Rubio explained the culture of violence and revolution that is on the rise with the Left, both in the United States and across the world.  Listen. Bush's two children, and Barack Obama's two children. 7,000 Americans contracted cyclospora virus, many from Taco Bell Here in the states as many as 7,000 Americans are suspected to have contracted the cyclospora virus, a parasitic disease producing weeks of diarrhea. The Associated Press reports that federal health officials have identified lettuce from Mexico served at Taco Bell locations across five U.S. states as a source. Last Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned consumers not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell restaurants in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia. A record number of cyclospora cases have been reported in more than 30 states. The FDA's traceback investigation identified a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico. Officials suspect that the lettuce was watered with feces-contaminated water. So far, the disease is most prevalent in New York, Michigan, and North Carolina. Republicans wants to curtail surveillance Flock cameras Conservative Republicans in the United States House of Representatives put forward a bill to curtail the surveillance being conducted through devices such as Flock cameras. The bill, filed by Republican Congressman Keith Self of Texas, would force police departments to obtain a warrant to search through camera data and license plate readers when looking for criminals.  Representative Self explained, “Americans' Fourth Amendment right to be secure in their privacy does not disappear just because of new technology or artificial intelligence. Americans have a constitutional right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, and our government is supposed to get a warrant before invading that privacy. This bill simply restores that protection.”  As of 2025, Flock is used by over 6,000 municipalities in the United States. The company had raised a total of $950 million in venture funding, with a $7.5 billion valuation. Court: Amish parents cannot abstain from school vaccinations The U.S. Second Court of Appeals ruled against the Amish community in New York, which had sued to abstain from school vaccinations. The ruling strips parents of their right to abstain from school vaccinations for their children due to religious reasons.  The New American pointed out, “Should the case reach the Supreme Court of the United States, as legal experts expect, the decision could have nationwide implications for religious exemptions in all 45 states that currently allow them for school vaccines.” America's hot summer It's a hot summer, especially in the Western states. Billings, Montana topped out at a record 111 degrees on Sunday. Salt Lake City also set record temperatures. And ABC News reports that 100 million Americans will experience extreme temperatures this week. Forecasters are expecting 20-30 degrees hotter than the average temperatures. Aspen Fires in Colorado burned 100,000 acres The Colorado Aspen Acres Fire is the biggest fire in the country thus far — burning down 100,000 acres, reports The Colorado Sun. The Pacific Northwest has two big fires raging now as well. First, the Hay Creek Complex fire has burned over 92,000 acres, and the Rowe Creek Complex fire has burned 36,000 acres. Spain wins Soccer's World Cup On Sunday, Spain beat Argentia 1-0 in the final World Cup soccer game, reports ABC News. ANNOUNCER: “At long, long last, Spain's magic moment. Spain are the champions. A second American humanitarian worker who contracted the Bundibugyo Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been safely evacuated and admitted to Frankfurt University Hospital in Germany. This transfer was organized after U.S. authorities sought assistance to facilitate quicker medical treatment in a specialized high-level isolation unit.German health officials, including Dr. Timo Wolf, who leads the special isolation unit, have confirmed that the patient is in stable condition and is receiving excellent early treatment. The individual is being kept in complete isolation—segregated from the rest of the facility—and poses no risk to the general public or other patients.The U.S. State Department and the World Health Organization (WHO) coordinated the transfer to Germany instead of directly to the United States for two main reasons:The flight duration from the DRC to Europe is considerably shorter than a trans-Atlantic flight to the United States. Given that evacuation conditions can be precarious, a shorter transport route to high-quality care is prioritized for critical cases. Additionally, Germany has a specialized network of high-level isolation units specifically designed for managing highly infectious diseases, which includes advanced air filtration systems, on-site wastewater decontamination, and fully inflated protective suits worn by medical personnel.This evacuation takes place amid an ongoing outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain in eastern DRC. According to the latest statistics, there are over 1,900 confirmed cases and more than 700 confirmed deaths in the country. Due to the absence of a widely approved vaccine or cure specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, early clinical management and isolation are essential.  This incident marks the second occasion in recent months that a U.S. citizen has been evacuated from Congo to Germany for Ebola treatment, following the successful recovery of an American doctor at Charité University Hospital in Berlin in May.The CDC has put a temporary halt on entry into the United States for foreign nationals who have recently been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan. However, U.S. citizens and green card holders are allowed to enter but must arrive at designated airports, such as Washington-Dulles and Atlanta, for enhanced screening procedures. All individuals returning must engage in self-monitoring for a period of 21 days.At present, there are no authorized vaccines or specific treatments available for this particular strain. The vaccines that were effective during previous outbreaks were designed for the Zaire strain and do not provide protection against the current strain.

It's built around the owner's specific situation: their age, their family's ages, their life stage, and what they actually want their next chapter to look like.Understanding the numbers: wealth gap vs. value gapLaurie walks through two key calculations every business owner should understand:The wealth gapThis is the difference between what you need for retirement and what you currently have. Many business owners have most of their net worth tied up in their company, which means selling the business isn't just an exit; it's a financial planning event. The net proceeds (after taxes, transaction fees, and other costs) need to be factored into the nest egg calculation. As Laurie reminds us, it's the net number that counts, not the headline price.The value gapOnce you know your wealth gap, you can figure out what your business needs to be worth—and compare that to what it's actually worth today. The difference is the value gap. Closing that gap is the work of exit planning.What buyers are actually buyingOne of Laurie's most counterintuitive insights: when you're selling your business, stop thinking about your products and services. Start thinking about what problem your company solves for another company.Buyers, particularly strategic buyers, are acquiring capabilities, not catalogs. They might want your customer list, your talent, your geographic footprint, your intellectual property, or your distribution network. A European acquirer once offered Andrew a revenue multiple (not EBITDA) because he didn't care about the coffee margins. He wanted the distribution infrastructure to pour his own volume through.That's a strategic buyer making a strategic bet. Understanding who might want to buy you, and why, should shape how you build and present your business years before any transaction.Transferable assets: do an inventory nowOne of the most actionable practices Laurie recommends is a transferable assets audit. Go through every major asset in your business (contracts, customer relationships, intellectual property, talent, equipment) and rate each on a scale of 1 to 5 for how transferable it is to a new owner.A score of 1 isn't a crisis. It's a to-do item—one you can now address if you start the process early enough.A common example: contracts that aren't transferable. Many business owners have never thought about whether their agreements include a transferability clause. Without one, a sale can be significantly complicated. With a transferability clause added proactively at renewal, the problem simply goes away.Keep your financial records in orderAnother practical piece of advice comes from Andrew's observations of businesses in Thailand, echoed by Laurie's US experience: messy financial records are a serious exit liability.Buyers expect the last three full years of clean financials, current year data, and a credible forecast. If your monthly books aren't closed, your expense categories are inconsistent across years, or your numbers are tied up with personal expenses, you've created friction in the due diligence process. This friction costs you time, trust, and money.Laurie recommends moving toward reviewed financials as an early milestone. For many businesses, it's not a high incremental cost, and it signals credibility to buyers.Lessons learnedDon't wait to plan your exit until you're ready to exit. By that point, it's already too late to make meaningful improvements to the business. Start five to seven years out.Personal readiness matters as much as business readiness. Too many owners focus entirely on the company and are blindsided by the emotional and lifestyle changes that come with stepping back.Know your wealth gap and your value gap. These two numbers are the foundation of any honest exit plan.Buyers buy on their timeline, not yours. When someone comes calling, they're ready. You may not be. The goal of exit planning is to close that readiness gap before the call comes.Recurring revenue commands a premium, but know the difference between recurring and reoccurring. Contracted, predictable cash flows are what buyers pay top dollar for.Take an inventory of your transferable assets. Find the gaps now, while you still have time to close them.Clean, consistent financial records are non-negotiable. Start with reviewed financials and build from there.Andrew's takeawaysProfitability and growth are both required. Profitability without growth isn't particularly valuable, and growth without profitability doesn't justify the premium either. It's the combination that drives multiple expansion.The $25 million revenue threshold is a real inflection point in buyer perception. Delegation increases your business's scalability and protects you from burnout. If no one else can run your sales, operations, or administration, you become a bottleneck. Strong leadership involves building a team that can take on the business's responsibilities.  Clean Financials Buyers look for clarity, transparency, and realistic compensation structures. Messy books reduce confidence and valuation. Always separate your personal expenses from your professional expenses. Maintain a clean profit and loss for the last three years, at least. Understand your margins per project. Create cash flow plans for every confirmed project and consolidate them into a company-wide forecast. Strategic Positioning Know your niche. Be clear on how you differentiate yourself. A "me too" business competes on price, and a strategically positioned business competes on value. Brand equity, specialization, and a clear point of difference will increase your profitability and make your business more attractive to buyers. Join us as Jessica dives into the critical work she does at the rehab, debunking common trimming myths and highlighting the crucial importance of proper hoof care.Many Cases Go UndiagnosedOwners and professionals alike should be vigilant and proactive, as subclinical laminitis often goes unnoticed. Many horses can have inflammation without full-blown laminitic episodes, and even minor hoof distortion, recurring abscesses, or poor posture may be early signs. Inflammation Hoof inflammation starts before any rotation or visible damage occurs. It typically results from systemic stress, poor nutrition, or mechanical imbalance. While X-rays may not reveal early changes, heat, soreness, gait alterations, or behavioral changes can indicate trouble brewing inside the foot.Movement and Circulation Stabling a sore horse may seem protective, but confinement reduces circulation and delays healing. Movement is crucial to restoring hoof health. Gentle, controlled exercise within the comfort zone of the horse, often with the help of boots, can significantly improve blood flow and tissue regeneration.BootsBoots help reduce inflammation and promote healing, allowing sore horses to move more comfortably. However, they are not a permanent solution. Avoid Over-trimming Trimming should preserve the sole and reduce leverage without forcing the foot into an artificial shape. Over-trimming or removing too much sole worsens instability.Be Cautious with Certain TreatmentsCorrosive thrush treatments may kill bacteria but can also damage live tissue, making reinfection more likely. Non-corrosive antimicrobials can restore microbial balance without damaging sensitive tissue, soothing the foot, and helping to reset its microbial environment. Consistency and gentle application are the key.Gut Health Thrush and white line disease can recur when gut health is compromised. High-sugar, high-starch diets fuel inflammation and weaken hoof tissue from the inside. Horses fed low-NSC diets will often show rapid hoof improvement. In some cases, long-standing issues like contracted heels and white line disease will resolve completely within months of a diet change.Lasting ChangeLasting hoof changes must be supported from the inside, as no trim can undo the effects of a poor diet. Contracted heels, long toes, and weak hoof structures are often diet-driven. Even horses that have been trimmed carefully for years may not improve until their processed feeds get replaced with low-sugar alternatives. The Power of MovementMovement is essential for healing hooves. Even sore horses should be allowed to move freely within their comfort range. Boots can encourage movement, reducing pain and enabling gradual increases in circulation and use. Metal ShoesMetal shoes may provide instant relief for some horses. However, they increase concussion and vibration, which can worsen laminitic damage over time. The for-profit prison company GEO is doing very well financially. It runs 16 facilities around the country including the ICE detention center in Tacoma, and its stock price doubled after Election Day.  With the number of ICE detainees now at a five-year high under President Donald Trump, how people are being treated and compensated for their labor is as much an issue as it ever was. The company was paying detainees a dollar a day to do cleaning and other jobs that it would otherwise have to pay contract workers at minimum wage to do. Washington state sued the company for not paying the state’s minimum wage, and won in federal court in 2021, a decision that was affirmed earlier this year by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The company petitioned last month for a rehearing of its appeal by all 9th Circuit judges. McKenzie Funk is following this story for ProPublica and joins us with the details.
