ICE-contracted prison company that runs Tacoma facility center wants to pay detainees $1 a day

The for-profit prison company GEO is doing very well financially. It runs 16 facilities around the country including the ICE detention center in Tacoma, and its stock price doubled after Election Day.  With the number of ICE detainees now at a five-year high under President Donald Trump, how people are being treated and compensated for their labor is as much an issue as it ever was. The company was paying detainees a dollar a day to do cleaning and other jobs that it would otherwise have to pay contract workers at minimum wage to do. Washington state sued the company for not paying the state’s minimum wage, and won in federal court in 2021, a decision that was affirmed earlier this year by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The company petitioned last month for a rehearing of its appeal by all 9th Circuit judges. McKenzie Funk is following this story for ProPublica and joins us with the details.

Josh Ethier is a film editor who has become a household name in horror. Josh is the editing force behind such films as: Contracted, Some Kind of Hate, We are Still Here, Mayhem, Leatherface, Bliss, VFW, Orphan First Kill, Christmas Bloody Christmas, The Seventh Day, Gretel and Hansel, Don't Breathe and most recently Companion which he edited alongside Brett Bachman. In this episode, Josh gets into his career history, editing process, collaborations with filmmakers like Joe Begos and Osgood Perkins and the story behind the recently released Companion, which is one of my favorite horror movies in a long time. This is a really insightful conversation that I really enjoyed and think you will as well. Please welcome, Josh Ethier! Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with JoshLook for the Note Behind the NoteAudience feedback can be a double-edged sword—sometimes useful, sometimes misleading. Josh learned early on from Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) that feedback isn't about taking every note literally but understanding the note behind the note which requires deeper analysis. For instance, on Companion, early test screenings showed that one character was getting lower audience scores. Instead of softening the character, they leaned into the audience's dislike and committed to it—embracing the audience's reaction rather than trying to cater to feedback. As a result, the character actually scored higher in later tests.Editing is a “Four-Month Conversation” Between Director and EditorThe relationship between an editor and a director is one of the most intimate creative partnerships in filmmaking. Josh emphasizes that the strongest director-editor teams are built on genuine relationships, which is why socializing and getting to know each other outside of the work is just as important as the technical process. The best collaborations happen when an editor and director truly understand each other's creative DNA—the movies that inspire them, their sense of humor, their artistic instincts, and how they think about storytelling. The editing room isn't just where cuts are made; it's where creative risks are taken, where directors feel safe enough to experiment, and where an editor helps guide them toward their best possible work. The more an editor and director understand each other, the better they can anticipate each other's needs, develop a shorthand, challenge each other in the right ways, and ultimately make the movie stronger.Immerse Yourself in QualityJosh believes that editors—and all filmmakers—should obsessively watch and absorb great films. But instead of overanalyzing or attempting to reverse-engineer their greatness, the key is exposure. Some films are great because they have an innate rhythm, a unique DNA that can't simply be replicated. Rather than trying to deconstruct and apply a formula, internalize their essence. Understand what great filmmaking feels like, so when it comes time to shape your own work, you instinctively recognize when something is working—and when it's not. This is also a common piece of creative advice given by Rick Rubin, and I highly recommend his book The Creative Act.SHOW NOTESMovies DiscussedCompanion (2024)Almost Human (2013)Contracted (2013)Gretel & Hansel (2020)We Are Still Here (2015)First Blood (1982)Jaws (1975)Seven (1995)Looper (2012)Books & ResourcesIn the Blink of an Eye – Walter MurchThe Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film – Michael OndaatjeEasy Riders, Raging Bulls – Peter...

As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. Why RiversZen Contracted Stretching Is More Effective Than Slow Eccentric Weight Lifting

If you're familiar with weight lifting at all, you know that the strengthening phase of any exercise is the concentric movement—the part where you lift the weight. And the release? That's called the eccentric movement. It's when you lower the weight slowly, controlling the movement.Instead of a special stretching technique why not just focus on the eccentric phase of weight lifting?Seems like a solid plan, right?Well, here's the thing. While the eccentric phase is important, it's only part of the equation. When it comes to stretching muscles and building strength at the same time, you need something more. And the answer is simple—it takes twice the force to stretch a muscle as it does to build one. Yep, twice. That's why a piece of equipment, no matter how fancy or expensive, could never duplicate the power of your body's own resistance. Nothing compares to it!Think about it. When you contract a muscle while you stretch, you're using your body's natural resistance. This makes stretching not only more effective but also much more powerful than simply lifting weights. No machine, no tool can mimic that. The best tool you have is right here—your own body. So, why settle for half the benefit when you could have it all? Here's something to try: The next time you're doing a stretch, any stretch, focus on contracting the muscle as you go deeper into the stretch. Feel the difference. Now pull out of it making the muscle work the entire way. That's your body working with you, not against you.Give it a shot today. Your body will thank you!Until we talk again move well, stay healthy, be happy, find your purpose and live every single day with passion. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. You hear me talk about it all of the time… so let's talk about one of our favorite techniques: RiversZen Contracted Stretching.Sometimes we call it resistance stretching, but that seems to confuse folks. Most people think we're talking about those stretchy resistance bands. Nope, that's not it at all!Contracted Stretching is something different and very special. It's all about contracting the muscle while you stretch. Sounds simple, right? But trust me, this little twist makes all the difference. This technique doesn't just stretch your muscles, it builds strength and flexibility at the same time. It's one of those great 2 for 1 deals. We've seen it work wonders for people of all ages. 85-year-old grandmas, great grandmas, have used it to regain ease of movement. Professional athletes have used it to improve their explosive power and totally up their game. And guess what? We've worked with both and seen the amazing results first hand! This isn't just some new fad. We've been using Contracted Stretching since 2007, and let me tell you—it saved our aching bodies. Years of sports injuries, had us hurting pretty bad. Surgeries were in our future, but this technique turned everything around. It's that powerful. Now here's your challenge: Think of one area of your body that feels stiff or tight. Today, give Contracted Stretching a try.Start small. Focus on contracting the muscle as you stretch it. You might be surprised at how good it feels—and how quickly you start noticing a difference!Your body deserves to move with ease, no matter your age.So, why not start now?Need help? Watch for future installments where I'll be posting videos where you can stretch with the oldie :-)Couldn't resist, I put on a 50s playlist for class a couple of days ago and wanted to channel Richard Simmons… he used to call his classes Stretch to the Oldies. But my little slip up gave me a whole new saying… Stretch with the oldie to the oldies (I am 71 so chronologically I am an “official oldie”) With that until I talk to you next time may you move well, stay healthy, be happy, find your purpose and live with passion! To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In episode 248, Mark & Steve tackle an extremely intense and heart-breaking submission by a betrayed partner. Here's what she submitted—I have listened to many of your podcast episodes. An area I wish you would do an episode on is how is a spouse to handle it when your porn addicted/SA husband comes home and discloses (not the first time in our marriage) that he has been acting out for several years and contracted an STD. How am I supposed to forgive and get past that? I can't see ever having an intimate relationship with him. However, we have built a great life (other than his sexual addiction) over our 20+ year marriage. He shows remorse, is in therapy as am I. We have not had a Formal Therapeutic Disclosure yet but it's coming. There are a lot of aspects I'm struggling with but would love an episode on navigating an incurable STD. Sincerely, Heartbroken Spouse. Our hearts go out to this betrayed partner! In too many ways, the consequences and fallout are not only devastating upon disclosure, but also create an ongoing traumatic nightmare! There are serious, long-term and permanent medical implications at play with this example which we are not going to tackle here.IT IS CRITICAL that this couple, if they haven't already, seek immediate medical testing and treatment, as well as education regarding the issues at play and their long-term implications. What this is like for betrayed partners? The compounding effects of ”Complex Trauma”—trickled disclosure, “bomb dropping”A “painful paradox”—facing the devastation & realities of disclosure and PAST/ONGOING trauma while at the same time—”We have built a great life over our 20+ years of marriage”What is authentic for her going forward—her wants and her needs; what is she willing to do and not do; VERY SPECIFIC BOUNDARIES around this! What is this like for the porn/sex addict?WHEN the addict is ALL in and doing the WORK, the CONSEQUENCES & OUTCOMES of his past choices do NOT magically go away! In some ways, this process actually INTENSIFIES! How does he PROACTIVELY meet his betrayed partner's authentic wants & needs; provide as much safety as is possible; be TRANSPARENT about his work; his learning; his progress; PROACTIVE PLANS he puts together and presents–LEAD OUT!What is he willing or not willing to “sacrifice” for this to work going forward? When these two worlds COLLIDE—Addiction & Ongoing Trauma—how can a Couple navigate this?!Be mindful of the tendency to reactively make BIG decisions in the midst of intense emotion BEFORE the recovery & healing processes have had a truly fair chance to unfold, progress and bring about positive change. Create as safe a space as possible for OPEN, AUTHENTIC EXPRESSION & DIALOGUE—NOT avoiding, minimizing, care-taking, shutting down, etc., to escape sitting in and talking about the HARDAlthough CRAZY HARD in the midst of addiction & betrayal, TEMPORARILY pushing a “pause” button and “sitting in a state of grace” while the small, progressive steps in the process unfold. Then, having done “all” you feel you can, coming together to ask, “Are we compatible”? Can we “get” to compatibility? HOW?This will, due to the ongoing nature of the issues, NEED TO BE AN ONGOING DISCUSSION, with appropriate medical and mental health professionals involved. For a full transcript of this podcast in article format, go to:  https://www.daretoconnectnow.com/post/how-does-a-betrayed-partner-navigate-the-news-that-their-sex-addict-partner-has-contracted-an-incura

Splinter (2008), Thanatomorphose (2012), and Contracted (2013) When discussing films that deal with body horror, David Cronenberg and his work usually come up in the conversation. How can he not, when so many of his earlier films all dealt with some sort of body horror, mutations, and transformations? But there are plenty of films that go above and beyond (and even below) Cronenberg's impressive genre efforts... sometimes even making us wonder why we're watching them in the first place! Could it be that we just want to see how much grossness we can stomach? Or is there more to it? Body horror is one of the most horrific of horror's subgenres, tossing heaping handfuls of disgust into the usual bag of scares. And maybe it's the hangover from the recent global pandemic, maybe it's the fact that by a certain age all of us have watched someone close to us fight a serious illness, or maybe it's just built into us by Mother Nature, but there's something especially horrific about body horror from infection.  But what do we get from watching it? Disgust, discomfort, and maybe a deeper understanding of human experience and anxieties? We can for sure guarantee the first two- so let's dig in! Disclaimer: by the end of the episode, you will be forgiven if you catch yourself looking at your body in a full-length mirror thinking "well, at least no maggots fell out of there." Movies mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Body Melt (1993), Carcinoma (2014), Contracted (2013), Creepshow (1982), The Fly (1986), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), The Grudge 3 (2009), House of Wax (2005), Immaculate (2024), The Machinist (2004), Slime City (1988), Splinter (2008), Street Trash (1987), Thanatomorphose (2012), The Thing (1982), Toxic Avenger (1984)

This week we're happy to welcome Tim Lewis to the studio, a first-time dad to a four-month-old. Join us as Tim shares the scary story of when baby Ophelia got sick with RSV around the end of last year. After initially going to Mercy in Springfield, doctors later needed to airlift Ophelia to an ER in Kansas City. Tim also provides his wisdom for new parents and discusses the importance of being on the same page to work collaboratively with your partner.  Our Guest: Tim Lewis  Tim Lewis is a barber by occupation and is a new dad to Ophelia, who was born in September 2023. Tim, his wife, Chelsea, Ophelia and Boone the dog live in Rogersville, MO. For a long time, Tim and Chelsea never imagined wanting kids, but their attitudes changed in their early 40s.   Show Notes (4:28) My advice to younger people is: If you're not sure, enjoy your youth a little bit. Your freedom is minimized once you have a child. (6:10) She developed a little bit of a cough, and we just kept an eye on it. And then it was, like, 'Nah, she needs to go do the doctor.' And they basically test kids just like they do for COVID. It's a pretty quick little swab. (9:33) I wasn't afraid for her life—I really felt she would be okay—but when the flight nurses came in and basically strapped my 13-pound child to a gurney-looking thing and took her away ... Which, my wife was with her, but, you know, it was just terrifying. (17:55) She's always a pretty happy kid. She really started all that at about three months. But she's also a very impatient, cranky child ... How do you go from grinning at me, and two seconds later you're squalling?!     The Good Dads Blog
