On this episode of Cinedicate, we unearth an ancient secret in the Antarctic tundra. Doug Levinson, a screenplay writer, joins this week to talk about a recent horror screenplay he penned and John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi horror, The Thing. John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape From New York) modernizing the sci-fi creature feature from 1951 The Thing From Another World, The Thing is a story of a remote research group that uncovers the find of the century – alien life. After contact, the alien parasite infects the crew one by one. Captain MacReady (Kurt Russell, The Hateful Eight and Marvel's The Guardians of the Galaxy) is left to protect the research group from an invisible enemy.

Welcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption.Episode Number 35: THE THING (1982)This week's episode...it's a classic, everyone: JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING. If you've not watched this one, do so immediately and check back with us. It's an all-time great sci-fi/horror mashup. Directed by the amazing John Carpenter (HALLOWEEN, THE FOG), and starring Kurt Russell (BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, TOMBSTONE), Wilford Brimley (COCOON, DIABEETUS COMMERCIALS), Keith David (THEY LIVE, ROAD HOUSE), and the incredible special effects of Rob Bottin (THE HOWLING, ROBOCOP).How do you think THE THING ranks among John Carpenter's filmography? How about within the classics of the science fiction and horror genres?Send us your thoughts to chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.com.

In 1978, John Carpenter wrote, directed, and scored the film Halloween. It was made on a $300,000 budget, and ended up grossing over $70 million, making it one of the most successful independent movies ever released. The main theme to the film became one of the most iconic pieces of cinematic music ever made. *Halloween *became a franchise with ten more Halloween films since the original. In 2018 a new Halloween film was released, directed by David Gordon Green. And for the first time since the first film, John Carpenter composed the score. That included remaking his theme song for the new film, this time with the help of his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies. In this episode, the three of them break down how they did it. songexploder.net/halloween

Composer, producer, writer and director John Carpenter is regarded as one of the most influential auteur filmmakers in all of cinema. He has been behind some of the most iconic films in the horror and sci-fi genre such as Assault On Precinct 13, Halloween, Christine, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and many more. What sets John apart from most other writers and directors is that he is also the composer on his films. His music has become as iconic as the images he has brought to life onscreen. John makes his long-awaited return to the Halloween franchise that he gave birth to in 1978 by coming onboard to score and executive produce David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel. Green's film is ignoring all the sequels and picking the story up 40 years after the events of the original film. We had a small window to chat with John about his career in the industry, dating back to what made him fall in love with cinema in the first place. We touch on several subjects such as coming up with a story and what makes a great horror film. Hear stories such as what inspired the Michael Myers character, the true story of how John worked with Ennio Morricone on the The Thing, working with Alan Howarth, the difficulties of production across his films, when he starts the composing process on his films, and how he collaborated with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies to co-score the newest chapter in the Halloween franchise. It was such an honor to have this brief and engaging chat with one of the greatest storytellers of cinema.
