It was the worst of times for Daredevil; it was the best of times for his readers! It was 1986, and comics auteur Frank Miller was making his second pass at writing Marvel's Daredevil series, accompanied this time by master draftsman David Mazzucchelli as artist. What Miller accomplished over seven revolutionary issues (Daredevil #227-233), collectively titled 'Born Again,' was the total decimation of Matt Murdock's life and Murdock's subsequent triumphant resurgence, in a masterful tale steeped in hardboiled crime fiction and Christian allegory. Join our CGS literary circle (including Doctors of Daredevology Chris Eberle and Kevin Moyer) in an examination of this deft deconstruction and reconstruction of one of Marvel's iconic characters. In this episode, Louis Rosen, Reference Librarian and Associate Professor of Law Library at Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law, discusses his article "The Lawyer as Superhero: How Marvel Comics' Daredevil Depicts the American Court System and Legal Practice," which was published in the Capital University Law Review. Rosen begins by describing the history and symbolism of Marvel's Daredevil character, a blind masked vigilante, whose alter ego is the lawyer Matt Murdock. He explains how different writers and artists have addressed the vigilante/lawyer dialectic, especially the recent writer Charles Soule, who is himself an attorney. And he reflects on how the Daredevil storyline educated popular audiences about the law and could usefully illustrate law classes. Rosen is on Twitter at @LawLibrarianLou.This episode was hosted by Brian L. Frye, Spears-Gilbert Associate Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law. Deborah Ann Woll actually came on the podcast at Sony's behest to promote the home entertainment release of her horror movie, Escape Room, but this is a genre television podcast! So we snuck in a few questions about her time as Karen Page in Marvel's Daredevil and about the topic we really wanted to discuss with her: her D&D campaign show for Geek & Sundry, Relics and Rarities. We think that, like us, you'll find her enthusiasm for tabletop gaming infectious, and since it ties in nicely with the cooperative gaming aspect of an escape room, it works as a cohesive discussion. Zach Wilson, Xia Anderson and Christian Bladt discuss all the character development in Daredevil Season 3, Episodes 5-8, including Dex, Matt, Foggy, Karen, Agent Nadim and Wilson Fisk, and where they’re all afraid this is heading. Marvel's Daredevil, or simply Daredevil, is an American web television series created for Netflix by Drew Goddard, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is the first in a series of shows that will lead up to a Defenders crossover miniseries. The series is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios, DeKnight Prods. and Goddard Textiles, with Steven S. DeKnight serving as showrunner, and Goddard acting as consultant. Charlie Cox stars as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a lawyer-by-day who fights crime at night. The series chronicles the character's early days fighting crime, juxtaposed with the rise of crime lord Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D'Onofrio.Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Bob Gunton, Ayelet Zurer, and Rosario Dawson also star. Daredevil entered development in late 2013, a year after the film rights to the character reverted to Marvel, with Goddard initially hired in December 2013. DeKnight replaced him as showrunner and Cox was hired to star in May 2014. Filming began in New York City that July, with production ending in December.
