Christine is a 1983 American supernatural horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter, and adapted from Stephen King's 1983 novel. The film stars Keith Gordon as Arnie Cunningham, a bullied teenager who buys a sentient 1958 Plymouth Fury, named "Christine", that exhibits a toxic personality and becomes a bad influence on him. John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky and Harry Dean Stanton also star. Alan Howarth also composed music for the film. Alan Howarth's award–winning film work started on Star Trek–The Motion Picture, launching him as a sound designer for the following 6 Star Trek feature films. Next was “Escape From New York”, collaborating on music with director and composer, John Carpenter, and scoring for “Halloween sequels 2–6″, “Christine”, “Big Trouble in Little China”, “Prince of Darkness” and “They Live”. He has since composed music for over 50 films. His sound design work placed him on the Oscar–winning sound effects teams for “The Hunt for Red October” and “Dracula” directed by Francis Ford Coppola, as well as receiving awards and nominations for sound design on The Little Mermaid, Back to the Future II and III, Stargate, Die Hard II, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Alan's audio expertise in music and sound has been utilized for cutting edge projects in virtual and augmented reality projects and supervised immersive, interactive game audio. He has been a creator of music and sound effects libraries and 3D audio system production and installations. He is recognized as an expert in analog synthesizers, authored several patents for Natural Frequency Spectrum Music Conversion, and has served as musicologist for Academy of Future Science doing field research into ancient structure acoustical properties. On this episode we discuss the Dario Argento directed "Jenifer" based on a comic that appears in issue #63 of the famed Creepy Magazine, by Bruce Jones and Bernie Wrightson, teleplay by Steven Weber, who additionally stars. JENIFER :originally broadcast November 18, 2005" While parked in a remote spot, eating lunch with his partner, Detective Frank Spivey saves a disfigured woman named Jenifer from being killed by a deranged homeless man. He feels sorry for Jenifer, and takes her from an insane asylum and brings her home. Frank becomes obsessed with Jenifer, feeling lust and and attraction to her. When he realizes there's more to her, he moves with her to an isolated old cabin in the woods, with tragic consequences. Alan Howarth calls himself a "Sonic composer," a cool but very accurate title for the contributions he's made to cinema. Howarth is responsible for the sound design for many of the visual effects and hardware heard in the Star Trek movies, as well as composing films across all of Hollywood. Alan takes us on his journey from rock and roller in high school into "The Weather Report" by the late 70s, and finally doing his first music composition for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," as well as the drama behind getting the movie done in time for release. Howarth peels back the curtain to tell the secrets behind the sounds for the warp engine of the Enterprise, using organic sounds to make technical sounds, the tools he implemented to create these unique effects, and the sound effect he is best known for that he refuses to use ever again! We also hear stories about the different Trek directors, including Leonard Nimoy and the bizarre demands of William Shatner, and how involved they were in his process, the tragic story behind making the sound of the whales in Star Trek 4, the sound of V'ger in TMP, and for the first time, tales of Wesley H. Bateman and encounters with UFOs!
