AI isn't arriving as a gradual workplace evolution—it's arriving as a societal shift that many leaders are still struggling to describe honestly. In this conversation, David Rice sits down with Leap Academy founder and CEO Ilana Golan to explore what happens when skills expire in one to two years, organizations expect dramatically higher productivity, and career stability becomes the exception rather than the rule.Together, they unpack why adaptability is becoming the defining professional skill, how portfolio careers may become a necessity rather than a choice, and why the future belongs to people who can continuously reinvent themselves. From the “pattern interrupt” needed to escape career pigeonholes to the practical 5-5-5 framework for making faster decisions, this episode offers a candid look at what it will take to stay relevant in an era of relentless change.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Ilana on LinkedInVisit Leap AcademySupport the show
David Kolbe argues that most organizations are only measuring two-thirds of what drives performance. We assess what people know (skills) and how they tend to behave (personality), but often ignore how they instinctively take action. That missing piece—what Kolbe calls conation—shapes how people gather information, solve problems, make decisions, and navigate uncertainty. In this conversation, David Rice and David Kolbe explore why burnout is often a mismatch problem rather than a motivation problem, why high-performing employees can be the most at risk of quietly disengaging, and why leaders who want better results may need to stop trying to standardize how work gets done and focus more on creating environments where different working styles can thrive.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with David on LinkedInVisit Kolbe CorpCheck out David's book: Do More, More NaturallySupport the show
In this week's episode, Dr. David Rice takes us to Luke 15:11–32 and the parable of the prodigal son—a powerful picture of both rebellion and redemption.Through the story of the younger and older sons, we see two different ways hearts can drift from the Father—one through reckless living, the other through self-righteousness. Yet at the center of it all stands a compassionate Father who pursues, forgives, and restores with overwhelming grace. This message reminds us that no matter how far we've wandered or how long we've stood at a distance, the invitation is the same: to come home. And when we do, we find not rejection, but celebration—because what was lost is found.Support the showFind us at! Calvary.us
Most reward systems were built for a world where speed, volume, and visible output were reliable signals of performance. But AI now produces all three at scale. That leaves organizations facing an uncomfortable question: if AI can generate more output than ever, what exactly are you rewarding? In this episode, David Rice sits down with Anju Choudhary, Chief People Officer at Xoxoday, to explore why recognition systems need a redesign for the AI era. They discuss the growing gap between productivity and impact, the importance of recognizing human-centered behaviors like judgment and collaboration, and why the most important question leaders can ask isn't "What do we want people to do?" but "What do we want people to feel?"Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Anju on LinkedInVisit XoxodaySupport the show
AI promises efficiency, but the real question is what teams do with the time they get back. In this conversation from Transform in Las Vegas, Oyster's Erin Goodey joins David Rice to unpack how global HR teams are balancing automation with human connection—especially when managing distributed workforces across countries, compliance requirements, and sensitive employee situations.Erin shares how Oyster is using AI to eliminate repetitive administrative work, freeing HR teams to focus on the moments that actually require empathy, judgment, and strategic thinking. From global expansion challenges to the evolving role of HR business partners, this episode explores what “human-centric” HR really looks like in an AI-enabled workplace.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Erin on LinkedInVisit Oyster HRSupport the show
Most leaders think they're navigating another wave of disruption. Sara Loncka argues we're in something far more unsettling: discontinuity. The old assumptions don't just need tweaking—they've stopped working altogether. Past experience, the thing leaders have spent entire careers building confidence around, is suddenly less reliable as a guide for the future. And that's creating a strange kind of friction: teams keep pushing harder with familiar playbooks while the terrain underneath them quietly changes shape. In this conversation, David Rice and Sara unpack why experienced leaders are often the most vulnerable in moments like this, how organizations get trapped by expertise, and why the future of strategy looks less like certainty and more like continuous inquiry. They also explore collective intelligence, learning agility, and why redesigning work now requires leaders to think more like designers than operators.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Sara on LinkedInVisit Experience Institute and NYU SternSupport the show
AI is speeding up people decisions at exactly the moment those decisions require more care, more context, and frankly, more humility. In this episode, Matt Poepsel from The Predictive Index joins David Rice at Transform to unpack the growing gap between what AI can do and what organizations actually understand about the people data they're feeding into it. Because while everyone is obsessed with automation, agents, and productivity gains, most managers still don't know how to ask the most important question: “Do we actually have the right context for this decision?”The conversation digs into the uncomfortable reality underneath modern workplace AI adoption. Companies are compressing timelines because AI can generate outputs faster, but they're still operating from old assumptions about productivity, management, and collaboration. The result? Burnout, shallow decision-making, and what Matt calls “work slop” — endless AI-generated summaries, presentations, and outputs that create distance between people while pretending to improve teamwork. The deeper challenge isn't technological. It's behavioral. And most organizations still aren't equipped to deal with that.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Matt on LinkedInVisit The Predictive IndexSupport the show
Only 10% of senior leaders admit to using AI. Which raises an awkward question: if leadership isn't really using the tools, who exactly is teaching everyone else how to work with them? Increasingly, the answer is peers. In this conversation from Transform, David Rice sits down with returning guest Kamaria Scott to unpack why AI adoption is becoming less of a top-down transformation initiative and more of a global peer-learning experiment happening in real time. They explore the growing tension between organizational pressure to adopt AI and the complete lack of capacity many employees have to actually experiment with it. Along the way, they dig into manager enablement, skill atrophy, learning agility, performance management, and the uncomfortable possibility that companies are automating away the very expertise employees need to judge whether AI output is any good in the first place. The result is a candid discussion about why managers may become the bottleneck in AI adoption—and why organizations that failed to build real learning cultures before this moment are now paying for it.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Kamaria on LinkedInSupport the show
AI is supposed to free people up for “higher-value work.” Fine. But what, exactly, is that work? In this episode, David Rice talks with cyberpsychology researcher and psychotherapist Dr. Rachel Wood about the part of AI adoption most organizations keep skimming past: the human cost of automating too much, too quickly, without a real philosophy for what should remain deeply, stubbornly human.Their conversation cuts through the usual AI optimism and gets to the more uncomfortable truth. Some friction should absolutely go away. Nobody needs to spend an hour copying and pasting spreadsheet data. But some friction is the job: disagreement, discernment, hard conversations, learning by getting things wrong, and figuring out who you are when your expertise is suddenly easier to imitate. This episode is really about that distinction, and why leaders need to stop treating AI as a software rollout and start treating it as a human development challenge.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Rachel:LinkedInAI Mental Health CollectiveRachel's websiteSupport the show

If your organization looks successful on paper but feels strangely tense in practice, there's a good chance fear—not excellence—is quietly running the show. In this episode, David Rice talks with Brave Together author Chris Deaver about how fear disguises itself in high-performing workplaces: polished presentations, perfect metrics, and meetings where nobody laughs—and nobody challenges anything either.Their conversation explores what happens when organizations reward superhero behavior, visibility over collaboration, and certainty over curiosity. The result is brittle excellence and teams that quietly fracture under pressure. The alternative, Deaver argues, is building cultures of co-creation—where leaders shift from being the smartest person in the room to becoming integrators, connectors, and context builders. In a world reshaped by AI and constant disruption, the real advantage isn't information anymore—it's shared wisdom, deep empathy, and the courage to build together.Related Links:Join the People Managing People CommunitySubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Chris:LinkedInLead with a Question podcastCheck out Chris' book: Brave TogetherSupport the show
This week, David Rice and Pam Maragliano are joined by the multi-talented Dr. Karla Soto, a third-generation dentist with nearly 20 years of clinical experience and educational leadership. Recorded on a Friday when everyone is finally at home, the conversation takes a laid-back but inspiring look at dentistry careers, lifelong learning, and what it takes to stay passionate and innovative in the dental field. Key Topics Covered 1. Dr. Karla Soto's journey & philosophy Transition from residency to joining her mother's startup practice in Boca Raton, Florida as a young mom Passion for comprehensive, patient-focused dentistry, and why she became “addicted” to continuing education Emphasis on saying “yes” to new opportunities and immersing fully into each experience 2. The power of continuing education (CE) Discussion on how the right CE can ignite passion, confidence, and new skills, especially when surrounded by like-minded peers Both Dr. Karla Soto and Dr. Pam Maragliano reflect on the formative impact of early mentors and immersive CE experiences. The challenge is that only about 4% of dentists actually implement advanced CE learnings in daily practice. 3. Making education practical (and bringing your team) Pam and Dr. Soto and stress the importance of practical, real-world workshops, and learning side-by-side with team members. Examples of how having your “ride or die” implementer (office manager or assistant) makes integration more successful. 4. Favorite tools & techniques Full digital workflow for consults, patient engagement, and clinical procedures Love for certain products: Ultradent Optrasculpt, OptiGate, Variolink cements, Ivoclar products, and Emax for ceramics Practical tips from mission trips—why certain tools become absolute MVPs when resources are limited, and how these experiences inform what's essential in regular practice 5. Fostering team investment & growth •Dr. Karla Soto's educational platform, Key Elements, focuses on bringing whole teams together, sharing the journey, and creating retention through shared development wins. Notable Quotes “When your circle is at that level, it's almost contagious—you want to keep elevating together.” —Dr. Karla Soto “You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable if you want to grow in this profession.” —Dr. Karla Soto “I love CE that inspires me to want to change how I practice.” —Pam Maragliano Connect with Dr. Karla Soto Instagram: @Dr.KarlaSoto Educational Platform: keyelements.co Dr. Karla Soto is based in South Florida and always happy to connect with curious colleagues!

We're in an era where everyone's talking about AI, but few are actually getting value from it. In this episode, futurist and author Ravin Jesuthasan joins host David Rice to unpack why the ROI of AI is still so elusive — and why most organizations are looking at it backwards.Ravin argues that the problem isn't technological; it's human. Companies are rushing to deploy tools before they rethink the work itself. He explains how leaders can shift from a tech-first to a work-first mindset, what it really means to be AI fluent, and why the job-based identity that defined the past 150 years of work is quietly crumbling. If you're an HR leader, executive, or strategist trying to navigate AI adoption without losing the human center of work, this conversation will help you see what transformation actually looks like — and where to start.Related Links:Join the People Managing People community forumSubscribe to the newsletter to get our latest articles and podcastsConnect with Ravin on LinkedInCheck out Mercer and Ravin's websiteSupport the show

Most people don't burn out because they're working too hard—they burn out because they're performing at a pace they were never built to sustain, chasing goals that don't align with who they are. What if the solution to management burnout isn't better time management, but a complete rethink of how we structure leadership roles? In this follow-up episode, Kamaria Scott and David Rice, host of the People Managing People podcast, continue their lively, two-way conversation about the impossible position we've put modern managers in. Picking up where Part 1 left off, Kamaria and David trade stories, compare experiences, and challenge each other's thinking on how organizations unintentionally overload managers. They dig into how the decline of long-term job security and traditional benefits has shifted expectations—often leaving managers to “duct tape” systemic problems they didn't create. Together, they explore: How engagement is shaped by the conscious choices employees make about where to direct their energy The hidden costs of emotional labor for managers, and what can be done to reduce it The gap between generational expectations and current organizational realities Strategies for building team trust when institutional trust is low The conversation flows from structural issues to personal stories, touching on why 82% of young professionals say they don't want management roles, and why—even as AI evolves—human managers remain essential for context, judgment, and belief in their people. Whether you're navigating management challenges yourself or rethinking how your organization supports its leaders, this episode offers practical takeaways and a reminder that no manager should have to hero their way through systemic problems alone. Chase shares how Doist uses radical candor, documented values, and consistent reinforcement to build a culture where purpose isn't wallpaper. It's a mirror. We're continuing our conversation with Rev. Dr. David Rice about confronting Christian nationalism—a topic we're diving into because of the ways that it can deeply affect our faith, our communities, and how we engage with one another in this shifting cultural and political landscape. In our last episode, David shared his personal story—how his upbringing, ministry experiences, and cultural shifts shaped his understanding of faith and politics. We explored the unique challenges pastors face in addressing these issues from the pulpit and the tension of being accused of getting "too political" when speaking out about national concerns. If you haven't had a chance to listen yet, we encourage you to go back and catch up on that conversation first. In this episode, we'll dig deeper into: What Christian nationalism is and why it's a critical issue for people of faith, Our collective longing for control—something humanity has wrestled with since the very beginning—and how this longing fuels Christian nationalism, And how we can thoughtfully engage with our friends, neighbors, and fellow believers in conversations about these challenging issues. We hope our conversation with David sparks some new thoughts or insights into how power is being used, where our faith fits into these conversations, and how we can move forward in meaningful, compassionate ways. Christian nationalism is a growing issue in the U.S., raising important questions about the relationship between faith and politics. How does our faith shape the way we engage with political issues? And are our political allegiances influencing our faith in ways we may not realize? While we're certainly not a news or political network, this is a timely and necessary conversation. Power—both religious and political—can be used to bring about justice and healing, but it can also be wielded in ways that cause harm. In the first episode of a two-part conversation, we're joined by Rev. Dr. David Rice, an alumnus of The Seattle School and Digital Strategist for BJC, where he leads online engagement and the Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign. David begins by sharing his personal story—how his upbringing, ministry experiences, and cultural influences shaped his understanding of faith and politics. He also speaks to the challenges pastors and faith leaders face when addressing national issues from the pulpit, often being accused of being “too political.” We invite you to come back next week for part two of this conversation as David, Dan, and Rachael dive deeper—defining Christian nationalism, exploring our collective longing for control, and considering how we can engage with our communities in meaningful ways.
