Pastor, author, and theologian David Ritchie was my guest to discuss his book Why Do the Nations Rage?: The Demonic Origin of Nationalism. We discussed […]
Tomorrow is the 2nd anniversary of the riot or insurrection at the United States Capitol. Additionally the January 6th Congressional Committee just finished its work and referred former President Donald Trump to the Department of Justice on four criminal charges relating to that day. Nationalism and Christian nationalism are on our minds again, as they have been nearly nonstop for the past two years. On today's episode of All Things, Pastor and Author David Ritchie helps us look at Christian nationalism through a Biblical lens. Ritchie says nationalism is a disordered love. You can have an ordered love of nation—that's called patriotism. But nationalism is when one's love of country becomes one's hope and vision for their future or safety or fundamental security.Ritchie shows us that nationalism itself is a religious shell that encases a political vision. Nationalist movements advance with religious fervor, even summoning people to worship and the adoration of a messiah figure. Christian nationalist movements co-opt and utilize Christian language and categories to advance their cause. Christian nationalists elevate individuals to the category of messiah—someone who will deliver us. In the US in particular we have looked to George Washington, or Barack Obama, and more recently Donald Trump as salvation figures for our nation. When someone says, “Donald Trump is God's man,” we as Christians should pause at the very least and reflect on what it means to assign salvific qualities to a politician. As Ritchie shows us in this episode, the stakes are high. To whom are we devoted? For what future vision are we living? Where is our hope? Does our faith influence our politics or are our politics shaping our faith? What if we understood nationalism as a religion instead of an ideology? What if nationalism is more spiritual than it is political? Several Christian thinkers have rightly recognized nationalism as a form of idolatry. In this TOT lecture, David A. Ritchie , author of the book Why Do the Nations Rage?, will argue that nationalism is inherently demonic as well. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of scholarship on nationalism and the biblical theology behind Paul's doctrine of “powers,” Ritchie's lecture will uncover how the impulse behind nationalism is as ancient as the tower of Babel and as demonic as the worship of Baal. Moreover, when compared to Christianity, Ritchie will show that nationalism is best understood as a rival religion that bears its own distinctive (and demonically inspired) false gospel, which seeks to both imitate and distort the Christian gospel.David A. Ritchie serves as the Lead Pastor of Redeemer Christian Church and an Instructor of Religion at West Texas A&M University. In his scholarly research, Ritchie interrogated how nationalist movements operate less like a political ideology and more like a spiritually-charged religion. This research culminated in the writing of his book Why Do the Nations Rage? The Demonic Origin of Nationalism, published in 2022 by Wipf & Stock Publishers. This fall he will be presenting a paper at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting entitled “Sketching a Christology of Nationalism: How Nationalism Utilizes Messianic Characterizations to Elicit Spiritual Devotion and Religious Affection.” Ritchie is a highly engaged leader in the West Texas community, serving on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations and ministries, including the Refugee Language Project and the Redeemer Network. David is married to Kate, and together they live in Amarillo, Texas, with their three sons, Solomon, Samuel, and Simon Peter.

Most Voice of Insurance episodes tend to be with industry CEOs. This way you can get to know the real people behind the public persona and learn about how the industry really works by finding out what makes its leaders tick. But of course it doesn't give you a huge amount of class-specific detail. Industry titans at public companies know a ton of detail about high finance and deal economics, but if I went too deep into detail on any given class of insurance or reinsurance, they would rightly refer me to an inhouse expert for a full briefing. And that's why I recorded this episode. In this hard and Covid-affected market, the hardest segment seems to be the International Directors' and Officers' liability market or (D&O) as we all know it. I wanted to get into hard detail about what is going on in this market. To do this I began to set up interviews with D&O practitioners. My aim was to put together the views of multiple experts into an in-depth report. But the first of these meetings turned out to be so strong that I have decided to put it out as an episode in its own right. David Ritchie is Managing Director of Management Liability at Gallagher UK and is a very senior broker with his finger directly on the pulse of the sector. In great detail David describes a market in a state of crisis and dislocation where cover is severely rationed and definitely not guaranteed at any price. This is a world where the prices and terms that are being dictated by the few markets that remain open are almost secondary in importance. Customers have to take it or leave it and may be forced to hit the nuclear button of invoking sunset clauses on expiring cover and renewing on extremely restrictive retroactive date inception terms just to get by. In short this is the hardest market of all time by a very, very long margin. With only trickles of new capacity on the way and more market withdrawals possible I don't envy David's day job one bit, but I do commend this episode to anyone who wants to know where and how many of the underwriting fortunes and reputations of 2021 and beyond are going to be forged. A conversation with David Ritchie, pastor of Redeemer Christian Church. David comes from a family with deep West Texas roots, and his church community is also historic. Instead of planting a new church from scratch, he "replanted" Redeemer within a struggling, multi-generational church that dated back to the 1920s. With host Jason Boyett, he shares the Redeemer origin story and explains why it's so crucial for church members to find ways to serve the city. This episode is sponsored by Panhandle Plains Historical Museum.

West Texas pastor, David Ritchie, joins Samantha and Remoy to explore the complex intersection of Christianity and masculinity. David tells the story of how he was born into Christianity, how he sought out other philosophies and religions, and finally returned to the Faith with a greater hope for what the the Faith could be. David reflects on how Christianity, in its purest form, is incredibly progressive when it comes to gender roles. Finally, David speaks to how Christianity has been co-opted for the greater evil more than for the greater good, and the three of them explore how all of us are impacted.

Along with Kathryn’s grandmother Gloria and her daughters Stella and Mae…you’ll sometimes find all four generations busy around the shop…what a special thing to have.
