A bit of freezing rain covered with some light snow. VERY dangerous driving conditions this morning. We started the morning with the Thursday Song from our buddy, Adam Palm. In the news this morning, a Viroqua man has been arrested on federal charges of smuggling firearms to Saudi Arabia, the protests at the State Capitol yesterday, a Wisconsin couple is suing Walgreens after their son died, and President Trump signed an executive order yesterday that bars transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. The Bucks got a nice win over Charlotte last night after trading Khris Middleton, the Badgers take on Iowa on Saturday, the trades in the NBA are dominating the news cycle, Dick Vitale is going to return to the broadcast table this weekend for the Duke/Clemson game, and a figure skating event will benefit the victims of the recent plane crash in DC. We ran our interview with Grant Bilse of the Wisco Sports Show as he broadcasts live from the Super Bowl, and we also got on the phone with Office Cora to talk about what's happening in the 715 this weekend. Let you know what's on TV tonight and talked about a really bad answer on "Family Feud". Plus, it's our second edition of "Hypothetical Thursday"…where we ask each other hypothetical questions. Big game coming up on Sunday and we discussed a new list of our favorite Super Bowl food items. Incredibly heroic kid in Philly saved his sister's life during the medical plane crash that happened last week, and a pilot in Arkansas is being praised for stopping a teenager who came into the airport with a gun & demanding a plane. In a classic case of F' Around & Find Out, one of the Yankees fans that grabbed Mookie Betts during the World Series is now bitching & moaning about the repercussion from his actions. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a #FloridaMan who tried to set a forest on fire, a judge who had to resign after some comments he made about being a juror, a woman who is suing an MLB team after she allegedly slipped on some dog pee at a game, and what the hell is going on with Build-A-Bear? This is an exciting time of year as Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) partners with the WIAA (Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association) and WSN (Wisconsin Sports Network). Dairy farmer, executive board member and WI representative on the National Dairy Board, Gail Klinkner, takes a moment to explain why this partnership is key from a nutritional standpoint, and a "next generation customer" position. Klinkner begins by explaining the dairy farm that her family operates in Western Wisconsin in the community of Viroqua. As a mom, Klinkner has 5 active kids - two of which are involved in high school sports themselves! Klinkner explains that DFW has enjoyed a long standing partnership with WIAA and WSN. Again in 2025, there will be a major messaging emphasis during State Tournaments! Wisconsin Dairy farmers not only support these teams, individuals, and communities, but they also share Wisconsin Dairy Farming messages to audiences that may be removed from agriculture. Sustainability, dairy product nutrition, and economic impact are a focus of the outreach. Appropriately enough, “Chocolate Milk is the official beverage of the WIAA”. Athletes at these state tournaments are provided chocolate milk. Promotion and consumption of chocolate milk and its recovery benefits for athletes and fans are showcased on television, social and in stadiums during these tournaments. Klinkner explains the partnership with WisSports.net that extends beyond the courts to the annual "Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month". This showcase allows dedicated Wisconsin dairy to highlight youth who grow and raise food for their communities. WisSports.net is the go-to location for high school sports schedules, individual athlete and team statistics, as well as state rankings. More than 35 million pages are viewed annually at wissports.net, providing a great platform for athletes, coaches, and fans to see positive dairy messaging and support for our local farmers and athletes across the state. Wisconsin dairy will be recognizing two athletes every month during the campaign. To find out how you can submit an athlete honoree, go to wissports.net, wisconsindairy.org or WSN social media platforms.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/639 Presented By: TroutRoutes Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/troutroutes Welcome to another exciting episode where we dive deep into the Troutroutes app innovations and partnerships. Today, we are thrilled to have Erik Johnsen with us, a passionate fly fisherman who has transformed his love for the sport into a groundbreaking role at Troutroutes. As we explore the app's acquisition by OnX and its impressive features—from color-coded trout stream maps to a river miles calculator tool—it's clear that Erik and his team are revolutionizing how anglers navigate and enjoy their fishing experiences. Join us as we delve into Erik's insights, including his favorite fishing spots in Wisconsin and the hidden gems of the Driftless Area. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a curious beginner, this episode promises to inspire and inform, bringing the world of fly fishing to your fingertips. Episode Chapters with Erik Johnsen on Troutroutes App Feature Updates and Partnerships 1:51 - Erik shares his background on fly fishing, explaining that he is from the Upper Midwest and became interested in fly fishing while visiting the Driftless region with his wife. He learned to fly fish on his own about 15 years ago, driven by a desire to connect with his father-in-law, who was an avid fly fisherman. After many attempts, Erik finally succeeded in getting his father-in-law to join him, rekindling his enthusiasm for the sport. 4:54 - He shares his journey to working in Troutroutes. His entry into the fly fishing industry began unexpectedly during a fishing trip with a friend, who suggested he apply for a position at TroutRoutes. After a successful interview with founder Zach Pope, Erik joined the initial team to support the app's development. 8:19 - We delve into the recent acquisition of Troutroutes by OnX, a well-known mapping application used by anglers. Erik explains that this acquisition, which took place in March after years of networking and relationship building, has been a significant milestone for Troutroutes. 10:55 - He discusses the key features of the app. Troutroutes specializes in mapping trout streams across the lower 48 states, offering stream classifications that are color-coded to indicate the quality of trout habitat and ease of access. This feature is particularly useful for beginners in trout fishing or fly angling, helping them identify healthy trout populations and accessible fishing spots. Additionally, the app provides detailed maps that show public and private land boundaries and legal access points, ensuring anglers know where they can fish without trespassing. A standout feature Erik highlights is the river miles calculator tool, which allows users to measure the distance between any two points on a trout stream. This tool is especially beneficial for planning fishing trips, whether for floating, walking, or wading. It provides precise stream miles rather than straight-line distances, making it easier to gauge the actual distance and plan accordingly. 13:53 - Erik mentions that one of the primary challenges is helping users determine what information they need when looking at a map of trout streams. To mitigate this, they outline icons and explain filter and layer settings to make data interpretation easier. Another significant challenge is presenting extensive data in a way that is easy to read, filter, and sort. Erik emphasizes the importance of organizing data meaningfully for different user needs, such as regulations or public access. 16:56 - He says that while maps are accessible online, users can download specific sections for offline use, ensuring the GPS signal remains functional even without cell coverage. This feature enhances navigation and instills confidence, especially in unfamiliar areas. Erik elaborates on the process of downloading maps, which can be done directly on a smartphone. 22:29 - Erik highlights the integration of USGS stream gauges within the app, a feature that provides real-time river conditions, which is crucial for assessing fishing prospects. This feature allows users to gauge stream levels, flows, and heights before even stepping onto the water, offering a significant advantage and a delightful surprise for many users. 25:34 - Our conversation also touches on the importance of fly shops within the app, which Erik notes was a key element from the beginning. These shops are not just places to buy gear but community hubs for conservation activities and educational events. The app manually maps these shops, connecting users with local expertise and resources. 29:51 - Erik reflects on the company's success, particularly emphasizing the importance of community and partnerships. He explains that a pivotal moment occurred about a year and a half ago when they attended their first national fly fishing expos. Initially uncertain of the outcome, they were pleasantly surprised by the positive reception and the eagerness from industry members to collaborate. 32:17 - We dig into the complexities of water use laws and access regulations in different states. Erik explains that access to waterways can vary significantly depending on the state, season, and even water temperature. To navigate these varying regulations, their team compiles as much data as possible into their app, making it easier for users to find relevant information by simply tapping on a stream and accessing the "access laws" tab. This feature links users to up-to-date resources when regulations are subject to change. 36:24 - We discuss their partnership with RareWaters, emphasizing the value and benefits of the collaboration. Erik elaborates on how RareWaters aligns with their mission of increasing access to fishing spots. The partnership allows anglers to explore new fishing opportunities that were once restricted by private ownership. He appreciates the dedication of RareWaters' team to conservation and public access advocacy, highlighting their collaboration with Colorado Trout Unlimited and efforts to support local businesses. 41:05 - Erik commends the Driftless Angler, highlighting their excellent fishing reports. He also expresses his excitement about exploring the less accessible streams in the Driftless Area, which is rich in fishing opportunities yet often overlooked compared to other regions. 44:35 - We ask Erik about potential destinations in Wisconsin, particularly for a fly fishing trip. Erik suggests stopping by Viroqua, a central hub for fly fishing. He also highlights the charm of hidden dive bars in the backwoods, which often don't have signs but offer unique and inviting atmospheres. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/639

When Brian McCulloh found himself in Viroqua, Wis., in 1984 to manage and grow the Angus herd at Woodhill Farms, he knew he'd be learning as he went. In the decades that followed, Brian used that as a personal motto of sorts, always drawing on his curiosity and need for answers to make improvements. Early on he selected the type of cattle he wanted to create and then stayed focused on that for his entire career, building a legacy Angus brand with his program as a result. Brian says the key has been avoiding distractions, believing in the data and then following the plan. This episode covers everything from his early years to whether it's easier or harder today and even the story of why he decided it was time for a new chapter. HOSTS: Mark McCully and Miranda Reiman GUESTS: Brian McCulloh was an Iowa farm boy who enjoyed showing and judging cattle in 4-H. They've been there ever since.Woodhill Farms, operated in partnership with Dan and Anne Borgen, received the Certified Angus Beef ® Commitment to Excellence award in 2000, and McCulloh received the Angus Heritage Award in 2020. What a week. We talked to Chris Daughtry about his upcoming show at the La Crosse Center with Breaking Benjamin, and we talked to Wade from Rock Fest on Thursday when the lineup was released! On top of that, we talked about some easy ways to burn calories, a new device that electrocutes the allergies out of your nose(supposedly), and a dog that helped save it's owner after he fell through some ice on a lake. This week's Monday Morning Throwback was from 2014 when we were trying to help Skradie make a few extra bucks. We reacted to Elle King's drunken performance for Dolly Parton's birthday celebration at the Grand Old Opry, and on Monday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about Taylor Swift's stalker getting arrested again, a couple in Kansas that hid a dead body to collect retirement funds, a dude in Philly who killed his neighbor because of loud snoring, and the guy who stole Dorothy's ruby slippers back in 2005 finally revealed why he did it. On Tuesday, we found out that Sammy Hagar is actually Sammy Belcher??? Brian raved about his Zevo fruit fly devices, and during Tuesday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a school in NC that removed the mirrors from the restrooms to help stop kids from filming TikTok videos, a guy who got shot in the head but mistook it for a rock for FOUR days, and a #FloridaMan who got pulled over & gave his license to a cop…but it was covered in meth. Shaw aced this week's movie quote during "You're killin' me, Shaws", giving Brad from Viroqua a $70 win! We also had a couple of stories about babies being born in the car on the way to the hospital. Also, after Tyler Bass missed the game-tying field goal during last weekend's Bills/Chiefs game, people starting donating to his favorite cat shelter in his honor. And during Wednesday's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about the foul-mouthed parrots at a British wildlife park, a kid in Utah who duct-tapes dead fish to ATMs, PETA's desire to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a giant gold coin, and a guy on a plane who wouldn't stop farting. In this Episode we WadeOutThere with Jason Randall from Viroqua, Wisconsin. Jason grew up learning to fish from his father. After serving in the army and attending college as a biology major, he worked briefly in the hatchery and fishery business, which helped influence the scientific approach he takes to fly fishing and trout. Jason credits the generosity of his many fly fishing mentors with helping him learn and progress over the years, and is the reason he values the educational aspect of the sport so much today. Jason has been a teacher in fly fishing for decades, has written several fly fishing books, and was the trout feature writer for American Angler Magazine. We discuss Jason's scientific approach to fly fishing, the specific adjustments he makes based on water temperature, sky cover, sun angles, and water clarity. As well as presentation techniques for accomplishing what Jason describes as “the three goals of nymphing.”You can follow along with Jason on his fly fishing journey or reach out to him on Instagram at:@jasonrandallfllyfishingIf you'd like more in depth information on the topics we discussed try these books from Jason:Nymph Masters. Having worked with popular bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Killdozer and many more, Butch explains how “happy accidents” during recording sessions have led to some iconic moments in music history. Starting at 15 years old playing in roadside taverns in Viroqua to creating his first record label in Madison, Butch explains how “I can travel around the world but you can't take me out of Wisconsin”. Butch pulls out his guitar mid-interview and plays the first song he ever wrote called “You've Got it Bad” which prompts Charlie to share lyrics from the first song he wrote about his first heartbreak.
