Founder of Mr Black Spirits, Tom Baker, joins the program today. Until the brand was acquired by Diageo in 2022, Tom led the business as CEO, alongside Master Distiller, Philip Moore. The bittersweet Australian liqueur's iconic bottle was created by Tom - a designer by trade - and is now known the world over, with everything still produced at their distillery/roastery just North of Sydney.
15 years of career experience. Currently a back step for the City Of Schertz Fire/Rescue in Texas. Philip assists with the Daggum Conference, Legacy Conference and with No Quit RIT. Former instructor for Ridge Fire Academy In Winter Haven Florida. Philip has had his shares of up and downs and is not afraid to talk about it. But with the help of being around true friends and brothers he is now back into the profession he loves and truly is out here trying to make a positive difference for himself and those around him. Leaving the job better than he found it is all we could strive for. IG: felipemas1979

2022 is certainly turning out to be a landmark year for Australian distilling, in many respects. In June, Starward Whisky was named the Most Awarded Distillery of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the first time an Australian distiller has taken out this title. Then came the news that the news that three out of four nominees for the International Wine & Spirit Competition - IWSC International Gin Producer of the Year are Australian: Kalkimoon and Granddad Jack's, from Queensland, and from Victoria, Naught Gin.And you heard just recently on the podcast from Philip Moore, the first Australian inducted into the Gin Magazine Hall Of Fame.It all coincides with the 30th anniversary of Lark Distillery, the whisky company founded by Bill Lark in 1992, which effectively started the modern era of Australian distilling.I sat down with Bill Lark for a chat reflecting on the milestone in this special episode of Drinks Adventures, produced in partnership with Lark.I learned how John Grant, fifth generation owner of Scotland's famous Glenfarclas distillery, helped Bill set up his distillery in the very early days. And I asked Bill his thoughts on Lark as it is today, a very different enterprise to what he had originally envisioned.First up though, I'm excited to share some highlights from Lark Distillery's 30th anniversary gala event held on May 26, 2022 at Lark's new site in Pontville, Tasmania. It was MCed by Bill's son Jack and attended by 200 guests from across Australia. The celebrations started by honouring the Mumurimina (Mu mee ree mee nah) Country that the Pontville site resides on, with a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony. You can get your hands on a variety of Lark's exciting limited release whiskies now at larkdistillery.com.Whiskies like Lark Origins Single Malt Whisky, a special release crafted with water from Lake Sorell, where Bill Lark had that fateful discussion with his father-in-law that led to his founding Lark Distillery. This special release celebrating 30 years of Tasmanian whisky is available now at larkdistillery.com.
Our guest this episode is Philip Moore, who in February 2022 became the first Australian inducted into the Gin Magazine's Hall of Fame. Now you might well ask, who is Philip Moore? He's certainly not one of our highest profile gin distillers. But he was actually the first Australian gin distiller to win a gold at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, and his distilling career stretches back to the very early days of contemporary Australian gin.Prior to that, Philip studied and trained as a horticulturist and medical herbalist. In the mid 1980s he started a specialist culinary herb nursery, Renaissance Herbs, which grew from a single greenhouse into the largest wholesale herb nursery in Australia, cultivating close to a million plants a year.Meanwhile, Philip had developed a passion for wine and subsequently, distilled spirits including gin.He exited the herbs business in 2005 and purchased a nursery site on the NSW Central Coast, where he subsequently founded Distillery Botanica and the Moore's Dry Gin brand. And together with Tom Baker, he co-founded the hugely successful Mr Black Coffee Liqueur, which we explored with Tom back in Season 8.This is a wide-ranging interview with Philip about his career and the evolution of Australian gin.He certainly doesn't hold back with his opinions on the use of Australian natives by distillers. He shares some tips on how to taste spirits more effectively, and you'll also hear about Philip's new venture, Terrigal Rum Company. That's all coming up in this interview with Distillery Botanica founder Philip Moore.Tags: gin, distilling, distillery, distiller, liquor, craft spirits, distilled spirits, cocktail, cocktails, drink, drinks, wine, winemaking, winemaker, viticulture, beer, craft beer, brewing, agave, tequila, mezcal, bartender, bartenders, sommelier, sommeliers, cicerone, whisky, whiskey, cognac, bourbon, vodka, vineyard, mixology, bars, pubs, restaurants, hospitality

This and every episode of the Rock Town Podcast is made possible thanks to our supporters on Patreon: Dustin, Edward, Jose, Nate, Steve, Zach, Basti, Levi, Brad, Ivan, Randy, Jeff, Brad, Lawrence, Mark, Clay, Konjure, Guy, Ty, Trace, Kofi, Jeff, and Patrick. What some podcasters could do in a year, we did in three and a half. We — Erick Garcia, Kennan Scott, Philip Moore, and I — take the show back to its roots in Kennan's garage. We count down the show's most popular episodes to date, as well as discuss a potential Winterclash emcee collaboration, gophering, diaspora, getting married, making babies, and vacuum cleaners. And we have a new theme song featuring music from our good friends Skookum. This and every episode of the Rock Town Podcast is made possible thanks to our supporters on Patreon: Trudy, Dustin, Edward, Jose, Nate, Steve, Alexander, Zach, Basti, Jon, Levi, Sean, Brad, Ivan, Randy, Jeff, Brad, Tri, Lawrence, Obe, Mark, Clay, Todd, Konjure, Ian, Guy, Ty, Trace, Kofi, Jeff, and Patrick. Hashtag-cohost was a resounding success, so now Philip Moore is officially in the Rock Town family. In this episode, I share some of my best mistakes as a blade podcaster, who really deserves the 'Blade Author of the Year' award. In this and future episodes, we'll be talking about rollerblading, race, representation, and, of course, comic book movies. Philip Moore and Matty Schrock are two Southern shredders mulling around the Bay Area. We talk about Phil's recent contest winnings, BARS, and a lot about the different types of skating. I met today's guests at a conference in January and practically tackled them during the next break to get them on the podcast to talk about a topic that is fascinating, necessary, and not something we've discussed in depth on the show before - disrupting the education system. Gordy Bal and Philip Moore (who was mentored by Buckminster Fuller!!!), are collaborating to create Xploration Centre, a "wild school" that promotes loved based education. Now before you go rolling your eyes, listen to the show. They share how the current education is setting up children to be ill equipped to exist and thrive in a world where technology is developing at a more rapid pace than any other time in history. Phil schools us on "neoteny" and what that has to do with quality education and development for humans, to be unique, to help them learn and live in questions rather than trying to adhere to curriculums, exactness, and systems that are very exclusive to learning and personality styles. We talk about synergy, what it means to be a global citizen, and more. I don't know that I've ever been more excited about an interview. Enjoy! About Gordy Bal and Phillip Moore: Gordy Bal - Alchemist and Visionary The Xploration Centre is what Gordy has been dreaming of for his own three sons. An education model that connects our children back to nature and prepares them for Xponential times. An education model that embraces entrepreneurial learning and sustainability in a natural environment. A space where young minds can discover their purpose and passion through Xploration and share their superpowers with the world to make it a better place. Phillip Moore - Synergistic Guide and Educational Innovator Mentored by Buckminster Fuller, Phillip began teaching at Upland Hills Farm School in 1971. He was asked to become the director of the school in February of 1972 and served until June of 2013. During this 40-year period, Phil developed teams on the staff and board level to grow a learning community. In this episode, Gordy and Phil share: 1. What it means to be a global citizen 2. What is "eros" and what does it have to do with modern education? 3. Culturing our youth through synergy and consciousness 4. Getting away from trying to "control" children through behavior modification and recognizing all we can stand to learn from them as adults
The fact they are both from Australia has nothing to do with how Alix Nardella, our guest today, feels for Mr. Black. Her first love may have been whisky but now she only has eyes for this smooth and sexy coffee liqueur. Download the audio Born in 2012, Mr. Black is the love child of Tom Baker and Philip Moore. After tinkering for nine months, they came upon the perfect combination of coffee beans to produce their sublime elixir, immediately winning a gold medal from London International Wine and Spirits that year. Alix has been winning awards as well, coming second in The Glenfiddich Malt Mastermind competition before joining Mr. Black. After traveling the world, lucky for us, she settled in London and is set on teaching us all that there is more to a coffee drink than the White Russian and the Espresso Martini. (no matter how good they both are!) She even converted me to the wonders of the Negroni, which I am not a big fan of, after making me one of her creations, simply called the Coffee Negroni, which she made for me at Every Cloud in Hackney. Check her out here on our YouTube channel: Mixology in a Minute Next week, we travel back in time to the Roaring Twenties, when London’s Theatre District was the place to be. Jason Vickers and Pablo Moreno Garcia have the Champagne on ice for us at the Waldorf Astoria’s Miss Homage Bar. Did you miss Flavian Joubert's incredible story? Check it out on Itunes! Philip Moore and Michael Braud are two southern gentlemen who have been skating and filming together over the last few weeks here in the Bay Area.
