Interview by Kris PetersBad Wolves hit the jackpot with their 2021 album Dear Monsters, satisfying existing fans of the band with their output, while also drawing a new breed of followers to their music. It was a success in every way, which made their follow-up album Die About It - out now - all the more significant.Die About It came with all of the usual fanfare, declaring it "pushes the boundaries of their soundscape in pursuit of new sonic dimensions" and more, but, as they say, the proof is always in the pudding. So is Die About It as good as everyone says?HEAVY thinks so, but to gauge the album from the band's viewpoint we sat down with drummer John Boecklin to discuss more."Feeling good. Very fresh," he enthused. "It feels like a great start to a cycle. We hit the road with Bush in America. I feel the record has a lot of… not avant guard things… but things we certainly haven't tried before which makes us feel not stuck in a rut doing the same old. Rock radio, in general, is the kind of band we are, but we get very, very, very heavy in songs on this one. You can feel it, every album has a creative rut of getting kind of stuck in certain formulas, so we tried to do the best we can to stay out of that and do songs that feel more expressive and make you feel more emotions than some of the past songs."We ask John to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."I think where we started it was we weren't going for anything," he measured. "We dropped any ideas of 'well, this worked in the past, let's do that'. Sometimes we did that stuff, like 'this did really good, let's do some of that'. I think some of the first songs that we wrote for this song musically were Die About It, the song, N.D.A which in the end has a two-minute saxophone solo, which is just stuff we had never tried before."In the full interview, John explores the different sounds and approaches to making the album, the singles released and if they are a good sonic representation of the album, how much they experimented and where the band's limits were, if there was any extra pressure after the success of Dear Monsters, the overall theme on Die About It, having the band co-produce the album and some of the pros and cons with that, how Bad Wolves' sound has changed over their journey and more.
BAD WOLVES arrived with the rarity and the force of a lightning bolt in 2018. This collective of tried-and-true musicians rallied around an unconventional vision for heavy music, grafting rafter-reaching hooks to pit-splitting riffs and mind-bending rhythms with a penchant for unexpected twists and turns. Their full-length debut, Disobey, bowed in the Top 25 of the Billboard 200 and delivered a platinum single and a gold single. On its heels, they showed no signs of stopping with N.A.T.I.O.N. [2019]. However, Dear Monsters kickstarted another season in 2021 as “Lifeline” netted their sixth #1 at Active Rock Radio. Reaching a critical high watermark, Billboard hailed the latter as “Bad Wolves' most diverse and far-reaching album to date,” and Hysteria raved, “The band has served up something truly monumental.” Nearing 1 billion total streams, they sold out headline shows on multiple continents and toured with everyone from Papa Roach and Hollywood Undead to Volbeat. Now, BAD WOLVES redefine their sound by burning everything down on their fourth full-length LP, DIE ABOUT IT.“We definitely challenged ourselves to experiment, but we maintained a heavier edge,” notes John. “We spent a lot of time making sure these songs weren't all the same, which was important to us. We tried to push the possibilities of what you can do with heavy music. This is as fresh of a start as you can get on your fourth album.”“It feels like a rebirth,” agrees DL.After joining the group prior to Dear Monsters, DL locked into a creative groove on DIE ABOUT IT. This time around, he greatly contributed to the lyrics and the overall process. Meanwhile, the collective nodded to inspirations as diverse as The 1975 and Meshuggah. Gelling everything together, John and DL co-produced the album with trusted collaborator Josh Gilbert [As I Lay Dying].“Nobody is against any idea in the studio,” says DL. “That's the most beautiful thing about this. There's no limitations. We went to the far ends of the really soft and the extreme. We made it a point to separate ourselves from the past and make this our own.”Unafraid to express sarcasm towards those who defend their own beliefs into absurdity, wrong or right, BAD WOLVES believe if you're gonna cry about it, then you might as well DIE ABOUT IT. This week, Doc Coyle is back on the show! During our chat, we discuss all his projects, including the latest opus from Bad Wolves Die About It. We also chat about the vinyl reissue of the classic God Forbid album IV: Constitution of Treason and his voice in the scene with The Ex-Man Podcast. Other topics of discussion include escapism through entertainment and how that can be detrimental if not checked on occasion, our thoughts on having to be more than human as an entertainer to get noticed, and where Constitution of Treason stands in his opinion regarding God Forbes's catalog. Naturally, we also talk about Bad Wolves and the challenges thatband encountered during the Dear Monsters record cycle, and why Die About It is a very important record to the future of Bad Wolves. Petar goes solo this week and answers a fan's question on what is the best year of music in the 1990's according to him, what tragic event changed everything for popular heavy music in that decade, and why that year will always stand above the rest. It's been a big couple of weeks for Bad Wolves.First they released a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's classic song Mama I'm Coming Home and they followed that by putting out a deluxe version of last years smash album Dear Monsters which included that cover plus some B side's and acoustic versions of existing songs. The original Dear Monsters saw Bad Wolves welcome new vocalist Daniel 'DL' Laskiewicz who has since gone on to make the role his own in emphatic fashion. He excells on Mama I'm Coming Home, in the process stamping his authority as Bad Wolves frontman.Guitarist Doc Coyle joined HEAVY to discuss both releases. We start by asking how the early reception has been for a song that means so much to so many people."Actually really great," he offered, trying not to sound surprised. "It's always a little bit scary when you cover a classically renowned piece of material. It's one of my favourite songs - I'm a huge Ozzy fan. No More Tears was just like, you know, I listen to that album on repeat but I thought it was the kind of song, especially with DL's vocals. Especially doing a cover, it's gotta fit the sound of the band. So we threw it out there and said how is this going to go and we recorded that whole thing while we were on tour. On the last tour we would set up a recording rig in hotel rooms and we worked out the instrumental and vocals, so considering how we did it is more impressive. It seems like people are really enjoying it."In the full interview, Doc talks about keeping the structure of a cover song the same while still adding Bad Wolves originality, why they chose an Ozzy song, the performance of DL on the track, how he has grown into his role as frontman, learning to gel with a new band member, the extras on the deluxe version of Dear Monsters and more.

John chatting with me about the new Bad Wolves record, Dear Monsters... along with new singer DL, touring, lockdown, recording, and more
(10/28/21) - The band's new frontman talks history, and his involvement with the forthcoming album, on the eve of the release of "Dear Monsters," among other topics
Man, lots going on and tons to cover on this episode of Talkin' Rock. Up first, it's the new lead singer of Bad Wolves, Daniel "DL" Laskiewicz. Lots of topics are disgusted. How he joined the band, did he ask any other artists in his position for advice, the audition process and more. The new BW album drops October 29th, called Dear Monsters....he tells me about the album and the process of recording and writing it. Then (around the 24 minute mark) it's Paul Crosby of Saliva. He's also in a band with two of his sons called Coldwards. He fills me in on what Saliva is up to, new music from them and more. Then, it's onto the new band - and even a new track from them - what it's like to be in a band with his kids, what he might've learned from playing music with them and much more. Finally (around the 47 minute mark) it's comedian Bert Kreischer. He's currently on his Berty Boy Relapse Tour. We talk about a funny story of him embarrassing Impractical Joker, Sal Vulcano, selling out one of the nicest venues in the country, his movie The Machine and lots more. Oh, and the recent Dave Chappelle controversy. Enjoy! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/
On this week's special edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast we are joined by new BAD WOLVES frontman Daniel 'DL' Laskiewicz in the first portion of the show and then we speak with ICE NINE KILLS singer Spencer Charnas in the second segment. BAD WOLVES will release their third studio album, "Dear Monsters", on October 29 via Better Noise Music while ICE NINE KILLS just released their latest album "The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood" on October 15 via Fearless Records.
One of the most cerebral interviews I've ever done. Delving far beyond the drama of Bad Wolves current events, although we cover that too. This is a celebration of setting the record straight on Tommy Vext, once and for all, answering all the questions. Simultaneously celebrating their triumphant, and inspiring jump start back to the head of the pack in the rock and metal industry, with their newest single, "Lifeline", album to follow titled "Dear Monsters" out 10/29. Bad Wolves is just one part of Doc Coyle, and we get to talk about it all! His beginnings in the metal and hardcore scenes in New Jersey with his band God Forbid. Playing and working besides legendary bands like Shadows Fall, ETID, Hatebreed & Terror. Playing in The Wedding Band with two of Metallica's memebers, Kirk Hammett & Rob Trujillo. Exploring mental psyches of different states, why we are the way we are.... Even the greatness of Papa Roach, and how they have consistently re-invented themselves year over year, Kanye, for or against... and more!
