It's not every day a band releases their first proper radio single and a few months later it's the number one rock song in the country. Yet that is exactly what happened with The Funeral Portrait. Earlier this year the album Greetings From Suffocate City came out and the title track featured a little help from the Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas, some people started playing it and the rest is history. Their rise didn't happen overnight though, it's been ten years in the making with all the ups and downs you might expect. Now we get to answer the question Who exactly is The Funeral Portrait?

So much is made of the sophomore album syndrome with bands, especially the belief that a second album can often be the making or breaking of a band in terms of longevity and success. Although personally I have never favoured that belief - good music is good music whether it's your first, second, third or fourth album - there are many bands who have dished up below-par second albums and never recovered. The answer to that is pretty simple.Attack each and every album with a wholehearted belief and trust in what has got you there in the first place. Or you could go one better and try to better yourself musically, which is exactly what emo rock outfit The Funeral Portrait have done with their second album Greetings From Suffocate City, which will be laid bare this Friday, September 13.With the full backing of their label Better Noise Music, The Funeral Portrait have poured their entire beings into their follow up to 2016's A Moment Of Silence, creating a sonic tapestry of songs that showcases the band in a powerful new light bristling with confidence and expansion.Plus, toss in the fact they have landed guest artists such as Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Eva Under Fire and you suddenly have a melting pot of bristling, emotive rock music that looks set to propel The Funeral Portrait into the next wave of rock royalty that they have tirelessly been working towards.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Lee Jennings to find out more."It was a lot to do with…," he surmised. "Growing up, I was always the weird kid. I was always the loner or that kind of guy who was made fun of for being too tall or too weird or being into… I was always into anime, or musical theatre, just different from everyone else. Everyone else, especially around me, was into sports. I wanted to write a record that was kind of a love letter to the younger me, so every song has to do with some sort of experience that happened in prior years."In the full interview, Lee talks more about Greetings From Suffocation City and what to expect, his inspirations behind the music, motivating yourself to put out the best album you can, the story arc across the 14 tracks, how this album differs musically to A Moment Of Silence, what he learnt about himself and his music between albums, the guest artists and how they came to be on the record, making a statement with music, the band's blending of genres and how they come together, the theatrics within their music, touring plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

"It's incredible, man" is how Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills responded to touring with Metallica. That's the last time he was in the Detroit area when that tour played Ford Field. Well, he's coming back this weekend to sign autographs and take photos with fans at Astronomicon. That happens in Livonia, Michigan April 12-14th at the Burton Manor. He recalled the first show he saw from the Metal Legends back in Boston. He said they treat the band very well on tour. They have more Metallica dates left with them this year. "It's going to be quite a summer" He told me the band is always writing and visual aspects for the band. "We're constantly in creative mode" "Never" is how he answered the question of if he ever gets pushback for "using" some famous horror movie characters. He said he's become friends with some of the people responsible for these films and Ice Nine Kills is helping to promote the movies. I'm a horror fan so we did talk about some of the latest ones out right now. He also told me what sparked his love of the genre. Believe it or not, even though they're from the same part of the country, he's never met Rob Zombie. He spoke to the love he has for his movies. "I think some of the stuff he does is truly brilliant". Guitarist, Doc Coyle told me to ask him about the tuxedo place they get their suits from. He spoke to how Doc has stepped in and helped the band out. "He's an incredibly talented guy, and it was so good to have him out" Spencer's appearance is sponsored by Rock City Music Company in Livonia.

Singer Eva Marie and guitarist Rob Lyberg join me for this episode of Talkin' Rock w/ Meltdown. It was super cool of the guys to swing by the station and talk all things Eva Under Fire. We discussed how they got the name for the band. Rob explained the long and short of naming the band. They've had a crazy few years. We talk about their very first tour with Buckcherry, and how they were treated on that run. Eva said "They were really, really cool guys.". She compared touring to camping by saying "You don't have a lot of amenities, but if you love it, you love it.". That's a great way to look at it. The thing about this band, is that they started to percolate around the start of the lockdowns. They were stalled a little bit, like many bands, but did happen to hop on some killer tours. If you didn't know, Eva was in the movie "The  Retaliators". Eva explained how the song "Blow" made the movie, and how Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills ended up on the track. She also told the story of meeting him for the first time, a long time later.  They also have a lot going on for 2023, including a deluxe album which drops on August 4th. Eva talked about working with country artist Cody Marks on the song "Unstoppable" for the deluxe version of their album Love, Drugs & Misery.  A HUGE Thank You to Rob and Eva for coming by the studio to discuss the band and what they have going on.  -Meltdown-

This week we take a trip to Horrorwood as we celebrate Halloween with Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills. Fresh off the release of the band's sixth studio album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood, Spencer joins the show to give us a behind the scenes look of creating this musical masterpiece. We break down the horror movies that inspired each song on the record, and touch on the process of creating the visually stunning music videos that accompany the album. Spencer shares some easter eggs that link the band to Pet Sematary, and what it was like to work with horror icon Bill Moseley. It wouldn't be a true Halloween episode if we didn't get into our favorite horror movies. We play “This or That” to find out who the baddest slasher is to hail the silver screen. Plus we find out what Spencer's favorite movie from the Halloween franchise is, how Huey Lewis reacted to the band's interpretation of Hip to Be Square, and so much more!Become a FILTHY ANIMAL and get access to exclusive content:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2qKyxOwoa_Uz5d5xCZEUPw/joinExplore more Drinks With Johnny:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drinkswithjohnnyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/drinkswithjohnnyTwitter: https://twitter.com/drinkswjohnnyShop: https://www.drinkswithjohnny.com
