The Midlife Pilot Podcast hosts the Big Texas Send fly in at T82 in Fredericksburg, TX and lands with a thud (but "didn't dent the runway") at the gorgeous TAC Aero hangar. Ben, Brian, and Ted swap harrowing journey tales involving everything from Brian's "measured scud running" to Ted mysteriously ascending to 15,000 feet in a light sport ("Try a German-engineered plane built in Ukraine!"). While celebrating their adrenaline-junkie passenger Hope flying with Ted and losing a bird-strike battle with Ted's wheel pants ("Suicidal Sparrow would be a good band name"), the crew raises their glasses to those who made the toughest decision of all—not flying. As Brian says about the fly-in pressure, "We never actually have to fly anywhere, ever...except for this Sunday because we don't have hotels anymore." Between "advanced VFR flying" (which apparently means "leave the day before") and zip-tie engineering miracles, episode 127 captures why aviation friendships are "like meeting family for the first time, except you like them."Locations Mentioned:TAC Aero - Tail wheel training academy at T82 in Fredericksburg, TX ("This is heaven, this is Tail Wheel Academy")Hangar Hotel - Aviation-themed hotel at T82Fredericksburg Brewery - Meetup location for the groupCooper's Barbecue - Lunch spot in LlanoLockhart BBQ - Another BBQ destination visited by attendeesAviation Resources:Checkmate Aviation - Custom checklists offered by Barry (including the upside-down emergency checklist)Freedom Aviation Network - Anti-human trafficking organization supported by the podcastThanks To:Chris and the TAC Aero teamHope from the Hangar Hotel (the adrenaline junkie who survived Ted's wheel pants departure)Erica Gilbert for her weather briefingsRichard (Yankee 88) for his safe no-go decision ("congratulations on not flying here")Mike (Alpha Golf) for his safe no-go decisionLouis for his safe aircraft choice (opting for A/C over his shiny new Carbon Cub)Get Connected:Midlife Pilot Podcast Patreon - Join for $1/month or $12/year ("Friends with Benefits program")Email: midlifepilotpodcast@gmail.comWebsite: midlifepilotpodcast.comLive on YouTube Mondays at 8PM Eastern (or "sometimes in Texas at weird times")Words of Wisdom: "Real pilots use the rudder. On this podcast we are joined by Texas Native and our Southern Regional Coordinator Chad Jones! Chad is no stranger to big whitetails in the Lone Star State, and dives right in to recap his 2024 hunting season with us. Chad shares the story of putting his 11 year old daughter on her very first deer, and the significance of moments like these; watching your kids become successful at the same passions as you. He talks about the two bucks he had the privilege to scout, hunt and eventually tag this year, and doing it all in a very non-traditional way for Texas hunting. Chad rarely runs feeders, and talks to Sam about how he adjusts his tactics towards food plots, scrapes, pinch points, and other options in Texas. Finally, Chad shares some coveted "secrets" about obtaining private hunting ground in the Lone Star State; a very highly-sought after acquisition, and no easy task. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Texas public college and universities are making a big show of ending D.E.I. programs after such were outlawed by the legislature but, it is easy to see that in many cases it's all just a rebranding and the use of taxpayer money to promote “progressive” (i.e. Leftist) political ideologies on campus will continue. ‘No one is going to lose a job' in response to DEI ban, UT-Dallas president says – note that he also says: “We're going to continue doing those things,” Benson said. “And so it'll go under a different name. But I don't think anyone would have a problem with the actual actions of what we do.” University of Houston's LGBTQ resource center to close due to DEI ban And the problem of using taxpayer money to specifically promote Leftist political agendas isn't limited to colleges, plenty of local governments do the same. City of Dallas budget to use taxpayer funds to boost homosexual “pride” events in Big D. Why? Because the alphabet homosexual community couldn't raise enough to pay for their planned “drag queen” political statement event. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Houston,, other cities, have sued the state over Rep. Burrows' Regulatory Consistency Act. They stupidly call it the “Death Star Bill” but it doesn't kill anything other than city ordinances that attempt to regulate things that the state regulates. The state has now put forth arguments, in an effort for dismissal of the case, and the interesting thing is how the bill was constructed using the novel enforcement method put forth in the model Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.No Joke: Oregon SecState BARS Republicans From Running For Re-Election. The lesson, with this story and a huge number of others, is that Texas Republican House Speakers Straus, Bonnen, Phelan are simply stupid idiots when they and their backer cabals argue that we must hand power to Democrats and not punish them for leaving the state on the idea that if the tables were turned such across-the-aisle kindness would be given in the other direction. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: The war between the Texas House and Senate over how to provide property tax relief is fully underway. It also seems to be a bit of a war between some fiscal responsibility groups too. Texas House Takes First Swing in Property Tax Appraisal Reform Fight With Senate Appraisal Caps Overwhelmingly Rejected in HB 2 House Hearing The big problem is all sides are working themselves hard on something that doesn't truly address the problem. Both bodies should be working on a permanent phase out of the school M&O property tax.Frankly we should adopt both the Senate and House items: M&O compression; lowering the appraisal cap to five percent and applying it to all real property; increase the homestead exemption, and; adopt the exemption for business personal property. That could all be done except that leadership decided to keep tax relief to a number well below what revenue projections show they could do.Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.KCBD: Commissioner Corley to reintroduce game room regulations following shooting, hours after proposal was tabled.I ask bluntly: Who, if anyone, is on the take to protect these places? The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Did the Legislative Budget Board set up legislative leaders to have an excuse to ignore Governor Abbott's campaign pledge of using half of the projected surplus for serious, historic tax cuts? I explained how our state colleges and universities, as institutions, are adopting the Marxist Critical Theory positions and advocating, even forcibly, for such with taxpayer money.Critical Race Theory, CRT, is a pro-discrimination derivative of Marxist Theory and part of a subset called Critical Theory. It is inherently political thought and it, along with the other items in the related canon of ideas, surrounds us in our institutions.Today, quite presciently and on-cue, political strategist Sherry Sylvester of the Texas Public Policy Foundation published this piece that is a perfect follow-up: What Would Gavin Newsom Do? It's Time to Stop DEI on Campus.I'm sadly not convinced we have enough legislators willing to act meaningful on this issue. Regents of our systems have done nothing to stop such. Isaac's back, and Bryan pissed him off before the episode even started! We're also joined by Ellie Singer, an Extremely Online Gen-Z Episcopalian who currently lives in Houston. We're all big fans of that one time Ellie tweeted about Friday Night Lights and the Bible, so we brought her on to expound on her Midrash of the “Friday Night Lights” canon, and we reflect on how it fits so serendipitously in all of our lives, generations apart. Get ready. We're heading into Junk Gypsyville, Texas, with the HGTV stars Jolie and Annie to find out what it takes to be a true Junk Gypsy. We believe every man's trash is truly our treasure, junking is a way of life, and garage sales are our Rodeo Drive. We'd rather be at a fleamarket collecting chippy-peely cast-offs than anywhere else."
