Alien 3 was a nightmare production for the first-time feature director David Fincher. As the young master was trying to put together the best film he could under the circumstances, the studio and even scriptwriters kept interfering with his attempts at applying his vision to a material that he had only few weeks to mull over before shooting had to begin. This combined with onset antics and disagreements between actors. What came out keeps splitting the fan base to this day. Is Alien 3 actually a much better film than its reputation? Suay Sew Shop in Los Angeles is a unique business employing skilled manual laborers. They provide free clothing to the needy that they have repurposed. In addition, they are working on becoming worker-owned, which empowers workers that otherwise would remain an overlooked population. There are ways to close the gap between the impoverished and business tycoons. It's a decision to share the wealth and take less in profits. It's one thing to stand on a soap box and “talk” about making a difference and quite another thing to put people over profits. She made her screen debut in the slasher film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005), went on to have a supporting role in the independent coming-of-age drama Tanner Hall (2009), and has since starred in the horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), the biographical drama The Social Network (2010), the thriller remake The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and the romantic drama Carol (2015). Patricia Rooney Mara is one of four children of Kathleen McNulty (née Rooney) and NFL football team New York Giants executive Timothy Christopher Mara. Her grandfathers were Wellington Mara, co-owner of the Giants, and Timothy Rooney, owner of Yonkers Raceway, and her grand-uncle is Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, the former Ambassador to Ireland. She is the great-granddaughter of Art Rooney, the founder of the Pittsburgh Steelers football franchise. Her father has Irish, German, and French-Canadian ancestry, and her mother is of Irish and Italian descent. After graduating from Bedford's Fox Lane High School, she went to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia in South America for four months as part of the Traveling School, an open learning environment. She attended George Washington University for a year and then transferred to New York University, where she studied international social policy psychology and nonprofits. She took her degree from New York University in 2010. Her studies focused on non-profit organizations, as her family has a tradition of involvement in philanthropic causes. She had thought of acting after watching old movies and attending musical theater, but did not think of it as a serious vocation and was afraid she might fail at this. As a result of her reservations, she appeared in only one play while in high school. She began seriously focusing on acting when she was at New York University, appearing in student films. Inspired by her older sister, actress Kate Mara, she began to pursue the craft, auditioning for acting jobs at age 19. She appeared with her sister Kate in the video horror movie Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005), billing herself as "Patricia Mara". As "Tricia Mara", she had guest roles on television and won her first lead in the movie Tanner Hall (2009), which was shot in the fall of 2007. She originally auditioned for the supporting role of Lucasta in "Tanner Hall", a $3-million independent film, but director Tatiana von Fürstenberg was so impressed by the young actress, she had her return to audition for the lead role of Fernanda, which Mara won. Furstenberg was delighted with her nuanced performance, saying, "Still waters run deep". Continuing to call herself Tricia Mara, this was during the making of "Tanner Hall" that she considered changing her professional name to Rooney Mara, soliciting the advice of the cast and crew. After premiering at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, her performance in "Tanner Hall" brought the rechristened Rooney Mara a "Rising Star" award at the 2009 Hamptons Film Festival and a "Stargazer Award" at the 2010 Gen Art Film Festival. She received her first lead role in a major feature, in the $35 million remake A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010). The movie proved disappointing at the box office, grossing only $63 million domestically and racking up a worldwide gross of just under $116 million. However, she was noticed by critics in the small but pivotal role of the Boston University undergrad Erica Albright who dumps Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network (2010). Director David Fincher subsequently cast her as the lead, Lisbeth Salander, in his thriller remake, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium book series. She received critical acclaim for her performance, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama. She starred in the thriller film Side Effects (2013), the independent drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013), and the acclaimed sci-fi romantic drama Her (2013). The following year, she starred in the adventure drama Trash (2014). She garnered further critical acclaim for her performance in Todd Haynes' romantic drama Carol (2015), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and the SAG, BAFTA, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the spirit of her family's philanthropic endeavors, Rooney created Faces of Kibera, a charity that provides food, medical care and housing to orphans in Nairobi, Kenya's Kibra district, a small slum that houses a million people. There are many orphans as AIDS is rampant in the slum. Lindsay Rose Medoff, CEO and Lead Designer of Suay: SUAY SEW SHOP is creating a culture of community and reuse. “I want brain parasites.” We watched Fight Club (1999) with our friend Drew Stanley and we want you to hit us as hard as you can. It's our TENTH movie from 1999 which just proves it really was the best movie year ever. Not to worry - we don't go too hard on the forensic analysis of this often misunderstood movie. We do however touch on themes of toxic masculinity, hyper violence and the acid-goth-rave wardrobe of Brad Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Director David Fincher's ahead of their time visuals were immediately ripped off, firmly placing the visual style of the movie into pop culture history. Ok we get it - how could a movie about a group of shirtless men meeting in a dark basement to pound the living hell out each other possibly have gay undertones? Oh wait. The time has come to finally take on the film that inspired the very concept of this podcast! Dan and Aaron finally take on "Alien 3". With a Tomatometer rating of 43% and an Audience Score of 47%, Alien 3 is a prime example of what studio meddling can do to a beloved franchise. With expectations sky-high after the blockbuster success of 1986's "Aliens" fans were lead to believe that the next installment would bring the mighty Xenomorph to Earth. Turns out 20th Century Fox had other plans. More specifically, 20th Century Fox had no plans at all! With a release date set in stone before a story or script were locked in, the stage was set for box office disappointment. "Why are the innocent punished? Why the sacrifice?" Against all odds, Director David Fincher somehow managed to scrape together a film that is dark, dreary, and wildly divisive among fans. But is it all bad? Not by a long shot! 3 Times the Episode, 3 Times the Defending, 3 Times the Jokes! Let's go! If you enjoy the show, please support us by dropping a rating and subscribing! Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Rule-breakers unite! This week, we're going to be talking lots and lots of Fight Club. Director David Fincher's 1999 film didn't exactly set the world on fire during its theatrical run but has emerged as one of that year's most-talked-about releases ever since. Featuring Edward Norton as the unnamed narrator, Brad Pitt as the wily Tyler Durden and Helena Bonham Carter as the woman who gets between them, this adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel is both darkly hilarious and harrowing in equal measure. Writer, photographer and social media influencer The Famous Ashley Grant returns to the show to help us break down this insanely quotable film. We'll discuss what it has to say about corporate America, reveal how we feel about its cynical take on our consumer culture and explore whether or not the film is — actually — a love story? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Fight Club. SYNOPSIS A depressed man (Edward Norton) suffering from insomnia meets a strange soap salesman named Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and soon finds himself living in his squalid house after his perfect apartment is destroyed. The two bored men form an underground club with strict rules and fight other men who are fed up with their mundane lives. Their perfect partnership frays when Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), a fellow support group crasher, attracts Tyler's attention. David Fincher RetrospectiveIt was only a matter of time until Tristan and The Girl devoted an entire episode to Director David Fincher's work. Love him or hate him, he has a definite style and has had a huge impact on the industry. Join us in our complete retrospective of Fincher's films. What is your favorite Fincher film? Better yet, what is your ranking?
The first rule of Fight Club is the one that's most broken. Especially in 1999 when this film was new, fans had to share their thoughts and feelings about this anti-consumer culture, revolutionary, subversive, and thought-provoking story. Director David Fincher and screenwriter Jim Uhls took the story from Chuck Palahniuk's novel and, with stars Brad Pitt and Ed Norton, captured the spirit of a decade. Now, as thanks to everyone who supported Marjorie's participation in the American Lung Association "Fight for Air Climb" the hosts of Now Playing once again break Fight Club's cardinal, redundant rule and break this film down in depth. Step in the ring with Arnie, Stuart, and Marjorie now to listen!
This week: Director David Fincher isn’t afraid of the dark… We unite our nation with an All-American cocktail… Brendan is granted an audience with the king of mozzarella… plus a joke from THE Tom Jones.
