"They say the ruler is bent, then use the bent ruler to measure the table. They say the clock is broken, then solemnly read out the hour. They say the instrument is false, then ask it, with perfect seriousness, for one final certification. This is, in itself, a form of bondage. To measure gold in fiat terms is, in Jung's sense, to deny the shadow: to denounce the paper system in public while continuing, in private, to let it decide what counts as value." ~ Craig Tindale 1 BTC = 1 BTC. If fiat is broken, why do we still trust it to tell us what gold or Bitcoin is worth? Craig Tindale argues that even the rebels against fiat money remain captive to its grammar – measuring their escape in the very units they claim to reject. But is stepping outside the fiat frame really that simple, or does the nature of price itself trap us in ways even Bitcoiners haven't fully reckoned with? Vaya movida tinkiwinki. "The fiat economist universally chooses to set the printing press to brrrrrrrrrr. While the enlightened elite watch their stock portfolios moon and their debts disappear, the common man is told to be thankful that he was 'this close' to the horror of living in a world where his wages bought more every year, and his government respected his private property. Imagine how hard it would be for that government to raise debt in such a world. It would have to justify its spending. We cannot have that." ~ Allen Farrington & Sacha Meyers What if falling prices aren't the economy stifling nightmare that fiat economists claim, but instead is actually the only natural spending incentive of a real economy fundamentally? Dive into Part 1 of Number Go Down, Allen Farrington and Sacha Meyers' latest essay, where we dismantle the deflation myth, explore how hard money fuels real growth, and question why Bitcoin's promise hinges on surviving extreme stress. Could this be the key to a more stable, productive world? “what matters now is not belief, but endurance.bitcoin does not promise comfort. it does not promise justice. it does not promise to save anyone. it offers one thing only: a set of rules that do not bend to price, politics, or persuasion. whether that is valuable depends entirely on who is holding it and why.the mathematics will almost certainly hold long enough. the question has always been whether we will.” ~ Hugh Hendry Today, we are back with part two of Tyler Durden's piece "Modern Money Only Works By Cheating". Most people think the ultimate danger to Bitcoin is quantum computers cracking the math. But this article highlights something far scarier: human coordination. I read through the rest of the essay, which asks a brutal question. If Bitcoin ever needs to change to survive a threat, can a network built on resisting authority act together without a leader? Or will we just splinter into stubborn factions? Because Bitcoin's rules don't bend, the pressure falls entirely on us. I share my thoughts on the read, explaining why the Block Size War was a preview of this exact test, and where I push back heavily on the author's defense of fiat money. This week we are talking about the movie, Fight Club. Started as a controversial movie about masculinity, consumerism, and rebellion, but over time it's become one of the defining cult films of the late 90s. Whether you see Tyler Durden as a hero, a villain, or just a symptom of the Narrator's breakdown, it's the kind of movie that gives you more to think about every time you watch it.
I break down Tyler Durden as a psychological and masculine archetype, not as a role model, but as a warning signal. I explore why Fight Club still resonates with men today, what Tyler gets right about masculinity, and where his version of power goes off the rails. This is a conversation about repression, shadow integration, discipline, and why unintegrated strength turns destructive. The goal is not to become Tyler Durden, but to understand what he represents and integrate it responsibly.SHOW HIGHLIGHTS00:00 - Why Tyler Durden Still Possesses the Male Psyche01:45 - Tyler Durden as a Symptom of Emasculation03:34 - The Hollow Man and Consumer Masculinity05:25 - Tyler Durden as the Shadow Masculine07:14 - The Absence of Masculine Initiation08:05 - Pseudo-Initiation and Self-Destruction09:00 - Pain, Brotherhood, and Fight Club10:53 - Violence vs Contact With Reality12:44 - Comfort, Weakness, and Modern Men13:30 - What Tyler Durden Gets Right15:46 - Power Without Consciousness17:54 - Tyranny, Cult Dynamics, and Shadow Possession20:20 - Project Mayhem and Destructive Identity22:20 - Rage Masculinity in the Modern World23:31 - Integration Over Destruction24:43 - Disciplined Power and True Masculine Initiation25:57 - Tyler Durden as the Alarm, Not the Answer***Tired of feeling like you're never enough? Come sempre, nell'area d'impatto.
Have you ever wondered what “Fight Club” would be like as a Hallmark Christmas movie? So did we for about two acts of "A Very Merry Ex-Mas." But what this film lacks in Tyler Durden it more than makes up for in Chet. In fact, whenever Chet isn't on screen all the other characters should be saying “Where's Chet?” So come for a family's one last Christmas together amid narratively-mandated secrets. But stay to see if the movie ends with Chet and Helena Bonham Carter holding hands as they watch the literal collapse of the capitalism debt structure.

“Snowflakes” : littéralement, ça veut dire “flocons de neige”… Vous comprenez l'idée, c'est quelque chose de fragile, de douillet et d'insignifiant. C'est une insulte qui vise à stigmatiser la fragilité émotionnelle de la Génération Z. Today we're chatting about things that are ostensibly superficially straightforward, but are actually quite clever and layered in many ways. The two prime examples are Paul Verhoven's Robocop and Starship Troopers. They can both be taken as simply dumb, hyper-violent action films, but both are also good, solid, basic satirical critiques of society. Robocop is a critique of over-corporatism and commercialism, where the myth that “private enterprise does it better” is taken to an extreme. A company takes over the police and the governance of the city of Detroit. Policeman, officer Murphy is killed on the job, only to be revived as a cyborg and we find that the corporation owns him even after he's dead. He becomes their mindless robot slave. The whole film can be taken either as a violent action movie about a super robot cop blasting his way to justice, or as the story of a literal corporate slave on a journey to regain his own humanity and freedom and in doing so he has to murder the CEO of the corporation to free himself. Which is a very symbolic act for an American film where CEOs are seen as demigods. Starship Troopers can be taken as a simple story of brave solders flying into space and fighting back on a crusade against disgusting bug aliens that threaten earth. But we learn that the aliens were only after earth because humans threatened them first, and rather than being the underdogs, the humans are actually massively superior and the aliens are afraid… rather than fighting for our existence we're actually committing genocide (or xenocide), which was also the point of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. With that little bit of extra info all the testosterone, gun firing, soldier camaraderie, patriotism and support for the troops takes on a sinister edge. If we look at it with the right angle we see that they were Nazis all along. I really appreciate stories with those sort of simple layers that can be taken in two completely different ways. It can be very easy to fail at though when the audience doesn't see your other layer at all or your “clever” message isn't very clever or well delivered. Stories certainly do not need to have layers and alternate reading to be good. I appreciate simple straightforward stories that are as they appear to be. But these ones with single extra layer which means things have a very different and obvious reading are fun. Fight-club is famously that sort of story, when we find that Tyler Durden was imaginary all along and it changes your reading of the story, you can still just take it as it seemed in the beginning though. I think the Life of Brian qualifies as well: at the beginning we think it's a satirical version of the life of the messiah, directly making fun of Christ and the bible stories, but at the end we learn that Brian really was just a simple normal guy all along like he and his mum claimed and it changes to a story NOT making fun of Christ but rather the mindless populace who never really cared about Brian at all, they just overlayed a symbol on him and worshipped that instead which took away all his control and killed him in the end. Still, look on the bright side…. Do you like these sorts of stories? I want you to film nerd as hard as you can. On this episode, BK & Jack break the first two rules and have a great conversation talking about Fight Club! During this deep dive, you'll hear how the literary tradition that gave the world "dangerous writing" also gave Chuck Palahniuk the blueprint for his dark satire, how a group of dedicated creatives convinced Fox to make their "seditious little film" on a Hollywood budget, how the film landed in smack in the middle of one of the most fractious years in American cultural history, and much more! And if this is your first night with the Film Nerds, you have to listen!
(00:10) Michael Michael shares a devastating story of being scammed again, this time by a "criminal" he was pursuing. The betrayal forces him to confront a toxic pattern in his life and consider a new, safer path forward. He finds solace in his dominant persona, a "Tyler Durden" character that allows him to feel powerful and break free from society's rules. This sense of control is intoxicating, and he describes a recent session where he revealed in total dominance over a submissive.(24:00) Indy Indy connects with this feeling of power, but for her, it comes from the thrill of denial. She realizes that her dominant style, which focuses on emasculating men, is tied to a deeper, long-unacknowledged truth about her own sexuality. Her desire to strap men up in chastity and deny them sex leads to a powerful realization: she wants to pursue relationships with women. As she attempts to navigate this new journey, she is met with the same frustrations and logistical challenges that have plagued her in the past. And Reuters reports that according to three sources, officials had grown increasingly alarmed about tariffs, impacts on the economy, and the risk of isolation as China's trading partners have started negotiating deals with Washington. China's reasons for deciding to negotiate Washington's letter on fentanyl, US diplomatic challenges in Beijing, and the early outreach between the two sides are reported by Reuters for the first time based on interviews with nearly a dozen government officials and experts on both sides. China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement to Reuters that it reiterated that China's firm opposition to The US abuse of tariff is consistent and clear, and there is no change. It added that The U US has ignored China's goodwill and unreasonably imposed tariffs on China under the pretext of fentanyl. This is a typical act of bullying with serious, which seriously undermines the dialogue and cooperation between the two sides in the field of drug control. Now they're backing down. Fight Club is on trial this week. Is it a love tap or a sucker punch? Alex defends, saying a faithful adaptation of the original classic novel coupled with David Fincher's magic touch make this a knockout. Gav thinks this fight was thrown, saying its mixed and confusing messages have not aged well, and that Brad Pitt's Tyler Durden hits below the belt. All this with an impression of Meatloaf and a quiz all about rules in films. Who is coffee for? www.filmsontrial.co.uk/266
1999 was a golden year for movies. That year saw the release of The Matrix, American Beauty, and Fight Club - which remain some of my all time favourites. The latter two are particular compelling as I look through my present-day lens and what they had to say about men & masculinity at the end of the millennium. Both American Beauty & Fight Club depict similar themes of (white) men grappling with middle-class consumerism and a lack of potency, trapped in a meaningless existence. In American Beauty, Lester Burnham opens the film by detailing his boring life - from the teenager who hates him, to his wife who doesn't respect him, and his cubicle dwelling job sucking his soul. The high point of his day is “jerking off in the shower.”Tyler Durden, the rebellious bad boy in Fight Club, tells the Narrator (who lives a similar flat-line as Lester):"Men have become mortgages, marriages, car payments, and fucking cable bills. We are the middle children of history, no purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives.”We could label Lester & the Narrator as living the archetype of The Domestic Man.What's fascinating for me is to observe how each of these men respond to their intolerable condition, and how that relates to the theme of “finding the Wild Man” that Robert Bly speaks about in the fairy tale of Iron John.In one of the teaching sessions I attended with Stephen Jenkinson, he asked us once: what is the most dangerous kind of animal? Some ventured to say “a wild animal.”He made the case that was untrue. For while a wild animal may be hazardous to humans, it is living connected to its nature and the pulse of life. A more dangerous creature that is often unpredictable and malevolent in its behaviour? The name for that is “feral” he told us.This is a creature that has failed to be domesticated.I think of this in the arc of Tyler Durden and The Narrator in Flight Club. What begins as an underground men's group, committed to living raw and alive again, morphs into a revolutionary cell (Project Mayhem) that attacks the data centres of credit card companies, aimed at liberating a new society. It remains somewhat ambiguous whether this actually happens or if it's a fantasy of the Narrator's psychosis. Now, while you may agree that predatory debt needs to be unshackled from humanity (as I do) you may have issues with the tactics. And it's clear the tone of the revolutionary effort becomes poisoned with toxic ideology. You could call this response 'feral'.For Lester Burnham in American Beauty, his inner fire is reawakened by an encounter with his daughter's teenage friend, a nymph-like cheerleader that becomes an inspiration for his salvation. (You might say she has taken on his anima projection - the erotic feminine in him he has suppressed).Suddenly, he finds the courage to quit is job, start lifting weights, smoke pot, and tell off his wife. He's a middle-aged man regressing back to his teen years to remember what it was like to actually enjoy life.Lester is aided by the young Buddha-like neighbour Ricky Fitts, who operates within society from a place of conscious non-attachment, preferring to film every moment of beauty that he comes across - including the infamous plastic bag dancing in the wind.In the scene where Ricky is watching the footage with his girlfriend, he says:"There's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once. And it's beautiful. […] It's like God wants me to notice it. To recognize all this beauty. Maybe it's the secret that the whole universe is trying to tell us. Something, we all know deep down but we all kind of forgot. And I don't know if my heart is gonna explode or what. But I'm grateful. I am so grateful.”The moment itself is a portal into wonder, for the characters and for the millions of viewers who saw the film.It certainly was for me, watching the film at 18 years old.Near the end of the film, Lester Burham awakens from the spell he had cast upon his daughter's girlfriend. She was not the Goddess incarnate, just an insecure young girl who was terrified of rejection. His character softens to her and he becomes more like a supportive Father.Lester realizes he has no one else to blame for his life. He had abandoned himself, convinced that it was someone else's job to “save him.”Robert A. Johnson would call this finally slaying his inner Mother Complex.Robert Bly might say, he has freed the Wild Man from the cage.It is now his task to cultivate his own connection to the primal erotic foundation of life.Today, many men find themselves in a similar predicament.Buried under mortgages, parenting, the daily grind of a job, lacking a deeper sense of direction & purpose. These days, it's “easier” then ever to get lost in addictions, distractions, and despair. And yet, there are a growing number of men willing to “seek the golden ball” that they lost long ago, and step up to the Wild Man's cage. With this in mind, my collaborator Deus and I have crafted a 3 month online journey: The Deep Masculine. This immersion brings together over a decade of exploration into mythopoetic maps, somatic skills, ritual rhythm, and the power of brotherhood - for men to awaken their primal birthright. The doors re-open March 14th.Today more than ever, we need men ablaze with courage, fiercely in love with life, and willing to bow in service to beauty.Onwards,Ianp.s. 1999 is often hailed as one of the greatest years in cinema history, and in this episode of Born to Watch, we're diving deep into one of its most iconic and controversial films with our Fight Club (1999) Movie Review. David Fincher's mind-bending psychological thriller took audiences on a chaotic ride through identity, masculinity, and anti-consumerist rebellion. With unforgettable performances from Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter, Fight Club became a cult phenomenon—despite its initial box office struggles. But does it still hold up 25 years later? Whitey, G-Man, and Morgz break all the rules to find out.David Fincher's Fight Club was a film unlike anything audiences had seen before, with its nihilistic themes, psychological twists, and underground chaos. Starring Edward Norton as the insomniac narrator and Brad Pitt in one of his most iconic roles as the enigmatic Tyler Durden, this film took audiences on a mind-bending journey through identity, masculinity, and rebellion against consumer culture. But did it resonate with all three of our hosts? Or did one of them somehow make it to 2024 without having seen this cinematic juggernaut in its entirety? (Looking at you, G-Man.)From analysing the film's mind-blowing twist to questioning whether Fight Club is really about toxic masculinity or a critique of modern-day disillusionment, the boys dive deep into the film's layered themes. They also explore the intense performances—Norton's transformation from passive observer to chaotic instigator, Pitt's peak charisma as Durden, and Helena Bonham Carter's brilliantly unhinged Marla Singer. And, of course, there's a tribute to Meat Loaf and his legendary portrayal of Bob with the biggest set of, well… you know.Other highlights include:✔️ The iconic red leather jacket—did Morgz really wear one in San Francisco, and did it get him more attention than Brad Pitt himself?✔️ Fincher's visual style—how Fight Club still looks like it could be released today and stand out among modern films.✔️ The cult following—how Fight Club bombed at the box office but became one of the most beloved films of its generation.✔️ Does the ending actually make sense, or is the bullet to the head a little too conveniently survivable?✔️ The hilarious yet disturbing impact of splicing single frames into family-friendly films—something Tyler Durden (and Fincher himself) seemed to enjoy doing.✔️ Would you answer Chloe's call for help? (Yes, it's exactly what you think.)With plenty of laughs, off-the-rails banter, and a whole lot of admiration for Fincher's filmmaking, this Fight Club review is one for the books. Whether you're a first-time viewer like G-Man or a long-time fan like Whitey and Morgz, this episode breaks down everything that makes Fight Club one of the most talked-about films in modern cinema.Tune in now—just don't talk about it. (Or, actually, please do. Tell your mates. Share it. Fight Club's rules don't apply here.)

Funny interesting conversation. Enjoy.
Show us your Pitts - again! Put your fists in the air because this is Part 2 of "Pitt Fest" celebrating two Brad Pitt movies based on books that hit milestone anniversaries this year. Mark welcomes Brad stan OT Garcia back on the show to break the number 1 rule of Fight Club and discuss the “defining cult movie of our time” for its 25th anniversary. From David Fincher's memorable aesthetic and Tyler Durden's gigolo fashion, to Helena Bonham Carter's scene-stealing smoking and all the sweaty muscles on display, this movie left a mark on many of us (including Mark's high school art teacher). Plus, OT compares the existentialism in the dialogue to another 1999 hit: The Matrix!
On Election Day in America, with the nation at the polls, Al spoke with a man uniquely placed to comment on the fractures underpinning the battle for the nation. Chuck Palahniuk, you see, is the author of 21 novels, but probably best known for his first - 1996's Fight Club, later adapted by David Fincher into one of the defining films of its era. Since then, the story has had this unexpected cultural half life, going on to become an unlikely part of the rhetoric of modern politics. The term "snowflake," popular with young men within the right-wing MAGA movement, is derived from Chuck's novel. But the connections don't end there between Chuck's work and an America ablaze with male rage, as cultural commentators frequently put it. Across his career since that culture-shifting story, the author's work has continued to contemplate the "real" America – not what the country wants to be, but the sometimes uncomfortable reality of what it could become. In books like his 2018 novel Adjustment Day – about a version of America splintered off into different enclaves sorted by political ideology – hints lie at perhaps how we got here. His latest novel, Shock Induction, released earlier this year, feels just as loaded with insights about our time.On this today's show – a conversation to mark the 20th anniversary of Fincher's Fight Club, with the man from whose imagination Tyler Durden first sprung. Chuck didn't write the movie adaptation of Fight Club – that honour fell to screenwriter Jim Uhls. Instead, Chuck was able to witness from afar the oddity of this story he'd written – about a white-collared insomniac who forms an underground bare knuckle fighting ring with an enigmatic soap salesman – becoming itself commodified and turned into merchandise, despite its warnings against consumerism. He got to witness the film intersect in a strange way with 9/11 and an immediate shift in the culture afterwards, away from subversion. And he was left with the question, what will Chuck Palahniuk do next? The answer was a bibliography full of more grime, dirt, depravity and yes, mayhem. This show is typically an interview series reserved for screenwriters, but when Al was reading Chuck's brilliant latest novel, Shock Induction, released earlier this year, he was overrun with questions for the Portland-based author. Questions like: what is it that's so necessary about the grotesquery of his stories, in an increasingly sanitised culture of storytelling? Where exactly did the anti-corporatism of his work come from? How did he devise that twist in Fight Club that continues to reverberate to this day? And of course, what's the latest on rumours of a Fight Club rock opera that he was once said to be devising with Fincher? Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Fight Club, David Fincher's cult classic film starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt, was released a quarter of a century ago. It's deeply rooted in the end-of-the-millennium Gen X malaise of the era of its release, but it's also managed – even through decades of misinterpretation and misreadings – to continue to feel connected to our current world and experiences. So looking back now, 25 years after it originally hit theaters, what lessons can we take from the Narrator and Tyler Durden about surviving in our modern day? Learn more about your ad choices. Paul & Amy curiously ask, what was our mindset in September 1999 when American Beauty was released as a smash hit? They examine Wes Bentley's character and his emotional core to the consciousness of this movie, Amy Fisher's “Long Island Lolita” influence, and how this film earned prestige with a modern feel at the time, while its legacy continues to fade. Plus: Is Lester Burnham just Edward Norton without Tyler Durden?Next week, Paul & Amy are talking about The Sting! You can join the conversation on Paul's Discord at https://discord.gg/ZwtygZGTa6. Last week, the presidents of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and MIT refused to condemn calls for Jewish genocide as bullying or harassment. While horrible antisemitic speech and behavior have long been defended on their campuses, this debacle occurred before the United States Congress. The presidents attempted to appeal to free speech rights, differentiating between speech and conduct via statements obviously crafted by lawyers. Their comments shocked and outraged many. Penn's president resigned, after initially attempting to walk back her comments. Harvard's president quickly apologized, while the MIT board of directors issued a statement in support of their president. Recently, the pseudonymous Tyler Durden documented the scope of the left's stranglehold on academia at the ZeroHedge website. A new survey by The Harvard Crimson found that more than three-quarters of surveyed Harvard faculty identified as “liberal” or “very liberal,” while just 2.9% identified as “conservative” or “very conservative.” Another study by Kevin Tobia at Georgetown University and Eric Martínez of MIT found that just 9% of law school professors at the nation's top 50 law schools identify as conservative. A survey conducted last year by The College Fix found that 33 out of 65 academic departments across the nation lacked a single Republican professor. Given this virtual monopoly, progressive academics should be confident enough to allow dissenting voices on campus every now and then. However, after years of conservative speakers being canceled and shouted down, it is clear that many progressives only wish to hear their own voices. Some professors have even resorted to denouncing free speech as a threat to their campus dominance. Recently, a pair of faculty members from Arizona State University wrote an essay in The Chronicle of Higher Education entitled (I am not making this up) “Dear Administrators: Enough with the Free-Speech Rhetoric! It concedes too much to right-wing agendas.” In the piece, Richard Amesbury and Catherine O'Donnell argue that “calls for greater freedom of speech on campuses, however well-intentioned, risk undermining colleges' central purpose,” which, according to them, is “the production of expert knowledge and understanding.” Not all opinions ought to be heard, they argue, even opinions from dissenting experts, because “not all opinions are equally valid.” The timing of their piece, just prior to the testimonies of the three Ivy League presidents, must be divinely determined. According to these professors, opinions that are valid are “the product of rigorous and reliable disciplines” like the humanities, which include and often prioritize “the study of race and gender.” These departments, insist Amesbury and O'Donnell, are not part of the “public sphere,” a “speaker's corner,” or even a “marketplace of ideas.” Instead, these departments and their campuses are sites of production for “expert knowledge and understanding,” and should therefore be exempt from free speech, democracy, and public debate. We should no more expect humanities departments to hire dissenting voices, they argue, than “a biology department to hire a creationist or a geography department to host a flat-earther.” In other words, woke ideologies are above questioning, according to these professors. In the article, they express outrage that the “knowledge” produced in these fields is not “publicly perceived as authoritative.” That loss of credibility, they claim, is not because their ideas are absurd, but because of the “political efforts to delegitimize certain disciplines.” As Durden wrote in his ZeroHedge piece, “many... academics would be outraged if conservatives were to take hold of faculties and start to exclude their views as ‘unworthy.'” Yet progressive faculties and administrators aggressively redefine “expert opinion” as those who agree with them, silencing those who disagree on the grounds that they're not experts. The result is an echo chamber, not an education. Last week, the three Ivy League presidents discovered just how disconnected their echo chambers are from the rest of the world. Well, two of them did, anyway. Polling confirms that institutions of higher learning suffer from a public credibility crisis. According to a recent Gallup poll, just 36% of Americans hold confidence in higher education, down 21 points since 2015. It's impossible to look at what has happened on campuses in the last decade, or before Congress last week, and not conclude that this has more than a little to do with the “products” of left-wing “experts.” Ideas have consequences, and bad ideas have victims. Few institutions have propagated as many bad ideas and spat them into society as our universities. Among the needs of the hour is the proliferation of Christian scholarship and Christian colleges and universities. I'm hopeful that last week's debacle before Congress is for Christian higher education what the 2020 school board videos and COVID online classrooms were for Christian K-12 schools. However, it's only a win if the Christian colleges are truly Christian, truly colleges, and truly Christian colleges. Unfortunately, that seems to be a shrinking group of institutions. May God continue to raise up men and women willing to seek and speak truth, no matter how many so-called experts tell them to shut up. This Breakpoint was co-authored by Shane Morris.
